A/N: Hello All! Thanks so much for reading, please let me know what you think! I'm about a chapter ahead in writing, and I would like to post around once a week. But, that might not always happen. Here's chapter two!
Augustus led Harry through a locked door, muttering an alohomora as soon as he got close to it.
“Hey Zach, wanna be a pal and show Harry here around while I finish setting up his room?”
Harry stared at Smith, unsure of what was going on. Zacharias looked right back at him, saying nothing for a minute.
“Yeah sure, follow me,” Zacharias clapped his hand to Augustus’ as they passed, in a sort of half handshake.
“What happened to your robes? Aren’t you a healer?” Harry asked, following his tour guide out of the main room.
“No.”
“They let you come and go as you please?”
“No.”
“Then what were you doing out in the lobby?”
“They have the best tea and snacks out there,” Zacharias grinned before leading Harry further down the hallway, coming to a stop in front of a large open room. “This is the activity area. There’s a few bookcases, some tables for board games… A muggle CD player, but all of the CD’s skip. This is where we do all of our recreation, basically.”
Harry looked around the dreary room full of other patients in various states of awareness. Some were reading others looked as if they were unconscious with their eyes open.
“Is this a mental ward?” Harry turned back to look at Smith.
“No Potter, this is a hospital. Everyone here, just like you, needs help.”
“It’s just… I don’t know if I really fit in here, I thought it would be different…” he trailed off, watching an older woman talking to herself and gesturing wildly.
“Well, give it time; I’m sure you’ll start to feel at home soon.”
They turned down another hallway, where a few patients were walking or standing. One gave Zacharias a pat on the shoulder as they passed, grinning at him. Zacharias pointed out where the bathrooms were, and the shower. He also showed Harry an interesting device that looked like a muggle payphone, but worked through the floo system.
“This is the telly room, it has a muggle telly set up in there, we get to watch films some times, otherwise there’s a couple of channels from the muggle programming you can watch…”
Zacharias continued talking about what was in the hallway around them, but Harry was no longer listening. There in the telly room was Draco Malfoy, sitting at a table and reading a newspaper. Draco’s fingers came up to brush his medium length fringe back from his eyes. There was something different about him, something Harry couldn’t put his finger on. His back was hunched forward slightly as he leaned over the table.
“Malfoy… what’s he doing in here?” Harry turned and rushed to catch up with Zacharias as he had continued walking.
“I don’t know for sure, he mostly keeps to himself. Maybe you should ask him if you want to know,” Zacharias smirked.
“Well why are you here, then?”
Zacharias’ face immediately changed as he stopped walking. He stared off down the hall, as if he didn’t hear Harry’s question. Instead of answering he said, “Let’s go see if your room is ready.”
Zacharias led Harry over to Augustus, who took Harry to his room. Harry looked around, but Zacharias was gone.
“Hey Cicero… You have a new roommate! His name is Harry,” Augustus spoke gently to a man laying wrapped up in a blanket on a bed on the far side of the room. The man didn’t respond or move. “Okay, well… Lunch is in a few minutes, see you guys then.”
Harry sat on the empty bed that was a few feet from Cicero’s. “Hi, I’m Harry Potter… what is the food like?” Answered by a few mumbles, “What’s that?” He received no other reply. Feeling the anxiety and loneliness start to choke him again, he stands up and stiffly walked out of the room.
Seeing Healer Munslow walking down the hallway with in-training healers following him, Harry approaches him.
“Healer Munslow… I’m… I’m feeling much better now. I was feeling bad earlier, but I feel much better now, so I was just wondering if I could go home,” Harry almost pleaded, looking down at his feet.
The healer looked at him, then down at his notepad. “Mr. Potter… It is with great recommendation from your friend Miss Granger that you stay here and heal. I don’t think it’s wise to let you out, as you could danger yourself or others with your suicidal thoughts. You will stay here for a minimum of 5 days, no more than 30. We can talk about your progress on Friday.”
“Hermione… Can I see her?”
“Of course, Mr. Potter. Miss Granger is here to bring you some clothes and toiletries,” with that, the healer turned and continued walking.
“Harry!” Hermione came running down the hallway towards him, carrying a bag that looked like it had clothes and other things inside.
“Hermione… I don’t want to stay here. The people… The patients here are not like me, I’m not supposed to be in a mental hospital like this. There isn’t anything wrong with me!”
“Harry, you need this. I know that you’re under a lot of stress and that you can’t handle it on your own anymore.”
“So let me leave and you and I can sit down and-“
“I can’t help you, not with everything that’s wrong, and you know that. You need a professional… an outsider’s point of view.”
Harry listened to Hermione, not fully believing what she was saying but knowing he wasn’t going to be getting out of the hospital for at least 5 days. After spending some time with her best friend, Hermione said she had to leave, so she handed over Harry’s bag and after hugging him, she left.
Harry walked back to his room, deposited his bag and sat on his new bed. Looking around at his small shared bedroom, he began to feel the depression he’d been fighting start to sink in. It’s as if he’s being woken up after being unconscious. All these emotions he hadn’t felt in a long time starting to bubble up to the forefront of his being. Feeling a violent scream start to twist its way out of his throat, he stood up and went in search of the cafeteria instead.
