A/N: Not as long as the first chapter but then again, the first chapter wasn't supposed to be as long as it ended up being. Anyway, enjoy and please review. I would like to see if people are at all curious or enjoying the story. I know Draco isn't usually the one being sent back in time, so I'm curious as to what you think. Enjoy!
Zac just stared at him blankly for a moment. Draco had just gotten done explaining his current predicament. It had taken an hour and only Draco’s lack of strength kept him from pacing back and forth in agitation. “How long have you been completely daft?” Zac asked after several silent moments. Draco glared at the other boy who held up his hands in defense. “Well, I’m sorry but you do seem right off your broom. I mean… I know magic can do some wondrous things but… you’re talking about something I’ve never even heard of…”
Draco huffed in agitation. “I know how crazy it sounds alright! But that’s what happened unless you’re going to come clean and tell me this is all one terrible joke!” he said, glaring at the darker boy even more than before.
“It’s not. I told you the truth…” Zac said softly. He bit his lower lip as he thought. “You said the room was full of different things?” he asked slowly. Draco nodded, not sure where the boy’s mind was wandering. “Perhaps there was something in the room that reacted when it was destroyed… there’s a wizard that’s recently made something called a Time Turner… apparently that sends people back in time.”
“I would have recognized a Time Turner in there,” Draco said. “I know what they look like. And it wouldn’t have sent me back this far… I’ve only heard it sending people back a couple days at the most before.”
Zac worried his lip even more. Finally, he sighed and looked back up with a slight smile. “We need to go to the library, I think,” he said as he got to his feet and held out a hand to help Draco up as well.
Draco raised an eyebrow but took the other boy’s slender hand. “You think a library will have the sort of information we need?” he asked, somewhat skeptical at the prospect. What chance did a thousand year old library have of telling him how to reverse something that happened in that fire?
Zac smiled a bit wider. “It’s never let me down before,” he said. “Mind you whatever we find is going to be pretty theoretical still but I suppose that’s better than nothing… unless you want to stay here and just wait for a thousand years.” Draco gave the boy a dull stare as he got unsteadily to his feet. “Thought not,” Zac said, wrapping an arm around the blonde to help support him.
The Malfoy Heir couldn’t help but notice that Zac was stronger than he looked. The thin arm around his waist was like a band of iron and the brunette didn’t seem to have any trouble walking under the weight of the slightly taller and broader body leaning on him. From this close, Draco could see every slight blemish on Zac’s face (not that there were that many) a few faded freckles and a single dark brown spot right at the end of his right eyebrow. There was also a small scar on the corner of Zac’s bottom lip that made Draco wonder how the boy had even gotten it. Zac didn’t seem the type to get into scuffles with other boys.
Zac led them back to his door, much to Draco’s confusion. “Aren’t we going to the library?” Draco asked.
“Yes,” Zac replied as he pulled a thick iron key out of the pockets of his robe. Draco just continued to stare as Zac put the key in the lock and turned it. The key clicked once, twice, and a third time before Zac opened the door again. Draco’s eyes widened in surprise at the very different room on the other side of the door. Shelves and shelves far into the distance that went up higher than the door all jam-packed with books and scrolls. “Here we are. The Grand Library.”
Draco’s mouth dropped open as Zac helped him inside and then into a nearby chair. This library was even bigger than the one at Hogwarts. He just knew Granger would have lost herself in here and never be heard from again. “Just… just how big is this place?” he asked in amazement.
Zac hummed a bit and seemed to think. “Oh, I’d say about a mile long and a story and a half high,” he said after a moment. “Maybe a touch smaller actually… though to be fair I don’t think anyone’s measured it since it was built. It’s underground you know.”
“Underground?” Draco echoed, staring at the large stained glass windows. He figured they must be enchanted like the windows at the Ministry.
Zac followed his line of sight and smiled. “Oh, yes, the windows are misleading. They were a graduating project from one of the other students a couple years ahead of me. Everyone has to do something special before they can graduate. Not sure what I’m going to do yet… I was thinking making a potion that can let you become someone else. Nobody’s ever done something like that before.”
Draco blinked and opened his mouth to tell the boy someone had already done that but then he abruptly shut up. How was he to know if Zac wasn’t the one to come up with Polyjuice Potion? Mentally he cursed the situation. He had heard plenty about idiot wizards stopping themselves from being born just by interfering too much. He just knew that changing the past in this case was bad and anything he said could possibly do terrible damage. It was going to be very hard to not interfere too much.
Zac gave him a curious look before turning back to the table they had claimed. “Well, I think it’d be best if I got some books and you just sat here and read through them. It’ll be faster.”
“Sounds fine to me,” Draco agreed, not really wanting to wander around the library anyway. It wasn’t as if he had any idea where anything was.
The brunette gave Draco a smile before disappearing into the stacks. Draco sighed and sat back as he waited. It was a bit unnerving to be in such a huge library with only one other person. It was incredibly silent and oddly creepy despite it being comfortably furnished, clean, and fairly bright.
Draco jumped in his seat when a huge pile of books slammed onto the table beside him. “Oh… sorry, Draco. Didn’t mean to give you a fright,” Zac said with a small smile. “I thought we could start here with the newest books.”
“How did you find these so fast?” he asked, somewhat surprised that it had only taken Zac a few minutes to find ten different heavy books.
Zac shrugged a bit. “I spend a lot of time here. Since all I can do is make potions… I’m always trying to see if I can find a way to do what wizards can with only my potions. I’ve gotten pretty good at making up new ones. I just managed one that will let me travel long distances without a broom… of course, I need to know where I’m going but it still works.”
“Impressive,” Draco commented. Coming up with one new potion was better than most could hope to achieve doing it multiple times was down right brilliant.
The brunette beamed. “Well, my teachers do say I’m a genius. They also say it’s a pity I can’t do magic but… well, I can’t change what is…” he said, going rather soft near the end.
Draco didn’t like the sadness that crossed the other boy’s face. “You’d have made a brilliant wizard, Zac,” he stated. Zac looked surprised for a moment before smiling a little.
“Thank you. I’m glad you think so,” he said softly. “Let’s get started, shall we?”
Draco glanced at the pile of books warily but nodded. “Sooner we do the sooner I can get out of here,” he muttered. It might be true but he wasn’t exactly excited to have to do it. Studying wasn’t actually something he enjoyed. Especially since he didn’t have to do it all that often. Most of the time he could skate through without really studying all that hard.
It soon became apparent to Draco that finding an answer was going to be more difficult than he thought. Just reading the opening of the book in front of him had given him a headache and he was finding he still didn’t understand what the bloody hell it was talking about. His grey eyes darted over to the other boy and he frowned a little to see him fully absorbed in what he was reading, not seemingly confused at all. Figured he’d end up with another Granger on his hands. At least this one was nicer to look at, Draco thought.
Zac was definitely closer to his type. Draco eyed the other boy’s well-kept shiny dark hair and dark intelligent eyes. His skin was a bit pale but not in a way that made it look unhealthy, just underexposed to the sun. But then, if he spent most of his time in an underground library that was understandable. Draco’s eyes moved down to Zac’s hands, the only other part of the boy exposed, and smiled some at how delicate they looked; an aristocrat’s hands even though the boy was a mudblood. There wasn’t a single scar on his hands and his nails were neatly trimmed.
“You’re looking at me,” Zac said without looking up from his reading.
“You’re nice to look at,” Draco replied simply, his eyes moving back up to Zac’s face.
Zac looked over and raised an eyebrow. “Are you flirting with me?” he asked, seemingly confused.
Draco smirked. “Trust me, Zacchaeus… if and when I flirt with you… you’ll know it,” he said.
Zac frowned a little and turned back to his book. “Don’t call me Zacchaeus…” he muttered though Draco smirked at the slight pink tinge that crossed the boy’s cheeks. Delighted to have gotten a reaction like that, Draco turned back to trying to decipher his own book.
