Chapter 2
“Come now, child. Let’s get you to the train,” he said, levitating her trunk down the stairs. Muttering a spell, he sent the trunk on ahead to the train station. Offering his arm, he allowed her to wrap her arm around it and then he apparated them both to the train station. “Here you are. Once the train arrives, just board it and find a compartment, take your trunk with you. When you get to the other end, leave your trunk on the train, it will be transported to the school ahead of you.”
Nicole nodded and wrapped her arms around his waist. He dropped a hand to her back and rubbed it for a moment. “I love you, father,” she whispered.
“I love you, too, Nicole. Now I must be going. I will see you at Hogwarts in a few hours,” he said as she released him.
“Of course, father. I look forward to seeing you at the feast,” she said and made her way over to a bench to await the train as he disappeared. Looking around, she took in her surroundings. There wasn’t much to see; just a regular train platform, only this one was magical. The 9 ¾ sign above the gate was indication of that. Her father had told her plenty about the train and how to get here from the muggle side, just in case she might ever need to get here that way. After an hour of waiting, when the clock struck 9 am, the train pulled into the station. She grabbed her trunk and boarded the train, finding a compartment to sit in that was towards the front of the train, just behind the prefects’ compartment. She knew that it was another 2 hours before the train would begin the journey to Hogwarts, so she pulled out a book and began to read. After a few minutes, her eyelids began to droop and soon she was asleep. She awoke to a pain in her chest. Looking around, she realized what that pain was. She was feeling the emotions of those around her. While she had slept, the train station had come alive with people. Students boarding the train, while their parents watched and waved. The pain in her chest was the pain of those parents who were sad to see their children go off to school for a year. Concentrating, she successfully pushed those emotions aside and the pain vanished.
About 5 minutes before the train was to leave, she watched as a red head stepped through the gate from the muggle side. Right behind him was another red head and then another, then an older woman and a small girl appeared, both red heads. She figured that they were the Weasely family that her father talked about on occasion. They were all red heads and there were a lot of them. Before she realized it, the train began to move and she was surprised to find that the compartment she was in had remained empty. Turning back to her book, she lost herself in the story. Several minutes later, the compartment door opened, causing her to look up. The red haired girl was standing there looking at her.
“Umm… do you mind? Everywhere else is full,” she said.
“Sure, come on in. I don’t mind. Is this your first year?” Nicole asked, gesturing to the seat across from her.
The other girl nodded, “I’m Ginny Weasely. My brothers have all gone here before me. Right now there will be 5 of us at school. There are 2 more who have already graduated.” Ginny rambled on, nervous and excited about going to Hogwarts.
“I’m Nicole Evans. This is my first year as well. It’s nice to meet you, Ginny. I’m glad of the company, this is supposed to be a long trip,” she said. The two girls talked the entire way to Hogwarts.
As the train pulled into the station, the students crowded the exits and the nervous first years heard themselves being called. They grouped up around an enormous man holding a lantern. After a few moments, Nicole found herself in a boat with 2 other kids her age, puttering across the Black Lake towards the castle. Nicole felt the excitement of the other students, but pushed it all to the back and concentrated on her own feelings. She was excited and nervous, not wanting to disappoint her father. They had never discussed the houses and which one he would prefer she was in. She assumed that he would be happy with whatever house she got put in, but she wasn’t certain. Once the group of first years had reached the castle, a stern looking woman took over from the huge man.
“My name is Professor McGonagall. Shortly, I will be taking you in to the Great Hall for the sorting ceremony. There are 4 houses. They are Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Your house will be like your family while you are here at Hogwarts. Triumphs will gain you house points, any rule breaking and you will lose house points. I will return in a moment to take you in,” she said as she turned and disappeared through the double doors behind her. It wasn’t long before she returned and ushered them inside towards a stool with a hat on it.
As the line of first years stopped at the front of the Great Hall, Nicole saw the split in the hat open and they heard the Sorting Hat’s song. After he had finished, everyone applauded and then turned their attention to the group getting ready to be sorted into their house. “When I call your name, step up here and sit on the stool. Place the hat on your head and wait for it to sort you. Then join your house table.” McGonagall explained. She unrolled a scroll and began calling names from it. As each name was called, a student would step forward.
Before long, “Evans, Nicole,” the professor called out. Nicole stepped forward and took a seat on the stool as the hat was placed on her head.
‘Oh, I haven’t seen this mind in a while. Your mother was a great woman, too bad she didn’t survive longer. You have a mind like your mother, very intelligent, very loyal and brave and even quite cunning. You could fit into any house, just like her and your brother. They both denied their Slytherin side, will you? No, you will embrace it, won’t you. So much like your mother, but so different. You will do well in any house, but I think Slytherin is best for you,’ she heard the hat say in her mind.
“Sytherin!” the hat yelled out. The hat was removed from her head and she went to join her house table. As she passed by her father’s seat, she felt a pain in her heart. Hissing slightly, she recognized it as disappointment. She had managed to suppress all the emotions in the room, except for her father’s. For some reason, she wasn’t able to push his emotions aside. As she sat down, she placed a hand over her heart. It really hurt to feel her father’s disappointment. Everyone’s attention was still on the other first years being sorted and she chanced a glance up at her father. He was looking over at her and she felt a small tear slide down her cheek. She quickly swiped at it, but he had seen it and knew that he was the cause of it. Standing up abruptly, he stalked out of the Great Hall, upset with himself for hurting his daughter. He wanted so much for her to be like Lily and be in Gryffindor. He wasn’t sure why he was disappointed that she had ended up in his own house. He should have loved the fact that his daughter had followed him into Slytherin. Entering an empty classroom, he paced the length of the room, berating himself for being the least bit disappointed with his daughter. She could never be a disappointment to him. He had to let her know that it was only a fleeting feeling; he had to let her know that she had not disappointed him in the least. But how? Dumbledore appeared at the doorway then, solving his problem. Behind him was a very distraught Nicole.
“You both looked like you needed a few minutes to talk in private,” the headmaster said and ushered Nicole into the room with her father. Severus enveloped her in his arms and the sobs began to wrack her body.
“I’m so sorry, father. I never meant to disappoint you,” she said between sobs.
“My dear child, you could never disappoint me. It was a fleeting feeling and I never should have felt it. I didn’t mean to hurt you. I thought you had this power under control,” he said to her, rubbing gentle circles on her back.
“I do, father, but I cannot block out your feelings. I’ve tried and I can’t do it. I can block out everyone else’s, but not yours. I don’t know why. I thought you’d be pleased to have me in your house.” Nicole told him.
“I am pleased, Nic. I love that you will be close to me. I just had hoped you’d be more like your mother and be in Gryffindor.” Severus said, pulling her away from him.
“Ah, but there you are wrong, Severus. Nicole is very much like her mother, her brother, too. Lily and Harry both were to be sorted into Slytherin, only they both chose not to be. The hat does take our choice into consideration. We have long discussions after the feast about each new student sorted.” Dumbledore explained.
Severus gaped at him, “She was supposed to be in Slytherin?”
Dumbledore nodded, “Yes, Severus she was. Nicole didn’t deny it like Lily and Harry did.”
“Nicole, you could be in any house, why did you pick Slytherin?” he asked her.
“I didn’t pick it. I just didn’t have a preference. We’ve never talked about the houses before; I only knew that you were head of house for one of them. I didn’t know which one. The hat told me all about my mother and brother denying that they had any Slytherin in them. He said that I would be great in that house.” Nicole said in a shaky voice.
Severus gathered her up in his arms again, “My dear daughter, please forgive my slip up in there. I am in no way disappointed in you. I always thought that your mother was a Gryffindor through and through, but thinking back, now I do see a bit of underlying Slytherin.”
“I’m sorry, father, I’m not my mother. I don’t know much about her to be just like her. I only want to make you proud of me,” she said.
“I know that you aren’t your mother. I’m a silly old man who was trying to make you into someone you aren’t,” he said, releasing her again. “Now, I’m sure you are exhausted. Tuning out all those emotions has to be taxing on you. So, off to bed.”
“The head girl is waiting outside to take you to your dorm and show you how to get in.” Dumbledore told her as she turned to leave the room. When she had left with the head girl, he turned back to Severus. “See, you can handle this, Severus. Nothing to it.”
Severus Snape laughed out loud at the headmaster’s statement. “Yeah, right, I upset her the very first day, before classes even begin. Yeah, that’s handling things. I still think this is a very bad idea, Albus. You know very well that I can teach her at home.”
“Yes, I do know that, Severus. I also know that she needs the contact with other children her age. You’ve kept her shut up in that house for 11 years now; she needs this time away from there. I realize that she has had to learn to get her powers under control and being is a crowd is very exhausting for her, but I stand by my wanting her here.” Dumbledore assured him. “She will be fine.”
“She may be fine, but I will be stressed out until she graduates or decides that it is all too much.” Severus said, running a hand over his face and blowing out a breath. “Okay, I should go check on my house and make sure they all are in bed.” With that said, he swept out of the room. He made his way to the dungeons and checked on his house. Seeing that most students were in the bed already, he went to his own quarters and began preparing for his lessons. His thoughts on his daughter and how much like her mother she really was. Sure, she was her own person, but she was so much like her mother also.
