Chapter 2
Standing in Tom's office while the Healer and Narcissa did their work, the two men were arguing, glaring at each other as they did. The topic was the small bottles that almost covered the Dark Lord's desk, ones containing memories Tom had pulled from Harry. No, they weren't all filled with memories of sexual abuse at the hands of Snape, the rest were about the Dursley's, Dumbledore, Umbridge and others in his life. It was Tom's thought that they were going to need them at some point for something, so he grabbed them while he was in going after the multiple Obliviations he had found. No, he wasn't going to use anything without the young man's permission, but he thought it best to have them so he didn't have to go in again or put Harry through pulling them himself.
Arms folded over his chest, glaring at Lucius, Tom hissed, “I said no, Lucius! That's the final word on the topic!”
“I want to see what that greasy bastard did to Harry, Tom!” Lucius told him, tone aggravated.
“First, you need to ask Harry. These are his memories, so he has the right to say who views them. I know that because of your relationship with him, he would probably say yes, but you need to ask first. Secondly, you don't need to see that, Lucius! If you do, every time you look at him for quite a long while, that's all you're going to see. You and he, both, don't need that. This is going to be horrid enough as it is for him. What he won't need is you reacting to what you see! It's bad enough that you know what happened, you don't need to see it too!”
Starting to pace in front of the desk, the elder Malfoy glared at the Dark Lord, but said nothing. He could, of course, understand both those reasons. It didn't mean he liked it though! Finally, he said, “If I get Harry's permission, you will let me view them?”
“Yes, of course. I would caution against it, though. You, more than any of the rest of us, are going to need to be there for him. Because of that, you don't need to see what is contained in those memories and have it contaminate things. Leave it at just knowing. That, in and of itself, is bad enough,” Tom told him wearily.
Snorting, Lucius said nothing, thinking it over. He wasn't even sure if he wanted to approach Harry to ask to see them right now. Not with what his young man had just gone through. It was almost a certainty that Harry wouldn't react well to him asking.
“Lucius, this is bad. Trust me, it is. With me breaking the Obliviations, he's going to have to deal with more than just the one tonight. He doesn't need you to see them then deal with your reactions, when it comes to both him and Snape, over it. Just leave it. Knowing is bad enough, seeing will be worse.” Tom told him softly, hoping that would get through the wall of anger than his chief lieutenant was dealing with.
Stopping, he stood in front of Tom's desk and looked at the man, crossing his arms over his chest. “Tell me this at least... how many times? How many times did it happen and how far back did it go?”
Making sure he had ahold of his wand, Tom told Nagini to trip Lucius and hold him if he made for the door then said, tone wary, “There were a dozen of them that I could find. They go back to Harry's first year. All of them were successful Obliviations until the last one.”
“That rotten arsed pervert is a dead man!” Lucius hissed, eyes seeming to catch fire, his magic crackling around him. Turning, he was about to make for the door when Tom's voice stopped him.
“Stop right there, Lucius!” The Dark Lord told him, voice cold and firm, leveling his wand at him. “You put one hand on that doorknob and I'll put you in a full body bind until you see sense. Do you understand me?”
“You cannot tell me that you are going to let this go unpunished!” Lucius snapped, spinning back around to face Tom. “That... creature cannot be allowed to get away with this!”
“He won't,” Tom told him firmly, keeping his wand trained on Lucius. “Just sit down, Lucius. Try to calm down.”
Knowing Tom was serious, that he would no more than reach the door and he wouldn’t get any further, Lucius huffed then went to plop into a chair in front of the desk. Crossing his arms over his chest he glared at the Dark Lord and waited, saying nothing.
Telling Nagini to go curl up around Lucius, something that could help keep him in place if he tried to leave once more, Tom then seated himself on the edge of the desk on the front, facing the elder Malfoy. Looking at him he said, keeping his tone calm, “We will do something about Snape, you have my word on it. Right now, though, Harry comes first. We need to see how bad this is then discuss steps to keep him safe. Keeping him away from those that would try to get him back is part of that. That comes before revenge. Understand?”
Glaring at Tom, Lucius said nothing but gave the barest of nods.
Figuring that was as good as it was going to get there, Tom nodded back. Calling to one of the house elves, he told the creature to bring them some calming draught. When the elf reappeared, he had the creature give it to Lucius. Looking at the elder Malfoy, he said, tone firm, “Take it. There is much to discuss and work out tonight. I need you as clear as you can get to do so, not working off rage. That will only mess up things.”
Seeing the wisdom in that, knowing some fast, fancy footwork was going to be needed, Lucius downed the potion then waited. Oh, he still wanted to go exact revenge, but Tom was right; one of the things both of them had promised the young man in the other room was that they would take care of and protect him if he left. He couldn't do that if he went to exact revenge and landed himself in Azkaban over it. Oh, revenge would come, that he vowed, but other things needed to be tended to first. This was one of those times in one's life where, though you wanted to go with emotion and let that dictate your actions, Lucius couldn't allow that to happen. No, there was too much at stake here for him to do such a thing. Instead, he sighed then nodded, “You're right. We have much to work out.”
Giving a mental sigh of relief that he had gotten through to Lucius, Tom then told him, “First thing first; we need to figure out a way to make it to where the Ministry can't get their hands on him. We broke the Trace a couple years ago, so they can't use that. However, they have other means to do so, as you are well aware. We need to come up with something. As long as Harry is in the British Isles, they may be able to find him. It will take time, something that will aid us in coming up with a plan, but they can manage. As much as Fudge has it out for the young man, we need to do something, fast. And, right now, I have no idea what. He'll be protected here for a while, at least until we can come up with something, but we have to find something else. You know as well as I do, with Dumbledore looking for me, the chance we may be found is always there. No, he needs to be somewhere safer.”
“This is true,” Lucius told him with a weary nod. “First thing first... once the Healer is done, we cast every protection spell we know on him. It won't be a permanent thing, but it'll stave it off until we come up with something else.”
“Yes, that we'll do,” Tom nodded, glad that Lucius was finally getting with things and working on the real problem. “The main thing we are going to need is to ensure neither the Ministry nor Dumbledore can come up with something that will trace him to anywhere in Britain. Honestly, it's Dumbledore I'm more worried about. Fudge is inept on a good day. He is more apt to go for slandering and degrading Harry in the papers than tracing him. No, the old goat is the one to worry about.”
“You're right,” Lucius nodded. “He's the one to worry about when it comes to tracing things. However, we're going to have to dance fast to do something. Umbridge is going to try to expel Harry if he's gone too long. Though he won't be going back, the fact that it will basically put a lifetime ban on Harry using magic anywhere in Britain isn't something we need either. We have to come up with something to stave that off as well.”
“That wasn't something I had thought of,” Tom admitted, rubbing his chin. “Nor do I know a way to put a stop to that. We need to, though, quickly. I would guess that we have until the morning before anyone notices Harry is gone. He's a smart lad, I’m sure he did something to ensure his dorm-mates think he's there. Once breakfast hits and he doesn't show, or the first class of the day, then the alarm is going to be sounded. After that, there will be issues. We can keep him safe, but we need to come up with something to avoid the kind of catastrophic fallout that can come from this.”
Nodding, Lucius absently petted Nagini, relieved when she finally loosened her grip on him. Leaning forward, he put an elbow on his knee, resting his chin in the palm of his cupped hand, trying to think. They had enough plans in place to keep Harry safe for a while, he knew that. They had worked some out beforehand. However, they had never come up with anything to deal with all the issues since things weren't as bad at the time as they were now. Shutting his eyes, he pinched the bridge of his nose and tried to think. Though calmer, his thoughts were still riotous enough that coming up with something was going to be hard.
Sitting there, looking at the floor, Tom tapped his foot, trying to think. There was so much involved in this and it was so complicated that he wasn't sure where to start. Add on the being that they were trying to protect and it was made much worse. If it was anyone but Harry, they could just get a lawyer, have him resign from Hogwarts, something he could do because of his age, then work towards emancipation with no issue. However, because Fudge so had it out for the young man, it wasn't going to be allowed to go that way. Emancipation, in some way, might be the key there. That would get many things off his back though he wouldn't be out of the hands of the Ministry. That needed to come first. Starting to think aloud, he said, “Alright, main issues are getting Harry out of the hands of the Ministry and away from those that can use him, right?”
“Yes, that sums it up. It's easier said than done, however. Because of who he is, nothing will be allowed to go that easily. If we even tried, either Dumbledore, though in disfavor with the Ministry right now, or the Ministry itself would step in. The latter would more than likely call the whole thing a hoax then prosecute Harry over it. That's not an option,” Lucius told him with a sigh, leaning back in the chair, crossing his arms over his chest.
“Exactly,” Tom nodded. “Which means we need to find someone, somewhere that would actually listen to what is going on. The rape alone would be enough to get him pulled out of school and protected. Add on Dumbledore playing him like a pawn then his home life and most governments would be stepping in to take action. However, with what is going on now, ours isn't about to do that. I'm not in power yet and am not even close enough to try to gain it to do anything. Which means we have to deal with what is there now. That isn't good either. Anyone, in any department, that's likely to take Harry's side in anything will just be overruled, fired, demoted, whatever. That leaves most of the British government out. As Harry has ties to no other country, he's stuck dealing with this system.”
“I agree,” Lucius told him with a nod and dejected sigh. Then, snorting, he said, “It's too bad that the young man has no ties to France. Their Minister loathes everyone and everything going on here right now, so he would take him in a second, giving him asylum. Hell, he would do it just to tweak Fudge's nose because he hates the worthless man so much. It's not an option though, as Harry is British born with British parents.”
Looking at Lucius, Tom's brow furrowed. Something was starting to click. And, it was something that might work. As this wasn't his area to deal with, he wasn't sure how to go about it. However, Lucius might know. “Tell me, Lucius, you still own several properties in France, do you not?”
Shooting Tom a quizzical look, Lucius nodded, “Of course. Our holdings there go back long before there was a Malfoy in Britain.”
“Because you have business dealings there, you do have some connections in the government, don't you?”
Still not sure where this was going, Lucius, again, nodded then told him, “Of course. My dealings span most of Europe and I have, to varying degrees, connections in most governments that aren't totalitarian in nature. Even then, I have some, just not much. Why?”
“How strong are your connections to the French government?” Tom asked, plan starting to solidify.
“Actually, quite strong. Because it's so close, I go there often, dealing with many things. Not to mention my appreciation for many things French.”
Liking that, sure it was going to aid things, Tom then asked, “Alright, if things are as you say with the French minister, and his feelings towards the British government, could you get a meeting with him, lay out what is going on with Harry then ask for him to grant asylum over it? I know, generally, asylum is only granted for certain countries and then only for certain things. Britain isn't usually one of those either. This is, though, an extreme circumstance. And, in this instance, Harry's fame can only assist. Even the French know who he is.”
Turning that over in his mind, Lucius liked the idea. Drumming his fingers on the arm of the chair, he thought it over then said, tone cautious, “I might. It might work. We have the proof to back it up in the form of those memories. I know right now that the people of France, but especially the Minister, sees everything going on here as a joke. Hell, that paper put out in France, The British Seer, is devoted to debunking everything the Prophet says then reporting the news the way it really is. That's why Fudge is doing his best to stop it and ensure that people don't even know the thing exists! The Minister calls Fudge the British pig in interviews. He might listen, he really might. It would just be a matter of getting Harry in to see him is all.”
“That's where you would come into the thing. You could be something akin to a sponsor for him, you and Narcissa both. All you would need to say is you have someone that has greatly suffered at the hands of Fudge and is being persecuted unjustly just because of who he is so he wants out. Then bring up asylum in France. Hell, it's worth a shot because, right now, we don't have much. I would say just take Harry to one of your places in France to let him stay but if he's found out, there will be hell to pay, on everyone's end.” Tom explained.
Liking what he was hearing, Lucius began to think how to even go about it. It was, he thought, workable, that's for sure. Minister Jacques hated Fudge enough that, if presented with plenty of facts, might do it just to tweak Fudge. “One thing, though,” Lucius said, tone distracted. “If I manage to do this, and he does allow it, he will want to publicize it. I'm not sure about that or if Harry would like it.”
“Let him,” Tom said, sitting up straighter, crossing his arms over his chest. “You mentioned The British Seer... how about having them do it as their distribution is in the UK? I'm certain we could get Harry to agree. After you left to get Narcissa, he did say that he wanted revenge for this. Doing something like that would be perfect. No one would get hurt, something we know he doesn't like anyway, and it would be a shot at all those that have caused him problems.”
“Oh, that one I could work with! I have some pull with the managing editor! He and I go out on occasion for a glass of wine. Yes, if I explained to him the facts, though not giving a name, he would be all over it. He takes great delight in going after the Ministry and Prophet! This would be something he would AK his mother for,” Lucius told him, tone of sadistic glee weaving through his voice. The more he thought about the suggestion, the more he thought it was workable. The French minister would be the worst but he was persuasive when he needed to be. With all the evidence they had, everything they said could be easily proven. Then there was how the papers, government and other things were taking after a teenage boy. Yes, it could be done.
“The only thing here I need to mention is that you need to emphasize that Harry will want to be home schooled. Madam Maxine is too close to Dumbledore for Harry to go to Beauxbatons. She would give Dumbledore access to him in a second.” Tom said.
Not having thought of that, Lucius replied, “Oh, yes! I will make sure that is brought up. It'll also be brought up to slap Dumbledore. The Minister won't like having that old goat's hands in anything in France, especially when it comes to education.” Stopping, he thought over the whole thing, trying to find problem areas and other things that might trip them up. From what he could see, there were dangerous swamps everywhere in the whole thing, but he thought he could avoid them if he stepped lightly enough and paid attention to what he was doing. He could only see one hitch in the whole thing and that had to do with Harry.
“Alright, I do see where this is workable on the face. The only iffy thing I'm worried about is the French minister. However, there is one gremlin that might hop into the works; Harry. To do this, the Minister and paper are going to want copies of those memories to prove things. The paper would take the Minister's word that it was bad, yes, but they would want one of their reporters to see so they could write the article accurately. I don't see my young man wanting to give those up. They are, as you told me, bad. Not to mention the personal nature of what went on. He's so private about such things that I think he would balk.”
“There is that, yes,” Tom conceded, rubbing his chin. Lucius was correct; Harry wanted to be left alone and wouldn't like giving over such personal things. “First and foremost, since we haven't mentioned it, all of this is going to depend on Harry anyway. Unlike Dumbledore and the rest, we don't do things like this without getting someone's approval. However, I do believe, between you and me, we can persuade him to do it. This is, honestly, the only thing we have that is workable. If it goes as planned, he will be in France and away from any of the publicity. Nor would he have to look at the paper. The other thing would be that it is something cathartic in nature. He would have to talk about some of it, of course, but those memories would speak louder than most anything he could say. That would get his point across without him having to go into some of the more painful things. There will be, as always, people that won't believe it. Hell, there are fools that don't believe in basic laws of science and magic though there is ample proof of them. Most will though. Then the outcry on his behalf will be something that could only aid him. He's not an egotistical young man, despite what so many say. It's not going to go to his head. It may start him down the road to dealing with it, however. That can only aid things since we are going to be hard-pressed to find anyone to help him through this anyway.”
“That I can see the wisdom in, yes. First, there are very few mind healers that have dealt with rape in our world as it's so rare. Muggle ones do and have ones that specialize in it. However, the minute they hear his age and that it happened at school, despite him being emancipated, all hell will break loose. As it is, the Healer tending to him now is, by law, required to report such things. We can, of course, talk her out of it as she does so much for us, but it's there. This might be something that can only aid in things.” Evil smirk starting to show, Lucius sat there, looking smug after thinking of something else.
Knowing that look well and that Lucius had just come up with something not only diabolical but that he would like, Tom asked, “What is that look for?”
“I was thinking,” Lucius imparted smoothly, reaching down to smooth out his wrinkled robes. “If we can talk Harry into allowing the memories to be shared, we should send them to the DMLE as well.” Stopping, he thought it over then added, almost as an afterthought, “I think, because of the nature of the crime and Harry's age, they have to report it anyway as a matter of law and international treaty.”
“And that could get us in a load of trouble, Lucius,” Tom sighed, shaking his head. “No, there has to be a way around this.”
“No, it wouldn't,” Lucius replied smugly, smirk starting to show. “If Harry is granted asylum, the DMLE can't just show up and demand anything, even if it's reported directly from the French Ministry. They would have to go through the French Ministry to see him as he's under their watch because of the asylum. Not only that, these are copies of memories, not something Harry produced. Even if they were in the hands of DMLE and were the real ones, pulled by Harry himself, they could do nothing with them. Yes, they would know they were authentic and not faked, as the faked ones are easy to figure out, but there isn't anything they can do with them to prosecute. In order to even get a warrant for Veritaserum, they would have to have Harry authenticate them. If he's in France, they can't do it. Nor, with all this, is the Minister likely to grant any kind of access to the young man if Harry makes it clear he wants nothing to do with anything here nor would be willing to help, something I'm certain he won't.”
Staring at Lucius, processing that, Tom started to smirk. The more he thought about it, that smirk turned into an evil grin. Oh, he liked that! It would be the best revenge in the world while skirting an issue of law! The Ministry would have every fact in the world as to what went on but there wouldn't be a damned thing they could do about it, showing their ineptitude on so much. The victim of the whole thing would be so badly hurt by them that there was no way he would help, just compounding the issue and making everyone from Fudge on down look bad. Not to mention exposing Dumbledore in a way the headmaster wouldn't be able to counteract. It was perfect! Starting to chuckle, he said, “Oh, this I like!”
“It's perfect!” Lucius told him smugly, nodding. “The Ministry and Dumbledore created then compounded the problem. Now, to set it right, they would need the one being that was so hurt by them to fix it, something he probably won't ever do. How good is that?”
Letting out a deep laugh, eyes sparking, Tom nodded, “Yes, I like this! It's perfect. However, until we know Harry's stance, it's all planning, nothing more.”
Sobering up, Lucius replied, “Yes. When he wakes, we need to talk to him. This is urgent to set in motion. The faster we get it done, the better protected he will be.”
“Yes, I agree. We just have to wait for the Healer and Narcissa is all,” Tom sighed, looking at the door.
Rubbing his eyes, Lucius, too, sighed. The wait was going to be the worst. It was one thing to talk revenge, but he was far more worried about the young man in the other room than anything else.
