Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter, nor any of the characters from the books or movies. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
AN: Wow! Emotions are running on high for this one. I think it best if I diffuse a hostile situation, from the get go. Okay, there are many people who have strong reactions to the way that characters act in the stories they read. I, for one, am quite fixedly a Twit-light hater, so don't get me started on that. I understand that there are two trains of thought on the whole 'Ginny/Harry Pairing' issue, and I don't mean to set anyone on defense. I am not writing a Ginny bashing fic here, nor do I condone or agree with what was attributed to her in the canon.
This story is after all that, and I'm not going to try to rationalize their early relationship, nor dismantle it. I'm making a fresh start and establishing the way that they can, if necessary, get out of it. Ginny will be portrayed as human, and I will allot her a genuine reason for her actions and words. Please, don't jump to conclusions about my plans, or try to coax me down a Ginny hating trail. I've got this planned out, and I have a special treat in store for all, if I can just keep to a schedule.
I am also working on the final two chapters of 'How Do You Like It' and a few more installments to 'The Auror and The Fountain' so be patient with me. I'm older than most of you, and I am trying to finish my degree, so that takes a lot out of a person. Plus, there's that whole job thing and working on my books.
Love Always, ANNA
Janna: Let's just see what I have coming, shall we?
Kain: Self-righteousness is a two edged sword. Look at the Spanish Inquisition and the Salem Witch trials.
Thrnbrooke: I know I've succeeded when you have joined my reviewers.
Nekluvshp: I wouldn't classify Ginny as the 'Bad-guy'. I'm leaning more toward a innocent victim of society. Kind of like the people who are supporting Romney/Ryan in the current US battle for President. Being a member of the 47%, and of questionable sexual orientation, I can't believe anyone would go along with that rubbish, but we shall see. . .
Chapter Two: Letters of Love
Harry woke to find two owls waiting in the living room, both glaring at him for sleeping late. He took their letters, fed them treats and poured himself a cup of coffee, to drink while he read. The first letter, from Albus, was clear and distinct:
Dad,I made a new friend, right on the train. We have a lot in common, and I think we'll be best friends throughout school.
We were sorted into Slytherin, and it's not so bad. We've got comfy beds, another bloke in our dorm, and there were some girls, too.
My new friend's name is Scorpius and his dad sounds like a real smart guy. James looked angry, but you said it didn't matter what house I got, so I'm gonna be glad. Give Mum and Lily a hug from me,
Love Albus.
Harry read this over twice, more shocked by the name of his son's new friend than the house he was sorted to. He put the letter aside and opened the one from James.Dad,Albus needs help. He's gotten stuck in the snake pit. You should contact the Headmistress and get him out.
He still has time, since it takes a few days for that lot to ruin a kid, but don't delay too long. I'll do what I can to keep him from going dark, but this is a bad start.
Tell Mom for me, so she can do something, too.
Love to Lily,
Your Son, James Sirius Potter.
Harry sighed, putting the letter on top of the one from Albus and pulling out a few fresh sheets of paper. He started with a response to his younger son,Dear Albus,I am very proud of you. You have made a great start in your schooling and shown maturity in your decisions. Your new friends sounds fine, but I was curious who his dad is, and what his connection to the war might have been.
Don't worry about James, I'll write him to lay off. Study hard and listen to your professors. We love you,
Dad.
He followed this with a letter to James.James,Leave your brother and his friends alone. His sorting is not a problem and will not turn him dark. Slytherin is a fine house and he will do well there.
I will tell your mother, but we will not interfere in the school's policy with regards to sorting.
Work hard on your studies and keep an eye on Rose.
Love, Dad
He sent these off, then went to see about breakfast with his two ladies.Ginny was livid, her face flushed nearly as red as Lily's hair ribbons. "He's where? My baby can't be a Slytherin!""Ginny, please." Harry said, looking down to where their daughter watched from across the table.
"How can you be so calm?"
"I'm calm, because it doesn't matter."
"Doesn't matter? It does matter!"
"No, it doesn't. Albus is going to school to learn. He'll learn just as well in Slytherin as in any other house. They take the same classes and have the same teachers. In fact, he's already made a friend in his house that is helping him to feel more confortable there."
"A new friend? Is he a snake?"
"Yes. They were sorted together," Harry said but he swallowed the words that tried to follow.
"Who?" her eyes narrowed and Harry swallowed again.
"Who?"
"Who is this new friend?" Ginny leaned over and glared.
"He said the boy's name is Scorpius, but he didn't give me his last name."
"Scorpius is a Black name, Harry. It's got to be Malfoy's spawn. I knew I should have written them sooner. I'll bet Malfoy sent him to get close to our son, so that they can get you on their side."
"And what, Ginny? What could I do for them?"
"They want you to change to rules. To give them back control."
"I couldn't do that! I don't have that kind of power! Everyone knows that, Ginny. Don't be stupid."
"Did you just call me Stupid? I can't believe you're taking Malfoy's side over mine!"
"And I can't believe that you are arguing for Pure-blood abuse!"
"Oooh!" Ginny rose and stormed out of the room, leaving Harry glaring after her.
"Daddy? What's pure-blood abuse?" Lily asked from his elbow. "And why does Mommy hate that man whose son is Al's friend?"
"In the war, Lily, the pure-bloods wanted to restrict muggleborns from participating in the wizarding world. The Malfoys, especially Lucius, were very vocal and participated on the side of the Dark Lord." Harry had given up trying to desensitize people by using Tom Riddle's chosen name.
"So, Albus' friend is the some kind of a death-eater-scum?" the way Lily said this was filled with such innocence that Harry felt a pang in his heart.
"No, Honey. If Albus' friend is the son of Draco Malfoy, his father has paid for his crimes, and is working hard to be a good citizen. It's pure-blood abuse to call him that name and make his life harder than it has to be. We need to put the hatred that the war brought us aside and start making an effort to bring pure-blood, half-blood and muggleborns together, and all this anger isn't helping. Albus has made the right choice."
"Oh." Lily said, then reached out and hugged her daddy. "I'll make the right choice, too."
"I know you will, Princess. Now, how about you go and write a nice letter to your brothers?" he suggested and his daughter nodded and climbed down from her chair to hurry off to her little desk in her room.
Since school had started on Saturday, the new first years had an extra day to prepare for classes. Professors Brown, Montague, Flitwick and Finch-Fletchley all suggested that the prefects in their houses show the new members around the school. Scorpius, Albus and Nate followed LeGrande to the astronomy tower, the owlry and the care of Magical Creatures teacher's hut on the grounds near the forbidden forest.
At the same time, Alicia, Laura and Marris were taken along a different route, to Transfigurations, the green house and the potions lab, by Kellie Michaels, the sixth year's female prefect for Slytherin.
At lunch, Scorpius had seen the mail arrive by a flock of owls, swooping into the room and aiming in various directions. Both James and Albus recieved a letter and a small package and Scorpius watched his friend tear open the box to find some Bertie Botts Every flavor Beans inside. "We can share these tonight. Did you get anything?" Albus asked just as a non-descript owl floated down and deposited an envelope in the blond's hands.
"Just a letter." he said and they both chuckled as they opened their mail.
Dearest Scorpius,I've just heard about your sorting and I wanted to send you my regards. I know you were concerned about the possibility of being placed in my old house, and I hope you will resign yourself to your situation and do your best to make your way within the house of Slytherin.
Have you made any connections? Be careful about those who might befriend you for the wrong reasons.
Your mother sends her best and says she is proud of you, too.
We will try to send you a package of treats when the week is over and I receive my compensation.
Study hard and do well, you are my one hope.
Love and hugs,
Your father, Draco Malfoy
The boy smiled and leaned over to show his note to Albus, who traded back the letter his dad had sent."Why do they always ask me about the war?" Albus said and the blond looked up from the page. "Even my dad. He asks about the war, like it says everything about everyone to him. Your dad didn't mention the ol' war. I'm not gonna tell him anything about your dad, so don't tell me, okay?"
"O-kay." Scorpius said.
"Your dad seems cool. He really loves you, you know?"
"Yeah. I know." Scorpius leaned closer and spoke softly, "He pretends, but I know. I know that we have very little money. I know that he isn't allowed to do the work that could earn him more because he's not allowed to use much magic. I think that was because of the war, too."
Albus turned abruptly and stared at his dormmate. Marris Edgecombe looked up cautiously and whispered, "It's true. My parents lost everything and they weren't even death eaters. My grandad was, so they tried them that way. They took all of our money and most of our properties. It's only because our six house elves stayed loyal that we can even survive."
"How's that?" Albus asked.
"The Ministry can't monitor house elf magic. They keep us cared for, make potions we need and support our wards. My mum and dad both work hard, but they don't make much. The elves make what they can afford seem so much better."
"Do you have elves, Scorpius?" the blond shook his head and Albus sighed. "I wonder what happened to them. I bet your dad did. He sounds like someone who did."
"You really think so? He never seems to have trouble doing things without magic. If he grew up with house elves, how would he learn to do so much for himself?"
"I don't know. He must be real smart." Albus suggested.
"Yes, he is. I've heard him talking to my mother about ways that his boss could make more money. About how the laws that the Ministry is considering will effect everyone and about ways that he thinks potions could be improved. My mother says he was very talented at potions when he was here, but he isn't allowed to brew now."
"I bet my dad could find out where your dad's elves are, but I don't think I can ask him without telling him stuff that's private."
"I'll ask my father. Don't bother yours with it. How did your family keep their elves, Mare? Didn't the Ministry try to take them?"
"I don't know for sure. I could ask. I'll try."
After lunch, the three boys toured the potions lab, the grounds and the quidditch pitch. LeGrande had a practice and the boys were more than willing to forgo any classrooms in exchange for watching their team play. It was a great end to the first weekend.
