Chapter Two - Sweet Dreams
Severus checked the wards on his room, changed into a pair of slightly worn pajamas and climbed into bed. He was thankful that Dumbledore had discretely arranged for him to not have a roommate this term, though rumors hinted that Severus had used dark magic to accomplish the task himself. The truth was the headmaster understood he needed time to himself to deal with the constant torment of Potter and company.
Severus had little patience for idiocy and admittedly, his issues with Potter tended to spill over onto anyone with the misfortune of crossing his path immediately following a run in with the arrogant git. As a result, most students steered clear of him whenever possible as a means of self-preservation
The solitude helped him control his anger to some extent. Dumbedore’s strategy proved effective, as Madame Pomfrey no longer complained about being inundated with inexplicably hexed students in her infirmary.
After the events of the night, Severus definitely needed to be alone.
He generally enjoyed Slughorn’s little “Slug Club” gatherings, primarily because the debates were lively, Lily was there and none of Potter’s cohorts were included in the group. Tonight, however, he found the conversations tedious and annoying.
The evening centered on the fact that Lily, Potter and Sirius Black were among the few who had extended personal dialogues with Lord and Lady Avonleigh during their brief visit two days earlier. Slughorn seemed intent on gleaning every detail. He even hinted that the decision might be determined based on those personal interactions.
The only criteria for eligibility that was mentioned was that the student would be selected from the current sixth years. Severus thought the choice would be made on academic standings and therefore he felt he would at least be considered based on that.
It never occurred to him that other factors, perhaps even personal or political ones, would influence the final decision. He knew that would put him at a distinct disadvantage.
While Severus had spoken with Ella in several classes throughout the day, he had sought the solitude of the potions lab and his books between classes, instead of playing sycophant to her parents. Other than a brief personal introduction by Dumbledore before lunch, at which time Severus listened intently to what they said, he had little interaction with them otherwise.
He realized now, that was probably a mistake.
Hearing Slughorn drone on endlessly about the attributes the Avonleighs would likely be looking for, only added to his consternation.
“Of course they’ll want someone with outstanding academic achievements, but character, personality, family and social skills must also be taken into account,” Slughorn said during dessert. “After all, this student will be spending a tremendous amount of time with their daughter. They will no doubt want to ensure that her experience is a positive one and that the student they choose will be exemplary. Of course, the last Hogwarts student who was given the honor of studying at Avalon was Merlin, who is not only the most famous wizard in history, but also, I’m proud to say, a member of Slytherin House. Unfortunately, Avalon has a reputation of neutrality in all things. As much as it pains me to say this, the other houses might have an advantage this go around, simply because they don’t wish to appear biased toward Slytherin…”
Severus sighed heavily, turned on his side and drew the covers up around his shoulders. The realization of how much he wanted to be the one chosen to study at Avalon came along with the realization that his chances of actually doing so were less than stellar.
He hoped that Lily would be chosen if he were not, knowing she would truly appreciate the opportunity to learn things that no other witch or wizard in their lifetimes would know. Black or Potter would concern themselves only with the bragging rights and piss off the academic responsibilities completely.
“Bloody arrogant fools,” Severus thought angrily. “One of them will probably be picked because of their pure-blood status and their family names. They don’t deserve it and they don’t deserve her. Ella is an extraordinarily talented witch and certainly deserves better than to waste her time studying with a wizard whose magical acumen is grossly inferior to her own…”
The entire school was still abuzz with talk of the young witch. In fact, every conversation referred back to something she’d said or done during her visit. It was all positive with the exception of a few witches who were put off because their wizards couldn’t stop praising her.
Then of course, there were the rather crude comments the fifth, sixth and seventh year wizards made privately about her physical attributes. Those were the remarks which finally drove Severus from the Slytherin common room earlier to prevent himself from sending half his house to the aforementioned Madame Pomfrey for treatment.
“Humpf…” Severus scowled and flipped to his other side, trying to get comfortable, and shake off the sudden urge to go back to the common room and hex someone.
She was attractive, there was no point in denying it, but appearances can be very deceiving. He had to admit that he was guilty of judging her too quickly. His first impression was that she was a silly, spoiled girl whose only thoughts were of herself and her wardrobe.
As the day had progressed, he found that despite her outward appearance, Ella Avonleigh was intelligent, sincere, unpretentious and an incredibly powerful witch. From what he’d witnessed, she could likely rival any witch or wizard alive, including Dumbledore.
Severus reminded himself again that it was her magic that intrigued him and nothing more.
It annoyed him that the other students did not see instantly how extraordinarily gifted she was. When she was in the room, he could feel her magic crackling around her. How no one else seemed to even notice was beyond his comprehension.
“Idiots! The lot of them,” he thought, finding it ironic that they did manage to comment on her unusual golden eyes, lovely long hair and flawless skin.
Severus’ mood grew darker recalling the leering gazes of his male classmates as they watched the swell of her breasts when she laughed and the sway of her hips when she walked. He had resisted the urge to curse the more blatant offenders, but not without great effort on his part.
Severus sat up in bed and pounded his pillow before flopping back down. He glanced at the clock. It wasn’t late, but he had an early morning meeting with Dumbledore to finally discuss a summer internship. It may not be the Avalon apprenticeship, but it was certainly better than spending the summer at Spinner’s End.
“Avalon,” Severus thought as he closed his eyes and let his mind drift. Somewhere on the edge of sleep he saw golden eyes looking back at him. “Ella…”
****
Severus heard her sigh and felt her snuggle back tighter against him as she slept. Her head rested just beneath his chin and her hair was woven in a long, loose braid that draped forward and partially concealed her breasts. His arm lay casually across her hip, his hand resting along her naked thigh.
His morning erection twitched against the soft curve of her buttocks and he pressed closer to her warmth. He kissed the top of her head, enjoying the faint scent of sandalwood and lavender.
“This feels nice, Severus,” she murmured. “What time do you have to get up?”
“Too early,” he replied softly, slowing rousing from his dream. “I have an appointm—“
His eyes snapped open and he sat up, automatically reaching beneath his pillow for his wand.
“It’s on the table next to the bed,” she said without opening her eyes. “I didn’t want to be hexed, accidentally or otherwise when you woke and found me here.”
“Ella?” Severus looked around and saw he was in his room and tried desperately to determine whether it was real or if he was still dreaming. He reached out to touch the peacefully resting witch lying in his bed. He jerked back when he felt warm, solid flesh beneath his fingertips. “Merlin’s beard, Ella! You are here and you’re…naked. Why? How?”
