Nineteen Years Later…
“So that’s little Scorpius,” Ron said under his breath. “Make sure you beat him in every test, Rosie. Thank God you inherited your mother’s brains.”
“Ron, for heaven’s sake,” said Hermione, half stern, half amused. “Don’t try to turn them against each other before they’ve even started school!”
“You’re right, sorry,” Ron said, but unable to help himself, he added, “Don’t get too friendly with him, though, Rosie. Granddad Weasley would never forgive you if you married a pureblood.”
“Hey!”* James said as he reappeared without any of his luggage. Harry wasn’t listening as his son started ranting about his Godson and niece. His eyes were fixed on the first year saying his goodbyes to the now aged Narcissa Malfoy. ‘He looks like Draco…’ Harry thought solemnly as those familiar-yet-not grey eyes flicked over to him before quickly darting away.
After Draco’s death, Narcissa and Lucius had been understandably devastated and Harry was all but certain it was only their pureblood fear of not having an heir that they’d tried to have another child. They’d lost two before finally managing to have Scorpius, and now as a late life baby, Harry couldn’t help but wonder how much longer the boy would have his parents around. Already the Malfoy’s were showing their age. They still spoiled Scorpius like they had Draco but they just couldn’t do some of the things they’d done with Draco and Harry thought they may not even want to. At least, from reputation, Scorpius seemed a bit more grounded than Draco had been, thankfully without all of the hardships Draco’d gone through to get that way.
Harry shook his head some and forced his attention back to the crowd of his friends and family. They said their last goodbyes before the kids boarded the train. “Harry are you sure you want to do this?” Hermione asked for the millionth time.
“Yes, ‘Mione. I’m sure,” Harry assured her. “Teaching at Hogwarts will be good for me. I’ve always loved it there. Plus I can keep an eye on the kids… make sure we don’t get anymore souvenirs sent back home…” he added with a slight mutter of annoyance towards the end.
Ron and Hermione exchanged a look before the redhead took Harry off to the side. “Harry, we’re just worried about you, mate,” he said in a whisper.
Harry smiled a bit though it didn’t reach his eyes. “You shouldn’t be worried about me. Worry about the kids. But we’ll all make it through. I’ll make sure of it.”
“But quitting your job to teach… it just seems sort of… unusual,” Ron said, clearly struggling to articulate his worry.
“I needed the change. Besides… what am I going to do at the ministry now? Work behind a desk? That’s not why I became and Auror, Ron,” Harry said patiently. They’d had this discussion before and nothing had changed to make Harry decide anything different. He was going to go teach at Hogwarts for a year or two and get his life back together. The fact that Headmistress McGonagall had arranged for Lily to come and live in Harry’s quarters so that the whole family could still be together just made it even more convenient. “Plus I’ll get to see even more of Neville… who wouldn’t love that?” Harry added with a laugh.
Ron still didn’t look convinced. “Ron, really… I’ll be fine. Now, me and Lily have to get going if we’re to make it onto the train,” Harry said, ending the discussion with the mention of the very real deadline they had.
After a little bit of a dash to get him and Lily situated in one of the back cars, Harry allowed himself to sit back into the familiar seat cushions with a sigh of relief. Truth be told he was more than looking forward to this change of jobs. Ever since Ginny, well, he’d been feeling a bit trapped in his own home. He needed to start over and Hogwarts had always been the best place to give him that. In more than one way that was where his life really had started and it was where the uncertainty had ended. It was the best place to go to find a new niche for himself.
Most of the trip was uneventful and at the opening feast the students were in awe that their DADA teacher was going to be Harry Potter. Harry tried not to be annoyed by the murmurs that the announcement received. The sorting was expected. Al and Rose were sent to Gryffindor with the rest of the family and Scorpius Malfoy was a Slytherin. Some family ties just couldn’t be broken in one generation.
Harry tried to enjoy the feast but had a hard time with it. Mostly it was because with Albus, his own spitting image, sitting across from Scorpius, the near clone of Draco, memories were starting to crop up that Harry had not anticipated and had not wanted to deal with.
He could clearly recall every secret glance and tiny gesture the pale boy had exchanged with him through their third to fifth years. Harry had never dared to tell anyone of the secret affair he’d had with his supposed greatest rival. But that had probably been for the best as he didn’t have to explain to anyone how the constant arguments over Voldemort had ended things either. Harry had never truly forgiven Draco for not listening and joining the Death Eaters and then going and getting himself killed in such an awful way. It hurt every time he thought about it.
Harry took a long sip of his wine to wash the bitterness away as he settled against his seat. He would never forgive Draco Malfoy. Not as long as he lived. He could only hope Draco’s baby brother that he never knew would turn out better. And Harry did hope that. Because he didn’t think he could take seeing another beautiful boy ripped to shreds in a pool of blood in a dungeon somewhere. There had been so little of Draco left the only way they’d been able to identify the remains was when the skin had been magically pieced back together to show who it had been. Harry took another drink of his wine.
He did not need to be thinking of that. That scar was supposed to be healed already. Just like his lightning shaped one on his forehead. Harry had come here to heal new scars, not old ones.
When the feast was finally over, Harry collected Lily from where she’d been eating with her brothers and the two of them made their way to their rooms. “Daddy, do you think Mommy would have liked to come live here in Hogwarts with us?” Lily asked as they walked through the ever-changing hallways.
Harry felt himself stiffen slightly but hoped his daughter hadn’t noticed. “I’m sure she would have. We met here you know,” he told her with a grin.
“I know, Daddy,” Lily said with as much exasperation as a nine year old could produce, which was quite a lot actually.
Suddenly, a pearly shape floated through the wall right in front of them and Harry quickly pulled back so that they wouldn’t get the unpleasant sensation of walking through a ghost. “Oh, Hello, Nick,” Harry said once he recognized which ghost it was.
“Hello again, Harry. It’s been a while,” Nearly Headless Nick said with a slight smile. “I do hope you’re not planning to fill this year with any heroics and death defying feats like all your other years here…”
Harry laughed some at that. “No Nick, that’s the furthest thing from my mind right now. Besides, I’m not a student anymore… I think disturbing the peace is supposed to be mostly reserved for them.”
“Ah, yes, a task which young James seems very prone to take up,” Nick stated. Harry cleared his throat a bit awkwardly at that.
“Hopefully I’ll be able to put a damper on that this year though,” Harry said rubbing the back of his head. “Now, if you don’t mind, we really should be getting to bed…”
Nick instantly floated to the side. “Oh, of course, don’t let me keep you! Perhaps we can chat some other time this year. Welcome back to Hogwarts Harry.”
Harry gave Nick a smile and a nod before leading his daughter through the corridors again until they reached their rooms. “Daddy who was that Ghost?” she asked as Harry said the password to open the door (Redcap) and let them in.
“That was Nearly Headless Nick. He’s the House Ghost for Gryffindor,” Harry supplied as he looked around the main room of his quarters. It was a fairly cozy living area with a nice couch in front of the fireplace and a desk off to one side. There were three doors one of which was open enough that Harry could see it was a bathroom. “Now, go on and get ready for bed, Lily,” Harry said as he went to go see which of the rooms would be his.
He found it easily enough and sighed some at the large four-poster bed in the middle of the room. It was more than he needed that was for sure. But the heavy drapes in rich crimson and the golden ties made him smile with nostalgia. He was back only this time as a Teacher. He went over to the window across from his room and looked down with a sigh at the grounds. Off in the distance he could see the Whomping Willow and the lake. He could even see the glowing squares that was Hagrid’s hut and his smile grew. ‘Yes,’ he thought, ‘this was just what I needed.’
