(Author’s note: Here it is chapter 2; hopefully more interesting and longer than the first chapter was. Without further ado, on we go.)
Harry was up before dawn, as per usual. He glanced over at his cousin, noticing that the other teen was fully asleep. Sighing softly, he got out of bed silently, walking on cat’s feet to the bathroom. While he did notice how exhausted he still was, he had more important things to worry about. Once his morning routine was finished, he dug into his backpack and pulled out a change of clothes.
Dudley woke up slowly, hearing a shuffling sound. He wondered at first why there was sound in his room. Then last night came back to him, and he stiffened briefly. His eyes opened a slit, noting that it was just starting to get light out. The growing light illuminated the room enough that he could see his cousin; or, more precisely, his cousin in only his boxers, pulling on a shirt that covered his various scars. Dudley bit back a groan as he felt blood rush to his nethers. He pushed against the arousal, not wanting to embarrass himself.
A few minutes after Harry finished dressing, Dudley got up himself. He quietly padded to the bathroom to do what he had to. When he came back out, he asked Harry “What are our plans for the day?”
Harry blinked slightly, looking up from a map he had in his hands. He said “First we are going to Olivander’s to get you a wand, then we are going to go to a rather shady place to get the Trace removed.” He glanced back at his map briefly, before nodding and putting it away. Getting his backpack, he said “Afterward, we are going to go to Gringotts so I can check what properties the Potters owned, and find a place we can live until school starts. However, first you need to get dressed; I shall meet you downstairs when you have finished.”
Dudley sighed, and got ready for the day. He was soon dressed in a green tee, jeans and his sneakers. Picking up his backpack, he headed downstairs to the bar, joining Harry at a table. The other teen had gotten two bowls of porridge, explaining that they had to eat light that day. Breakfast was short, and they were soon outside in an alley way, with Harry tapping a brick in the back wall.
Dudley thought it was strange, but cut that thought short as the wall pulled away, revealing a whole lane of shops, with the shop-keepers opening their doors. He noticed a few people already shopping, and he could recognize them as wizards, even from where he stood. Then he noticed Harry beginning to walk into what was obviously Diagon Alley, and he had no time to think as he had to walk quickly to keep up with his cousin. Harry might have been small for his age, but he was much quicker than he looked.
Harry headed directly for Olivander's, keeping his head mostly down so that his bangs hid his scar. The old man was discreet, so he wouldn’t be a problem. However, he didn’t want to alert the media that he was in Diagon Alley. He’d never be able to hide if that happened. Thus it was a relief when he opened the door the shop, and they both walked in.
Harry stilled his body as the door closed, soaking in the magic that simply permeated from every pore of the shop. The wild magic, while unsafe, was like a life essence to the exhausted wizard. However, like anything that had potency, Harry only took enough of it to feel a slight buzz in his skin. He glanced at Dudley, smirking at the amazement on his cousin's face.
Dudley glanced around the neat, but busy shop. There were boxes piled on boxes on the shelves behind the counter, wands on display in the shop window as well as a single wand in a display case to his left. There were also moving posters, showing what a wand was capable of, as well as describing the price and quality. Then there was the magic; Dudley wasn't strong, like Harry was. He would never become more than a mediocre wizard, with a future that was mediocre as well. If he was fortunate, his magic would be what a truly strong wizard needed as an anchor. However, despite the rather blandness of his own magical ability, he could still feel the presence of the magic in the shop. It would have made him drunk, had the owner not come out from the back when he did.
Olivander was just as Harry remembered him: old, wizened, and frankly spooky. The old wand-maker glanced at Harry, raised an eyebrow, then looked at the larger teen. He smiled slightly, and said in his wispy voice “Ah...I never thought I would see you, not when your magic suddenly disappeared from the registry.” Dudley gave the man a confused look, eying him warily.
The older wizard chuckled, saying “I have seen many wizards get there first wand. I long ago learned that I could detect, however faintly, children who would eventually come to me for that special wand. With that talent, I formed my registry to keep track of all students, Hogwarts or no, who would eventually become customers. However, your name, Mr. Dursley, disappeared some twelve years ago. Apparently whatever had been wrong has been fixed now.” A decisive nod, and a beckoning motion signaled the end of the explanation, and the beginning of the long process of choosing a wand.
Dudley never realized how exceedingly frustrating it was to wait as a measuring tape measured him, then being given wand after wand to try. Though it didn't take him nearly as long as it had Harry, it certainly felt that way. He finally got a wand, one that complimented his cousin's in the protection field. Once the wand was paid for, the two teens left and headed down a dark, grimy alley that Harry called Knockturn Alley.
Harry shivered as they walked, remembering his first experience in the Alley. The place literally oozed Dark Magic, to the extent that he was grateful when they reached a small shop squeezed in between two larger buildings.
There was no bell above the door, though Harry heard a distinct chime in the back. Soon, a man who appeared to be in his thirties, came out from the stock room. He glanced at the two of them, and said in a gravelly voice “I have never seen a more unlikely couple as you two. Come on, into the back with you both.” The shopkeeper beckoned and led the two utterly surprised teens into the back, Harry with some reluctance.
Once the two were seated in the chairs that had been specifically placed there for customers, the shopkeeper continued “I assume you both want the Trace off, yes? Thought so. One of my more expensive services, so you know. Ah, you have the coin for it, good, good. Give me the money, and I'll take the trace off.” Harry handed the gravel-voiced wizard the required money, and the man took out his wand, murmured some Latin with complicated wand movements over first Harry's, then Dudley's head. Harry gasped slightly as he felt something akin to a shackle fall from him. It was hard to believe it was that easy, but that was a relief as well.
After the wizard had finished removing the Trace from both of them, he said “Be very careful, both of you. What most at that famed school don't tell you, is that wizards all have trace creature blood in them. Both of you,” here the man pointed first to one then the other “are descended from naiads, water-nymphs. Highly fertile species, with a submissive entering into fertility if near a dominant during the transition into adult-hood. So, unless one of you wishes to go back to school pregnant, lock yourselves up when one of your sixteenth birthday's arrives. On the upside, once you both are adults, you will have a much easier time swimming.”
Harry and Dudley, stunned by the influx of information, left the shop and Knockturn Alley. They went to Gringotts, where it was an easy enough matter to get the property list, once the problem revolving around dealing with goblins who were very suspicious of everyone was taken care of. Harry soon found a perfect cottage, located within Hogsmeade village but under so many wards that only a Potter heir and his family could enter it.
Harry would infinitely be grateful that the cottage, which was on the outskirts of the village, was next to a Floo way point that was unguarded. Within a half-hour, both Harry and Dudley were at the village, and passing through the wards.
Their first sight of the cottage was somewhat disappointing: the outside had been allowed to become overgrown, and the outer house needed a fresh coat of paint. However, when they went inside, they found it clean, if a bit cozy. Apparently the stasis charms only worked on the inside. Deciding they had had enough of excitement and dealing with problems, they both headed upstairs to the bedrooms.
There were exactly two bedrooms, and one bath. Separating in the hall, they both wished the other a good night, and headed to sleep, despite the fact that it was only 1 in the afternoon. For once, both parties' sleep was undisturbed, and they slept till morn, where the process of really moving in started.
(End Author's note: Alrighty, so a relatively long chapter. Sorry it took so long folks. I hope you all enjoy.)
