A/N: Please note that I changed the pairings!!!! Also I searched but could not find whether or not if Bella's parents were actually Death Eaters or not. I know that Sirius' weren't even though they supported the ideas behind it all. But either way I have placed both in families that house Death Eaters, with parents that did enforce the idea of Blood purity. Also, I'm not going to change their appearances only some of their mannerisms. Simply because they are not the true children of these families. They were placed there by magic not by conception. The only way they'd figure it out is probably by doing a muggle DNA test or something and I don't see that happening. The mothers carried them during the pregnancy so as far as the families are concerned they are family. And if there are any major mistakes let me know, I had to edit it myself and I'm a blonde.
Chapter One
"Stop pestering her, Cissy," Bellatrix scoffed hearing the low sniffling coming from the crouching figure. When would their pale sister realize that the age of nine was still too young for a child to worry about impressing the opposite sex? Besides, little Ginerva had another two years before attending school. It didn’t matter who their youngest sibling ended up fancying, all Blacks were wed by arrangement. It was her personal opinion that dear Narcissa was practicing her role as the wife of Lucius Malfoy. The contract had been drawn as soon as the blonde had turned ten. Bella didn’t care much for her own intended but she knew her place. At the age of sixteen she knew what was expected of her.
Fourteen year old Narcissa ignored the protest from her elder to draw the brush once more through the thick red locks. For years she’d been appointed the odd Black, now she wasn’t alone. Bella would often comment on why little Ginny was born with a head full of dark red hair. It was true that most Blacks came with dark hair but there were a few family members down in their history that had been blessed with blonde and red. Being the two youngest they had simply lucked out when it came to looks and appeal. "We’ll be finished soon then you can go play."
"Okay," the sniffle was halted as the brush yanked out another tangle. Little Ginerva Black wouldn’t complain out loud at the treatment. She knew as a Black she had to be a lady at all times. This lesson had been completely forgotten earlier when Luna had come along with her father. Bella had said the visit was so Cissy could formally have dinner with her intended. What was formal? As long as she could remember the Malfoys had always stopped by regularly for dinner. She adored these visits because it gave her more time to spend with her best friend. She didn’t understand the talk of arranging a contract or mingling their family. "Are you leaving, Cissy?"
"Don’t be silly." Narcissa parted the long hair into four sections. Out of all four sisters, she was closest to Ginerva. Andy was the eldest and had already graduated Hogwarts. "I just started school. First, I have to finish my education. No Black is allowed to be raised without one. I will eventually become a wife and mother, it’s an honor to be part of the Malfoy family. Lucius is a very fine man."
"He’s boring," Ginny didn’t care for him. Every time she saw him she was sure he had to go to the loo and was just holding it to be polite. The boy never smiled and barely spoke. She didn’t want an arranged paper. If her parents did that then she’d burn it. Bella had taught her the spell last week. "Can’t we choose?"
"If only, I know who I’d choose." Bella sighed thinking of the image of the Dark Lord. The man was everything she wanted in a man. Strong, fierce, and an unsatiable thirst for death. The man had been here last week to speak with their father. He was looking for loyal supporters. As soon as she graduated she’d be pledging her loyalty. Unfortunately her parents had arranged her hand to be given to one of the Lestrange brothers. She wouldn’t admit to her parents that while in school, she did her best to ignore them. Being pureblood was one of her requirements but neither was much to look at. Might as well as have a spot of fun before doing her duty.
"Don’t cackle, it’s very unbecoming." Narcissa snapped at the brunette that only gnashed teeth in protest. It was no wonder Ginny was starting to pick up bad habits. They had an image to withhold. She understood why the little girl would find Lucius boring. Her intended was nothing like his sister. Luna Abigail Malfoy had come late and after years of trying for a second child, so she was a little spoiled and wild. Even strict and serious Lucius had a soft spot for the little nymph. "Besides, from what I hear there is already talk of a union between your friend and another Black."
"Naturally, I’m sure that bat wet her knickers the moment a female Malfoy had been birthed. She’s been foaming for years knowing you were going to be given to Lucius. Now her dear little Sirius won’t be forced to marry a Goyle." Bella knew exactly what her dear aunt wanted. As much as she envied her sibling for being given someone as handsome as Lucius she didn’t want someone she could run over. Lucius had the act down but was nothing more than a boy playing at growing into a man. Narcissa would run that marriage. Her sister would probably have to do all the work in the bed as well.
Ginny wasn’t sure what that meant. Did they mean Luna? Luna couldn’t get married, she was too young and they didn’t like boys. What Black? Whatever! They weren’t going to get married to some boy. They had already made a pack to remain friends forever. She could remember the first time she’d met the girl. They had become friends instantly, like it was meant to be. She knew some things were meant to be and their friendship was just one of them. They did everything together. There was no way she’d allow Luna to marry a boy. However, she had been raised to respect her family and those of equal blood. Would she be forced to marry once she was out of Hogwarts? That meant she would have only seven years of freedom. What kind of boy would she want to marry? "If I marry he’ll have to be very handsome, like father. He’ll have to have an excellent job so I may build my own Qudditch pitch or I’ll simply deny him his rights."
"Ginerva, where did you hear that?" Narcissa scolded the girl in her most stern tone. Did she realize what his rights were? Was it possible the youngest already knew about sexual interactions? She quickly turned her head to point an accusing glare at the sister that was most likely responsible for the ginger’s extended knowledge.
"Don’t look at me, I didn’t have the talk with her." Bellatrix sneered knowing what that look was for. She did have plans on having a very long discussion with her baby sister one day but not for several years. Every Black woman must know exactly how to extort what they want from the men in their lives. She knew exactly what games to play to get her soon to be husband to bend to her will. "Perhaps she chanced upon you and your dear Lucius out on the balcony last month when you were both to preoccupied to notice that the drapes weren’t completely closed."
"No, that’s not where I learned it." Ginny spun around to prevent the fight that was about to break out in her room. As fun as it was to watch the two throw about hexes, she didn’t want it taking place in her sanctuary. "Well, I first heard all about husbandly rights last year when father was discussing your papers with that tall man. The ugly one with the crooked nose and hairy ears said he wanted to make sure that you couldn’t deny him what was rightfully his because he would accept nothing less than three sons. Then his father snapped to stop thinking with his cock. It wasn’t until I spotted Cissy with her Lucius on the balcony that I realized what this cock was. I then presumed it was a disgusting muggle term for a man’s penis seeing as Cissy had it in her mouth when Lucius informed her and anyone that chanced by that he loved the way she sucked his."
"HAHAHA!" Bellatrix enjoyed the way the color literally drained from the blonde’s face. So much for the innocent ploy dear, sweet Cissy put on. "Already sucking his cock are we? Hear I was thinking that all of the rumors about Lucius were just that. So it’s true that he likes to perform in public? Whatever would our Father think?"
"Shut up! We will not discuss this any longer. Ginerva, you will forget anything you saw or heard. That was between my boyfriend and myself." Narcissa wasn’t going to apologize for her actions. It was true that she was a little young to be doing such things but it made him happy. He fully accepted that she wasn’t willing to go all the way until they were wed and he was perfectly content to wait. She already knew of his sordid past before they had become engaged. It was exactly that, in the past. Lucius belonged to her now and she’d do whatever it took to keep him. It wasn’t her fault that she actually loved the one she was going to marry.
"Don’t worry, I am trying my best to forget. I was honestly appalled that you would put something like that in your mouth. You eat with your mouth." Ginny turned to face the mirror again to reach for her ribbon. She might as well put her hair up so she could go play with Luna after dinner. If they were lucky they’d be able to sneak out and go flying. They were both fans of Quidditch and had discussed playing once they attended school. It would be the most fun if they could both get on the team. "Cissy, could you put my hair up?"
"Of course," ignoring the unladylike snorting of the dark one, she reached for white ribbon. What she wouldn’t give for the same thickness to her hair. At least she hadn’t ended up with the same type of hair as the elder two. Hers was almost too straight, unlike Ginerva that had just enough wave to make it appear full and healthy. Why couldn’t she have Luna’s bouncing blonde hair? Perhaps if she had that type of hair then Lucius would play with hers as he seemed to always be doing whenever his own sibling was around. "Make sure you don’t lose it when you and Luna sneak off to go flying later."
She hated going shopping with just her mother! Luna rolled her eyes as the woman measuring her wrist clucked her tongue in a knowing manner. Just another idiot to complain about her dainty bone structure. ‘My Lady Malfoy, I understand but your daughter’s frame is much too small for the type of robes you are insisting upon ordering.’ The last two they had gone to had been rudely spoken down to before she was dragged to another. The last one her mum had sneered and called a filthy half-blood before gently escorting her out of the door. Luna didn’t care if they wanted to make her robes, she just wanted to go home and talk to Lucius again. They had been discussing the Quidditch team before the Owl had arrived with her acceptance letter to Hogwarts. Her mum had originally wanted her to attend some other school in France, she couldn’t remember the name of it, but those plans hadn’t gone through. Not after she had cried to both her father and brother about wanting to attend the same school as her best friend. Lucius had been the one to finally get her mum to accept that Luna wanted to remain close to home.
If she’d known that attending school would be this annoying she would have asked to remain stupid. Four hours had passed since they had begun this little shopping trip. Books had been the first thing on the list. That part the blonde had enjoyed since she’d been able to pick out whatever books she wanted to read while her mum gathered up what she’d actually need for her classes. Once finished she had thrice as many for enjoyment as there were for her studies. Lady Malfoy had simply beamed and informed the plump lady helping them with their purchases that her daughter was exactly like her, sharp as a dagger and twice as deadly. The next part had been picking out her own owl. She had chosen a startling black owl with a tiny white star burst on his crown. With the promise of getting lunch, the eleven year old wanted nothing more than to go home.
"My my, such a delicate little frame. I can understand the difficulty you’ve encountered but have no worries, Lady Malfoy. I believe I will be able to outfit your Luna with the best robes we have to offer." Madam Jaceline nodded towards the awaiting woman that she dared not disappoint. It was true that getting the robes the way the woman wanted while dealing with such a petite figure would be a little more work but it’d be worth the extra time. The Malfoys always paid well for exceptional service and this meant the woman would continue to come back for the next six years while the girl was attending school. The family would always purchase new robes every year.
"Excellent, I knew you wouldn’t disappoint me. That filthy blood traitor had the nerve to question whether or not my daughter was of age to be attending school. To imply that I do NOT know the age of my own child! She is just inflamed with jealousy that my daughter is extremely beautiful and she was blessed with that troll of a girl."
"Precisely, I must say I’ve never encountered such fine skin. She has an astounding complexion, you must be very proud."
This was the part where Luna tuned out the noise. At one point hearing her mum boast about how proud she was would have made her happy. These were things she already knew. Instead, she let her mind wander what would happen once she arrived at school. There was little doubt as to what house she’d be sorted into. Her family was expecting her to get sorted into Slytherin. This she didn’t mind so much. If she didn’t get Slytherin then she wanted Ravenclaw since she liked to think that she could be really smart. Her brother told her all the time how smart she was. While she did want to be different she did want to remain close to Ginny. School would be no fun if she couldn’t be with her best friend.
They had plans. They were going to play Quidditch together, get thrown into detention together, get boyfriends at the same time, and then dump them at the same time. They were going to do everything together, even die. She’d already told her mum that whenever she got married she wouldn’t agree to it unless she could have a double wedding with Ginny. Her parents had laughed but said they were sure they could arrange something.
"Straighten your arms for me."
How much longer would this take? She was tired of being measured. They could have been done if there wasn’t anything besides school robes to worry about. Did she really need all the extra things her mum was ordering? Why would she need dress robes during first year? So there she stood moving limbs as instructed while the two women chatted happily about what colors she’d look best in. The next command was for her to tilt her chin to the left and upwards. The annoying tape was placed against her throat. Knowing better to move while her mum was supervising kept her normally curious tenancies from acting when the bell chimed announcing that someone else had joined them. In a way she wanted to turn around and tell the person to run while they still could. This robe maker wasn’t shy about using force in getting her measurements.
"Don’t wander off too far, you will be fitted or you will not be getting a new broom. Do you understand me, Sirius?"
"Yes, Mother." He understood plenty. What she was really saying is that if he didn’t behave he wouldn’t be getting his new broom or dinner tonight. If he was really bad then it would be without food for two days while he would be forced to sit in his room to contemplate on the appropriate behavior for a Black. Annoyed already with being forced to walk silently behind her for an hour already today he let his eyes roam the place to see what he could find to entertain himself. Maybe he could get away with setting something afire. That would put a damper on him getting fitted for new robes.
The first thing he noticed was that his Mother was already finding someone to speak to. It only took a brief glance to know why his parent would be so willing to strike up a conversation. The other woman was extremely pale, with hair that was pulled back so taut he was sure it would snap at the roots. The dress spoke of being well off, it not a little spoiled. Growing bored already he decided to check out the rest of the place. He walked around a row of materials hearing the distinct voices of others. He recognized Madam Jaceline’s nasally commands immediately. Whomever she was speaking to didn’t answer when he heard, "Turn around for me again."
Wanting to see who was being tortured, he snuck around figuring some other poor kid was being set up for robes. He stopped just as he rounded the yards of french lace spotting the long pale hair but nothing else. Whomever it was couldn’t be no more seven or eight. He assumed a girl because of the long hair and the pink dress but he also knew that some families didn’t care if the males wore it long. Yet, something inside told him this was definitely a girl. Both arms were raised and straight out with victim’s face looking down.
Figuring he was next to be prodded he walked forward to wait his turn and let his mind wander to what he would do once he arrived at school. So far all he heard at home was how proud his mother would be once he was accepted into Slytherin. How she wanted him to be at the top of the class. He wouldn’t be allowed to play Quidditch if he didn’t keep his grades up. If she so much as heard of him speaking to anyone that wasn’t befitting of the Blacks she’d see him punished. Why couldn’t he make his own friends? He didn’t really want to go into Slytherin, not after reading Hogwarts A History. He thought it’d be more fun to go into Gryffindor.
"I’ll be with you in a few moments, Lord Black."
Huh? Sirius was brought out of his musings by the sound of being addressed. He brought his eyes back up to the haggard woman that seemed to realize that he had arrived. He was sure his mother was still over there running her face hole. The first and only thing to catch his attention were startling light blue eyes that were looking right at him. Eyes that reminded him of the sky when it was early in the morning, when he was usually rolling over and wondering if he’d be able to sneak in another hour before being forced to attend breakfast with the family. Those eyes definitely belonged on a girl, a very pretty one at that too. It wasn’t until a few months ago that he had begun realizing that some girls were pretty and some weren’t. Being a Black male he had been instructed on how to categorize them. His mother had explained that as he got older he would become a man and like all men he would have unhealthy needs. As disgusting as these needs were she informed him that they would need to be met but because he was a Black he had to be careful on how he did it. The Great Lady Black had instructed him on all four categories. There was the first one; Girls he was never to touch under any circumstance. The ones that fell in this were: Mudbloods, Blood traitors and Muggles. The next category were girls that he could use to give him quick release but could NEVER date publicly. Under this category were: half-bloods or ugly purebloods. The third were girls that he’d be allowed to date as long as he didn’t try something stupid by marrying them or impregnating them. Naturally, these girls would have to be attractive and pureblooded. Then the last and the most important was the ONE. This was the girl his mother had informed him that he was already arranged to marry. Of course, he wasn’t allowed to touch her in an inappropriate manner. He was to respect her and treat her differently then all of the rest.
The list didn’t come to mind as he looked into the smiling face of the little girl watching him. She had righted herself to study him as well. Something told him she would have to be in a category all it’s own. Not only was she pretty but she didn’t appear to be real. The long hair cascaded down to the waist, framing a very sweet face. She looked like one of those angels he had once seen in a muggle book. His mother had beaten him with her cane when she had caught him with it but he had never forgotten the pictures inside. All this girl was missing were the wings. His stomach felt funny as she stepped down and walked towards him.
"Are you hear for school robes too?" Luna asked the boy that had joined them. He was taller than she was but most kids were. His hair was cropped to frame his face and fell to his shoulders but there was no attempt to keep the curl under control. The curls were small unlike her own large spiraling locks that took forever to brush through. Dark grey eyes were framed by thick eyelashes that belonged on a girl. Her stomach knotted when his mouth tilted on one side in an awkward smile. It wasn’t a perfect smile like her brother had been blessed with, it was more like a mischievous grin.
"Too? You’re here for school robes? You can’t be more than eight." Sirius said the first thing that came to mind. Standing directly in front of him the girl’s head barely reached the top of his shoulders. There was no way she was old enough to be attending any of the schools he knew of. Or was she being tutored? There were a few families that believed the best way to keep their children from mingling with the undesirables was to keep them away from the public. Now he wished he paid more attention to parents when they spoke to other families. Then he would know who she was.
"I’m eleven and I’ll be attending school next month. It’ll be my first year at Hogwarts." Luna informed him with the slightest amount of annoyance in her tone. Once again she was well aware of how short she was. She would rather be dainty than grow to be as big as a troll like the woman he had arrived with.
Eleven? This girl was the same as he? Didn’t her family feed her? Or had she been a victim of a freak shrinking potion? She’d get ran over in the halls. Where would they give her to room, a closet? She was barely larger than a house elf. "No way! You can’t go to school. You won’t even be able to board the train. I doubt you could reach the steps."
"Then I’ll just have to stun you and use your head as an extra step. What time will you be arriving at the platform?" She crossed her arms to show that she meant the threat. She knew the rules about underage magic being performed outside of school. For this reason her brother had allowed her to use their mother’s wand during the lessons. She knew her own wand would be monitored once she began Hogwarts. It’d be nice to test out some of what she’d been taught once there, this arrogant git would be the perfect target. She was waiting for a snotty reply or a threat to counter her own. What she got was a deep snicker that eventually broke into soft laughter.
‘I know who to run to if I ever get bullied.’ He tried again. "So, you’re a first year? It’s my first year as well." Sirius was glad when the smile returned. The scowl had been hilarious but cute. Someone had a temper. Would she be like one of those firecrackers he heard about? They were supposed to be small but loud and dangerous when set off. Besides, she was too cute to be angry with. "Sirius Black, and you are?"
"Luna, Luna Malfoy, a pleasure to meet you." She held out her hand as she had seen her brother do on many occasions when meeting someone new. Instead of reaching out to shake her palm, the boy gently took a hold of the edge of her fingers then proceeded to kiss her knuckles. Heat rushed to her cheeks at the greetings. She’d seen a few men greet her mum this way but her mum was a grown up. Having someone greet her like she was already a lady was unexpected.
A Malfoy? That’s right, the pinched face horse lady standing by the troll had been introduced to him last year during some event his mother had thrown. He’d been told that they had a daughter but she was still too young to attend. Not like they had let him stay up late enough to have any fun. "Now that we are friends I’ll help you if you need help getting onto the train. We’ll save the stuns for people we don’t like."
"What makes you so sure I’m not going to dislike you?" She smiled as she asked. She wouldn’t really hex him on the train. Her brother would be watching her closely for the first few weeks. As soon as she knew Lucius wouldn’t be babysitting then she’d be able to practice a few spells. Nothing too bad, just a few nasty hexes and stronger stuns that would grant a few hours of freedom from those she didn’t like. Seeing as she considered herself a happy person, she didn’t see herself stunning that often.
"Cause I’m very likable." Sirius could hear his mother’s voice rising as she laughed at something being said. Probably discussing getting someone fired or beheading their house elf. "Have you gotten your books? What house do you want to be in? And do you like Quidditch?"
Luna noticed that her mum didn’t seem to be in a hurry to finish her own conversation. She had heard of the Black family, of course. Seeing as her best friend was one and Lucius was about to marry one. The problem with being a girl is that she didn’t get to mingle much with other families. It was unbefitting of someone of status to run amuck like some muggle child. Even her play dates with Ginny had always been scheduled. There had been a few events her brother had been allowed to attend to meet others but she was always too young."You must be related to my best friend. Her name is Ginerva but I call her Ginny."
He nodded in confirmation. He’d met his cousin on three occasions already. Not wanting to point out that he had found this cousin to be loud, annoying and a brat, he took in her appearance. The girl also had a small mouth and a tiny nose. The only thing that appeared to be of normal size were her eyes but in contrast to her other features it made them to seem too large for her face.
"We’ve gotten everything except my robes. I adore Quidditch. My brother is a Seeker for his team. He’s also in his sixth year and has been made a Prefect." Luna could swear she saw the sparks go off in his eyes when she mentioned she loved Quidditch. "He’s in Slytherin. I’m sure that’s where I’ll be place as well."
"Do you want to be in Slytherin?" That was a minus. He tried not to frown hearing it. It was something he’d already known. The Blacks and the Malfoys were always placed in Slytherin. It was something he was expecting to happen once that hat was placed upon his head. He didn’t really want to go into that house. Hufflepuff would be better than that cold dungeon. He fully expected the girl to get offended at his next comment but he wanted to be honest for some reason. "I think I’d rather be in Gryffindor."
"You seem the type. After all, it had to take a lot of courage to remark upon my being short. The last boy that called me a goblin I hit in the back with my father’s walking stick." The young Black laughed as she retold how she’d went along with her father to the Ministry only to run into the Goyle family. Being upset that she wouldn’t be able to play with Ginny that day she had lost her temper having the ugly boy taunt her about her height to make himself feel better about his face. She’d been scolded and locked in her room for two weeks after that display.
Sirius could imagine her trying to strike a Goyle. The family was known for bearing large and unsightly sons. It must have been a sight to witness. The girl had even been smart enough to wait for the lug to turn his back before striking. Was it smart or simple cunning? "Don’t be too shocked if you end up in Slytherin along with your brother. That was rather nasty of you. You’ll fit right in with them."
She knew he wasn’t trying to be mean by pointing out something she had already figured out herself. Her own father had told her that it had been genius of her to wait until the boy was distracted to get her revenge. It had been devious but sometimes you couldn’t play fair if you wanted to win. "Probably but I’ll be just as happy if I get into Ravenclaw. I know my family has a tradition of going into Slytherin but I wouldn’t mind Ravenclaw. I’m addicted to learning and all my tutors have informed me that I’m remarkably intelligent. I don’t think I could ever be in Gryffindor though. I don’t think I have the qualifications to be considered courageous."
"I think you’d do just fine." He liked her. She had scored an extra ten points just by getting one up on Goyle. There was a large part of him that was happy that she hadn’t immediately talked down to him after learning that he would rather be placed in a different house. If his mother heard him she’d rant and whip him until he remembered who he was. Thinking of the hag brought her.
"Ah, it’s a pleasure to see you again Luna." Walburga took in the little girl. It was just as well that Luna wouldn’t grow to be as tall as the mother. She didn’t want her son to be dwarfed by his own wife. What mattered was the girl was of good stock and very beautiful. It would be an honor to welcome the girl into the Black family once the two were out of school. "You’re growing up to be very beautiful. I see that you’ve finally met Sirius. I hope that you have been behaving yourself appropriately, Son."
"Well, I hate to be rude but Abraxas and Lucius will be waiting on us by now. Perhaps we should arrange a dinner during the holidays."
Luna didn’t stop to wonder why their mothers would wish to do something as formal as a dinner during the holidays. Her eyes were watching the smirk playing on her company’s mouth as he scratched behind his neck to pull on the tie. She’d be willing to bet her dessert that he’d have it removed before the end of his session. Before she could think of anything else to say her hand was being grabbed once more. It was time to finish their shopping because she knew that her father would be work until tonight and Lucius had mentioned visiting some friends. As she was pulled towards the exit she cast one last look towards Sirius. She returned the grin timidly while wondering if she would see him before boarding that train or would she have to wait until after they were sorted before speaking to him again.
