Chapter 1 – Method Acting
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Draco sat in the Hospital wing of Hogwarts staring down at the sleeping curly haired girl that lay in the tiny cot the infirmary offered its patients. Her skin was pale Draco noticed, much paler that he had seen it before. Her face usually had a tanned glow to it, but he supposed under the current news the paling would indicate the obvious stress she felt. Though he couldn’t understand the dramatics of passing out over it, drama queen he mused. He looked away from Hermione back to his perfectly shaped nails; he studied them for a moment lost in thought.
Today had not gone as he would have liked it to; he had been less than impressed to learn at breakfast that he had been enrolled in Muggle studies. He hated muggles, they were useless inferior creatures and therefore he had to reason that he saw fit to ‘study’ them.
The day hadn’t got any better from there; he had Pansy bloody Parkinson clinging to him as if she were attached to his hip, parading around staking her claim on him, he shuddered at the thought. The girl just couldn’t get her small head around the fact that they were nothing, there was no us with them and that she meant nothing to him. Draco couldn’t make it any clearer to the bint unless he rammed it down her bloody throat, but he knew that it wasn’t a very dignified thing to do and it especially wasn’t a very Malfoy thing to do.
His parents had always expected him to marry Pansy, though they were not betrothed, thank Merlin. Both set of parents had clearly told them what they had expected, whilst Pansy was clearly delighted, Draco would rather kill himself than be tethered to her, he couldn’t think of anything worse than that notion.
Pansy was not at all what he wanted in a wife; for starters he wanted a woman who had not slept with the entirety of the male student body. That was just cheap, he mused. Pansy in some sense Draco thought, despite her pure blood status, was nothing but a high class hooker, she essentially sold herself. She was a money grabbing, fame hungry, society climbing slag. And he hated her for it, she would bleed him dry, and he wasn’t going to let that happen, no matter what his parents wanted.
Of course just because he didn’t want to marry her, didn’t mean that he could use her as an ends to a mean, he was a teenage male for Merlin’s sake, he had needs, particularly sexual needs and he had to admit that Pansy was not only easy on the eyes, but she was good at what she did, the obvious practice having aided her skills.
Despite Pansy clinging to him, he managed to shake her free in Muggle studies, he had space free from her grabbing hands and prying eyes. He felt much more at ease sat next to Blaise Zabini, his best friend. Having sat at a table only capable of seating two students he was relieved to see that Pansy had to if not reluctantly relocate elsewhere, leaving him to enjoy the train wreck of a lesson that he expected muggle studies to be. He was pleasantly surprised and slightly disappointed however when the class was actually interesting, of course it would be interesting since they were studying Shakespeare. Draco thought that Shakespeare was the only redeeming quality muggles had, the man was a genius with words, and although Draco loathed to admit it, he loved his work, particularly Romeo and Juliet.
Draco stared back at Hermione, her eyelashes flickering ever so softly as her dreams played out behind her closed eyelids. Draco found himself wondering what she was dreaming about. He studied her relaxed sleeping face and for once he was able to appreciate her beauty, without any repercussions. Draco wasn’t blind; he knew that Hermione was beautiful, as did the rest of the male students at Hogwarts. However Hermione’s beauty was different to that of the other girls ‘beauty’. Hermione was innocently beautiful; she didn’t know how beautiful she was. Draco knew that if she put her mind to it, she could be stunning. Like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. Not that Hermione Granger was a caterpillar. He almost laughed to himself at that thought. However if such a transformation ever came, she wouldn’t know what hit her, she’d receive more attention that even the-boy-who-just-wouldn’t-bloody-die.
When Hermione had first entered the wizarding world seven years ago, Draco knew that she was cute, so very innocent in everything she did and said, and yet now she had grown up into the most exquisite girl Draco had ever seen. Draco frowned to himself, as exquisite as he thought she was there were two things that irritated him about her; her blood, and that none stop mouth of hers. Well really it was only the fact of her blood that he detested, though he was willing to try and see past it, for the sake of the school obviously. The other fact he could overlook, however it was a fact that others couldn’t.
Many of the male students often forgot about Hermione being easy on the eyes, hell in all honesty many forgot that she was a girl. Her intelligence was intimidating to say the very least, she knew more than many pureblood elders, which not only made her very knowledgeable, but it also made her very powerful, and indeed she was. He had seen her power with his very own eyes, on the bloody battle field that Hogwarts had once been. He shuddered involuntarily at the gruesome and somewhat scary recollection. If he were to be honest though, Draco actually respected Hermione’s intelligence.
Draco by no means liked Hermione Granger, but he often thought that if she could just get past all the hostile feelings she harboured for him, he was sure that the two of them would get along well. Headmistress McGonagall obviously concurred with this belief as she had elected them both to be head girl and boy, a role he knew she had coveted all these years, a role that he was also proud to fulfil, not that his father showed any emotion towards the prestigious award. But when did he ever, Draco thought bitterly.
Draco hoped that perhaps the sudden introduction of their parts in Romeo and Juliet, could allow them an excuse to get to know each other, maybe even help to breakdown the seven years’ worth of barriers that blocked them off from each other. It was only fair right? He was to live with Hermione for the next few months, so it would help him right? To try and get to know her, he told himself.
Draco sighed at the thought, he knew he was hoping for too much, the damage had already been done, and it was way too much for him to rectify now. They had only been back at Hogwarts for one day and already the Head girl had expressed her ill wishes towards him. The sad thing was, and Draco knew it, was that he was saying things purely for the reason to get back at her. He didn’t actually mean the things he said; well he had meant the comment prior to the muggle studies class, he did think she would be an amazing fuck. Even so, whenever he spoke to her, he was usually replying in her likeness, or his perceived usual charming self, or so people thought.
Either way he had conflicting emotions at the task at hand. He adore Shakespeare, particularly Romeo and Juliet, he thought that the new professor, had chosen the cast exceedingly well. He was the obvious choice for Romeo, in some ways Draco often wondered if Shakespeare had based the characterisation of Romeo on him. Just like Romeo, he was born to an influential aristocratic family; you couldn’t get any more aristocratic than Lord and Lady Malfoy.
Just like Romeo, Draco thought himself to be handsome, intelligent, and sensitive. What was more was that Draco also considered himself to be impulsive and immature at time, times when the Malfoy training would slip, and he was able to be himself. Though this side only ever came out when he was with Blaise. However unlike Romeo, his idealism and passion excluded him from people, whereas Romeo’s passions make him likeable, Draco knew that he was hated by many. And yet no one knew what his passions were, no one simply took the time to ask him. However despite being the son and heir to the most hated and powerful wizarding family he was not at all interested in violence, despite having lived through the entirety of a violent feud dictated by blood. Yes Draco definitely thought that it was poetic irony that he was to play the character with which he shared so much in common with.
Draco had actually scoffed when he heard Pansy exclaim that she was the perfect person to portray Juliet. He’d been relieved when Professor Monroe had announced that Gryffindor were to play the part of the Capulets. He had actually with hailed a breath that he wasn’t aware he had been holding at that point. He had known in that moment who his Juliet was to be, because Draco knew that if he were to have chosen the leading lady, he would have chosen her himself.
To him Hermione Rose Granger was the perfect embodiment of Juliet. Juliet was a naïve child who thought little about love and marriage. Draco knew that it was common knowledge that Hermione never gave relationships a second thought, hell she never gave them a first thought, she was always so preoccupied with her studies to bother. And even with all the knowledge she possessed she still managed to be naive, it was charming, Draco noted to himself, to watch her get flustered. Juliet as a character showed amazing courage in trusting her entire life and future to Romeo, and although Draco found it amusing at the notion of the Gryffindor princess trusting him, he knew that the Gryffindor traits were Bravery and courage, and as the poster girl for her house, of course she would have these traits. On top of that she was angelic and probably the most virtuous girl he had ever met.
All these things that Hermione possessed triumphed over Pansy Parkinson’s slag-like ways.
The irony wasn’t lost on Draco that he saw himself to be so much like Romeo, and that he saw Hermione to be Juliet. He also never overlooked the point that the two characters were star crossed lovers. He did however deny the possibility of the story actually acting itself out in their world, besides the play.
Though if Draco were to disclose it, Hermione Granger was everything he desired in a wife, just as Romeo did with Juliet.
Draco looked back down at Hermione’s face, only for his steely blue eyes to come into contact with her warm amber ones.
“Thou art not conquer'd; beauty's ensign yet, is crimson in thy lips and in thy cheeks.” Draco said softly, his eyes never once leaving Hermione’s.
She stuttered momentarily at the memorized line, a line that came from the final scene in which Romeo takes his life. She knew that scene well, she always cried no matter if she was reading, or watching it being performed on stage, it always broke her heart. She was still flummoxed that out of everything Draco Malfoy could possibly say to her in that moment it was a line, dedicated to Juliet’s beauty.
“Here's to my love!” he said finally, and then he was gone. She watched as he elegantly strode out of the double doors in awe, she didn’t even try to stop him.
A/N: I know this is a short one, but I wanted to give our Romeo his own little chapter before we get into it all, so what did you think?
I am so humbled by the responses from the prologue, you are all amazing, and I love you all for reviewing, please let me know what you think to this little snippet.
Hardygirl133: I adore Romeo and Juliet, It struck me when I was working with an English class and the students that I was assisting were studying it. Needless to say they got confused so I used the pair to explain it, and amazingly the girl understood.
Guiltypleasure: I intend to have some laugh out loud moments, if you think of anything you would like to see in the story, then please let me know.
Saphirephoenix: There will be lots of mischief, I’m looking forward to it.
LadyOfTheNight: I hope the problem was rectified for you, thank you for bringing it to my attention, for some unknown reason, it decided not to upload that part. I will try to update soon.
