Disclaimer: I own nothing of the Harry Potter fandom, neither the books nor films, not characters. I make no money from the writing of this fiction. |
Okay, so I have decided to work this in two fashions. First- it will parallel the Harry Potter books, though won’t necessarily be one book per year, and second- each one of the original Horcruxes and Deathly Hallows will make an appearance. Most pairings will be canon, but with a twist or two, except in the case of a character who was previously unknamed or unknown, in which case an original character(OC) will be inserted(Not Mary-sue!)
Chapter Two: First Year
Eventually, Tom was eleven years old and he received his letter from Hogwarts. He was so excited that he talked his parents into taking Eileen with them to shop and, in the geis of an early birthday present, purchasing her books for the year.
The family, along with Miss Prince, arrived at Diagon Alley by carriage, a fancy contrivance that was pulled by invisible beasts called Thestrals, and began their shopping. Tom was frustrated by the rule for no brooms, but this was short lived when Canus purchased an owl, large and pure black, with wide yellow eyes, for him.
“This will make it easier for you two to correspond with home while you are there.” He told them, balancing the cage in one hand and a two-year-old Alludra in the other, while Wezen, at four, bounced in excitement, wanting to pet his brother’s new bird.
“Easy, Wezen. You’ll spook him. What shall we name him, huh?” Tom asked as he took the cage and held it so the little boy could see. Eileen stood by and smiled.
“I want to call him Almerk, after my favorite chocit fwog card.” Wezen said smiling as he pressed his face close and gawked at the owl.
“Almerk? Oh, you mean Almerick Sawbridge.” Tom said. “Hey, how about we go get some treats? Chocolate frogs sound great, just about now.”
“Alright, you three go on to the treat shop. Here are some knuts. But, when we have finished at the bookstore, we’ll need to get your wands. Meet us at Ollivanders.” Canus said taking the cage and waving the children away.
“Canus. Call Libby. She can take those things home while we finish up here.” Adhara suggested looking at the collected robes, vials and cauldrons in their pile.
“Good idea, Love. Libby! Libby, come along.” Canus called and a wrinkled old house elf popped in. “Libby take these things home and pop back in a bit for the children’s books. We’ll be eating at the Leaky Cauldron tonight, so no need to prepare dinner.” He instructed as Adhara took the little girl from him and headed for Flourish and Blotts.
Tom bought an assortment of chocolate frogs, mini whizzies and crème filled pastries. He sorted them into three bags and passed them to his brother and Eileen. “We better hurry. Mom and Dad said we’ll be getting our wands next. I’ve been wanting one for ever-so-long.” He said walking ahead while pulling Wezen by the hand. All that his brother wanted was to open a frog and watch it jump.
They finally reached Ollivander’s just as Canus and Adhara arrived. The couple had stopped at Fortescue’s to get a cone of mint chip for Alludra. She was currently dripping the pale green cream all over Canus’ black cloak.
The family opened the door and entered the shop after Canus cast a sticky-not spell on the cone, keeping its drips from messing up the wandmaker’s stock.
Ollivander stepped out from behind a stack of boxes and smiled at them.
“Ah, Canus. How is that wand of yours? 15”, oak with a unicorn’s tail center, wasn’t it?” the old man asked.
“Indeed, but you knew that, Ollivander. We’ve come to pick up some wands for two new Hogwarts pupils.” said as proudly as if they were both his children.
“Ah, young Tom. Finally off to school, eh? Good, good. And Miss Prince. Very exciting. Well, ladies first, is my motto.” Ollivander said looking up and down a stack of cases on a low shelf. “Hmm, here, try this one.” He said pulling out a long brown wand and handing it to Eileen. She waved it once and nothing happened, so she handed it back.
Ollivander looked disappointed, but continued on finding three more potentials. Finally, he drew out a long thing wand of pure black with an elaborately lathed handle.
“16”, black walnut with a troll beard center.” Ollivander said handing it out for the girl. Eileen took it and a soft blue glow surrounded her hand. She smiled brightly at the wandmaker and Ollivander grinned back. “That wand will do amazing things. Not many troll beard wands ever made. Gregorovitch had none.”
Tom’s wand was slightly easier, only two failures before a wand, 13 ½”, made of yew with a phoenix feather core, was found. Tom was thrilled as the wand warmed in his hand.
Ollivander looked like he had witnessed a miracle. “A phoenix feather and a troll beard, in the same hour. A highly unusual day, I’d say. I think this will be quite a year for Hogwarts. Why, I had a boy in here, just yesterday, big boy, named Reubeus Hagrid. Got an oak wand, 16”, rather bendy, with a giants whisker core.” The man said as if the significance were obvious.
“Well, how much will that be old man? We still have some things to pick up before dinner.” Canus said, breaking the man’s revelry.
“Oh, four galleons for the phoenix feather and three for the young ladies.” The wandmaker said and Eileen blanched.
“A bargain, I’m sure. Here you go, Ollivander. Come along children. We will just let Mr. Ollivander back to his work.” Canus said before bustling them out to the, street. “Now, Miss Prince. You just think of that as an early Christmas present. You and Tom have been such good friends, that I’m happy to see you have it. You heard the man, amazing things.”
Adhara laughed and Wezen chose that minute to open a chocolate frog and watch it jump right onto his mother’s back.
Soon, they were all laughing as they headed for a luggage shop, to purchase trunks for the two students to carry their goods to school in.
After dinner, Mr. and Mrs. Prince picked up their daughter and her goods at the home of the Hershels, and were surprised at how much of their money she had left. They thanked the Hershels and allowed Eileen to keep the change for necessities on the train and when she got to school. Tom slept well that night, dreaming of the magic castle and all the fun he would have at school.
September 1st was a day of bustling and excitement as the family headed for Kings cross station and the train that would take their son to his first year in school. This was the first time that Tom had been away from them since they had brought him home from the orphanage and Adhara was nearly in tears.
Wezen helped his brother push the trolley through the barrier as Alludra sat on top of the trunk, holding on to Almerck’s cage. Platform 9 ¾ was a bustle of activities as families said good-bye or double checked to be sure that they hadn’t forgotten anything.
There were bird cages and smaller containers filled with rats or toads, settled on many a trunk, waiting to be loaded on the big steam engine train. Cats were allowed, but most families felt they were too hard to handle for first years, so they had yet to overwhelm the rest. Tom caught sight of Darius and some other boys and he waved to his friend. They called him over and he sauntered through the intervening crowd.
“This is Tom,” Darius said, pulling him closer. “That’s Gotham Nott, he’s a second year, Abraxas Malfoy, third year, Orion Black, fourth year, and Charlus Potter, he’s our year, but his brother is a prefect, fifth year. We’ve known each other forever.”
“Pleased to meet you,” Tom said, extending his hand to each of them. For the most part, not one had a good firm handshake, almost as if they were afraid to commit too much to it, yet.
“Come join us. We have a compartment already saved. Jonathan’s holding it for us.” Gotham said waving to his family before heading toward the train. Tom looked back to his parents, waving from their place near the Princes. Eileen was nowhere to be seen, so Tom waved back, before joining his new friends on the closest car.
“Do you mean Jonathan Romley? I know him.” Tom called out as they alighted the car.
“Really? Jon hasn’t mentioned you, to us.” Malfoy gloated from the lead of the boys.
The train lurched forward soon after, and the adventure began.
