Chapter 2 - Dragon Hunt
“There he sits
proud and cold
the Dragon
Slytherin’s king”
I began to walk down the aisle looking for a certain platinum haired, blue-eyed Slytherin, muttering the whole time about ungrateful hawks that should be thrown in the stew pot and left to roast. I had only gone past a few compartments when I saw a boy fitting that description. I stopped, and leaned unobtrusively against the wall, observing him. He was sandwiched between two gigantic gorilla-looking guys. Around them were several other boys, presumably from Slytherin also.
Yep, that’s gotta be Draco all right.
I took note of the arrogance with which he carried himself, and the sneer he wore.
Heh, sure looks like a spoiled rich brat…still, maybe…
I paid close attention to his eyes, knowing they were windows to the soul.
Yes, there it is, only a flicker, but it’s there.
It was brief, but I saw emotion under that mask of arrogance. He must have sensed my gaze, because he looked up, straight into my eyes. Surprise flitted briefly over his features. I grinned, exposing my fangs. He raised an eyebrow, obviously having never seen a girl with fangs. I could feel as well as see his gaze moving down my body, checking me out. When we made eye contact once more, he smirked appreciatively, and motioned for me to join him and his friends.
So the dragon wants to play huh? Hmm…
I smirked in return, and narrowed my eyes in a open challenge. Turning, I walked away with just enough extra swing to my hips.

Hmm…looks like we’ve got a new student. Must be the American I’ve heard so much about. She looks like a Slytherin for sure, and a damn sexy one too…wait, where’s she going?
“Hey Drake, who was that?” Apparently Blaise had noticed her as well.
“I don’t know Blaise, but I intend to find out.”
“Heh, if you don’t, I will. She’s a damn hot piece of ass… kinda creepy though. Looks like the type that likes kink,” I took a swipe at Blaise, cursing him for a pervert in every language I knew. Before long, my thoughts wandered back to the mystery girl. I smirked to myself, and leaned back for a short nap.
Looks like it’s gonna be an interesting year…

Laughing to myself, I returned to the compartment where Harry, Ron, and Hermione had finally convinced Neville I meant no harm. I spent the rest of the trip listening to Harry and Ron talk about quidditch, which sounded an awful lot like soccer on broomsticks. It seemed to be the only wizarding sport in London, much to my disappointment. I told them about hoverball, the sport we played back home.
“Its like basketball, except the players stand on hoverboards.”
“What is Basketball?” chorused Ron and Neville.
I gave them a weird look, and answered their question.
“It’s a popular muggle game.”
“What are hoverboards?” asked Harry, obviously confused.
Now this question, I understood. It hadn’t been very long since the advance in American wizarding technology had made hoverboards possible, therefore replacing the traditional broomsticks.
“It’s a pancake shaped gravitational object that you stand on as it levitates you in the air, much like a broom.”
Hermione seemed to understand me perfectly, but the blank looks on the guys’ faces told me they were lost. Hermione and I exchanged exasperated looks.
Why is it that guys are so slow?
Hermione tried to explain it to them, apparently translating my words into something they could understand. Harry caught on quickly, but Ron and Neville were still lost. I lost interest and zoned out, leaving Harry and Hermione to work on their slow-witted friends.
The next thing I know, Harry gently shakes me awake.
“Come on Shadow, we’re here.”
I looked around bleary-eyed, noticing Harry and I were the only ones left in the compartment.
“Where’d everyone go?”
“They’ve already gone. Come on or you’ll miss the boat.” He led me out of the train, and pointed me in the way of a big, hairy man he called Hagrid, before he hurried off to get a carriage with his friends.
Skylar flew from somewhere, and settled once again on my shoulder, giving full voice to what he thought of me for leaving him behind on the train.
“Jeez, I’m sorry, so lay off already you pesky bird!”
I continued on my way to Hagrid in a bit of a foul mood.
When I finally reached Hagrid, I found I was just barely above his waist. I looked up, slightly awed.
“Hello, you must be Th’ new sixth year. Ye’re a bit big for a firs’ year.”
I couldn’t help it, I had to smile at him.
“Yeh, I am. I ‘d probably scare the daylights outta half of these poor little kids.”
At the moment I spoke, several of the firsties noticed me, and shrank back in fright.
Hagrid took no notice, and shepherded everyone into the waiting boats on the shore of a great lake. I shared a boat with Hagrid, seeing as how none of the firsties were too keen to be in the same boat as me. I stretched out languidly in the prow as all the boats moved forward, apparently self-propelled.
I watched lazily through half-closed lids as the castle loomed ahead atop a cliff.
“HEADS DOWN!”
The boats carried us through hanging ivy concealing an opening in the cliff face. We glided through a dark tunnel, eventually reaching an underground harbor. Hagrid led us up a flight of stone steps to an oaken door. He knocked thrice, and a stern-faced witch opened the door.
Hmm…looks like she’s been sucking on lemons…she’s probably a real stickler too.
“Firs’ years, Professor McGonagall. The new sixth too.”
“Thank you Hagrid, the rest of you follow me.”
We found ourselves in the entrance hall, lit with torches. The firsties huddled together, obviously nervous. I hooked my thumbs in my belt loops and leaned nonchalantly against the wall, only half listening as McGonagall instructed the first years. After giving their instructions, she made her way over to me.

Oh dear, it looks like we’ve gotten ourselves another troublemaker. Just look at those dreadful clothes! I swear, I don’t know what in the name of Merlin possessed Dumbledore to revoke uniforms.
As I approached, I noticed a piercing glare directed my way, as if just daring me to say something.
“You must be the new sixth year.” The girl nodded.
“What is your name?”
“Shadow.”
“Shadow?” she nodded again.
“Shadow what?”
“Just Shadow.”
I sighed frustratedly, causing her to narrow her eyes in response. I noticed her stiffen, as if she thought I was going to press her further. I decided to just leave the subject alone when her hawk hissed threateningly at me.
“Very well then. You will be sorted after the first years. I will come back to lead you to the Great Hall as soon as the first years are seated with their houses.”
She nodded again, and I left to the Great Hall.
