AN: Chapter One. Please enjoy and I would dearly appreciate any comments you have to offer on my story, this is actually my first ever Draco/Harry fic so it is new territory for me. I have tried to start it off as Canon but the Epilogue of the Canon HP books is basically ignored as it happens after my story...
Chapter one: Darkness Takes Over
It was night, London shone like a great big web of multicoloured lights, sprawled across the landscape. Number twelve Grimmauld place was quiet, the children having gone to bed. Ginny stood outside a room, an old plaque on the door read; 'Sirius'. She sighed and gently pushed the door open to the only room they hadn't redecorated. She saw her husband, sat in the dark on the bed, his wand light trained on a photograph on the wall. Its occupants grinned and waved at her from their tiny little world, she moved forwards and sat beside Harry.
"How did you know I was here?" He asked softly, without turning to look at her.
"Because this is where you always come when you're upset or worried." She replied. "How did it go today?"
Harry shrugged, finally turning to face his wife. His green eyes glittered in the wand light. "Alright, they let him off with a reprimand...but only after I'd threatened them." He sighed, running tired fingers through his hair. "I don't understand it, Ginny...I thought it would all be over...all this prejudice..."
"It's going to take a long time for the world to really heal." She replied, letting him fall into her lap and look up at her. She stroked strands of hair back from his eyes so she could see them better. "Just wait, have patience and they'll come around."
"It's all so stupid!" Harry sighed. "Teddy should be happy...he should be able to live without all this werewolf crap hanging over him...Remus was right...in a way. He said that his son would be outcast."
"But Teddy's still loved, Harry. He's got his Grandmother, his friends...I hear Victoire has been showing interest in him." She smiled.
Harry giggled. "Really? That's good..."
Ginny loved hearing Harry laugh, it made her heart feel lighter. But, she had been hearing it less and less recently, there had been a sudden upsurge in attacks on Muggles and Muggle-borns that had her husband in the office until late most nights. When he came home he was exhausted and simply ended up going to bed, she would wake sometimes to hear him muttering and tossing in his sleep...nightmares; the vestiges of his long battle against the Dark. Her smile fell slightly, she knew that they were still, so many years after Voldemorts defeat, fighting against the remnants of that awful time. Harry was doing all he could to hold it at bay, the Ministry held him in high regard and he was often working closely with Kingsley, unfortunately that was leading to his own alienation. People had got over hero worshipping him, he was no longer 'The boy who lived' he was now simply Harry Potter, Head Auror and close friends with the Minister for Magic. However, he did sometimes use his fame for the good, he went to Hogwarts to lecture to the students on Defence Against the Dark Arts and acted in an advisory capacity to the Head of the Wizengamot.
Harry's eyes had closed as Ginny smoothed hair from his face with a gentle smile. "It's like...there's this quiet, you know? Like the quiet before the storm?" He said softly, startling Ginny slightly as she'd thought he was asleep.
"What makes you say that?"
"Well..." He opened his eyes and struggled to sit up. "I can just...feel it...I know, it sounds stupid."
"No, it doesn't. You have good instincts, Harry...trust them."
He looked over his shoulder at his wife for a long minute. She saw that thoughtful frown on his face which usually meant he was planning. He stood suddenly, taking one last glance at the photograph of his father and friends before walking towards the door. "I know it's late..." He said slowly, giving her a guilty look. "But I..."
Ginny smiled. "I know."
She watched him leave and sighed but suddenly he reappeared, he leaned down, pressing his lips to hers for a long, breathtaking moment before pulling away again. "It's not going to be like last time, Ginny..." He promised her, his fingers running through her hair. "I won't let it happen again." With a small smile he left her.
Harry apparated to the Ministry, he appeared with a soft pop outside the entrance and walked towards it. Once he was inside he made his way to the golden lifts, just before he reached them someone called his name.
"Harry!"
He turned to find Kingsley walking towards him. "Minister." He greeted the man politely.
He smiled. "We are alone, I think it would be alright to call me by my name." Harry acknowledged this with a nod. "May I ask what brings you here so late?" The tall man said as they began moving towards the lifts, the place was eerily quiet.
"I needed to do some research, Kingsley." Harry replied.
"Ah, I see...does it have anything to do with Young Lupin's case?"
"Yeah...Kind of." Harry stepped into the lift and the Minister followed. His slow, deep voice soothed the sudden turmoil in Harry's stomach and he let out a small breath. "I just have a bad feeling, all these sudden attacks...they seem connected somehow."
"I see, then you noticed it too?"
Harry looked sideways at him. "Noticed what?"
"The dark clouds." Kingsley shook his head slowly. "I can see yet another struggle in the future, don't you?"
"Yeah..." Harry ran fingers through his hair again. "I just hope we can stop it before..." The lift doors opened and Harry, about to step out onto his floor, stopped suddenly. He had nearly walked into someone. "Oh, sorry." He said and stepped back. He found himself looking at someone he had never expected to see inside the Ministry. "Malfoy!" He exclaimed.
"Potter." Malfoy nodded. "Ah, Minister...you summoned me?"
Kingsley smiled at Harry. "Yes, I think we should all go to my office to discuss this matter."
Harry followed the pair with a tiny frown, he had long ago settled his differences with Malfoy, and by saving his life Draco now owed him a Life Debt. But there was always a tension between them and now he was here at the ministry speaking to Kingsley. Some of Harry's old rivalry flared up suddenly but he squashed it, he was about to find out the reason for Draco's sudden appearance. They entered the Ministers office and waited patiently for Kingsley to seat himself behind his desk. "Now, I am sure you wish to know why you are here?"
Draco nodded, avoiding Harry's gaze. "This is most unusual, I received the owl and came as soon as I could...but why so late?"
Kingsley frowned slightly before reaching into his desk and withdrawing a paper. "This is tomorrow's edition of the Daily Prophet, Harry, I'm sure you would wish to examine it. Turn to page three."
Harry frowned before picking up the paper and opening it. He read the article before scoffing loudly and throwing it onto the desk, Malfoy raised an eyebrow at Harry's blatant disregard for hierarchy. "What is this rubbish?" Harry said, indicating the paper. "I am not in league with Dark Wizards!"
"We know this...as does most of the wizarding community, however, since your heated defence of Ted the other day, people have been trying defame you."
Harry sighed and crossed his arms across his chest. "Nothing new there I suppose." He said angrily.
Draco leaned over and picked up the paper, his grey eyes scanned the page as he read;
Harry Potter, really as clean as they say?
Article by Caleb Newton.
Harry Potter has been the subject of many an authors pen over the years, he has been the topic of multiple biographies, articles and even some children's books. However, no writer has ever been as close to the truth as one Rita Skeeter (Ex-reporter, Daily Prophet/Witch Weekly) to those who have followed the boy who lived's rise to fame, Skeeter's many stories have attracted great interest. The Prophet, under new, startling revelations, sought out an interview with the retired reporter in her home in Gretna Green.
She was more than happy to recount her many encounters with the famous Head Auror, and she even divulged some little known secrets about the well loved Potter.
"Oh, of course, there were loads of rumours concerning his odd defeat of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named! I kept my ear close to the ground for a while after he did it...and some of the things I dug up would make you rethink your image of the Great Harry potter..."
I asked her what these rumours were.
"Well, there's the fact that for such a long time he had disappeared, for months he left us wandering if he was dead or if he had abandoned us. All we got were random rumours, we were never really sure what he was doing with his time, but I have discovered that he was connected to some rather...disturbing Dark Magic...How else was he going to kill The Dark Lord? I dug around and discovered that after escaping the Wizarding Bank, Gringotts, he ended up in the hands of some Snatchers, for those who are too young to remember, snatchers were men who wanted fast galleons and so went around grabbing those ones who were most wanted by the ministry. Anyway, he was then involved in the murder of an innocent House Elf! No one knows the exact circumstances of it's death, but there is a small number of people who are convinced it was a sacrifice to some Dark Rite. Potter was also involved deeply with Albus Dumbledore's death, not a single person knows exactly what happened there. Then of course you have all the odd things that happened to him, not many people know but he could speak Paseltongue, he was in fact the Godson of notorious mass murderer Sirius Black! Potter was also very disturbed, he was always claiming to have visions of the Dark Lord, always having to be excused from classes whilst at school...It's all very suspect. I'm simply surprised that no one has questioned this before now."
Rita was more than happy to divulge her thoughts on his involvement with the recent case of a young Hogwarts student, Teddy Lupin, and his trial for allegedly attacking several Muggles, even sending one to hospital.
"Now, you see, there's another odd thing! He's been connected to Dark Creatures all his life, being friends with half-giants and werewolves...The boy who was on trial is, in fact, his Godson. My suspicions are that he is teaching his young Godson to follow in his dark footsteps. Mark my words, Harry Potter is dangerous and potentially a threat to our peaceful society. I don't believe that he killed the Dark Lord for our sakes..."
On that dark note, I left Rita to her much deserved retirement.
Now, many of my readers will question why defame Harry Potter at all? He did, after all, save us from a great and terrible evil, but then again...why did he do it? How did he do it? Does anyone know the whole truth?
Draco snorted and dropped the paper. "It seems the Wizarding world is once again questioning your motives Potter." He said.
"They could have done this earlier!" Harry sighed, rubbing his tired eyes. "Seriously...I have a family!"
"We know, we are concerned about this...there have been rumours for years about that final battle, as when you were in combat with the Dark Lord, most were injured and hardly able to fight...those who weren't there have begun to wonder why you didn't tell them exactly how you killed him."
Harry's hand went automatically to the scar on his forehead, he rubbed it absently as he thought about his situation. "Let me guess, they want me to step down?" He said.
"I would assume that this was intended as a threat, yes." Kingsley said carefully, eyeing Harry. "Are you alright?"
Harry dropped his hand. "Yeah, sorry...Habit." He shrugged. "But I don't understand...why are they so intent on trying to defame me? I haven't done anything to them..."
"Except threaten to bring down the might of the Auror's on them." Draco muttered. "I understand why I was summoned Minister. You want me to tell you about the Brock's, am I correct?"
"How...?" Harry's frown went from annoyance to confusion.
Draco shook his head. "I don't know too much about him, however, his family have been suspected of being heavily into the Dark Arts, since as long as I can remember they have had strong connections to the oldest family's. The Black's, and..." he paused as if reluctant to speak, but he forced it out. "Mine, of course."
"You have confirmed my suspicions, Mr. Malfoy." Kingsley replied. "It is true, Brock has been under suspicion for a long time, however, we have never had any proof on his activities. Your threat has him running scared so he is now out for blood...I suggest you be wary from now on Harry, this man is dangerous."
Harry sighed, sinking into a chair. He covered his face with his hands. "Will it ever end?" he whispered to no one in particular. "It's like I've got a bloody target on my back..."
"That is what you get for killing Dark Wizards..." Draco muttered, he turned to gaze out of the window, seeing everything in his mind's eye. It was as if it had only happened yesterday. He could see Voldemort declaring Harry's death to all who would listen, he could see the enchanted flames as they devoured his stupid friend. With a heavy sigh he closed his eyes, he would never, ever forgive himself.
"Well..." Harry stood abruptly. "I have some idea's...I think I'll go do some research..." Harry turned to the door.
"Harry!" He turned back to see Kingsley looking slightly worried. "You do not look well, are you alright?"
Harry smiled. "As well as I can be with people out to get me, Minister. Honestly, I'm fine."
Draco could see what the minister was on about, Harry's face was pale, a small amount of stubble covered his jaw and his hair was standing on end from the amount of times he'd run his fingers through it. He was also looking thinner, his eyes slightly listless and circles had begun to creep beneath them. He looked as if he hadn't been sleeping much and Malfoy realised that he wasn't the only one haunted by those events, so many years ago.
