Chapter 2.
Upon waking the next morning, Fred knew his mission for the day. Find out what a mobile was and obtain one to text Joanna. Clambering out of bed, he threw on some clothes, did his hair and raced out of the door. Fred's flat was about a ten minute walk from Camden high street so he decided to look there first. As he made his way up and down each side, he looked in every shop to see if he could see any inclination as to what a mobile may be. He had almost given up in Camden when he spotted the words 'Massive mobile phone sale today only' in the window of a shop.
'Brilliant!' Fred beamed as he walked over to this strange shop named Vodafone. As son as he stepped foot over the entrance, a Muggle man approached him. 'Can I help you sir?'
'Oh um yeah. I'm looking for a mobile.'
The sales assistant smirked. 'Well you have come to the right place. What kind of thing are you looking for? A smart phone? Or just the bare basics? Or something middle of the road?'
What was all this he was saying? Fred couldn't understand any of what it meant. So he just took a deep breath and bluffed his way through.
'Something in the middle, I don’t want anything too extravagant.' The sales assistant nodded and guided Fred over to a section of the shop.
'Now here is our range of pay as you go phones. As you can see...' Fred started to space out as the Muggle just droned on and on. Snapping back to reality, he noticed that the man had stopped talking and was obviously waiting for a reply. 'Um... yeah that's great. Can I take that one?' Fred pointed to a random phone on the wall.
'The HTC wildfire S? Yeah sure. That phone is £135 plus top up. I will just go see if we have any in stock. Won't be a second.'
Fred sighed. He couldn't see the need for all this nonsense. Is this what Muggles went through every time they went into a shop? Some buffoon nosing around them until they brought something. Out of the back room came the man with a box in his hand, he took it to a desk and beckoned Fred over to him. 'Right, how much top up would you like sir?'
'How much do you think I will need?'
The sales assistant seemed quite flabbergasted.
'I would say £50 would be a good bet.'
Fred nodded. He didn't know what these amounts meant. Muggle money was all new to him.
'So in total that will be £185 please sir. Are you paying by cash or card?'
'Cash?' Fred said taking out where his Muggle money was kept.
His father had given him a rather astonishing amount of Muggle money and taught him that the bits of parchment with purple £20 writing on them could be used more than one at a time so he handed over ten of them.
In return he was handed the remaining money and a bag with his purchase in it.
'Now sir, it has to be charged fully for twenty four hours before you can disconnect it. To top up, you enter this number here and then when prompted enter this number here. Enjoy your new mobile sir and have a brilliant day.'
Fred thanked the man and made haste back to his flat.
He did as the sales assistant advised him to and took everything out of it's packaging and tried his best to follow the instructions given to him. It all seemed to work and once reading the instructions in the book that came with it. He took Joanna's number and text her.
It was a full hour before the weird contraption that he had brought beeped at him, making him jump.
It was a reply from Joanna.
Hey Fred!! I didn't know if you were actually going to text me or not!!
It's so nice to hear from you. What ya doin? Xox
The conversation lasted for hours until Joanna suggested meeting up. They agreed a time and place then Fred started to get ready.
It was half past nine when Joanna finally turned up.
'Oh Fred I am so sorry I'm late!' she gasped. 'My photo shoot lasted so much longer that I wanted it to.'
He didn't mind. Just her turning up was enough to make him smile.
'So what do you wanna do? Shall we hit up a club or just go and chill out somewhere?'
Fred had no idea what a club was but it sounded interesting.
'Club sounds good to me.'
Joanna smiled. She knew exactly where to take him.
'Off to the Koko we go then,' she giggled.
She grabbed hold of his hand and whisked him away.
The pair spent the night, dancing, talking, drinking and laughing. Never had he felt so relaxed before. By the time they left the club, Joanna was having to hold onto Fred so she could actually stand up.
As they stood outside waiting for a taxi back to her place, they could hear a rowdy group coming up behind them.
'Oi Oi! What have we got here then?' One of them said.
Fred turned around to tell them to shut up and as soon as he did felt a fist hit his face. Pain shot through his jaw like lightning.
'Fred. Oh my god are you Ok?' Joanna dropped her newly lit cigarette to run to Fred and see if he was Ok. But one the men jumped in front of her.
'Don't move sunshine.” he snarled as he grabbed a hold of Joanna.
Fred was lying on the floor in pain, when one of the strangers friends grabbed hold of him and took him down a nearby alley way.
'Bring the skinny girl too,' he cackled.
The strange man obeyed and dragged Joanna down the same alley way.
'well well well... what do we have here?' the guy holding Fred said.
Joanna looked at Fred who was bleeding from his lip and nose.
'Grab hold of her, and make sure keep a hold of her,' said a voice from behind Joanna
The guy holding her pinned Joanna to the floor, face down.
'I'm gonna have some fun with you........ and your little friend can watch.'
Fred started to panic. Lashing out and trying to get free. 'Let me go!'
Another blow came down and hit Fred in the stomach this time.
'You will shut up and you will watch' the tormentor grabbed hold of Freds face and pointed it in Joanna's direction.
Joanna was being held to the floor by two men while another stripped her down to nothing.
The ringleader unzipped his trousers and giggled. 'I'm gonna enjoy this, never done a ginger before'
Joanna winced, she knew what was coming.
Fred tried to look away as Joanna was brutally violated by the ringleader, but was forced to watch knowing his wand was only inches from his finger tips. But he couldn't reach it
Joanna cried out in agony as her face was pushed into the concrete by a gorilla of a man with big black military boots.
As the ringleader pushed himself inside her he gloated 'oh god this one is tight' maybe doing red heads is a good plan from now on guys! This is amazing!' He thrust himself harder into Joanna who could do nothing but lay there and take it with tears streaming down her and Freds faces.
As the ringleader repeatedly pushed himself into her, his friends who were holding Fred pulled him in for a closer look. 'Here ya go... front row seats to the best show in town,' they scoffed and laughed forcing his face to within inches of Joanna's.
Fred shut his eyes. He didn't want to see Joanna like this. He couldn't bare it. 'Stop just stop... please,” he begged.
The tormentors just threw their heads back and laughed then punched him in the stomach to shut him up. That was enough.
'ACCIO WAND!' He screamed. His wand flew into his finger tips and he pointed it into the chin of the man holding him down.
The group of men cackled like hyenas. 'Ay up boys, this one thinks he's a Wizard. He's gonna abracadabra us to death!' They all laughed insanely.
'Let me go or you will regret it.'
'You think some bit of twig is gonna stop us? Give it your best shot!'
Fred took a deep breath. 'Petrificus totalus!'
The man flew back into the wall behind them and his comrades all stood there, a look of disbelief on their faces. Fred pointed his wand at the man hurting Joanna. 'Get up and leave... NOW!'
He did as he was told. 'I don't know what kind of freak you are, but this won't be the last time you see us.'
Fred put his wand back in it's hiding place and slowly approached Joanna who was laying on the floor crying. 'Joanna.... it's Ok... I'm here' Fred put his arm out to touch her and she winced.
Fred understood. After that he wouldn't want to be touched either. He stood up feebly and picked up Joanna's clothes and passed them to her.
Joanna couldn't move through fear.
'Do you want me to help you get dressed Joanna? I will, that's if you want me to?' Fred whispered quietly.
Joanna reluctantly nodded.
Fred tried to help Joanna sit up but every time he went to touch her, she flinched.
'Listen, I need you to do something for me. I need you to take hold of my arm and don't let go, no matter what happens Ok?'
Joanna didn't have a choice, she knew Fred was the only one that could help her. As she took hold of his arm, Fred Apparated back to his flat.
Joanna vomited as soon as they were inside then passed out. This was usual for those who weren't used to Apparition.
Fred picked her up and carried her to his bed. He sat there with her until she came too a few hours later.
A very woozy and confused Joanna opened her eyes.
'Where am I?'
'Relax your safe, your in my flat.'
'I had the weirdest dream. I was attacked and then you took out a wand and zapped the bad people away,' she said breathlessly.
How on earth was he supposed to tell her that wasn't a dream? That they had been attacked and that he was in fact a Wizard?
Fred sat there in silence for a few moments while he though about how to answer her without freaking her out.
'That... wasn’t a dream,' Fred took out his wand and showed her.
Joanna's face dropped. 'How could it not have been a dream. Magic doesn't exist.'
'It does Joanna. Let me show you. Wingardium Leviosa.' Fred pointed his wand to one of his shirts that was laying on the floor and levitated it into Joanna's lap. She took hold of the shirt and just sat there with it, completely bemused.
'See.'
'I...I...I...' Joanna couldn't speak.
'If you are afraid of me, there is no need to be I wont ever hurt you.'
Joanna teared up. There was such sincerity to his voice she couldn't help but believe him.
'I'm not afraid. I just... don’t know what to say. I owe you my life.'
Fred smiled at her. 'All I did was protect someone I care about.'
Tears ran down Joanna's face as the nights attack swept its way back into her memory. As she broke down, Fred went to her side and held her in his arms. He cradled her there until her tears stopped.
'I will always be here to protect you Joanna... That's a promise.'
