Within the Lies
Chapter One: Never Normal
~*~*~*~
This was unlike any place Harry had ever seen before. Sure, he wasn’t seeing all that much at the moment thanks to Hermione’s death-grip on him, but what he was observing was…
Breathtaking.
The walls were alight with power and runes and things Harry didn’t even think a human was capable of seeing. They glowed, the walls literally GLOWED, with power; it was absolutely amazing.
Harry just had to know where he was, because he wanted to visit again when he got the chance. The magic permeating the room was warm and comforting, like what he imagined a mother’s embrace would feel like, and he wouldn’t mind coming back when he felt alone and out of sorts.
Something that happened way too often for his liking, really. And though he knew he wouldn’t be able to escape reality and hide away in this lovely room, it would be nice if he could return to it every now and then.
“What do you mean, Harry? This is Grimmauld Place. Even the same room you’ve always been in… are you sure you’re alright? Maybe you do need some more rest.” Hermione sighed in worry as she forced Harry to lay back down.
“But Hermione, if he sleeps anymore,”
“He’ll miss catching up on his summer reading!” The twins mocked, though Hermione didn’t seem to catch it.
“You two need to get your priorities straight. Harry’s health comes first.”
Ah, so that was how one got the smart little witch to see reason; it was okay when she said it, because in her mind that was how her priorities in life were listed, but she could decipher the lack of logic when someone else spoke the same thing and it endangered another.
That was some useful insight that Harry would contemplate another time. For now… he had to wonder why the place he had been before looked so wonderfully different now.
And another enigma to add to everything else was how he had he ended up here in the first place. Sure, leaving the Dursleys behind as soon as he possibly could had been his intention but, well, he didn’t REMEMBER any of it.
Actually, he didn’t remember much about the night before at all. Had it even been the night before? Was it still his birthday, or had he missed it? How long had he been out?
“Glad you’re okay, Harry!”
“Yeah, they really did a number on your house.”
Harry smiled slightly. It was always a pleasure to have Fred and George around. Just to see them and hear them talk, with that unique connection of theirs, was better than any Calming Draught. Well, it was to Harry anyway. He loved how they were always able to know what the other was thinking and how they finished each other’s sentences. They were always on the same page and it was rather entertaining to watch.
‘Well, for me a least. I know there are several people their connection annoys to no end.' Harry knew that Ron was one of those people.
Though the younger brother didn’t show it often, the way the twins were so close and so perfectly in tune with one another really irked the younger Weasley. Why? Harry hadn’t a clue, but even though his red-headed friend tried to hide it, Harry had a lot of practice at recognizing resentment and spite in a person’s eyes.
Sadly, Harry had seen that same expression aimed at him a time or two from his so called friend. He had to wonder what made Ron like that sometimes, but that was one mystery he didn’t have the time, nor desire to put forth the effort, to solve.
“Gave us some good ideas,”
“For some wicked pranks though.”
The twins stood in the middle of the room and both smiled happily but Harry could tell there was more to it. Despite outward appearances, Harry just KNEW they were up to something. They had a scheme going on that no one would know about until it was too late.
‘Whatever those pranks are, they are bound to be wicked.’ And Harry couldn’t wait to see them in action!
Harry felt slightly jealous for a moment before he shook it off. Those two were born pranksters. Even though Harry had descended from a Marauder, it didn’t make him automatically a perfect prankster. Not only that, but he couldn’t compete with the twins. They knew what the other was going to do long before anyone else did. They had been granted a special bond that most were never allowed the privilege to have. Harry shouldn’t be jealous, it was stupid. No, he should just be happy for the two and watch from the side lines.
Besides, he got into enough trouble by himself without even TRYING. He’d hate to see what would happen if he actually started to prank people… or professors… though he couldn’t help but think that it would be terribly fun to prank the Headmaster…
“Harry, we know what you’re thinking,”
“You’re our triplet after all.”
Harry blushed as he focused on the two. How did they know?
“Honestly, I’m appalled that the two of you are thinking about pranks at a time like this. And even going so far as to pick on Harry! Hasn’t he been through enough? Let him rest so that we can help him celebrate his birthday properly and put this all behind him.” Hermione interjected and Harry turned to look at her, startled.
What did she mean? What did he need to put behind him?
“What did I miss?” Harry asked, completely confused but now his mind was sharp and alert, ready for anything.
He didn’t care what the news was, he had to know. It was one of those pet peeves of his, really, this whole “not knowing” thing. He hated it when people kept things from him that he ought to know.
‘Like the fact that my parents hadn’t died in a car crash'. Yeah, he was still pissed about that. Harry planned to play a little prank on the Dursleys one day, just for a little revenge.
Though those horrid Muggles deserved worse…
‘Much worse.’ Harry thought icily as he recalled all the injustices he’d had to suffer over the years.
Only a little while longer he would be free of them for good and be able to exact a little pay back. Just a little. Even though they had caused him quite a good deal of pain and suffering, he didn’t intend to bring upon them any lasting harm.
Perhaps maybe an extra extremity or two, like Dudley’s pig’s tail, but nothing that couldn’t be fixed with a little surgery. Yes, that would be the best part of it all. The Dursleys having to explain themselves without people thinking that they were “freaks.” And then they’d have to suffer the pain of having the extra body parts removed. No pain would be brought upon them from Harry’s direct actions, and that’s all that any court would look at should they try and side against him on the matter.
“Harry, brother…” Fred started, his eyes full of concern.
“Are you okay?” George asked, his eyes mirroring his twins’.
“Are you remembering something,”
“From last night?” They both looked rather apprehensive, and worried, which Harry couldn’t help but wonder about.
He shook his head and smiled. He couldn’t help it. Out of all the people that he could have woken up to, he was rather glad it was these three. The twins were the only Weasleys to call him “brother” and he loved them for it. He was glad the twins were here and not Ron.
And Hermione… yeah, she was a know-it-all, but she was a mother hen that always looked after him. Heck, he was the reason why she ended up in half the deadly situations she did, trying to protect Harry was a dangerous job. She didn’t have to, but she was just that loyal a friend. The rest of the time? She was the sister he’d never had, and a good sister always got into trouble trying to help their sibling.
‘Her life would be so much easier without me… but a whole lot less entertaining.' Harry thought with a knowing smirk. Without him around, she would never get her nose out of the books and live a little.
Living… Oh, right! His living arrangements. He needed to figure those out, as well as decipher what the twins were going on about. What had happened last night? Why were they worried about him? And why was he at Grimmauld Place? He was sure he hadn’t left the Dursleys last night… though there was a nagging feeling in the back of his mind. Like he was supposed to know something but just couldn’t seem to grasp the thought.
“Fred, George… er… What happened last night?” Harry questioned. He knew he could trust them to give him answers.
Ron on the other hand… well, that was another reason he was glad the twins were here instead of the git. Getting information out of Ron was like pulling teeth sometimes. Ron wouldn’t give a person a decent answer even if he could. Which, nine times out of ten, he couldn’t… so using the younger red-head for information gathering was just a waste of time.
“Honestly, we can talk about this later. Harry, you need to rest.” Hermione huffed, totally in mother hen mode.
“We've got a better idea!” Fred grinned as George came over and wrapped an arm around Hermione’s shoulders.
“How about you go tell your boyfriend,”
“That our brother, Harry, is awake.” Fred added as he draped an arm across her shoulders from the other side and helped his brother gently shove Hermione out the door.
“Ronald is NOT my boyfriend!” Hermione huffed indignantly, before turning to glare at the two as they shut the door on her. “Fine!” Her voice drifted through the door. “Just promise me you’ll let him rest if he needs it.” Her voice was pleading, and she probably knew it, but Harry could tell that she honestly cared about his well being from the tone.
He didn’t know how he knew, and it was a rather strange sensation to just KNOW something like that, but he did.
It was another thing that he would have to check into later. So he filed the “Knowing” along with the “Glowing” and would come back to both subjects later when he had the time.
“We’ll always keep,”
“Harry’s well-being in mind.” The twins vowed before casting several locking spells, as well as a few silencing and privacy charms.
Harry smiled, knowing that the twins weren’t trying to keep Hermione out. She was the brightest witch of her age, after all, and could easily disarm every one of those spells in a heartbeat.
Ron, however, couldn’t even begin to fathom how to go about it. He’d probably trigger a trap in the process before he even truly started.
Not that Hermione would intrude. She had made sure, in a peaceful way, that the twins would look after him. So Harry was certain that if Ron wanted in, she would not lift a finger to help the prat.
“So…” Harry was getting off subject again, in his mind at least, and wanted to get things back to the more important matters at hand. “What happened?” Yeah, that just about covered everything he wanted to know.
Harry wasn’t entirely sure he really wanted to know, honestly, especially with how Hermione had tried to distract him from the subject. It was probably something bad and she wanted to protect him, like always, but there were some things that shouldn't be kept hidden.
After all, he didn’t want to find out from The Daily Prophet. That paper was just a bunch of rubbish, and he needed to know the truth to be able to counter anything which might have been written about him.
‘I could always hope that they wouldn’t write about me, at all, but I know that is just wishful thinking and I’d rather be prepared for the worst.’ It was sad, but true.
“Well, to be honest,”
“No one’s completely sure!” George shrugged with a smile while Fred appeared to be deep in thought.
That was so typical of them. Fred always was the thinker of the duo, while George tried to be the comic relief and decoy of sorts who gages a person's reaction. And they were surprised he could tell them apart. It was simple really, and Harry was surprised no one else seemed to have caught on. If one paid enough attention to the two, they could see the differences.
“Come on.” Harry sighed and propped his back up against the headboard.
He needed to stay on subject and get some information, yet his mind kept wanting to go in all sorts of directions. It was frustrating how hard he was finding it to focus on one set goal. It was almost like he’d become ADHD over night or something, because it was like his mind was every and nowhere at the same time. It was baffling!
“If anyone can tell me what’s going on around here, it’s you two.” Harry had complete confidence in their abilities, and wasn’t afraid to voice it. The position he was sitting in, however, he was afraid might leave a mark.
Honestly, couldn’t they make beds more comfortable?
‘Stop that.’ He chastised himself when he realized his mind had veered off course once again.
“Honestly, the Ministry can’t determine if it was Death Eaters or Dementors.” That was another thing that usually marked who was who; Fred would most often start a conversation, or sentence, and George would follow.
“Either way, we’re lucky you’re alive.”
“Wouldn’t do to lose our triplet.” They said in unison and smiled as they walked over to Harry; one on either side of the bed.
“They, the Order that is, let us come along to help.” Fred started once again and sat on the bed next to Harry.
“When we saw…” George began to speak, but appeared to get choked up about something.
Before Harry knew it George was sitting beside him and both twins were holding on to him for dear life, as if letting go meant he would drift away from them or something.
“Merlin, Harry, the entire house was nothing but solid ice!” George cried out and buried his face into Harry’s shirt. He didn’t want the brunette to see the tears, but Harry had to smile.
‘They were truly worried about me.’ Harry thought happily before something occurred to him.
Memories of the fire that had coursed through his body assaulted his conscious and he had to shake his head to clear it. Why had the house become ice, if his body had been on fire?
“We were so afraid,”
“We thought you were lost to us.” Fred finished the sentence this time, seeing as George wouldn’t have been able to voice the thought. George was definitely the more emotional one of the two, but in a good way.
The twins just kept holding him, like he was their most precious treasure. It was a truly wonderful feeling, of being held gently in loving arms, and the comforting warmth that went with it.
Harry understood why they had been keeping a firm hold on him now. He supposed, in their minds, if they let go this would all just be a dream and they really had lost him. They needed that solid reassurance that he was truly there among them and hadn’t gone somewhere that they were unable to follow.
And Harry was more than happy to give them all the reassurance they needed.
“It’s alright…” Harry crooned softly as he rubbed their arms in a comforting gesture which gave them that extra assurance that he was really there with them. “I’m alright.”
“Don’t do that, Harry!”
“Don’t ever do that again!”
“Don’t leave us!” Both brothers cried in unison and Harry’s heart went out to them.
It wasn’t as if he would go somewhere and wouldn’t allow them to follow, not on purpose at any rate, but to them… it was as if that’s exactly what they thought he would do.
“Don’t worry, you two can follow me anywhere.” Harry smiled before a thought occurred to him. “Well, anywhere except death.” He felt the twins tense, and knew he’d hit the nail on the head. Seemed he knew them almost as well as they knew each other sometimes. “If I die, you both have to live on for me.” He pouted, which caused both of the twins to chuckle and succeeded in lightening the mood.
“Don’t worry, Harry. We wont let you die.”
“We’ll protect you, for as long as you allow us to stay by your side.”
For Harry, it felt like the very air around them glowed for a moment at those words, but perhaps it was just his mind playing tricks on him. But there was one thing he knew for certain; something had changed. He didn’t know what, but for some reason he knew that his world would never be the same again.
‘And I have a feeling last night was the start of something big.’
Not that he thought that highly of himself and the changes that had occurred to him; quite the contrary. But there was one piece of undeniable evidence which caused him to believe whatever had happened would have a large impact on his life.
When something happened with Harry Potter, it was never normal.

A/N: See, reviews really are motivational! I certainly didn’t foresee myself updating again before next week. So please, let me know your thoughts! Praise is all well and good, but I PREFER to hear thoughts and impressions, likes and dislikes, and all that good stuff. The story isn’t written in stone, and I think I would highly enjoy some input. I love interaction~! And I will try and respond to every reviewer to the best of my ability ~ I really appreciate you all, and I want to show it! You can view all my responses, as well as interact, take polls, and other fun stuff here: http://www2.adult-fanfiction.org/forum/index.php/topic/24399-review-responsesvotes-for-within-the-lies/page__mode__show
In other news… Okay, an emotional reunion for Harry with his friends after Merlin only knows what happened… Well, Merlin and me of course XD lol I like Hermione, by the way, so for those of you who want me to bash her… I’m sorry. But she will show her merit in this! Much more than Ron… Ron bashing will probably occur often I fear, for the mere fact as I’m still livid that he left Harry because of his jealousy and fear! (On separate occasions, mind you. Yes, very petty reasons but I NEED to focus anger on at least one "good guy" if this is going to work.) Though I sometimes have to wonder how he got sorted into Gryffindor… Whoops, sorry, didn’t mean to vent XD lol
Things are about to heat up here next chapter, just a heads up! I know this chapter explained a few things, but only managed to open a can of worms with a lot more questions in it so… You’ll just have to wait and see XD lol Harry will have five mates it looks like… yeah, that’s going to be a fun sex scene to write. Kinky too XD lol *clears throat* Anyway…
Wanna guess who they are? Or make a vote for someone you like? Also, any suggestions for a love interest for Hermione? Sure, the “Golden Trio” will be no more, but it looks like she’s going to be an important character, so I’m keeping an open mind and would love to see what you think! *^.^* Later~
