-Chapter One-
Walking into the police precinct with a large travel mug filled with steaming hot coffee, Nick Burkhardt- the Grimm of Portland-stalked towards his desk wishing the day was already over.
It wasn't that he wasn't ready for work, no, it was rather the fact that he had been out until about three in the morning being hunted down by Eddie since it was his 'time of the month' where all he wanted to do was fuck his mate. He was lucky he could even walk after the marathon they had went through the night before.
Dropping into his chair, he hissed as a sharp pain shot up his back. Adjusting his seat slightly, Nick reached out and grabbed one of the files sitting on his desk. He had barely picked it up when Captain Renard called for him.
Dropping the file, he stood up and moved towards the Captain's office to see what he needed.
“What's up?” Nick asked, closing the door after he walked into the room.
“I just received a call from a family in Surrey, England. They returned home about a week ago after being here for vacation.”
“What did they need to call us for then?” Nick asked, with a raised eyebrow.
“Well apparently they were so excited to return home that they, and I quote, 'missed the fact that their small, quiet nephew didn't get on the airplane with them'.”
“Are you serious? They left their nephew here? How old is this nephew?”
“He's five years old.” Captain Renard said, holding out a photo. “This is the most recent picture that was taken by his babysitter about a month ago.”
Looking at the picture, Nick felt his heart go out to the lost child. His emerald green eyes shined with a light that seemed ethereal and the wide smile that proudly showed off a missing tooth made him all the more endearing. He had a small oddly shaped scar, almost like a lightning bolt, on his forehead and his head was topped with messy black hair.
“Is anything being done about this family? There is no way they could have missed a child for a week.”
“I've informed the officials of their local police, but I don't know what they'll do about the obvious neglect.” Captain Renard said with a frown.
“You know that Hank is out because he's sick right? You still want me to work this one?”
“I think you can handle this case on your own. If you can't I'll see about getting you some help.”
Nodding, Nick said, “Alright. I'll go and get started and I'll let you know if I need any help.”
Heading to his desk, Nick picked up his car keys and double checked that his gun was secured in the holster before he headed out with the file held in his hands. As he stood in the elevator, waiting for it to reach the bottom floor, he flipped open the file to see where they had been staying; River Place Hotel.
Walking out of the elevator, he pulled out his cell phone and dialed Eddie's number. It rang about five times before a gruff, tired voice answered.
“Tired are you?” Nick teased with a grin.
“Yes. Why are you even out of bed? I didn't give you permission to leave. I wasn't done with you yet.”
“I had work. Listen I was just calling to tell you I'll probably be late tonight because I caught a case.”
“Is it bad?” Monroe asked.
“Missing child. His damn family didn't realize he wasn't with them for a week.”
“Damn. Alright I understand. Just keep me informed about what's going on so I know you haven't gotten yourself hurt or killed understand?”
“Got it. I'll let you know what's going on later tonight.”
After hanging up, Nick started the car and quickly drove to the hotel. As he drove up the drive, right near the Willamette River, Nick kept an eye out for any suspicious people standing around. You never knew when there would be someone waiting to snatch a child from people staying in a hotel.
Climbing out of his car, Nick made his way into the grand building and up to the desk.
The blonde woman that was standing there smiled and said, “Hello sir, welcome to the River Place Hotel. How can I help you today?”
“I'm Detective Nick Burkhardt with the Portland PD. I'm looking for information on a family that recently stayed here; The Dursley's. They had two small children with them when they were here.”
“Oh yes I remember them. Horrible people. They liked to talk about everyone behind their backs and only ever took their larger child with them. Left the little one here except for the day they checked out. I can't tell you much, but I do know that they left a ragged backpack filled with dirty, ripped clothes in their room. If I remember right the little child had carried it in when they got here.”
“I'm going to have to take that bag from you.” Nick said.
“Alright follow me. The manager has it in her office. She's out, but I'm in charge while she's gone so I can give it to you.” She said, stepping out from behind the desk and leading Nick towards a door to the right of the desk. “Tell me, is the child okay? Is he hurt? I thought they weren't treating him right because of how only his clothes looked so old and too big for him and I swear I saw bruises on him, but when I told my boyfriend about it he said that proved nothing and that it was just my maternal instincts kicking in because I recently miscarried and lost my baby.” She said, tearing up.
“I'm sorry.” Nick said as she pulled a key out of her pocket and unlocked the door.
“It's okay. It was just my body telling me I wasn't ready to be a mother yet.” She said, clearing her throat. Walking over to the closet behind the desk, she pulled open the door then carefully took out a battered old school book bag that looked like it should have been tossed out years ago.
“Thanks.” Nick said, taking the bag. “I may be back depending on if I need anything else, but I don't think I will.”
Heading back out, Nick climbed into his car and unzipped the book bag. Reaching in, he pulled out an old, ragged, faded blue blanket that had 'HJP' sewn into it followed by a pair of large, ripped up pants and a large dingy t-shirt that had once been white. Setting them on the seat next to him, he reached into the bag, but quickly gave up when he found nothing else inside the bag.
Shoving the things back in the bag, Nick jogged back into the hotel and up to the woman from before. “One last question before I leave; what was the child wearing when he left?”
“Poor thing had on a threadbare shirt and pants that had holes in them. I offered to get a coat for him since it was so cold outside but those horrible people said he screamed and cried if you tried to put a coat on him so they didn't even try anymore.”
Sighing, Nick said thank you and made his way back to his car. Pulling out his phone he dialed Monroe's number and waited for him to answer it.
It was answered shortly after the third ring with a growled out, “What now?”
“I need your help. I know you said you can't and won't while mating season is going on, but the child I told you about is in real trouble. The last time he was seen he was wearing threadbare clothes, no coat and it's supposed to start snowing later tonight. We need to find him before it's too late...if it isn't already too late.”
“Alright. Where do you want me to meet you?”
Flipping open the file, Nick scanned it before saying, “The file says that his family think the last time they remember him being with them was while they were at Sandy River Delta Park on the hiking trails before they headed over to the Portland-Troutdale Airport to head home...which is a lie since PTA doesn't offer flights like that. Plus there is no way that that family would have been on hiking trails.”
“How can you tell that?” Monroe asked.
“I'll show you the picture of the family when I meet up with you.” Nick said. “I'm heading over to the park meet me there as soon as you can okay?”
“Sure. Give me a half hour and I'll be there.”
“Thanks. I'll see you there.”
Hanging up, Nick tossed the phone and file onto the passenger seat then started the car and headed out towards his destination.
****END CHAPTER****
Hey all I am SO sorry about the wait, but real life took a hectic ride the past week. My friend ended up in the hospital and I had one day off of work in the past week so I didn't have a lot of time to write. I'm working on the next chapter as soon as I put this one up though, so the wait shouldn't be that long for the next one. Maybe only a few days. Sorry again and I hope you liked this chapter.
