Walburga slammed her wand down on the table, fury in her eyes. Sirius and Regulus gulped, wondering what they did, Narcissa gave the other woman a haughty look from over the top of her hairbrush, and Orion merely raised an eyebrow. “Problem, dear?”
“Those filthy muggles never even taught him to read! He was completely illiterate!”
Orion smirked and lowered his teacup. “I see. Do you regret now, taking in such a problematic boy, regardless of his abilities?”
“Not on whit.” She ground out, glaring. “I taught him the basics, and he picked it up like he was meant for it. He’s devouring the library right now and I don’t mean the kids’ books, either. One, tiny bit of theory that he was starved for and he’s off like a racing broom!”
Orion twitched. “You mean the boy can read now? It’s only been a day!”
“Stop calling him ‘the boy’ he doesn’t like it. His name is Hadrian-“
“You’ve already named the boy?”
Walburga popped him upside the head. “Yes! Hadrian, because he is a dark, mysterious child, and it’s similar enough to Harry that everyone will think it’s merely a nickname if we slip. I was thinking Scorpio for a middle name, after all, he came to us on All Hallows Eve, and that’s Regulus’s birthday as well. He just needs a third. One would think, considering this is another son we are talking about, you’d be interested…”
Orion sighed. “Very well, we already have Sirius Orion Xavier, and Regulus Arcturus Damien. He needs a name that begins with a vowel, before Scorpio, for fluency. We have an O and an A name already. Ah, good morning, My Lord. Did you sleep well?” he said, glad for the reprieve.
“Better than I have for years, not a nightmare one. Speaking of, how is Harry?”
“He’s doing marvelously. The muggles didn’t teach him to read, but with the simplest instructions he was off, reading everything he can get his hands on.”
“Yes, I saw him in the library. Any luck finding a new name?”
“We’ve determined most of it,” she said with a glare at her husband. “We’re just looking for a name that starts with a vowel. For ‘fluency’.”
“What do you have so far?”
“Hadrian Scorpio.”
The dark lord watched as Harry came in, smiling despite the bruise still on his face, with a roll of parchment. He had apparently been scribbling notes.
The dark lord blinked. “Harry, that’s advanced magical theory…”
“I know, it’s absolutely fascinating! Everything else I’ve learned until now was through overhearing things or having people read the paper out loud. Now that I can actually read, and it’s something that interests me, I can’t stop.”
“And you understand it?”
“Well, it’s all based around simple concepts.” Harry said happily. “They add a lot of hard words to make a simple thing really long and complicated. Like this here, when it says that the ether is affected by the full moons light, which reacts with the pollen of the Aericeli Magus flower to form a potent mist which is capable of poisoning an entire village, but it says this in like, five pages which really aren’t necessary.”
He blinked again and laughed. “I believe you may be the first Black not to go into Slytherin. You might very well be a Ravenclaw.”
Harry smiled.
“Do you have a favorite house you want to be in?” Sirius asked, mouth full of bacon. Walburga rounded on him, unamused.
“Ravenclaw is a fine alternative to Slytherin.”
“I don’t want to be a Gryffindor, other than that… well, even Hufflepuffs, I mean loyalty isn’t necessarily a bad virtue, if tempered with something else. But I couldn’t see myself a Gryffindor.”
Sirius grumbled., “And what’s wrong with Gryffindor?”
“I just don’t think the unnecessary bravery thing is for me.” Harry said, having no idea that Sirius was in Gryffindor. “It seems the kind of place where you’re either in, and make friends for life, or out and ostracized from the entire school. I don’t think things are so black and white. Plus I heard the Headmaster favors Gryffindor, and I’d rather get good marks and such on my own merit.”
“What about Isadore?” The dark lord asked, changing the subject suddenly. Everyone blinked for a moment.
“Hadrian Isadore Scorpio Black.” Walburga said. “My Lord if I didn’t know you despised Numerology I think you chose that name on purpose.”
He looked confused.
“That name has a Soul Urge number of 9; it means he’s happiest serving others to whom he has a strong loyalty, especially if this can help mankind in general, like… being your Dark Siphon. He helps you, to who he will doubtlessly be loyal, and by extension all of us. His Quiescent Self is a 7, which means he adores books and reading and would rather dedicate him to knowledge for knowledge’s sake than anything else, which he has proven with the sheer amount of books he’s read in all of an hour. His Destiny Number is also seven, which since it comes right after another seven means a lack of trust in the majority of people and desire to become an authority in matters that interest him… which at the moment appears to be obscure magical theory. Overall, this name while fitting him now, also implies that he will be intelligent, logical, philosophical and loyal, and grow up to be quite an asset. It’s perfect.”
The Dark Lord bent down and whispered in Harry’s ear. “Truthfully, I chose Isadore because these two would be arguing for days, and I liked the meaning. Someone as priceless as you deserves to be adored.”
Harry blushed scarlet, mumbling a thank you. He smirked and regarded them both, especially Walburga who was looking more than a little shocked. “Orion. It is, of course, your library, but I would ask that Harry be allowed to study as he desires. Such talent of understanding, and breaking down concepts, should be nurtured.”
Harry finished his breakfast, and Walburga gave Sirius a long look. “Sirius, why don’t you take your brothers outside, Harry, go ahead and bring your scroll, dear. But you need sun.”
“Yes, Lady black.” Harry answered respectfully, heading outside with the others. When the children were gone, she turned.
“My Lord… forgive me if this abrupt, but… what are your intentions? One would think you would want a Dark Siphon in your own home, not raised here, however much I adore the child. And to grant him access…”
“The child is mature, and has darkness in him, Walburga, I can sense it. He’s going to be powerful, but more than that, he’s also going to be very wise with all the knowledge he has, both of life and from his reading. Besides, as you mentioned earlier… I am lonely.” He admitted, putting down his teacup, after all, if everything went well these would be his in-laws. “From the moment I meet them, people know I am the Dark Lord, merely by my eyes. They are frightened, terrified, or, like your own niece, smitten with the idea of power. Hadrian is different, he wants power, yes, but through his own merit and not others; I can only think that such a maturity will only grow with time, and I would rather wait the years needed for him to mature, and have a true companion in this life, than have my family become another burden.”
“Forgive me, my lord, but you know in our family we do not force a marriage, if one party is truly unconsenting. I assume that’s your aim, but if he does not desire you in that manner… what will you do?”
“Honestly, Orion? I am unsure. While I would prefer, of course, to one day call him husband, at the same time I worry that perhaps I am not what he needs. Still, I will wait, and watch, and I ask for nothing as of yet, but the chance to get him interested. If he shows no interest, then he will merely be a friend and confidant.”
Walburga nodded. “And if he does show interest, then we will create a contract, right Orion?”
“Of course, dear.”

Harry was nervous as he looked at the red steam engine. At eleven, he had put on some needed pounds and studied everything in the Black Library, even some of the darker books. His wand was a beauty, ebony and demiguise hair, inlaid with runes, a specialty by Gregorovitch. He was a rather fey boy, shorter than his brothers, with bright green eyes, paler complexion, more studious even that Reg. Right now however, he was worried about the Sorting. Finally his mother laughed and pulled him into a hug. “Harry, dearest. Listen. Sirius already broke the mold; going into Gryffindor, so there’s no reason to worry. Whatever house you go in, we will be proud of you.”
“I know you will, mother.” Harry whispered. “But Father and Marvolo will be horribly disappointed if I’m not at least a Ravenclaw. If I get into Gryffindor… I don’t want to lose them. Father only now started to warm up to me…”
“Darling, listen.” She said, just a few minutes before the train was going to depart. Your father is not a very affectionate man, but he is proud of you, he has been since you outwitted him in that chess game. He may not sure it as much as I, but its there. And as for Marvolo? You will always be precious to him, regardless of house. You keep him sane and strong. Things will be harder for you if you’re in Gryffindor, but we won’t mind either way. Now go, little one.”
Harry smiled and got on the train, sitting next to his brother in a nearly empty compartment. The train took off, neither of them saying a word, until a fight broke out, outside the compartment. Curiosity getting the better of them, they opened the door, seeing Sirius laughing as a rather aristocratic blond tried to help another fourth year boy down. He was hanging upside down with greying boxers shown to the entire section of the train, and must have been utterly humiliated.
“Sirius!” Harry said, trying to channel their mother. “Come on, that’s enough!”
Sirius snorted and let the other boy down, who glared at everyone, even Harry. Reg just shirked back, trying to stay out of it.
“Just leave well enough alone, Hadrian!”
“I will not.” Harry hissed, drawing up his full, less than impressive height, and wondering who the three with him were. A redhead was coming down the hall, a rather pretty girl, frowning as well. She went to Severus and the boy beside him let out a litany of disparaging remarks.
“Lils, come on, that greasy good for nothing deserves everything he gets, He’s a Slytherin, evil-“
“Strange, isn’t it. How people like you can spout out the word evil as if you have any idea what it means.” Harry ground out, remembering his relatives.
“Sorry, James, this is my little brother, Hadrian. He’s a pipsqueak he’s just a little too outspoken for his own good!”
“Sirius. Would you say an ‘evil’ person,” Harry began, knowing his brother was going to hate this. “Is one who torments others over idealism? After all, differences of opinion are what make the Wizarding world great, right, you said that yourself, last summer. Wouldn’t it be an evil person who humiliates and degrades someone else because of something that they just don’t agree with?”
“Of course! See, you do get it!”
“And wouldn’t a good person choose instead simply not to associate with people who have differing opinions, if it disturbed them so much?”
“Exactly!”
“Then the only evil one I see here is you, Sirius.” Harry said, making him go pale. “You and these friends of yours. I don’t care what excuses you have, there is no reason to humiliate someone you probably don’t even know. You aren’t funny, you aren’t getting vengeance or justice or whatever it is you’ve convinced yourself you are. You’re just another bully.”
“Good for you!” said the redheaded girl. “I wouldn’t expect a brother of Black’s to even know what a bully was, but you changed my mind.” She smiled. “Severus never does anything to them, but they do this every year.”
“I don’t need any help!” the hook nosed boy spat.
“Regardless of whether you need it or not,” Harry said. “My brother going on like this is humiliating for me! And you can be sure mother is going to hear about it. I’ll ask her to forward letters on to the families of his friends as well. On behalf of the Black family, my sincerest apologies.”
Sirius paled. He’d apparently forgotten that his brothers might tattle. James was shaking. His father was going to rip him a new one.
~
Harry was the second one called for the sorting, and as he approached, outwardly calm, he was shaking like a life in his mind. He sat down and put the hat on his head, listening to the thing whisper and grumble. Finally it spoke.
“Interesting, interesting! Traits of all four houses, but still… despite your wishes I must put you where you belong, my lad. You never know. You might do some good to that house. Gryffindor!”
Harry closed his eyes, and walked to his brothers table, sitting alone at the end where he would be joined by other first years. Sirius grinned triumphantly, but Harry felt sick. He couldn’t eat, though he did smile weakly at Reg when he got into Slytherin. He also didn’t bother talking to anyone, even his brother, instead going upstairs to write the letter he promised.
“Dearest Mother,
First things first, I had to chastise Sirius on the train. Apparently he and some of the other Gryffindors boys in his year have taken to bullying the Slytherins, disgracing the Black name. I have found their names to be Peter Pettigrew, Remus Lupin, and James Potter. I apologized to the victim on behalf of the Black family, as the attack was completely unwarranted, but one of the Gryffindor girls of the year assures me that this has happened every year, and is not confined merely to the current Victim, Severus Snape. Apparently Snape is a potions prodigy, and the others feel that his hair being unkempt is a reason to mercilessly humiliate him. I suggest a monetary compensation, Snape appears to be rather poor, and his mind alone is worth future alliances.
Secondly, I must apologize. I know you said you’d be proud of me wherever I went, however, I am not proud. I cannot be proud to be in Gryffindor, not with him, not with the sheer gall of these people! I know you wished for me to have a good time here, be less serious… but I can’t. My sincerest apologies for being unworthy of the love and care you have shown me over the years…
Sincerely.
Harry.”

The redhead, Lily, put her hand on his forehead suddenly, making the rest of the table freeze. She frowned, then, and he looked up to see what she wanted.
“Strange. Black, you don’t have a fever but you look ten shades of dead…” she muttered. “Did you even sleep last night?”
He shook his head. He was so ashamed he couldn’t even speak. Two. Out of the entire dorm, he had found two people who actually symbolized the good points of the Lion House, one of which was the girl in front of him. Muggleborn, yes, but she studied and wanted to learn about Wizarding culture, which was more than he could say for most.
James stood angrily and was about to open his mouth when mail came in. Several letters however, were staggered, held by pure black owls Harry recognized as being from the black Owlery.
One carrying a red letter dropped its burden straight on Sirius’s head. It burst open immediately, and began to screech, as three other owls came in. They too, began circling, waiting.
“SIRIUS ORION XAVIER BLACK! I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO ASHAMED IN MY LIFE!” Harry felt bad for Sirius, in a way, Walburga was the active parent, the one who usually scolded. If Orion was mad… “YOUR BROTHER TOLD ME WHAT YOU’VE BEEN UP TO. YOU LIED TO MY FACE! NO ENEMIES AT SCHOOL1 UPHOLDING THE FAMILY HONOR! WHAT PART OF THAT DO YOU THINK APPLIES TO HUMILIATING YOUR FELLOW STUDENTS! IN THE NAME OF MERLIN, BOY, ONE TOE OUT OF LINE THIS YEAR AND I WILL SEE YOU SENT TO DURMSTRANG, WHERE THEY KNOW HOW TO HANDLE RPOBLEM CHILDREN! AS FOR YOU HEADMASTER, IF YOU WILL NOT DISCIPLINE MY SON, THEN I WILL SEE TO IT SOMEONE WILL! I PAY FOR HIS SCHOOLING FOR KNOWLEDGE, DISCIPLINE, AND SOCIALIZATION, NOT FOR HIM TO BE TURNED INTO A MINDLESS BULLY! YOU HAVE SHAMED YOUR HOUSE, SIRIUS, AND YOU WILL BE HEARING ABOUT IT COME HOLIDAY!”
The ringing yells finished, with Sirius looking nearly broken. Another howler dropped.
“JAMES POTTER! HOW DO YOU SHAME THE NOBLE HOUSE OF GRYFFINDOR! I RAISED YOU TO BE A PUREBLOOD, A GRYFFINDOR, A BRAVE AND NOBLE MAN WHO WOULD STAND UP TO INJUSTICE AND FIGHT HONORABLY FOR HIS BELIEFS! TO HEAR FROM WALBURGA BLACK OF ALL PEOPLE THAT HER YOUNGEST SON HAD TO REPORT THIS… IT’S A TRAVESTY! OBVIOUSLY, WE HAVE ALLOWED YOU FAR TOO MUCH FREEDOM! TO RETURN OUR TRUST BY ACTING LIKE THIS CLEARLY SHOWS OUR BAD PARENTING, AND WE APOLOGIZE NOW TO EVERY ONE OF HIS VICTIMS. JAMES, WE ARE COMING HOME AND SO HELP US BOTH WE WILL BREAK THESE HABITS OF YOURS!”
“PETER, WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU THINKING! I REALIZE WE HAVE OUR PROBLEMS BUT THIS IS TOO MUCH! I DO NOT SLAVE EVERY DAY WORKING FOUR JOBS AND BARELY SLEEPING TO PAY YOUR TUITION, ONLY TO HEAR FROM SOMEONE I DON’T EVEN KNOW THAT YOU ARE PART OF A GANG THAT TERRORIZES STUDENTS OF ANOTHER HOUSE! I SENT YOU TO HOGWARTS SO YOU COULD BE A BETTER PERSON THAN YOUR FATHER, NOT TURN OUT JUST LIKE THE MAN! IF YOU CONTINUE TO ACT THIS WAY, I WILL WITHDRAW YOU FROM SCHOOL!”
“REMUS I AM ASHAMED OF YOU FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YOUR ENTIRE LIFE! YOU OF ALL PEOPLE SHOULD BE THE FIRST PERSON FIGHTING INJUSTICE AND BULLYING LIKE THIS, NOT ENABLING IT! I CAN SEE IF HE WAS BULLYING YOU, BUT THAT CLEARLY ISN’T THE CASE! YOU HAVE A LEVEL HEAD AND A FINE MIND, REMUS, YOU CAN GO FAR IF YOU PUT YOUR MIND TO IT, BUT NOT IF YOU CONTINUE WITH ACTS LIKE THESE! YOU’RE ALREADY GOING TO BE PERSECUTED AGAINST! I KNOW HOW LOYAL YOU ARE TO YOUR FRIENDS, BUT YOU NEED TO USE COMMON SENSE! IF THESE PEOPLE ARE ENCOURAGING YOU TO DO THINGS LIKE THIS NOW, WHAT HAPPENS LATER, WHEN YOU’RE OUT OF SCHOOL? DO NOT MAKE ME COME DOWN THERE!”
“HEADMASTER DUMBLEDORE! SO HELP ME MERLIN IF YOU DON’T TAKE THESE ACTS SERIOUSLY I WILL HAVE YOU BROUGHT UP ON CHARGES MYSELF! YOU ARE THE HEADMASTER NOW, NOT THE HEAD OF HOUSE, ACT LIKE IT!”
Three letters flew down to Severus Snape. One by one they opened. From the Lupin family, he was set up with a Potions Master after graduation for a fully paid Mastery. From the Potters he received various books on potions that made his eyes nearly fall out of his head. And when the black missive opened, he nearly cried. Apparently Mother had taken Harry’s words to heart, and set up Snape a vault to fully take care of tuition, books, food and clothes over the summer.
Just then a slightly pink letter plopped on Harry’s head. It was a sound Missive, like a Howler, but not as violent, or loud. This one opened itself quickly, and spoke.
“Hadrian, your mother says you have been sorted into Gryffindor. She also says that you feel you have shamed the family by doing so, but let me tell you this- not once since the day we adopted you have I ever felt you were a disappointment to this family. We should have told Sirius this, but… there is nothing, nothing at all, wrong with being a Gryffindor! Bravery, when tempered with wisdom, loyalty, and cunning, is a good thing! The ability to stand up in the face of adversity, to face fears and triumph over them, to lay down your life for those you care for, these are traits we value as Blacks which are also traits of Gryffindor! You have not shamed us, and you will not do so, provided that you use the logic, cunning and loyalty you also possess. Do not break over one trait, my son, the Sorting hat only picks your strongest value, it does not mean you have no others. We are proud of you, and hope you do well.”
Harry sobbed with relief, almost breaking down. James looked at him as sound returned to normal in the hall, and spoke. “Why are you that upset? I mean… Gryffindor isn’t a bad house!”
“It’s not that, James.” Sirius said, looking down. His cheeks were pink from being yelled at and then his house being defended, by his father no less. “Harry’s adopted. His previous family… they… well, they weren’t very nice to him because he was different… a lot like us and the Slytherins I suppose… and he’s tried so hard to fit in with us since he was adopted it isn’t even funny. I guess for him, breaking the Black traditions must have been like a death sentence.”
