Chapter 2
Rolanda Hooch had had quite a few men and women in her life, but all for shorter whiles. To everyone's surprise she and Minerva had made it through years together already… and had gotten married, something most vividly recalled her saying she wouldn't ever even consider.
She used to state that a little piece of paper could not change anything… only cause a lot of stress. Still, when they had laid in bed together one night after having made love a few times… and when Minerva had been dreaming away slowly, saying how ridiculous she considered it that gay couples couldn't legally get married in Muggle communities – something so very special taken away from them with that – Rolanda's mentality toward marriage had begun to change. Especially when Minerva had continued on the verge of falling asleep that it must be one of the best days of your life when you could be more beautiful than anyone else around you… in a beautiful long dress with your hair and makeup perfected; when you could see your lover pop from their surroundings for their beauty.
She had already fallen asleep soon after, leaving Rolanda to fantasize about her beautiful Minerva in a dress nearly as beautiful – made of soft green silk in her vivid dream. Minerva's hair more curly than it in fact was and pinned up with a beautiful diamond and flowery hairpin. In the fantasy her eyes were even more expressive than they in fact were, and despite the exhaustion that was overtaking her as well, Rolanda could again feel a gush of warm wetness between her legs at the imaginary vision of her wife.
She couldn't truly pinpoint the difference between her relationship with Minerva and all others before her, but Rolanda was certain that she wouldn't have waited for the others. Maybe she wouldn't even have felt that intense feeling of loss over them either. Maybe she wouldn't have ached so much for them as for Minerva. She had hurt from the heartaches for sure, but most of the time she had been the one ending it for various reasons.
Minerva would have to return in September for the new school year anyway. Rolanda assumed that Minerva must have enlightened the headmaster before leaving either personally or rather by letter, considering the subject of her departure. So she waited until that day alone in their rooms, trying not to think about what Minerva might be doing and with whom. Her jealousy was never more there.
With a heavy heart Minerva McGonagall eventually returned home to Hogwarts at the end of the summer holidays. Rolanda and she had not had any contact at all in those two months that had passed by, and nervousness was the key emotion as she stood at the gates of the fabled institution where both she and Rolanda had once been pupils and now taught. She bowed her head as her hand touched the cool metal, and at once a recollection from not long ago filled her mind. Tears began to appear at the edges of her eyes as the last encounter overtook her again…
The wizard was handsome in more than one sense of the one word, and Minerva considered it odd that he was alone there. She quietly wondered whether or not the man was single. There was only one way to find answers, and so, gathering all the Gryffindor courage she could possibly muster and which would often be associated with her later, she slipped from her stool, grabbed her whiskey and walked over to him, sitting on the spare stool beside him. He smiled at her. "Hi, there."
Minerva smiled, a blush unconsciously creeping up her face and flushing her cheeks. "Hi."
Most of the time, the men had come to her. Minerva had made the first move that time in order to get a different outcome, but the result of all those conversations had been the same. Somehow most men seemed in for a shag, nothing more… and while Minerva wanted to know whether sexual intercourse would be different with them, she was not the type of woman who could jump into bed with a stranger. She had known this before leaving Rolanda… but in order to find herself, find answers… she had needed to do it… change herself. The easiest way to get over her reluctance was drinking. Yet intoxicated or not, the same thing happened over and over again…
His lips moved to her neck as her eyes fluttered closed. Whereas Rolanda was all but gentle as well, the nips were too painful to even be compared to her. Those lips were not her. Those hands slipping under Minerva's top were not her. The scent that penetrated her nostrils was not Rolanda…
Then the other wormed his way between her slightly spread legs, and Minerva began panicking. This was not her wife, but another… and she couldn't do it. She just couldn't continue. As a stray hand made for her skirt, the hands that had clutched the sheets tightly until then, suddenly released their hold and immediately fell on the man's shoulders, pushing him away and off her. "I'm sorry, I can't do it…"
Minerva had lost track of how many times that sentence had come from her lips in the last two months. She had never gotten further than that, with some not even further than kissing… So she stood there, not having gained anything at all… but the fear of having lost instead settled in her abdomen, constricting her intestines in a tight knot as she slowly left the gate behind her and walked up the pathway to the entry of Hogwarts.
Her feet carried her to the building and from there to the rooms she and Rolanda shared as if by instinct. She met no one. She didn't know if she should be happy or sad over it, but by the time she raised her hand to knock on her own door, her heart was hammering, and she could barely breathe from the emotions and whatnot that ran through her.
It took a while until the door opened, to reveal her wife. She still looked the very same as two months earlier. Minerva's eyes began to water at the sight, and all she wanted to do was crash forward and hug her, but she didn't dare to. She feared she had lost that privilege by having gone… However, that was counted without Rolanda, it seemed. The elder witch leaned forward and enveloped her wife in a tight hug. Instead of moaning against her creaking bones, Minerva hugged her back hard, never wanting to let go. "I… I couldn't do it…" she uttered before bursting into tears.
Both of them were glad they could continue on from where they had ended almost from that moment. Not much had changed in the meantime and annoyance and such still flared sometimes, but they remained together until death did their part.
Sometimes you settle with the disadvantages for the advantages. No single relationship is ever entirely great and positive, whether the realization comes at once or later… but some aspects of it may be so great, that they royally make up for it in the end.
