Hermione was listening to the woods as she walked along the forest floor bare foot so she could feel the pulse of life beneath her feet. Something had changed something she couldn’t yet fully understand, the voice in the wind seem to be clear but at the same time so distant she couldn’t make it out.
So much had changed these last seven years since that day she had received her Hogwarts letter. She remembered the big brown owl that day as it swooped down to her where she sat under her oak when she was eleven.
~~~~~~~ FLASHBACK ~~~~~~~
She stroked the owls soft tan chest feathers and looked into his big brown eyes feeling his heart beat like it was her own. She noticed a white envelope attached to the birds sharp clawed leg, “Now what’s that attached to your leg? Have you brought me a letter mister owl, well come now.. let me see who it’s from!”
The large bird ducked its head as if he understood her perfectly and turned to stick out its leg for her to untie the ribbon holding the letter in place. She held it in her hands, running her finger around the larger red seal on the back of the letter. Hermione flipped the letter over and saw it had her name written across the front in the most elegant script, she turned it over again and carefully pulled the seal back to open it and began to read.
Headmaster: Albus Dumbledore
(Order of Merlin, First Class, Grand Sorcerer, Chief Warlock,
Supreme Mugwump, International Confederation of Wizards)
Dear Miss Hermione Granger,
We are very pleased to inform you that you have been accepted into this year’s term of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. You will find a list enclosed with all of the required school supplies you will need for the following year at school.
The beginning of term is September 1st. I will be by around one this afternoon to help explain and answer all of the questions I’m sure you and your parents have.
Yours sincerely,
Minerva McGonagall,
Deputy Headmistress
Hermione was so excited, she could not believe what she had just read and so she read it over and over again. The large barn owl hooted next to her shacking her out of her shock, she started to giggle and suddenly shot up grabbing hold of her book waving goodbye and yelling thank you over her shoulder to the owl. He hooted in response and spread his large wings and with a great flap took off into the sky out of sight.
She ran as fast as she could down the hill where she hit the gravel drive and went in the direction of the gardens where she knew her parents had set up their lunch on the warm summer day. As she ran it was like the wind pushed her along caressing her checks and ruffling her curls whispering in her ear, Hermione almost felt like it was saying how happy it was for her and it made her giggle.
She ran along the drive then turned into the path for the gardens passing the sweet smelling rose bushes her mother tended and keep so beautiful. Hermione would help her mother with the gardens having a very green thumb, often bringing many plants back that her mother and their grounds keeper Thomas had given up on. He often said in his low Welsh accent that “Whatever ye’ touch my little lass, seems ta spring ta life hap’y and healthy as could be!”
By the time Hermione had found her parents in the back of the gardens sitting around the small white iron table she was so out of breath she couldn’t form proper words.
Her mother and father laughed lightly at their daughter, “Sweetie catch your breath you look like you could faint heaving the way you are!” Jane Granger said to her daughter with a smile on her face.
“Dove what is that there in your hand, it looks like a letter.” Her father asked her as he nodded toward her hand while he took a sip of his tea.
“I’m a Witch Daddy! Mommy look, see what the owl brought me, I’ve been accepted to Hogwarts, I’m a witch, how come you never told me, Mommy are you a witch and is Daddy a wizard!?” Hermione said with excited breath so quickly her parents could hardly understand.
“Little Dove,” her father said motioning her towards him while he set his tea cup down, “what is this you’re saying about being a witch let me see this letter of yours darling.” She skipped over to her father and sat in his lap and handed him the letter. He started to read over it as her mother got up and read over his shoulder, his eyebrows knitted together in confusion and disbelief.
That was when she decided to pop into the Granger family’s garden; Minerva McGonagall was an imposing figure with her large maroon pointed hat sitting on top of her head and the long matching cloak that she wore. Lord Granger got up out of his chair to place himself between his family and this stranger that came from thin air demanding to know who she was. McGonagall smiled at the family and looked at the beautiful curly haired girl peeking out from behind her father.
“My name is Professor Minerva McGonagall and I teach at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I can assure you I mean your family no harm I am here to answer all of the question you have, and plan getting Hermione to the Express.” She went on to answer all of the family’s concerns and worries, and the biggest question of all; how could their daughter be a witch? They were both normal how could their daughter have magic?! McGonagall said they were “muggles” and it was something that couldn’t be explained it just happens.
The family sat with the professor for a couple hours just talking, Hermione squirmed in her seat with the excitement that she was feeling. Finally after all the questions were answered and all of the worried parents concerns soothed the professor looked down at the beautiful little girl and asked, “Well Miss Granger what do you think, would you like to come to our school and learn magic and find out who you were born to be?”
Hermione sat for a moment and thought everything over, this was her home where she grew up, and she would be leaving to go to a new place that was far away from everything she loved. Going away from her parents, and away from her library and the woods; the orchards the hills and the gardens everything she had ever known. This was her home could she really just leave it to go off to a place where she would be all alone?
Then the wind rushed around her whisking her curls up and brushing against her cheek caressing her soft skin, that’s when she know she’d never really be alone because the wind and the earth would always be with her. They were her gifts from the mother and she knew then that she could do this; she knew that this was where she was supposed to go that this was her path.
“Professor McGonagall, when can we go shopping?” she asked with a smile and all the adults laughed lightly. With that McGonagall took her leave and left the family to the rest of their day, her parents went into the house as Hermione ran in the direction of the woods. She ran to the edge of the forest and stopped to slip off her shoes and continued on further into the woods lightly touching the trees as she passed, the vibration of their life shooting through her small hand.
She had come to a clearing somewhere in the middle of the forest and walked along the soft grass and came to kneel in front of the large tree that stood in the middle tall and imposing. She looked up into the canopy and inhaled deeply all the smells of the forest imprinting them on her memory she opened her eyes and spoke to the woods.
“Mother are you there, it’s me.. I found out I am a witch today, can you believe it! I’m going to be going to Scotland to learn magic! I’m so excited, I’ll be sad to leave home but just think of all that I’ll be able to learn!” Hermione laid down in the grass resting her hand on one of the roots of the tree enjoying the vibration passing from the tree into her body.
“It’s going to be wonderful I just know it! Thank you for my blessing Mother.” She said as she just relaxed into the ground and listened enjoying the feeling of her home.
~~~~~~~~END FLASHBACK~~~~~~~~
The smells in the Forbidden forest were different than the smells in the woods behind her home. The feeling of this forest was different also it was older, darker more ominous; but Hermione always felt welcome here like the forest would never let anything happen to her. She stopped at a tree sliding down and sat against it enjoying the relaxing vibrations against her back, tomorrow was her 17th birthday. Another birthday spent at Hogwarts with her closest friends but this one was going to be different she just didn’t know it yet.
Voldemort was still out there gathering followers, killing people for his own enjoyment. He was a monster and she was going to do anything she could to help Harry destroy him! She looked up into the sky you could barely make it out through the dense tree tops, “The sun has set, it must be dinner time.” she thought to herself. Her friends would start to worry about her if she didn’t show up for dinner, Hermione sighed deeply she loved her friends she truly did but sometimes they were so clingy.
Out here in the woods she could breathe, she had space to just feel the earth around her and be alone and at peace. Her friends always thought she was in the library and half of the time she was and the other half she would be here, in the silence of the forest. They didn’t know she would come out here, no one did and that was just how Hermione liked it, this was her place this was where she felt safe.
She sighed one last time as she hoisted herself up from the cool grass that caressed her tan legs. “Time to go back to reality”, she thought to herself throwing her cloak back around her shoulders she started making her way back slowly to the castle. She stopped at the edge of the forest looking up at the twinkling stars and looking back at the soft glow that came from the windows of the castle. The wind brushed against her face and she smiled, “Goodnight Mother, I will come to sit with you again tomorrow.”
Hermione never really knew who she was talking too; it was just a habit she had continued since she was a child. She supposed it had something to do with the stories her father told her of the Mother Earth that gifted them with all they had. She started on her journey back up to the castle again as the wind swirled around her; laughing to herself she shook her head.
“I must be going crazy,” she thought, because she could’ve sworn she heard it whisper back, “Goodnight my daughter.”
