The war had at last come to its prophesied end: One could not live, while the other survived. Clearly it was the Dark Lord who was merely surviving, while The Boy Who Lived was struggling to maintain that state. At least that's the drivel The Prophet was spewing this morning in its special One Year Anniversary Edition of The End of the War. Lip curling at such pathetic rubbish, Severus tossed the rag disguised as a reputable source of information into the fire merrily burning in the grate of his suite deep in the heart of the Hogwarts dungeons. As he turned away from the fire, he also attempted to turn his mind from the truth of those last dark hours under the reign of Lord Voldemort. His hand unconsciously covering the spot where the faded Dark Mark still blemished his skin, Severus swept from his apartment to attend breakfast in the Great Hall.
"Disgusting. If Potter is willing to accept all their accolades, can he not at least set the story straight?" came an irritated voice joining him from a corridor that led to the Slytherin dormitories.
"Ahhh... Draco, come to escort me to breakfast?" Thin lips trying determinedly not to pull into a smile at the sight of the perfectly coifed, perfectly frustrated young snake before him.
Shoulders squaring, Draco quickly met the eyes of the man he was currently walking quickly down the hallway with. "Certainly sir, we who know the truth must stick together in the face of the Potter Sycophants. Can't let Potter get too big of a head now can we, sir?"
At the slight pain he saw in his Godson's eyes, Severus understood the truth of Draco's company this morning and returned Draco's question with a smirk. "No, that would not be advisable for Mister Potter. We must seek to prevent this at all costs." An answering smirk met his and an "Of course, Professor." were the last words they were able to exchange before reaching the Great Hall already overflowing with celebrations of Voldemort's death.
As Severus Snape and Draco Malfoy entered the hall, the celebrations began to subside slightly as glares were focused their direction from all ends of the room. From the Gryffindors, Hufflepuffs, and Ravenclaws for being Death Eaters and from the Slytherins for not being Death Eaters. Among them all there was only one whose head did not turn nor look up from his breakfast. Only one who did not hiss or whisper. Only one Harry Potter.
Severus felt Draco falter slightly under the combined displeasure of his peers. The boy had always cared far to much about his social standing. An unfortunate defect of being a Malfoy, he supposed. To bolster Draco's wavering confidence, Severus decided a display of power was necessary. "Weasley! Longbottom!" he barked "Unless you wish to scrub cauldrons for a month, I suggest you resume your seats and cease your unmannerly behavior at breakfast! That applies to all of the rest of you as well!" That seemed to do the trick as Draco neatly resumed his stride toward the hostile but now subdued table of snakes. However, what was disturbing Severus now had nothing to do with his Godson and everything to do with the lack of reaction he was observing from Harry Potter. Surely the boy would be spitting nails by now for Severus's daring to yell at his housemates, but there was nothing, not so much as a twitch. Hell, the boy wasn't even eating, just sitting silently with his head down staring at his plate. It was uncanny. Severus had never witnessed such a stillness in Potter. The boy was practically motion in a human form.
Frowning, Severus took his seat to the left of the Headmistress as befitted his station as Deputy Headmaster. Hopefully the rest of the day would be better than this so far unspectacular morning. Minerva McGonagall rose from her chair in the center of the table, perhaps his day would be improving after all.
"Your attention, please!" rang out McGonagall's old but strong voice. "Due to nature of the history of this day's date, I have decided to suspend classes in favor of a celebratory free day. There has been no official party planned; however, knowing the nature of a few of our students, I am quite certain that this will pose no problem for entertainment options. Please keep in mind the school rules and be aware that students 5th year and up are welcome to go to Hogsmeade to celebrate as well! That is all." As Minerva resumed her seat, Severus was able to witness the chaos her words had caused among the student populace. Cheers were called and several more enthusiastic students were jigging down the aisles between the tables. Complete pandemonium. It was just as well though, with all the pent up energy in the room, the students would have been useless at classes anyway. In the commotion, it was easy to miss the hero of the day slipping out of the doors into the Hogwarts grounds.
As Harry walked around the lake, he couldn't help seeing the ghosts of battles past. Here a friend had died, there he had nearly been kissed by a dementor in third year, in the lake itself he had nearly died trying to save people who didn't even need to be saved. He snorted, "Such bloody useless things, memories" and resumed his walk. If he could only be rid of the bad ones, maybe it wouldn't be so hard to be here at Hogwarts anymore, but who was he kidding? If he lost his bad memories, he'd scarcely have anything left to remember of this place. Nothing left... Harry step paused before he shook his head and kept walking, never knowing there was someone who heard and saw his every doubt.
Bloody Potter! What a git! What a dunce! What a... there was no sufficient word in Draco Malfoy's extensive mental dictionary of insults to describe what an utter bloody poncey moron Harry Potter was. He had everything! The fame, the accolades, the admiration of the masses, everything that Draco wanted, Harry Potter had and didn't apparently want by his slumped, defeated posture at the Gryffindor table. "What an insufferable, ..." he trailed off into mutters as his outburst once again brought the displeasure of his house down upon his aristocratic head. It simply wasn't fair. But at least Potter was content to ignore him instead of bring the full power of his censure (and thus the rest of the school's ire) down on him. He had dealt with the glares and mutterings of the other houses well enough, and he was attempting to deal with the betrayal of his own house in his own way. The more they tried to hurt him and ostracize him, the more he showed them his perfection and arrogance in a complete rejection that he had ever needed any of them. But if Potter stepped in, Draco shuddered to think of the reprisals that might come his way. However, since September, and the beginning of term, Potter had not, in fact, even acknowledged the existence of Draco Malfoy. Not a glare, nor an insult had come his way no matter how hard Draco had struggled to gain his attention. "It is singularly frustrating," Draco decided, "to be ignored."
Being too busy glaring at Potter, Draco missed much of the Headmistress' speech. He did, however, catch the bit about being free to go to Hogsmeade, and in the uproar following McGonagall's announcement was able to observe the object of his obsession slipping out of the Great Hall and into the Hogwarts grounds. Draco decided to follow. After all, there was always plenty of time to go to Hogsmeade after a good Potter Picking session.
