Draco woke the next day to find his dread had been all for nothing. He went to class after class and no one knew a thing or if they did they were keeping very quiet about it. There no shady looks, burst of laugh, crude jokes or fake crying not even any side remarks about being weak. None of them knew, it appeared Granger hadn’t told anyone. She had kept her word even though she had every reason not to. It was unbelievable why on earth should she keep silent for him? She owed him nothing, in fact quite the opposite. Draco used to give her hell and now it was her turn and she had done nothing. He knew she wasn’t the type to back down from a fight, he still remembered that time in the third year when she had slapped him. her enjoyment of their arguments had always come from pride, pride at knowing she was better than him, pride at knowing she could win, pride at being able to humiliated him as he had done to her many a times. And here the ultimate humiliation had been handed to her and she had let it pass. So what was going on?
He headed into the meeting that night trying not to let it bother him. An act which was not helped by the fact that when he enter the room she smiled at him. It was a big smile but it was still a definite smile. Granger smiling at him, what was going on? He took his usual seat next to her trying to wonder what it all meant. For the entire meeting he couldn’t help but be aware of Granger. When she shift in her seat or twirl her hair, even once when she drop her pen by mistake, he almost felt her movements like waves coming off her body. Also he could smell her, she had a rather unusual scent of honey, amber, orange and some other exotic note that he couldn’t name. He shuck his head, this is the most he had thought about Granger since the Yule ball; she had been stunning there was no way to deny that. He remembered the way that blue dress had flown around her body. He also remembered that momentary flash he had of her last night, of her summiting to him. Thank fully the meeting was a short and required next to no input from him so no one seemed to notice his lack of attention to the meeting itself. He was one the first out of his chair when it was over.
“Malfoy have you got a moment?” Granger asked. Draco froze now he was in for it. Maybe she had decided on private humiliation instead of public or worse still maybe she had noticed his preoccupation with her and his lack of attention with more important things. Either way this was not good.
Hermione waited until the room had cleared and then making sure the door was close, she pulled his tie from her bag.
“Here, you left it last night and I thought you might need it back” she said handing it out to him.
“O” he said. Not what he had expected at all. “Thanks” he said turning to leave then he changed tack and turn around to face her again.
“Why?” he asked. She gave small laugh
“Because I figure you only have the two ties which means you will need you spare back. Besides I was hardly going to steal it.”
“No I mean you didn’t tell anyone about last night. Why not?” he said this was a question that need an answer since he just couldn’t fathom it.
“Why would I?”
“Because I was a jackass to you” to Draco’s surprise she laughed.
“That was ages ago, you were just a kid. Besides I’m not the vengeful type. I also find no pleasure in humiliating people for no reason or making them feel more awful then they already do.” She took a step close. “Malfoy I’m not going to say anything partly because it’s none of my business but mostly because I think you have an enough to deal with.”
“O well thanks then I guess” he said not really what else to say. How did she know what he had to deal with was she guessing put rumours and facts together to make the assumption that he was evil like his father. But that didn’t make sense that wouldn’t fit her being nice to him. If Granger thought he was going to join the deatheaters she would not be nice to him. But she couldn’t know of his plans and he certainly wasn’t going to give anything to go on.
“You’re welcome” he turned to leave again but she stopped him.
“Malfoy, I know this must seem weird coming from me but if ever need someone to talk to I’m here”
“Why would you do that for me?” More suspicion but she couldn’t know.
“Because everybody needs someone and no one should be alone”
“What makes you think I’m alone?” she didn’t answer at first instead she moved close again and slowly ever so slowly she reached up and stroked his cheek. Draco stood there stunned not being able to move or speak.
“Because you are, I can see the torture, the pain in your eyes. It’s so much” she spoke quietly and yet it made her all the more intense. Draco stood there dying to move closer but not daring to, for just a second all he wanted was her, her purity, her goodness, just her. Yes he wanted that: her comfort, not to be alone. He wanted to never be alone again. Then the moment was gone Hermione moved away from him, smiled once more then left. Draco stood there confused not entirely sure what had just happened.
Hermione slumped into her favourite arm chair in the Gryffindor tower her head still full of Malfoy. She couldn’t have helped what she had just done; Malfoy had always had a certain lure about him. She didn’t mean his incredible good looks or intelligence or even his charm although those didn’t help, it wasn’t something most people noticed about him because it wasn’t on his surface. It was his eyes to Hermione they had always remind her of the ocean under storm. They were grey and icy but yet beautiful they held in the a life of torment and somehow it just made her feel the urge to take the pain away from him, to protect from his own life troubles. But she knew that was ridiculous for numerous reasons.
“Hermione, what the correct amount of bear claw for a sleep draught?” asked Ron interrupting her thoughts.
“None what so ever unless you wish to get a D on that.” She said not looking at him.
“O great, so what do you put in a sleeping draught?” he said already starching out his words. The sound annoyed her.
“Here’s a novel idea use a book for once, I’m tired.” That wasn’t strictly true she was just fed up with Ron lately since he was going through one of lack of commitment phases. About once every few months Ron would get as he put it bored of life, so he would stop putting effort into his work, cleaning up after himself and worst of all paying attention to Lavender. After being with Lavender for nearly a year now he was getting tired of her but instead breaking up with her he would basically ignore her and pay attention to Hermione foolishly hoping that she would change his mind about dating him. But Hermione wasn’t having it. It wasn’t that Ron wasn’t a good man; it was that his idea of happiness was not the same as hers. Hermione had always had quite high standards when it came to dating in the sense that she wanted a man and not a boy as such she had gain the reputation as a prude which wasn’t true. She a few admires of course the usual round of boys that always took to asking her to the school balls but she simply was interesting in being talked to death with quidditch all night to then be dragged off to a broom closet for all of a minute of sex then the night to be over. She wanted more than that. She also had career plans a life she didn’t wanted to be the good little slave wife sitting at home doing all the chores, looking after the 5 kids while he went to work. That was Ron idea of a life not hers.
“Are you sure you can’t help me with this?” Ron tried again. She just looked at him holding out his paper for her to take so sure she was going to give him what he wanted. Instead she got out of her chair and left the common room heading for the Head Pupils area, or HPA for short.
