Severus looked at Anthea with a studious gaze. He wondered why Lily had drawn his attention to the odd Ravenclaw, especially when she knew he only had eyes for Lily. With a frown, Severus thought darkly that was probably the case; his love of her was making it awkward to pursue that dimwit Gryffindor she seemed so enthralled with. Severus really detested that James Potter. Just the thought of that arrogant jerk made his face tense with quiet rage.
"Um, Severus...?" Anthea quietly mumbled, peering shyly over her sketchbook. Severus snapped out of his angry thoughts and looked at her. "What makes you happy?" she asked, glancing back down at her page. "You always look so angry when you study... I want to draw you happy," she explained, nibbling thoughtfully on her pencil. She hoped she wasn't being to forward, and his caught off guard expression did little to cease her worry.
"Well, hm. I like potions quite a lot. That takes actual skill, unlike foolish wand waving," he said, looking thoughtful. "I also like Dark Arts, but Lily hates that..." he said, face contourting with frustration towards the end.
"You really like Lily, huh?" Anthea asked, watching her pencil move. Severus blushed, his pale cheeks expressing a smooth redness. Anthea guessed she hit the nail on the head.
"We've known each other since we were small... She's my best friend," he said, though with a grumble. Clearly, he was wanting something more that wasn't going to happen. While Anthea wasn't really one to pay attention to gossip, it was well known that James Potter and Lily Evans were dating, and clearly happy together. This fact was rather upseting to Severus.
"If its any consolation, I think you're quite a bit better than James," Anthea offered with a mumble. Her cheeks were quite pink, and she felt like she had stepped over the line. Severus didn't say anything, only slipped into his own mind. It was quite the compliment, but coming from a girl, no matter how cute, meant nothing unless it was Lily. He felt disheartened when he thought of those coy eyes as she directed him to Anthea's direction, and that warm smile and excited voice as she urged him to make a new friend who was clearly interested. He wondered if she was just growing tired of looking after him, defending him. Her new group of friends, and, he supposed, boyfriend, sneered at him for being a Slytherin, especially one so enthralled by the Dark Arts. Severus couldn't help it if the subject was so fascinating, could he? He curled his knees up to his chest and rested his chin on them, frowning. He rather disliked Lily's choice in company.
"You're really brilliant with potions, you know," Anthea broke him out of his train of thought, and he caught her smiling shyly at him. "We have class together. Slughorn, he never yells at you. He seems to really favor you. I try, and I really like the subject, but it seems I'm not very good at it..." she said, scribbling quickly. She put her pencil down and forced herself to look him in the eye. He could see the amount of nerve it took her to do so.
"I know Lily put you up to letting me sit with you. I don't know why; I don't really know her all that well. But... I would like it if I could sit with you more. I know I'm kinda quiet and all... but you seem like a nice person, and I'd like to get to know you better," she said, speaking quickly as she implored him. Severus shrugged, somewhat bewildered at the small amount of attachment she seemed to have made given their short time together. A moment of silence passed as he pondered, which seemed a moment too soon to Anthea. She ripped the page from her book and handed it to him as she stood, and started backing away.
"You don't have to if you don't want to, but I'd like for you to have that anyway. See you in class," she said, and turned, walking quickly. Severus could almost see her panties when her speed and the breeze lifted her skirt to tantilizing heights, and he flushed at the thought. When he examined the drawing, he was taken aback. While the work in her sketchbook was remarkably good, she was still working from a distance. Being able to see him close, she was able to make an incredibly life-like drawing, capturing the moment he thought of Lily and smiled.
Severus decided it wouldn't be so bad to hang around with Anthea after all.
