Chapter 2: The ‘Semi-Date’
A/N: Dedicated to all those who wrote lovely reviews, in particular Sarah and TokioAngel. Hope you enjoy!
Harry Potter was not trying to impress anyone. Just because he was wearing a new green shirt and was currently trying to tame his hair with some ‘amazing’ product Hermoine used, did not mean he was making an effort.
The fact that he was due to meet Draco Malfoy in an hours time had absolutely nothing to do with it.
An illusion Hermoine Granger shattered as soon as she poked her head around the door.
“Oh Harry! Look at you, you’re making such an effort for him!”
Harry dropped the bottle of hair potion. “I’m *not* making an effort for him… it’s not even a date anyway” Harry growled in frustration when a previously tamed cowlick sprang back into life.
Hermoine held her hand out. In it was the Cosmo flower and the olive branch, charmed to stay fresh and untouched.
“Thanks, Hermoine, think he’ll like it?”
“Of course he will. Anyway, are you nervous?”
“No! not at all” Harry denied, puffing his chest out.
“Oh okay. So you don’t really need any pointers from me then. Okay, have fun then, I’ll just be going-”
“No wait! Maybe I am, you know, a little bit nervous…” Harry grabbed a quill and some parchment from his desk. “Any pointers?”
Hermoine gave a long-suffering sigh and perched on the edge of his bed.
“First things first, Harry, let him talk. He invited you out tonight to speak to you, so pay attention. Show him that you’re listening. Compliment him; make him feel special, you know? ”
Furiously scribbling on his parchment, Harry looked up suddenly.
“Anything else, is that it?”
“Just be yourself, Harry” Hermoine soothed, smiling in affection at Harry’s scrawled notes. If only he was so attentive in class…
“If he likes you, you’ll know” Hermoine stood up, planning to make a move. She had a date herself lined up.
“Wait! How will I know?” Harry grabbed her hand, a panicked long in his eyes. For a boy who’d stood up to the most powerful dark lord of all time, he looked petrified of date. Hermoine shook her head in wonder.
“Well let’s see… classic signs of attraction are the dilation of the pupils, mirroring of body language, touching, blushing, toying with the hair, getting closer to the person, smiling-”
“Hold on, hold on!” Harry finished his notes and looked over the piece of parchment.
“Harry, it’s only a date, well, a ‘semi-date’” Hermoine sighed.
“You’re right. I can totally do this.” Harry smiled; all nerves seemingly vanished now he held the piece of parchment in his hands.
“Great, well, I’ll leave you to it” Hermoine gave Harry a quick kiss to his cheek and left the room, hoping everything went well for her best friend. God knows, Harry really needed a break…
The wind was howling, and Harry was starting to wish he hadn’t decided to wait for Draco so early. He wanted to show he was eager, but didn’t want to seem too keen. Just as Harry was considering taking a wonder round for five minutes to warm up he heard the faint pop of apparition and saw a sight that took his breath away.
Draco stood illuminated under one of the golden lamps outside the bar. His hair shone molton gold. He was dressed in a beautiful silver-blue shirt and black pants.
‘Holy shit, he’s so gorgeous’ was Harry’s first rational thought.
“Potter?”
“Draco! Hi” Harry swallowed nervously, and stuck a hand in his pocket. His fingers brushed the slip of parchment, and he felt a wave of confidence. He’d mesmerised everything he’d wrote on that list so he would be totally fine.
“Hello, Potter…you look different… have you styled you’re hair?”
“Oh, yeah, Hermoine let me this potion to put on it” Harry shrugged.
“Oh… it’s nice. Anyway, shall we? It’s freezing out here.”
Harry nodded and quickly made his way to the door and opened it. Draco looked up at him in surprise. It took a second or two before he realised Potter was holding it open for him.
That was… unexpected.
“Thank you, Potter”
“Welcome” Harry replied easily, stepping in after him, and smiling as he felt the warmth of the place wash over him. It was beautiful. Chandeliers, thick red carpets and oriental wallpaper.
“Wow, nice place” Harry commented, hoping he didn’t sound too common.
Draco shrugged and signalled for a waiter to come over to them.
“I’ve been here a few times. The staff are up themselves, but it’s not a bad place. It’s private. We can talk without being concerned”
The waiter came over, and after a minimal amount of gushing over who his patrons were; he led Harry and Draco over to a secluded table in an alcove. Draco slipped him a few galleons with the order of making sure no guests where allowed to stray too close to their table.
“Drink?” Harry asked.
“Red Wine please. Don Cherrie.” Draco said, watching Harry closely through his lashes.
Harry instantly ordered it, and then ordered a pint for himself.
Once the waiter had scurried away, an awkward silence fell.
Harry pulled out the Cosmos flower.
“This is for you. Peace offering.”
Draco accepted the flower and branch, twirling it in his fingers.
“Why, Potter, I didn’t know you knew the language of flowers” Draco smiled, a taint of red rising to his cheeks as he looked at the pretty white flower.
‘Oh my god. He’s blushing. YES!’
Restraining himself from pumping his fist in the air, Harry gave a small smile.
“I might have had a little help”
“Ah, let me guess, Miss Granger?”
“Yeah”
Their drinks came, and to occupy the silence, they both had a long sip of their drinks. Not liking the silence at all, Harry decided to steer the conversation a little bit. Perhaps Draco was nervous. He was the one who’d suggested meeting up for a drink to talk about his letter; perhaps he didn’t know where to start.
“So Draco, that letter you sent me. Really knocked me for six.”
Draco placed his glass down carefully, suddenly looking tense.
‘Way to go, Harry’ Harry berated himself, wondering what the hell to do to pick the mood up.
“ Well, I was thinking for a long while how I could contact you, but the media where all over you. Then I thought if I wrote to you when you were back in Hogwarts you might agree to meet up with me”
“I meant you, Draco. You’ve changed, it’s really shocked me”
Draco took a delicate sip of wine “I was only acting a complete bastard, Potter, therefore I haven’t changed, I am still the same.”
“It’s all new to me,” Harry admitted, looking at Draco closely as if he’d never seen him before. In the dim light of the bar, Draco’s eyes looked almost blue.
“Do you hate me, Potter?” Draco asked suddenly, drained his glass.
“What? No, Draco, I don’t! I never did, well not really, I mean I thought you were a bastard and all but…” Harry bit his lip nervously. “You’re different now”
Draco raised a brow “I’m the same”
“You’re different to me”
They looked at each other a moment, both trying to figure out what the other was thinking, until the waiter came over, Wine bottle poised in his hand to pour Draco another glass.
“Would sir like another beer?”
“Sure” Harry replied, inwardly cursing the waiter for his crap timing.
“ So what does this make us then?” Draco asked.
“Friends, I hope” Harry hedged. He smiled when he noticed Draco was running a finger over a delicate white petal of his flower.
“Friends…” Draco murmured.
“Yeah, Friends. You know, we can hang out, get to know each other…” Harry trailed off. Perhaps Draco knew he fancied him. What if it freaked him out? Just because he was gay didn’t mean he would like him in return. What if Hermoine had been way of the mark?
“Well, Harry, Friends then.”
Harry raised his drink and they both took a drink, eyes locked on each other.
Nah, Hermoine was right. Friends wouldn’t keep looking at each other like that. There was more to it.
“ I’m glad we’re friends, Draco” Harry said slowly “Maybe we could start to hang out?”
“And what does ‘hang out’ entail exactly?” Draco asked amused, a flush staining his cheeks.
Excited, Harry leaned forward “oh you know, sneaking out of school, going to pubs, just… you know spending time together?”
“Just you and I? Not Weasely? I’m sorry but I still don’t particularly like him”
“That’s great, just me and you.” Harry nodded “Maybe tomorrow night? I was thinking we could meet up after lights out? I’ve got something cool to show you.”
“ Oh yes? Well, I’m not busy tomorrow night. It’s a date then, Harry”
Harry spat out his beer.
Draco merely smiled.
Later that evening, Harry lay awake, a broad smile on his face as he gazed up at the canopy above his bed.
Things had gone so well. After the initial awkwardness he’d found out he and Draco actually had quite a bit in common. Draco liked to go for long walks and chat in cosy pubs and he loved sneaking out of school.
He also found out some unusual things about Draco. Like how he was allergic to citrus fruits, was a secret fan of the Weird Sisters, and how he enjoyed horse riding.
Harry was utterly charmed.
They’d be meeting up tomorrow night, and Harry had already bought some chocolates after Draco admitted having a huge sweet tooth.
He heard a gentle rap on his window and padded over to it, surprised to see Hedwig perched there, a letter in her beak.
“Hey girl” Harry greeted, stroking the soft feathers of her head. “Think that’s from Draco”
Harry took the letter and eagerly read it. Draco had written to thank him for a lovely evening, and had said he was looking forward to ‘hanging out’ with him tomorrow.
“Fuck, I really like him, Hedwig” Harry admitted as he carefully stowed Draco’s letter along with the first he’d sent in the bottom of his trunk.
Hedwig gave him a playful nip of her beak and took off, a tiny white speck on the night sky.
“Night then” Harry muttered, closing his window and heading back to bed. He lay awake for a long time, the night kept running over and over in his mind. Every little smile or blush he’d received from Draco made a warm feeling spread through him.
Eventually he fell asleep with a smile on his face.
The next morning at breakfast, Harry made sure to shoot Draco a smile as he walked into the great hall for breakfast.
Draco offered him a small smile and a blush, before joining his friends. Again that strange warm feeling flared in his chest and Harry couldn’t take his eyes of the Blonde Slytherin as he began to delicately eat his breakfast.
“So, Harry” Hermoine dropped onto the bench next to him.
“Morning, Hermoine” Harry said cheerfully, taking a sip of pumpkin juice. “Something you wanted?”
“Details, obviously. How did it go?”
“Brilliant. He was blushing and I think we ended up flirting towards the end of it. We’re sneaking out of school for a bit tonight- hey! Don’t give me that look, you’re the one who said we should meet up, so we are.”
“But Harry-”
“No, it will be fine, Hermoine. I’ve got the cloak, remember? I was thinking of taking him_”
“Hey guys” Ron sleepily slumped onto the bench and immediately began piling his plate. Harry couldn’t help but compare his friend’s noisy guzzling to Draco’s leisurely place.
“Hi Ron, slept late again, have we?” Hermoine tsked, but her eyes seemed to sparkle.
‘Ugh, will not even think about what those two got up to last night’ Harry thought, feeling physically ill at the thought of it.
“Hey Mate, just remembered, we’re having a bit of a get together in the common room tonight, you know firewhisky, porn you in or…”
Ron snapped his mouth shut with a click.
“What were you saying, Ronald?” Hermoine asked sweetly.
“Uh, nothing, just some of the guys have… you know, Porn. Not that I’d look it at! I have you after all, just saying in case Harry fancied it…” Ron trailed off weakly, looking at Harry for back up.
“Sorry, Ron, I’ve got plans tonight” Harry shrugged.
“Plans? You were out last night, mate are you seeing someone?”
“No, we’re just friends… for now”
“Who is it?” Ron asked, looking around the table “is it Gin, you two dating again?”
Hermoine chuckled and patted Ron’s back.
“You’re not going to like it, Ron, but Harry here has his eye on a dragon”
Ron blanched. “Woah, Mate, I’m pretty easy going but even I draw the line at that kinda stuff”
Sighing at Ron’s ignorance, Hermoine pointedly looked over at the Slytherin table. Harry did the same. Draco, who must have felt a trio of Gryffindor stares focused on him, looked up.
Harry gave Draco a smile.
Draco smiled back.
Ron fainted.
