The dining hall was still full of people when Harry finally entered, so he figured he was only a few minutes late. He quickly found where Ron and Hermione were sitting and sat down with his best friends. He packed his plate full of sausages, and eggs and bacon, feeling especially ravenous on this particular morning. He stuffed his mouth as his friends talked around him, only joining the conversation once he had downed half of his plate.
“How did your scrolls turn out Harry?” Hermione asked, he could tell she didn’t approve of the way he was eating, “If you had started earlier, I could have taken a look over them.”
“They’re fine Hermione, Luna looked them over for me” he said in between mouthfuls.
“Luna? Right mental she is. You sure you should let her give your work a once over? Probably filled it with all sorts of weird things?” Ron was said, in between mouthfuls of his own food.
“Well I still wish I could have given it a look myself” Hermione said frowning at them. “Even though… Luna already did.”
“Did what? Fill the margins with pictures of Whorbacks or whatever… Ow will you guys stop hitting me?” Harry slapped Ron in the back of the head.
“Jeez will you give it a rest Ron,Luna did a great job helping me, next best thing to having Hermione there.” He said, laughing as Hermione frowned, obviously disliking the comparison.
“Well anyway, will you slow down Harry? You’re eating like Ron this morning.” She said, abruptly changing the subject.
“With the kind of dreams he’s been having no wonder he’s hungry” Ron replied before shoveling a forkful of scrambled eggs into his own mouth.
Harry’s face just flushed in response, and Ron laughed, slapping him on the back jovially. It was obvious by her facial expression that and Hermione had no idea what Ron meant.
“What’s that’s supposed to mean? You’re not having dreams about You Know Who again, are you?” Hermione asked with worry etched on her face.
“Not unless You Know Who has long blonde hair and a pair of tits to die for” Ron replied, through a mouthful of food.
It took a minute for everything to fall into place in Hermione’s head then she looked at Ron reproachfully. Harry grew worried for a minute until he realized Ron was talking about Fleur again, not a certain blonde Ravenclaw, and relaxed.
“Ew Ron, that’s disgusting.” Hermione said in shock. “I’m sure Harry wasn’t dreaming about that, were you Harry?’
Harry mumbled something about Quidditch through his mouthful of food, but it apparently didn’t fool anyone present, because Ron just laughed while Hermione frowned. The people around them gave mixed looks of confusion, mirth, and disapproval at their conversation topic.
“Aww don’t be such a prude ‘Mione. Nothing wrong with a little dream fun, everyone gets up to it once in awhile.” Ron said, his plate was almost finished and he began to pile more food on.
“Well I don’t.” Hermione said with a sense of finality, obviously wanting to change the subject. “I’m just glad Harry is alright.”
“I’m fine Hermione, and don’t listen to Ron,” he emphasized that last part, “he’s just being a prat.”
Harry began looking around the dining hall for the real focus of his dream; he needed to speak to her about that kiss, just to clarify it for his own psyche that it had been nothing sexual or romantic. It was just Luna being Luna, Harry thought again while searching up and down the Ravenclaw table until his eyes came to rest on the young blonde haired girl. He laughed to himself, probably a way to ward against Blibbering Humdingers, and absentmindedly thought about the clouds from his dream again.
Luna looked like she woke up on the wrong side of the bed that morning. Her hair was even more of mess then usual and there were small dark crescents under her eyes, as if she didn’t get enough sleep. She was playing with the food in front of her with her spoon, just drawing circles distractedly. Harry, not really noticing her state from across the room, considered going over there right now to thank her for the help, but he didn’t want anyone else to hear him question her on the kiss lest it be misconstrued. He opted to wait until after breakfast and catch her when she left. He couldn’t help but notice how alone she looked at the Ravenclaw table. No one at the table was talking to her, or attempting to include her in their conversations.
He didn’t have long to wait though, Luna growing seemingly disinterested in her food, stood up and began to make her way out of the dining hall. He excused himself from his table as well and followed her out of the large double doors.
The main hall was fairly empty as most people were still eating, and he called out after her once they were in the hall. She didn’t stop, almost as if she hadn’t heard him and kept going. He frowned and followed her, calling out her name a few more times before he finally ran up behind her and grabbed her by her shoulders and turned her to face him.
“Oy what’s wrong Luna, didn’t you hear me?” he asked letting his hands drop from her shoulders.
“Sorry Harry. I was just thinking.” She said truthfully, she had been thinking, mainly about how she was now destined to be alienated by the small amount of friends she had managed to accumulate. She didn’t know what to expect from Harry, and the hall they were in was empty and off the normal path of students. Luna braced herself for the exchange, she had gotten used to being made fun of by the other students but she expected that when Harry did it, it would feel much worse.
“I just wanted to thank you for helping me last night Luna,” he began, deciding to get the easiest part of the exchange over first. “I don’t think I would have finished the assignment without your help.”
“It was my pleasure Harry,” Luna said nodding, hoping in her mind that the next part had only been a dream. “Although being up late is known to make you susceptible to all sorts of nasty things.”
“Well Luna, that’s interesting but I just want to know what happened last night.” It wasn’t as elegantly as he had wanted to approach the subject but he wasn’t known for his charm. “You know after…. the kiss.”
“I’m really sorry, Harry, I sort of just got carried away. I mean…” She took a deep breath and steeled herself, it was going to be hard to say this. “I like you, but I know nothing could ever come of it. I didn’t mean to kiss you like that. Please don’t tell Ginny, I couldn’t stand it if she wouldn’t talk to me over this.”
Luna had decided to put it all out there, and beg for Harry’s forgiveness and understanding. She felt as if she had breached the trust that her and Ginny had and was torn between her feelings for her friend and her growing feelings for the boy in front of her. She reasoned that if anyone would be willing to forgive her it would be Harry, who she knew had a big heart, and, in her mind, was the epitome of kindness. She breathed deeply as a way to show him she was finished speaking and stared directly at him, waiting, in equal parts fear and anxiousness, for his reply.
Harry, for the most part, was a bit shocked by her admission. Despite last night, he still couldn’t imagine Luna having those sorts of feelings for anyone, let alone him. He had a few female admirers, less then most people would think, but he would have never imagined Luna Lovegood to be one of them. He found his mind drifting back to the dream from the night before, the feel of dream Luna’s lips against his face, the feel of her soft skin under his roaming hands, the places those hands were going, but he quickly shook the thoughts from his head. He knew he had to focus on the here and now, handling this badly could be disastrous and Ginny would most likely hand him his balls on a platter if he hurt Luna’s feelings. Up until a few minutes ago he wasn’t sure if Luna had even had feelings in the normal sense, but he was learning something new everyday.
“Um, Luna I was… um…. When you say like do you mean like or like like?” Harry asked, failing miserably at the task of remaining coherent.
“I’m not sure I understand what you mean” Luna hadn’t been expecting a clarifying question, and she tilted her head, visibly puzzled by his choice of words.
“Like do you like me as a friend, or would you like to do non-friend things like last night” he replied, and then replayed what he had just said in his head before making a mental note to practice talking to girls.
“Harry, I can’t say I didn’t enjoy last night, I love spending time around you, but I…”she started, her voice was sad and distant, took a deep breath and continued, “Harry you’re much too good for someone like me.”
Harry was taken aback by this statement, this was only the second time he was sure about a girl having feelings for him, and Cho Chang hadn’t even come out and said it like this. He wasn’t exactly sure how to feel but he didn’t like Luna being down on herself like that, and she looked especially vulnerable at the moment. Everything was happening too fast, if he could just stop time for a moment and think about what he was going to say things might turn out better. He never realized he had such a chivalrous streak but seeing her like this he knew he had to make her feel better.
“Luna I don’t know what to say, except that you are definitely not too good for me” he felt that this was the way to go, she needed a confidence boost. “I mean you’re smart, funny, pretty, um you have a very interesting personality…”
He kept going but at a certain point he was just listing adjectives that were getting more and more arbitrary. Luna had become distracted by the fact that he didn’t immediately shoot her down, or worse laugh, which is what she was expecting. She even felt her heart give a little jump when he called her pretty, and wondered if he had actually said, and meant, it. But she couldn’t let herself be distracted by this, she was sure of her redheaded friend’s feelings for Harry, even if she was dating Dean Thomas at the moment. She felt a little pang of resentment at that thought, but quickly pushed it aside. It wasn’t Ginny’s fault she was pretty and guys liked her, she did wish that someone would show a bit of interest in her, and hopefully that person would be Harry.
“…and barefoot, and blonde… and a bloody good kisser,” Harry let that last part slip out in his haste to come up with more descriptive words and felt his face became hot in response.
In his defense, he didn’t actually mean Luna, it wasn’t that he hadn’t enjoyed their brief kiss but he meant dream Luna, and that was probably not the same thing. Luna’s eyes grew a little wider in shock but she was determined to not mess up her friendship with Ginny, even if he did have those wonderful deep green eyes. She shook her head, closed her eyes and counted to 5 to regain her composure. Harry barely noticed as he was looking around for a hole to crawl into and die, after embarrassing himself like that.
“Thank you Harry,” was all she managed to get out in response, but a smile played at the corners of her mouth.
“No problem,” Harry figured that if it made her feel a bit better it was worth the embarrassment it caused him. “But like I said, any guy would be lucky to have you. Heck I would be lucky to have you.”
‘Shut up Harry, shut up before you dig yourself in too deep’, Harry’s inner monologue was seemingly not getting through, as he continued to say things off the top of his head. All he knew was that he needed to get out of this quickly. Get some time to think and then come back when his mind wasn’t filling with images of clouds and Luna.
“Uh Luna I really need to get to class,” Harry lied as he had the morning free, but his mouth was still running on autopilot. “Why don’t we finish this talk later, um Hogsmeade’s this weekend, we should go together.”
Harry couldn’t believe he said that. In the span of 5 minutes he had told Luna she was a good kisser and had asked her to go with him to Hogsmeade. He needed to stop talking and leave before he said anything about her panties or something worse. Luna for her part also couldn’t believe what she had heard, had Harry just asked her out, she felt as though she was dreaming the whole experience. She would just have to go with it for now, and if she found that she woke up in her bed and it was all a dream then so be it.
“Okay Harry, I’ll meet you in front of the school at noon, if that’s okay” she said, her voice tinged with cautious excitement.
“That’ll be fine,” Harry heard his voice crack and go up an octave as he said that, making him cringe.
“Oh dear Harry, don’t you know that’s a sign of a Blibbering Humdinger infestation in your hair” she said, a note of worry in her dreamy voice.
“Really, well I better go take care of that right now,” He was glad to have any excuse to leave “I’ll see you this weekend, bye.”
It wasn’t the most nonchalant exit ever made, but he managed not to trip and fall on his way down the hall. He heard Luna call something out after him, but he was already down the hall and in the bathroom before he stopped. After turning the cold water faucet all the way, he cupped his hands together under the stream and splashed some of the cold water into his face in an attempt to regain his senses. How had everything gone so wrong so quickly, he wondered as the cold sting of the water left his face? He eventually calmed down and reasoned that this wasn’t so bad; he had never actually said the word ‘date’ so that meant it wasn’t one, right? He really needed to ask someone else’s opinion on this, but Hermione, Ginny, and Ron were out of the question. All three of them would press him until he told them the full story, and then they would most likely laugh him out of the common room. He felt a tinge of sadness as he wished Sirius was still alive to ask but pushed the feelings away. Maybe he could shoot a letter to Lupin or even ask Dumbledore, although it seemed a bit extreme to ask the headmaster’s opinion on the subject. In the end he just settled on the fact that they were just two friends going to Hogsmeade together to talk, were most certainly not going on a date, and that he would write Lupin to confirm it.
Luna, on the other hand, was pleasantly surprised by the outcome of the conversation, if not a little worried about the state of Harry’s hair. She had gone in expecting to be ridiculed, maybe even yelled at, but had come out of the exchange with a, well she wasn’t really sure what she had. Was it a date? She wished she could have asked Harry, but she didn’t want to seem ignorant on something like that. She couldn’t ask Ginny, she knew that much, it is not as if she wanted to hide it from her but she wasn’t sure she should tell her about this just yet. She peered out of the window nearby, just in time to see the giant squid breach the surface of the lake, and sighed deeply. For some reason this gave her a good idea, the back of the Quibbler had a small dating advice column. Usually it was more for things akin to dating a werewolf, or zombie, or vampire, but the woman who ran it had always been a good friend of the family, and the closest thing to an aunt that Luna had, so she figured she would send her an Owl asking for advice.
Both Luna and Harry wrote a letter to their respective confidants that night, both letters expressed their confusion over the turn of events and asked for the elder’s sage wisdom about the subject. Luna received her letter first at breakfast the next morning along with a small brown parcel.
“Oh Luna, sweetie, I’m so proud of you. You’re such a beautiful young girl, the spitting image of your mum at that age, I was beginning to wonder if the boys at Hogwarts had gone blind since last I’d been there. In regards to your question though, from what you told me I’d definitely say he asked you on a date, and it is about bloody time if you ask me. But from what I’ve gleaned he seems like a normal boy, nothing too difficult about that, if he was a werewolf or something you would have to keep a bit of raw meat in your purse. This is a perfect time to wear that outfit I sent you for your birthday. But you’ll do fine. I sent you a little present along with the owl. Give your father my love. Oh and for the love of all that is magical do something about your hair.
-Auntie Em”
Curious, Luna unwrapped the package and found a small bottle of perfume and small card on with Auntie Em’s handwriting on it.
“Don’t worry it isn’t anything magical, just a little perfume to spice things up… Oh and make sure you use protection.”
Luna felt her face grow hot at that last line, and placed the perfume in her pocket, she would have to test it to make sure what her aunt said was true, and that their was no magic involved. If this was a date like her Aunt said then she didn’t want any magical help in wooing Harry, she could never live with herself if that happened and he found out. She needed him to like her for her, not to be magically coerced into it. The letter had brightened her spirits and the prospect of a first date with Harry had her infinitely more excited. She found her hunger returning and dug into the pudding in front of her with gusto.
Harry on the other hand had to wait another day to receive his letter from Lupin, and it was much less helpful then he had been expecting. Much like Luna’s letter, his also came with a small package, but this one was obviously a book based on its dimensions.
“Harry I hope my letter catches you at a good time. From what you told me you sound just like your father, he was never much of a ladies’ man, that was more Sirius, he must have nearly thrown up when he asked your mother out for the first time. But don’t worry it gets easier with time and experience. Speaking of which I know Hogwarts is a great school but I find that they sometimes neglect the basic educational necessities of young men and women. I included a book with this letter that should make things easier. Don’t neglect your studies and good luck on your date.”
-Lupin
Lupin’s letter had not been very enlightening but maybe his book would be. He decided that he would open the package later since breakfast was almost over. He didn’t get around to it until later that night in the common room, which was pretty empty except for a few kids studying at tables; Harry sat alone at one of them. At first Harry couldn’t understand what Lupin had meant by ‘basic educational necessities’ but when he opened up his present it became painfully, and embarrassingly, clear. Inside the parcel was a small book entitled, You and Your Wand: A Young Wizard’s Guide to Safe Sex. Some of the pages had little tabs in them to mark important sections, and Lupin had even highlighted a few relevant sections and added margin notes. Harry idly wondered if maybe he should compare the handwriting to the “Half Blood Prince’s” potions text.
“What ya got there, Harry?” He heard Ron’s voice behind him.
Harry almost jumped out of his skin as he hid the book in his cloak.
“Whoa easy mate, didn’t mean to scare you” Ron said as he took a seat next to Harry . “Bit jumpy, eh, ya hiding something?”
“No, no it’s just a… a book from Lupin. Lupin sent me a book” he said, slowly regaining his composure.
“Oh, anything good? Give us a look” Ron said holding his hand out for Harry to pass him the book. “Bet it’s full of useful spells to use against Death Eaters. We should pass it around to the other members of the old D.A. too.”
Harry had a brief flash of what would happen to him if everyone he knew saw him with a book like that, with meticulous notes in it as well. He didn’t know if you could die of embarrassment but he was sure it could at least put you in a coma if you were subjected to it in those doses.
‘’Uh… Later Ron, I just got it, haven’t had a chance to look through it myself yet” he said quickly, trying to dismiss his friend’s curiosity.
“Don’t be like that Harry, I’ll give it right back” He said as Hermione took her seat across from them.
“You’ll give what right back?” Hermione asked, sitting across from them at the table.
“Lupin sent Harry a book” Ron responded.
“Oh really Harry? I’d love to see it too, Professor Lupin always assigned the most interesting readings” Hermione’s eyes always lit up when books were mentioned and this time was no exception.
“Well… um… I just told Ron that I hadn’t read it yet, and I wanted to be the first to read it so…” his voice trailed away slowly, as they just stared at him.
“I just want to see it Harry, stop being such a child about it” Hermione said, now she too was intently focused on the book.
“Yea mate, give it over” Ron said, but Hermione had already grown tired of the exchange and pulled out her wand.
Hermione had obviously become fed up with Harry hiding things from her, especially books that she deemed to be important. Before Harry could react she had summoned the book from his cloak, he fumbled for it and managed to knock it off course but Ron had caught it in his hand as it flew into the air.
“Nice teamwork Hermione, now let’s just see what Lupin sent him” Ron’s jaw dropped open as he read the title of the book, and then he immediately burst out in a fit of laughter.
“What’s so funny?” Hermione asked a baffled look on her face.
Ron didn’t stop laughing, just handed the book across the table to Hermione, whose face grew scarlet as soon as she scanned the cover. It didn’t stop her from opening to the first few pages and scanning them briefly, then closing the book. She took a deep breath and her face slowly lost the intense shade of red it had become. Ron was still laughing like a hyena, and his own face had grown red from lack of oxygen. He was silenced when Hermione glared at him, although a few chuckles did escape here and there. Once she had gained her composure back she closed the book and placed it face down on the table in front of them. Ron lost control again and started laughing, louder than before, causing people around them to stare at them.
“Will you stop that Ron it isn’t funny” Hermione said.
“You… You… You and your Wand?! Hahaha I think I’m gonna piss my pants” Ron said still out of breath, as he held his ribs.
“It’s not funny, Ron, this is a good book and I’m glad Harry is being responsible about… stuff like that” Hermione turned to look at Harry, ignoring Ron for the time being.
“Uh thanks Hermione” Harry’s face was beet red and he took his book back. “I think it was more Lupin being responsible for me.”
“I always felt that Hogwarts could use a sexual education class, I mean it is a school after all. Maybe I should talk to Dumbledore about it. I mean there’s only so much you can learn on your own.” She said, musing about writing a letter or something to the headmaster.
“Wait… wait Hermione, don’t tell me you have this book too” Ron said suddenly becoming completely serious.
Hermione didn’t respond right away, but even though Harry wouldn’t have thought it possible, her face became even redder than before. Hermione opened her mouth to speak, closed it, seemed to give a bit of thought to something, and then opened it again.
“Well not that specific book, I don’t think that one would be much help to me, but I have other ones more general ones and ones specifically written for young witches.” Her voice was barely above a whisper and but didn’t lack the normal analytical way in which she usually spoke when talking about books.
“Geez Hermione, I didn’t realize you were so… interested in sex” Ron said lowering his voice at the last part, apparently considering some stuff in his head while looking at Hermione.
“I’m not… I mean I just want to be prepared for when I’m married” she said, “and would you keep it down, I don’t want anyone to think I’m a pervert or something. But anyway Harry, I think it is good you are educating yourself when it comes to stuff like that.”
“Well thanks Hermione, that means a lot… I think” Harry said, just trying to remain as unnoticed as possible, and hoping she wouldn’t call for him to teach the DA equivalent of sex ed or something like that.
“Wait a minute, you’re not going to have sex until you’re married Hermione?!?!” Ron almost yelled it, and almost everyone in the common room turned to look at them again.
“Ugh Ron you unbelievable jerk!!!” She tossed the book at him and stormed out of the room.
It was late anyway so the two boys decided to call it a night and go up to their dorm room. Harry made sure to grab his book off the table, considering Lupin had been kind enough to write Harry’s name in it, inside the front cover. Seamus, Dean, and Neville were already in the room going about their business, Neville was watering his plants, Dean was lying in his bed reading a book, and Seamus was flipping through a magazine, which looked to be questionable in nature.
“It’s a shame about ‘Mione though. I knew she was a prude, but I thought she might lighten up at some point” He said, as he stripped his shirt off getting ready to change into his night clothes. “I mean she’s real pretty, she’s going to give some guy a wicked case of blue balls one day.”
“Uh yea… I guess.” Harry didn’t know how to respond to that, he never really looked at Hermione that way but, even to him, the sexual tension between Ron and Hermione was almost visible. “Well maybe you should apologize to her tomorrow Ron. She’s just a bit old fashioned after all.”
“Old fashioned ya say? Too bad, she has a bloody nice arse. I’d love to give it a good spank.” They heard Seamus call from his bed at the far side of the room.
“You do know we’re talking about Hermione, right?” Harry said, turning to look at their roommate.
“Granger, right? Bushy brown hair, alright tits, arse made to be spanked though, I know the one.” Seamus responded, but did not look up from his magazine.
“Hey show some respect man, that’s my uh… friend you’re talking about.” Ron said, balling his hand into a fist. “Unless you want me to belt you one, that is.”
“Oi suddenly you wanna be a big man, whatever. I was just saying. I didn’t mean anything by it.” He said, raising his hands in mock surrender. “I didn’t realize you two were an item.”
“We’re… we’re not. We’re just friends but still…” some of the conviction drained from his voice and this time it was his turn to blush.
“Just watch it Seamus. If you aren’t going to show respect to all women, at least show it to the ones we know personally.” Harry said, just trying to smooth the whole thing over.
“Fine, Fine, if you two are going to gang up on me then.” Seamus went back to reading his magazine quietly.
They both dressed in silence and lay in their respective beds. Harry had brought his book with him and was now flipping through the pages Lupin had bookmarked. Some of the stuff in it, he wasn’t sure why they would bother writing it in a book. Most chapters were horribly titled, ones such as, Polishing Your Wand: The Pros and Cons of Masturbation and The Forbidden Forest: A Young Wizards Guide to Pubic Hair Management, the latter made Harry cringe visibly causing Ron, who was looking through a Quidditch magazine, to glance over at him. Harry turned to a page with a conspicuously sticking out orange self adhesive note. The page was the beginning of one of the later chapters and was titled Contraceptive Spells: Practical Spells for Every Young Wizard to Know. Harry took a look at the note and on it, in Lupin’s meticulous handwriting, “ALWAYS PRACTICE SAFE SEX HARRY” was written in bold red letters.
“How’s the book then?” Ron said without looking up from his magazine.
“Um…very informative.” Ron’s voice had startled him, causing him to close the book with a soft thud.
“Give us another look then… sorry about giving you a hard time earlier” Ron’s voice betrayed his obvious curiosity about the subject at hand.
“Uh sure Ron, just a sec,” Harry tore off the note and crumpled it up, before handing the book over to Ron.
Ron flipped through the pages, grimacing at some things but intently reading some other stuff, even going so far as to flip back and read over some sections a second time.
“This book has bloody awful chapter titles, nice to know the author was consistent though.” He said, although he was still looking at the book. “’Contraceptive Charms’, maybe Hermione was right. This does seem like stuff that would be good for them to teach us. I mean wouldn’t want to mess one of these up.”
“They’re not that hard.” A voice called from across the room.
Harry looked across to confirm what he had initially thought and was right that it had been Dean Thomas who spoke; he, along with Neville, had remained quiet almost the entire time that the rest of them were talking. Apparently he hadn’t thought about what he was saying until the words had left his mouth, because he looked over at Ron whose face was almost the same color as his hair. Dean obviously hadn’t realized the implications of what he was saying, and to whom, before and was now looking away from Ron.
“And how do you know that Dean?” Ron asked through clenched teeth.
“I know that because my mum bought me that same book about a year ago, thought she was just yanking my chain at the time, but there is some good stuff in there.” Dean said, trying to explain himself before Ron, who was obviously livid tried to kill him. “I haven’t… um… used the spell in real life applications.”
“Dean I swear to…” Ron started, but Seamus interrupted him.
“You really don’t have to worry about it Ron, everyone knows Ginny doesn’t go that far, why do you think she goes through boyfriends so quickly.” Seamus snorted in response. “A man can only just snog for so long. Isn’t that right Dean?”
“Oi don’t talk about my sister like that!!!” Ron said, sitting up in bed.
“What?! I was just saying she’s a tease, Ron, not like she is a slag or anything,” Seamus sat up too.
They were yelling at each other from across the room now, and everyone else was quiet as the insults got louder and more personal. Harry, Dean, and Neville just looked back and forth as if watching a tennis match. Eventually the yelling died down as they both realized how stupid the argument had become, and could barely remember the cause of the fight in the first place. Everyone just looked around the room as it became quiet. Dean was the first to break the silence amongst them.
“But seriously, I was only practicing the spell because the book suggested it. I mean it makes sense any other spell you practice, or you might singe your eyebrows off. This one you could get a girl preggers or worse, catch something, if you don’t make sure you know what you’re doing.”
Everyone in the room looked at Dean, and murmured their acceptance of his reasoning; after all it did make sense.
Earlier that night Luna had been in her room with her long time friend Ginny, her roommates were still down in the common room, which in Ravenclaw was essentially one big study hall. She had never been really close with her roommates, but they were cordial enough with each other, closer to acquaintances than friends really. Luna had taken the clothes out of her trunk where she had kept them since getting them for her birthday. The outfit in question consisted of a top that was an awfully pretty shade bluish purple, but was a bit too low cut for Luna’s tastes, her breasts weren’t exactly popping out but they were definitely more on display than she liked. As far as the skirt she was holding up, it was much too short for Luna, she preferred her legs as covered as possible which is why she usually wore the Hogwarts’ school skirt at its unaltered length which fell a little bit above the knee. This skirt however fell well above that.
“Wow Luna never knew you had clothes like that. Where’d you get them?” Ginny asked from her position sitting on the edge of Luna’s bed.
“They were a gift from my Auntie Em. I haven’t had the chance to wear them yet, and thought I might wear them to Hogsmeade this weekend.” She responded, holding the shirt up in front of her.
“Well it is definitely the weather for it; you might not get another chance for a while. It’ll start getting colder soon.” Ginny said. “I didn’t know you had an Aunt Emma.”
“Well she isn’t my actual aunt she was close friends with my mother, and her name isn’t Emma. It’s Christina.” Luna said flatly, “it is a reference to the Wizard of Oz.”
“What? Does she live in Kansas or something?” Ginny asked confused.
“No she lives in London, but a house fell on her once.” Luna was stripping now, getting ready to try on the clothes.
Ginny had decided not to press the issue of her Aunt any further, and was not at all surprised by Luna’s sudden stripping. She had seen Luna naked a few times before, when they were changing for dances they often did it together. Ginny could never understand why Luna insisted on wearing such baggy clothing most of the time. She was sure that if any guy could see what she was seeing they would be drooling. Luna’s body was pale all over, she had a freckle or two here and there but otherwise she was absolutely blemish free. Luna’s breasts were only slightly bigger than average and not as large as her own but they looked splendid on Luna’s petite frame. Luna’s stomach was completely flat, which made Ginny wonder where she was storing all that pudding she ate. Ginny realized that she was staring a bit and looked away. She was by no means a lesbian but that didn’t mean she didn’t appreciate the feminine form. Luna had the top and skirt on a few seconds after that and looked amazing in Ginny’s opinion.
“Geez Luna who are you try to bed with that?” Ginny said poking fun at the girl, not expecting a real reaction. She had long since realized that sometimes Luna did things randomly and without reason. So when Luna blushed slightly and looked away, Ginny was stunned.
“Holy shit, you really are trying to impress someone, who is it. Spill it Luna, I need every lurid detail.” Ginny had pulled Luna onto her bed next to her.
“There aren’t any lurid details really. I mean we kissed but that was it. I don’t think I am even going to wear this, it looks silly.” She said getting up to change, but Ginny pulled her back down.
“You absolutely have to wear that, Luna. What do you mean you kissed? When did this happen? Was it good?” Ginny asked. Ginny was full of questions and Luna could feel herself becoming more embarrassed, a fact Ginny picked up on. “Looks like I finally found a chink in the old Lovegood armor.”
“I… We… last Sunday.” She sighed in defeat. “I don’t know, I mean I enjoyed it but I sort of kissed him without his permission. What if he hates me?”
“I’m sure he doesn’t hate you Luna. Just walk me through what happened.” Ginny said, not really expecting Luna take it as literally as she did.
Luna reenacted the entire event meticulously, she was careful to leave out any detail that would reveal it was Harry though. Then she got up to the part where they kissed. Luna was sitting on the bed next to Ginny, who had been acting as the stand in Harry, she stood her up and much like she did Harry she planted her soft, wet lips against the redhead’s. Ginny’s initial reaction was one of shock, she had definitely not been expecting Luna to do that, but the experience wasn’t an altogether horrible one. In fact, Ginny found herself a bit disappointed when Luna broke the kiss.
“Wow… you kissed him like that?” Ginny breathed, a bit flustered.
“Yes, I think that was more or less what happened.” Luna said, almost more to herself. She had viewed the entire thing as a demonstration, and her mind was still firmly on Harry, and their date, at the moment.
“Luna there is no way he could hate you after a kiss like that. In fact, I’m surprised he didn’t try to shag you right there in the library.” Ginny said.
“Well I sort of ran away after that. I wasn’t sure how he would respond, and I got a bit scared.” Luna said, that part did embarrass her a little.
“What? So you don’t know how he feels?” Ginny was surprised by the admission, and also by the lingering tingling between her legs.
“Well he told me he thought I was a good kisser yesterday, and he said that we should talk about it again later.” Luna was standing in front of the mirror, checking her body out, her back facing Ginny.
“Well I know he definitely enjoyed THAT kiss” she couldn’t help add, ‘god she has soft lips’ in her head as she squeezed her thighs together reflexively.
Luna felt better after hearing what Ginny had to say, she also caught the way Ginny was shifting uncomfortably on her bed. She smiled slightly at her own reflection, taking a little pride in her self at the fact she was able to illicit that kind of reaction from Ginny. After all Luna had always found Ginny to be a very pretty girl and she knew she had a bit of experience in this field. Luna wasn’t sure if her attraction to Ginny, and a few other girls, qualified her as bisexual but she wasn’t too concerned about it, she supposed she was just a highly sexual person. It was just the having a date with her crush aspect that she didn’t feel so comfortable with.
“I don’t think I should wear this.” Luna sighed, the brief bit of self confidence she had garnered from Ginny’s reaction to their kiss had quickly faded away.
“Geez, I kind of wished you were a bit more girly sometimes but I take it back.” Ginny had calmed down substantially, “I’ve seen some of the stuff you’ve worn, and this is by far the prettiest, not to mention the most normal.”
“There’s something wrong with the way I dress?” Luna asked tilting her head to the side quizzically.
She was stripping them off now, she wasn’t sure if she was going to wear them but she didn’t want to get them dirty in the meantime. It was getting late and Luna’s roommates would be back soon, which normally wouldn’t be a problem, but Luna needed some alone time in the worse way. Her day had been filled with thoughts of Harry, and what they might get up to if they were to become a couple. She had had a particularly vivid fantasy in Potions that morning of Harry bursting into the classroom and dragging her off caveman style and having his way with her in the nearest empty room. She still shivered when the thought ran through her head.
Ginny stood up and made her way over to the door, followed closely behind by Luna who still stood in only panties. Ginny stopped her at the doorway to her room.
“I think you better stay here in your state.” Ginny remarked, “I can show myself out.”
“Oh, good idea.” Luna said looking down and realizing that she was still half naked. “Good night Ginny.”
“What, no good night kiss for your best friend?” Ginny said, in a mocking tone.
Luna was already feeling a little hot, and she could hear the small trace of dare in Ginny’s voice, and figured she might not get another chance. She looked Ginny in the eyes, and placed her hands on either of her cheeks experimentally. She stood on her toes to reach the slightly taller girl, and pressed her lips to her friend’s for the second time that night. This kiss was much deeper, and Ginny found herself kissing Luna back this time, her hands were still at her sides though. Luna gave Ginny’s lower lip a slight nibble with her teeth before completely breaking the kiss.
“Good night Ginny,” Luna said, in her normal dreamy way, before closing the door.
