There, he finds a refuge in a surprising place. There he receives an offer that he simply can't refuse. But when Dumbledore tells him that this is the dark lord attempting to manipulate and control him, will he ignore the comforting lullaby of the darkness that holds him, or will he delve deeper for the answers he never wanted to face?

The light danced on the edge of his reality. It toyed with him, taunting him with its threatening motions as if it longed to rush in and incinerate him. He watched it with wild, feral brilliant green eyes, sitting with his knees drawn up to his chest. His arms were littered in wounds, bruises and marks; some were old, some were new. His hair had grown longer, his bangs falling to his chin now and hiding most of his face from view. The back of his hair reached his shoulders, brushing them in a tickle of sensation that his numb skin couldn't feel anymore. It had soothed him once, but it didn't now.
Nothing soothed him now, except the darkness.
While it pulsed around him to a lullaby that comforted him, the presence that he knew now as Voldemort was gone. His …sensation… was missing from his mind. Pale, diryt toes crossed over one another as Harry thought on the situation. When had the man who killed his parents began to comfort him? His visions and connection to the Dark Lord was always painful and full of the memory of their death. But here…here it wasn't. Why was that? And why offer this truce? There was nothing to be gained from it, on the Dark Lord's side. But it tempted him. It tempted him so badly that he wanted to cry out right then and beg to be rescued.
His body shook now, someone attempting to wake him with vigorous movements. Harry didn't move from his perusal of the light in his mind which was slowly growing far fainter than it had been before. He could dimly hear voices, and struggled to concentrate on them. The darkness amplified everything, making it echo and reverberate within his brain.
"-shouldn't have left him here!" Remus…his inner self felt tears filling his eyes and he wanted to reach out for comfort. God he was pathetic…such a sniveling freak who didn't deserve to live. But the voices had continued.
"This was the only safe-" Who was that…it sounded so familiar…
"Safe? You call this SAFE?"
"-didn't say it was, Lupin. That's just what he told us all." Snape…Professor Snape stood in his rooms. Oh, Merlin how he must be gloating at his treatment…at his condition.
There was silence for a moment and he could hear a soft sob from beside him, hands carding through his dirty hair. He could feel his body's aches and pains in agonizing relief now. It pulsed under his skin like a living, breathing entity. And he felt that he'd done everything to deserve every mark. There was nothing but shame that he simply hadn't…let them kill him.
A broken collarbone, fractured ribs and a shattered knee. Various cuts and bruises, swelling and other marks covered his flesh. His eyes were swollen shut, black and blue from bruising. Not that he wanted to open them. He wanted nothing more than to sink back into the darkness.
"We've got to get him out of here, Snape…this…this isn't human!"
"You think I don't know that? You think I like seeing him like this? Those filthy Muggles ought to be slaughtered for treating him like this!" Snape was defending him?
The world must be ending. Oh wait…it was.
"Dumbledore isn't going to simply let us walk out of here with him." A rustling sound that had him imagining the dark, snarky man running his hands through his greasy hair.
"I can't leave him…I-I failed him. I can't leave him, not like this, not ever!"
Oh god, Moony, don't let me hope…it hurts so much more than anything else when it crumbles. He thought, fighting the emotion that rose up in him like a tidal wave.
"If we take him, right now, where would we go?"
We? Who was we?
"…We have to make a decision, Lupin. Who's side are we on?"
There was no hesitation and he wanted to cry. In relief. In despair. He didn't know which was more appropriate to apply to the emotion in his chest.
"Harry's."
"I have a place we can stay. Highly warded. We can hide him there, and heal him…"
"I'm worried, Snape…he hasn't said a word."
"He's probably unconscious."
"No…I know he's awake…he just can't reach us yet. His breathing's different than when we came in and his pulse is a little faster."
There was absolute silence at Remus' proclamation. He could feel the heavy weight of the two men's stares on him, but he couldn't be bothered to open his swollen eyes or move a muscle. Let them do what they wanted. He'd had enough.
"Potter…" Was that …Snape's voice? Kind and rough with emotion that made the body sitting next to him move as if he were crying. "We're going to take you away from here. You don't have to move. You don't have to say anything. We're going to keep you safe."
"We're going to protect you, cub…like I should have been doing all along…" Remus' voice was choked and wet. Maybe he had been crying. "I'm sorry, Harry. I'm so sorry. I should've been here, I should've-"
"Lupin, we must go…the Muggles will be back soon. And Dumbledore might call us at anytime." Snape's voice was soft and close, as if he were kneeling beside the bed with Remus sitting on it. Why did he care? Why did either of them care? He'd killed Sirius. He'd killed his mum and dad. He'd killed people that these two men loved.
"I'm going to give you a potion, Potter. It's going to kill the pain and make it easier to transport you." Snape said, and he could dimly feel the lip of a bottle against his mouth.
The vile concoction poured into his mouth and he considered – for a moment – not swallowing it. It was so close, he could simply let the potion trickle out of his mouth and wallow in the pain he deserved. But the thought of Remus' face if he did that changed he thought and he weakly swallowed.
"It's going to be alright, Harry. Rest and we'll be safe soon."
Oh, Merlin if only that were true…
He felt his body being jostled and instinctively, like an animal, retreated into his mind, simply floating along the weightlessness of his potion and trauma addled mind. There was no refuge outside of here, he reasoned, torn between watching the light try and eat his soul away, and staying at least partially aware of what was going on around him. He could hear Remus telling Snape about his hiding place under the floorboards and suggested that his trunk might be in the cupboard under the stairs.
His head fit comfortably into the crook of someone's shoulder and he felt a blanket being placed over him. Remus, he thought with a soft sigh and felt the hands that cradled him close tighten in recognition of his relieved breath. He smelled of pine and earth, and it consoled him. They walked down the stairs, and out the back door rather than the front.
Snape was behind them after a moment, and Harry presumed that the Potion's Master had freed Hedwig and gathered his meager belongings. Snape was behind them, and every now and again he could hear the black haired man's mutterings about 'ignorant evil muggles' and 'sadistic megalomaniac's. Soon enough they were far enough away to risk a portkey.
With a sickening sensation of being sucked through a straw by his navel, they arrived to their destination. He could hear birds chirping, the wind tugging absently at his hair and he shivered at the warmth that the sun put on his pale skin. Remus shifted Harry in his arms and they continued on silently. It seemed that Snape definitely knew where he was going before they arrived.
"Rest, Harry…we're safe now…just rest."
The last thought that trickled into his exhausted brain was one he should have thought about earlier. How in the hell did they know to come to him now?
