Chapter One: Graius Caeli (Grey Skies)
Sirius gazed around the great hall, still amazed by its beauty. James sat at his side, devouring toast and marmalade, they had yet to properly get to know their dorm mates, there were only two others. One was a small round boy who had taken to following them around, the other was a quiet boy with soft light brown hair and eyes the colour of chocolate, he smiled at them but had yet to make any introductions.
Finally their head of house McGonagall began walking down the aisle and handing out time tables, Sirius took his and gazed at it. “Transfiguration all morning.” He said as he finished his tea.
“I like Transfiguration...” James said absently as he dusted crumbs from his hands. “Saw my mum transfigure stuff before, always wanted to do it.”
Sirius smiled as they both stood and picked up their bags. “Well, let’s go then.” The round boy followed them as they began making their way through the corridors, up the moving staircases and to the classroom. They entered and took seats near the front. “So, what do you reckon we’ll be doing?” Sirius asked.
“Dunno, I really hope they do human transfiguration! I’d like to learn how to do that.”
Sirius gazed at his wand for a minute, it was an old one, passed down through his family. It was Ebony with inlays of ivory in a beautiful pattern of leaves and vines, he liked his wand and had had it ever since he could hold one, he knew that most people in his class had been prevented from using magic outside school, but his parents encouraged it. He knew more spells than most would realise. “I’d quite like to learn that too...” He muttered absently waving his wand over his quill, he watched it turn into glass.
James gaped at him. “Wow! When did you learn that?”
Sirius smirked. “I was allowed to do magic at home.”
Before James could reply the doors opened to reveal McGonagall, she strode into the class room and paused at Sirius’ desk. “A glass quill? That will useless...”
“Sorry Professor.” Sirius returned the quill to its original state and hung his head.
“Did you transfigure that?” McGonagall asked, her face unreadable. Sirius flushed and nodded. “That is extremely advanced magic for your level...Where did you learn that spell?”
“At home...” He muttered.
McGonagall nodded. “I see, you know that you-...”
“I’m not allowed to do magic outside school, Professor, I know.”
“Good, well, that spell was perfectly performed, ten points to Gryffindor.”
Sirius grinned and shot James a smug look, James rolled his eyes. “Bloody show off.” He muttered and they broke out into silent giggles as Professor McGonagall began the lesson.
By the end of the day Sirius was buzzing, he had breezed through the lessons, having learnt most of it before school. His teachers were impressed and the only lesson in which he hadn’t done so well in was potions in which Slughorn began doting on the Severus boy and the red haired Lily Evans. Sirius and James watched the pair from the corners of their eyes until Sirius smirked. “Watch this...” He muttered and pointed his wand beneath the desk at Severus Snapes potion, with a muttered breath the cauldron exploded. People screamed as they were spattered by its contents, luckily the potion was a cure for boils so no harm came to those who ended up covered in it. Sirius burst into laughter, James soon followed and they held each other as more laughter erupted from other students. Severus turned on them, his eyes narrowing as he glared at the two boys, his face was covered in thick globs of green liquid and the sight made Sirius and James laugh even harder.
“Oh my! Severus! What on earth happened?” Slughorn bent over the remnants of the cauldron and peered inside. Sirius stifled his giggles and gave his wand a sharp flick, Snape jerked and fell into the back of Slughorn, both fell with a resounding crash into the slimy dungeon floor.
Back in the common room Sirius and James burst into lively hysterics as they remembered watching the potions master and his star pupil slipping and sliding around as they tried to regain their feet. James clapped Sirius on the back, wiping tears of mirth away from his eyes. “Oh...oh Siri...you’re amazing!” He gasped, clutching his sides.
“I know.” Sirius gave him a cheeky grin.
“That wasn’t very nice you know.”
Both boys turned around to see their quiet dorm mate standing behind them, they broke into identical grins. “It was a laugh, give us a break.” James replied smoothly.
The boy frowned at them. “Still, what you’re doing is bullying.”
Sirius raised an eyebrow. “Bullying? Nah, we were just having fun...hey, you’re in the bed next to mine right?”
“Yes...and now I wish I wasn’t.”
“What’s your name?” James asked. “We haven’t had a chance to talk.”
“Remus Lupin.” The boy replied, still standing stiffly. “I don’t think I want to be friends with people who take pleasure in taunting others.” He turned and walked away leaving James and Sirius to shrug.
The first week passed in blissful joy for Sirius, he found himself loving every moment he spent in James’ company, he excelled at his lessons, he was praised by students and teachers alike and he discovered that James was just as talented as he was.
The weekend arrived to find the two best friends sitting beneath a stone archway in the grounds as they watched the third years and above leave to go to Hogsmeade. Sirius leaned against the stone at his back, James nudged him and he looked down at a white bag he was holding out to him. “Liquorish Wands.” He said. “My mum sent them to me.”
Sirius took one with a smile, he stood up on the low stone seat and wrapped his arm around the pillar that formed the arch, he watched the students marching in groups down towards Hogsmeade. Suddenly he felt something hit him in the side of his head, he flinched back to find James brandishing his Liquorish wand at him and grinning mischievously. “En Guard!” He cried and began attacking Sirius with the sweet.
Sirius let out a single bark of laughter, giving way beneath the onslaught, he stepped easily around a pillar and lifted his own Liquorish Wand to parry James’ thrust. He giggled and spun lightly on his feet, jabbing his new friend in the side.
People stopped in the corridor to watch the two first years do battle with the sweets, their laughter echoed to the rooftops as they swash buckled. Sirius proved the better fencer, he was fast and light on his feet, easily dodging and parrying while James became sticky, but neither one backed down. They moved down the corridors, suddenly Sirius backed right into someone, he dodged aside. “Oh, sorry professor!” He called as he pushed James back under a furious assault from his rather battered looking sweet.
McGonagall blinked as she watched the pair of students fighting, her lips twitched in a rare smile as she turned to her friend, Pamona Sprout. “They will be trouble.” She said and Pamona smiled in response, she knew that McGonagall was already taking a liking to the pair.
Remus was sitting quietly by the steps leading to the grounds off the front doors, suddenly he heard a round of raucous giggles and shouting. He looked up from his book only to see his dorm mates fencing with what appeared to be Liquorish. He raised an eyebrow as they passed him and ran off into the grounds, a whoop of delight escaping Sirius as he jumped in the air and tackled James to the floor, they rolled around together in the grass.
James found himself pinned down by Sirius, they were panting heavily and grinning down into each others faces, suddenly, with a movement so swift and smooth that it caught Sirius off guard, James got his leg behind Sirius’ knees and flipped them both over so he sat on top. “Victory!” He cried, holding his Liquorish wand aloft.
Sirius chuckled brightly. “I suppose I will give you this one, Potter, but I was kicking your scrawny arse until I brought you down.”
“It was a ploy.” James muttered, taking a bit from his sweet with a grin. “I was lulling you into a false sense of security.”
Sirius snorted derisively. “Keep telling yourself that.”
Before James could retort there was a shout and a gale of laughter, Sirius pushed James off of him and gazed back up the grassy hill to see Remus stood up with his hands curled into fists at his sides, he was shouting furiously at a group of older children. Sirius frowned and James stood up, together they moved forward.
“...because it’s mine! Give it back!” Remus said, his eyes narrowed angrily.
“What is it? It’s only a book, it can’t be that important.” One boy said, with a glance at his tie Sirius realised he was Slytherin...Evan Rosier. “Look! It’s a Diary! Come on...lets read it!”
“No! Stop!” Remus made to snatch the book as James and Sirius ran up.
“Oi!” James shouted, the boys turned. “What are you doing with that? It’s not yours! Give it back.”
Rosier sneered. “And what are you going to do about, Potter?”
James opened his mouth to speak but Sirius held out his arm, halting him. “He won’t have to do anything...” He said softly, a small, almost cruel smile lighting his face. “Rosier, give the book back to him.”
“Or what? You know what’ll happen when the family find out that the eldest son of the Black household has betrayed them by getting sorted into Gryffindor?”
“I know better than you, Evan.” Sirius said in that same, freezing tone. “But I would be more worried about yourself...what would mummy and daddy think when they hear that you were resorting to callous bullying?” His smirk widened. “Would they think you were comporting yourself with dignity as befits a pureblood?”
Rosier went pale. “You wouldn’t dare!” He hissed in a trembling voice.
Sirius’ eyes glittered behind his fringe. “Oh wouldn’t I? Try me.”
Rosier sneered. “I’ll get you for this, Black! This isn’t the end.” He threw the book at James who snatched it smoothly out the air, the group watched Rosier and friends run off.
“Here...are you alright?” James asked, handing the book back to Remus who took it.
“Y-yes I’m fine...thank you...”
Sirius shrugged. “It was nothing.”
“What was all that? Do you know each other?” James asked.
Sirius frowned darkly. “We’re cousins, I told you most of family have been put into Slytherin...”
“Oh...”
“Sirius Black, eldest son of one of the oldest pureblood families in Britain.” Remus said softly, Sirius turned to him and raised an eyebrow, he shrugged slightly guiltily. “I researched the main families before coming here...I...I’m half-blood so I don’t know much about the old families.”
Sirius smiled. “Well, there we have it, my big secrets out.” He chuckled to hide the creeping dread.
“Wait a moment...” James’ eyes widened. “My mum’s maiden name was Black...I’d forgotten because she doesn’t talk about it...wow...so we’re related?”
“Most of the pureblood families are related James, but that would explain my mother’s reaction...” He ended the sentence in a mutter.
“Reaction?” James looked at Sirius curiously. “To what?”
Sirius steeled his heart. “You’re a Bloodtraitor.” He said quickly. “My mum said so, she told me that your mother and father were bloodtraitors and I should avoid you...I...I was curious, I’ve never met a bloodtraitor before so I wanted to see what you were like.”
James’ eyes darkened, his back stiffened. “Bloodtraitor?” He muttered. “Where did you learn stuff like that?”
Sirius shrugged. “It’s the truth, you don’t take any pride in your pure blood, I’ve seen you talking to Muggle-born’s and the likes...but you’re not so bad...I like you...I don’t see a problem seeing as your pureblood.”
James seemed to struggle for a moment. “Why should it even matter?” He asked finally, deflating a little, his eyes clouding with confusion.
“Well I...” Sirius frowned slowly. “...I...I...” He gazed at James and Remus for a long time, James was wonderful and he enjoyed his company, Remus might have been a little stiff-necked but he seemed alright, neither were anything like the monsters that his mother claimed they were supposed to be. He bit his lip. “I’m...i’m not sure...”
“Sirius...what kind of family are you from?” James asked carefully, eyeing his new freind with wariness.
“An old one.” Sirius said slowly. “Old and proud...generations of purebloods going right back to the middle ages...My mum told me that bloodtraitors are as bad as Mu-muggle-borns...but you’re not. She’s...w-wrong...” He stumbled over the word and shuddered violently. “They’re...all wrong...” His eyes glittered and he giggled slightly, his eyes darting from side to side. “Just...don’t tell her that, alright?” He smiled awkwardly, his mind buzzing with these strange new revelations...had what he been taught to believe all been lies? As he went to sleep that night the question haunted him, he was plagued by childhood memories, he could see the picture his mother had painted of Muggles with great big green, greedy eyes and claws for hands...he rolled over and gazed up at the hangings above his head and sighed. Why was everything so confusing? He felt as if the sun had been obscured by grey clouds, his pure enjoyment of his friends was tainted with the realisation that everything he had been taught to believe about the world could be wrong, he decided that he would risk his mother’s wrath tomorrow and send her an owl asking what was going on. With that thought he drifted into sleep.
