Chapter 2 -Of beasts and Oaths-
The tall lithe man stood there by his tree as his little rabbit dashed off. No, it’d be over far too quickly if he didn’t give her just a smidge of a head start, and really where was the fun in that. A slightly manic smile crept onto his face as he counted slowly to ten in his head, like a boy playing tag.
Once he was finished he set after the pretty little thing he was all to pleased to have stumbled across. He’d been perplexed by the ghostly scent that had caressed his senses as he passed. The siren smell called to him and he was just about to investigate when his less than bright companions pulled him away. More than likely they’d have lost the two mudbloods he’d spent the better half of the day tracking down.
He’d hurried them to the Snatcher camp not too far off and hurried back himself. When he’d returned to the same spot, the smell was all but gone. If it weren’t for the sudden rustling a little ways away he may have turned back. As it was, he was more than curious to find out why this little morsel who’d been crouched near the water was wondering around a dark forest at nightfall. He’d been about to ask just that when shed set off. It didn’t bother him though. Quite the contrary. He lived for the chase.

She had no choice but to run away from the tent. She couldn’t lead him straight to her friends. Why had Ron mentioned the stream but not extended the barrier to include it! No, she couldn’t blame Ron. He was still healing from the splinching. She shouldn’t have let him reinforce the wards that morning. Damn! How could she have been so stupid?! She cast another jinx over her shoulder and heard a deep laughter telling her shed obviously missed again.
“Now, now li’l rabbit!” He called behind her in a teasing voice. “You’ll ‘ave’ta do better than that!” And he fired a binding hex that barely missed her head, wrapping itself around a nearby tree with a crash. With a small yell she changed directions, slipping slightly on the thick layer of damp leaves and branches that littered the forest floor. To her right she spotted a thicket fallen trees and changed direction again to run under the low hanging logs as an idea hit her. She heard the crunching of leaves and branches behind her and as she reached the other side she turned and rose her wand.
“Reducto!” The spell hit the fallen logs overhead and they fell, broken and splintered, down before the wizard just as he’d started through. The man let out a startled shout and that combined with the thunderous noise of tumbling logs made Hermione wince and take a few steps back.
Breathing heavily, her wand still outstretched, she listened, Her ears straining for any sign of her chaser. After a moment that dragged on for what seemed like hours, a small log moved, and his ragged form began to climb over the pile that had just barely missed him. “Well le’s not do that again shall we.” He said mostly to himself, his voice sounding slightly less amused now. He fought his way to the top of the pile, his already grungy clothes covered in the dirt and leaves that were tossed up by the fallen trees.
When he finally managed to right himself he spotted her and went to lift his wand but Hermione had already shouted “Levicorpus!” Followed by a quick “Expelliarmus!” to relieve him of his wand, He was simultaneously disarmed and lifted by one boot clad foot into the air with a startled shout. Hermione caught his wand just as she fell back against a tree breathing heavily, chest aflame as her heart tried to escape her ribcage. Closing her eyes she tilted her head to rest against the rough bark, her mind whirling.
“Oi!” Her eyes shot up to the man dangling upside down above the broken pile of logs. He’d just ceased thrashing about and now pinned her with a steady stair. His coat tailed cloak and dark matted hair hung about below him as he folded his arms across his chest. “Clever girl. You’ll be lettin’ me down now you will.” The man spoke easily, as though he weren’t the one now at her mercy.
Hermione kept her wand pointed as steadily at him as she could manage. “Ill be doing no such thing.” And she was pleased to find her voice strong, if not a bit winded. The Snatcher scowled at this, he didn’t like being the one without control. The scowl quickly turned to a little smile though as he put his hands behind his head, looking as though he was lounging comfortably, and not hanging upside down in mid air by one foot.
“So then luv, Wha’ do ya think yer gonna do with me then?” The question caught Hermione off guard and she lowered her wand a fraction. She wasn’t quite sure what she should do with the dangerous Snatcher shed just managed to snatch. She’d just wanted to stop him chasing her.
“I…I haven’t decided yet.” she answered truthfully.
“I can think of a few things I’d ‘ave fun with if the tables were turned.” He said in a teasing tone as gave her a suggestive wink. Hermione gaped at him a moment before going slightly red and turning away to think up an answer to his first question and decidedly ignoring his comment and all it implied.
He was a threat. She thought as she chanced a look back into the slate grey eyes that seemed to be laughing at her indecision. What she should to is get rid of him. But how? Obliviate him, her mind suggested, but with out Ron or Harry standing behind her telling her to do so, she found she just couldn’t bring herself to do it. It was too much of a reminder of the pain of having to Obliviate her parents. Her mind went back to the coffee shop with the two Deatheaters and Rons suggestion to just kill him rang in her ears. She couldn’t do that either. She wouldn’t take any lives in this stupid war if she could help it.
“I’m going to leave you here.” She said finally making up her mind and decidedly pocketing his wand. “Your friends will find you soon enough and I’ll be long gone.” And with that she pushed herself away from the tree and began to walk around the man to go back the way she’d come.
She only hoped she could find her way back.
As she walked past him he yelled out. “Oi girly!” And his voice was a bit off, almost panicky. “If ya leave me like this, and without me wand…I’ll be dead fer sure if they find me.” at that she stopped dead in her tracks, her back to him.
“Why would they-”
“It’sa dog eat dog world luv, and there are some mean uns, like Greyback, Im sure you’ve ‘eard o’im. Who wouldn’ hesitate to do me in to gain a bit o’ power. He would love to find me strung up like a side’a beef. Figures he ought to ’ave been in charge any ways.” The man spoke as though he were talking more of the weather than of plots against his life and it sent a chill down the girls spine.
Hermione turned around to see him peering up at her over his shoulder, a seriously sinister look in his charcoal painted eyes. “If I give you your wand you’ll attack me, and if I let you down you’ll chase me.” She accused in a rather childish tone.
“Probably right on both counts luv.” He said in a surprisingly truthful way that made Hermione mouth flounder for a moment before he continued. “but what if I gave ya me word?” He smirked as she walked around him, his head turning to follow her.
“And what do you think your word means to me? You sell people for money! You have no honor! Ill just be another paycheck from the Ministry!” Her voice rose a bit with each word. Why did she even care what happened to this despicable man. She watched his eyes darken slightly.
“A wizards word is bindin’ luv.” He said in his deep voice, all joking aside, as he rose his hand. “I swear on me wand and me magic. If ya let me down and return me wand, I will neh snatch ya…Tonight.” He added the last part just as she felt the magic stir the air around her. Both his and her wands grew warm in her hands. The strange wind that rustled the leaves around them and tossed their hair about died as quickly as it had begun, leaving them staring at each other.
“Well luv?” He asked expectantly, breaking the silence as he hovered a few feet away. “Are we threw hangin’ about?” He asked gesturing his hands at himself and his general predicament. He gave her a smirk and quirked his brow his mood quickly changing back to its previous state. Hermione hesitated and for a moment he thought she may just leave him there yet. She took a few steps away from the log pile he hovered above, looking as though she were ready to turn tail and run again. Then suddenly she flicked her wand and he fell, rather unceremoniously, onto the pile with an ungraceful ‘Oomph’
To his credit he righted himself quickly, covered in bits of dirt leaves and splinters. He put back on that devilish grin as he dusted himself off. Taking a moment to flick pieces of debris from his plaid trousers and adjusting his coat before deftly jumping from the pile and standing before the petite witch.
“Well?” He asked putting out his hand between them. She hesitated once again, not at all pleased with his closeness, before realizing the wizarding oath he’d taken was only valid if she did her part and handed over his wand. She stepped forward and placed the sleek handle into his gloved hand.
“Wonderful!” He barked out, startling her, and before she had a chance to realize what he was doing the tall Snatcher had leaned forward and grabbed her wand hand in his iron clad grip. “Now then luv.” the dark wizard started as he tightened his grip on her wrist until she could no longer keep hold of her wand. “I think a bit ‘o paybacks in order…”
