Not ten minutes after Salazar left Lord Voldemort returned. “Where is Salazar?” He asked Hermione.
“He went on a walk around the castle. He thinks I should hate him because you’re his father.”
“Do you?”
“No. I love him. We can’t control where we come from.”
Voldemort nodded, “I suppose he’s told you I won’t tell him who his mother is.”
“It bugs him, not knowing. He always thought he was an orphan.”
Voldemort sat down on the couch next to her, “He was, until I was reborn. I killed his mother in a fit of rage.”
“Who was she?”
“You’ve seen his eyes, haven’t you?” Voldemort turned to look at her, surprised, “Your best friend has the same eyes, after all. I figured you of all people could figure it out. I even used her last name to name him.”
Hermione’s eyes widened and her mouth formed a giant ‘O’ in shock, “Not Harry’s mom Lily!”
Voldemort nodded, “Other than the eyes, he looks much more like me. His hair is like mine was, his nose and lips and cheek bones are similar to mine, his body type…there’s no questioning that Salazar is my son.”
“But Mrs. Potter…”
“Lily didn’t want her husband or Severus to know that she had it bad for the Dark Lord. She might have publicly vowed to bring me down, but she certainly wasn’t doing that in private.”
“Salazar and Harry are very close in age.”
“They’re nearly eleven months apart. Salazar was born September 9th at 6:06 in the morning. I was with her when she delivered him. Two house elves were there. I had a ministry official forge the documents. Salazar Raphael Evans. I had Fenrir Greyback guarding him. When I fell, Fenrir placed him in a Muggle orphanage. He was afraid if he was discovered too soon, someone might try to harm my boy.”
“Why won’t you tell him?”
“Salazar would tell Harry, and then he’d realize why I really killed his mother.”
“Jealousy,” Hermione breathed, still in shock at the pronouncement.
“Very much so. You’re very astute, Miss Granger. Just as Salazar said.”
“You call him Salazar,” she smiled, “I thought I was the only one that does that. Everyone else calls him Sal.”
“I believe you use the proper name for things. Lily was foolish, went back to her husband. Got pregnant right away with Harry. I couldn’t believe it.”
“Poor Salazar; he wasn’t wanted but Harry was.”
“Yet both became orphans,” Voldemort smirked. “I wanted my son, Miss Granger. I was very proud when Lily gave birth to him. He was a very handsome baby. But either way, they’re half-brothers.”
“I can’t even begin to think about Harry and what he’ll say about all this…” Hermione stared at Lord Voldemort in wonder, “When are you going to tell Salazar?”
“I’m not sure he should know. Would you want to know?”
“It’s better than thinking you’re unwanted. You wanted him and that matters very much to him. But he doesn’t know what happened to his mother.”
“Fine, I’ll tell him,” Voldemort rubbed his brow. “From taking over the Wizarding World to dealing with my teen son and talking with his Muggleborn girlfriend…what kind of Dark Despot am I?”
“A father,” Hermione smirked. “He’s wanted that as long as I’ve known him. Don’t hurt him,” she warned him, becoming very stern, “I love Salazar, and I don’t want to see my boyfriend hurt by you because you don’t really want to be a father.”
“If I didn’t want to be a father, I wouldn’t have told him the truth,” he answered.
Salazar opened the door, “D-Dad? Hermione? What the fuck is going on?”
Hermione stood up and pulled Salazar to the couch, “Listen to him, Salazar. Please,” she asked, kissing him sweetly, “I love you,” she whispered.
“Your mother,” Voldemort said, “you wanted to know who she was.”
“You’re actually going to tell me?”
“I told your girlfriend,” he answered, “if you really wish to know, I’ll tell you. But I don’t want you to hate me.”
“You killed her,” Salazar whispered. Hermione tightened her hold on him.
“I did. But not exactly how I meant to,” Voldemort sighed and continued, “your mother’s name was Lily Evans. She was the brightest student in her class, and she was very attractive.” Voldemort stood up and started pacing, “But she was a Muggleborn. Attracted as I was, I couldn’t be open about being with her. And she said she wanted to marry James Potter.”
“Did she love him?”
“I don’t know what her emotions were,” he frowned, “Lily was very difficult to read, and played her cards close to the vest. At any rate, she told me she wanted to be with me and I did want her. She married James Potter, but she would come to me during the day and we would…well I think you can guess,” he smirked. “She got pregnant with you and didn’t want to tell Potter, so she lied to him and said she wasn’t pregnant. She cast a few spells, very Dark Arts actually, to conceal her growing stomach. Everyone saw a flat stomach when in fact she was quite large. When you were born she gave you to me. Then she went back to Potter. Got pregnant right away. Told me she wanted nothing more to do with me. That I wasn’t going to change for her and he made her happier anyway.” Voldemort shrugged, “I snapped.”
“You killed her?”
“Not right away, I wouldn’t kill a woman who’s pregnant. I do have standards, you know.” Even Hermione fought a laugh at that. “Harry was a year old when I killed them. I was trying to find them and Pettigrew told me where she was. I then hurried over. I suppose a part of me wanted to see her desperately. I found them. Potter tried to stop me from getting in and I told him I would see the mother of my child anytime I wanted. Potter…he snapped. He turned his wand on his wife and I killed him before he could kill her. She screamed at me that I wouldn’t take Harry and I tried to reason with her that I wasn’t going to, but she went off the deep end and started proclaiming that you weren’t her real son and Harry was going to bring me down and that she would be there the day I was killed and I just…I lost control of my temper and consequently, my powers.”
“So you killed her on accident?”
“Her and the house,” he nodded.
“But Harry lived,” Hermione said.
“I don’t know why. Perhaps it was because he reminded me of Salazar, black hair and green eyes. But I honestly don’t know.”
Salazar stared at his father, “I-I have a brother.”
“Half-brother,” Voldemort corrected.
“Still, he’s related to me. Before this summer I was completely alone in the world, save for Hermione. Now I have you and Hermione and…and Harry.”
“Are you going to tell him?” Hermione looked up, surprised.
“I have to, I think. I’d want to know,” Salazar finally managed to say.
“I must go, I’ve stayed too long,” Voldemort turned to his son, “take care of yourself. I am proud of you, Salazar. It was nice to meet you, Miss Granger. Take excellent care of my boy.”
“I will,” she smiled. Voldemort Disapparated. She turned to her boyfriend, “Are you okay?”
“I think so, just confused.” Hermione caressed his arm, “I love you,” he said.
“I love you,” she kissed him, “I don’t care who your dad is, Sal.”
“Good, cause I can’t change it. And…well he’s nice to me. I like him.”
“I can’t believe how civil he was,” Hermione whispered, laying her head on his shoulder.
He lay her down on the sofa and climbed on top of her, “Maybe we should enjoy the time together we have before school,” he kissed her.
“I agree,” she leaned up to deepen the kiss, “we’ll be so busy when school starts.”
“Indeed,” he breathed.
