Severus woke the next morning, surprised with himself that he had been able to fall asleep in the first place. As strange as her presence had been, Hermione Granger's face was all he could think about. She had boldy called him "gorgeous." No one had ever told him that he was such. Not even his own mother. But why him? Surely, a girl like Hermione could have anyone in the world. Surely, a girl as attractive as Hermione could do much better than himself. Yet, he decided he wouldn't complain. It had been a long time since Lily Evans had been pushed from his mind. He didn't think about her the rest of the day the day before. Now, Hermione was rampant on his thoughts.
Smiling to himself, he thought about how grand it would be to walk through Hogwarts with the newly-met witch at his side. He could only imagine what his peers would think. For the first time in his life, he was excited about something. Someone.
Peering at the time-piece on his bedside table, he noted it was four-thirty a.m. Always, he woke around this time, no matter how late he went to bed. He could go to bed at midnight, and still wake four hours and thirty minutes later. Grumbling, he rubbed his eyes and tossed back the tattered duvet to roll himself out of bed. He knew his father would be angry with the noise of the shower running so early, so he casted a silencing charm around the bathroom and began removing his clothes.
He turned the knobs at the end of the tub and then stood to survey himself in the mirror while the water had ample time to heat. Bringing a pale hand to his face, he gently touched his own cheek. "Gorgeous, huh?" he thought aloud, snorting with disbelief as he remembered, once again, Hermione's claim. As much as he sincerely appreciated the complement, he just couldn't see it.
Shaking his head, Severus turned away from the mirror and stepped into the shower. He hung his head in the spray, letting his black locks become soaked as he thought about her, more and more. He hoped she would indeed come around again later that day.
------
Hermione woke at five a.m., despite not being able to get to sleep until almost one in the morning. Her mind had been taunting her all the while after she left Severus. She couldn't stop thinking about him. All the things she would need to tell him, especially. Though, she was grateful, as the four hours she had to sleep was far more than she had gotten at one collective time in the past month.
She showered, dressed, and headed down to the bar where she would order a simple breakfast, and write a letter to owl to Headmaster Dumbledore to request a meeting. Pulling out a piece of parchment, a quill and some ink, Hermione began to write:
"Dear Headmaster Dumbledore,
You don't know who I am, but I am hoping that I can have a meeting with you soon to address just who I am. I believe I have a fair bit of explaining to do, and I feel that it would be much easier to lay it all out on the table in person. I have a load of information regarding he-who-must-not-be-named. I am staying at the Leaky Cauldron for the time being. Room 5.
With all my sincerity and hope,
Hermione Granger."
Hermione smiled her thanks and nodded as the barkeep set a plate of eggs and bacon down in front of her. "Is there an owl here that I can borrow to send this letter on it's way? It's to Headmaster Dumbledore." she told the man she suddenly noticed to be a much younger Tom.
"Why, certainly young miss. Absolutely." he smiled warmly. Without another word, he left the bar, returning moments later with a small tawny owl. "Her name is Pretty. Though, her attitude has much to be desired." he winked at her before setting the bird down in front of Hermione.
Reaching out to tie the letter onto the owl's outstretched leg, Hermione jumped as Pretty attempted to peck at the back of her hand. "Sodding bird..." Hermione murmured so Tom wouldn't hear her. "This is to Prof- Headmaster Dumbledore. Thank you, Pretty..." she thanked the owl, tearing off a bit of her toast to offer her. Pretty clipped the piece of toast in her beak and set off.
First task in 1977, finished. Now all she had to do was wait for his reply. She hoped it would be soon, because she wanted to see Severus sooner than later. Hermione made her way back up to her room, hoping to get a few more hours of sleep, but she knew it wouldn't be possible. Instead of seeing Severus' cold black eyes growing hazy when she closed her own eyes, she was able to think about his smile; the smile he had let only her see, just days before his departure from the world. But, here, he was going to get another chance at life, and she felt a level of content, knowing that she was going to be the one to give it to him.
As much as she missed Harry and Ron, Ginny, and the rest of her friends 1998, she also took comfort in the fact that they seemed to have understood, whole-heartedly. Bless them for being so.
Harry was all for it, considering he would be able to grow up with two parents, alive and well. He wouldn't be "the chosen one" and he wouldn't have the burden of his status as a "Celebrity of the Wizarding World."
"I can be normal..." is what he had told her. She knew he wanted nothing more than that, all his life. Even though she knew that Harry would be born and have no idea of the life he lived in Hermione's time... she took comfort in that fact as well.
Ron was also happy to let it happen. "Maybe Snape won't be such a git." is what he had said, with a watery-eyed grin.
Hermione remembered as she hugged her two best friends close, kissed them both goodbye, and had gone and talked to Minerva. Now, here she was.
A few hours later, just as she was about to drift off to sleep, the screech of an owl came, startling her in the process. She jumped up from the bed and quickly flung the window open to allow Pretty access. The tawny little shit of an owl landed on the window sill and held it's leg out, bearing a finely-addressed reply. She recognized the handwriting immediately. Taking off of her little leg, Hermione bounded back onto her bed, smiling brightly as she prepared to read Albus' reply.
"Hello, Miss Granger,
It is not every day that I receive a letter such as yours. Information about Voldemort, you say? Well, I'd be most delighted to hear this staggering news. Please, as soon as you can, head to the Ministry of Magic. Tell the floo office I refered you there so you may receive a pass to Hogwarts.
Regards,
Albus Dumbledore."
Hermione wasted no time. Knowing exactly how to enter the Ministry, she did so swiftly and followed Dumbledore's instructions, and before she knew it, she was being engulfed by green flames. Before she could get used to the feeling of being trapped inside of a straw, she was tumbling out of the hearth in the Headmaster's office.
Coughing, she stood and brushed the soot from her clothes and was startled when a voice suddenly greeted her.
"You must be Miss Granger." the kind tone of Albus Dumbledore said. She could almost hear the smile in his voice. She turned and faced him. He hadn't changed a bit. Dressed from head to floor in flamboyantly bright magenta and gold robes and a matching hat, he smiled at her from behind his desk. "I'm glad you came so quickly. Please, take a seat."
Hermione nodded and did as she was asked. "So you know, sir... This isn't going to be easy for me to explain... Let alone, for you to believe..."
Albus chuckled. "I've seen and heard many things that would have one believing they've gone around the twist, Miss Granger. I invite you to try me." he winked at her; his x-ray-like eyes peering at her over his spectacles.
Hermione took a deep breath, and launched herself into what felt like a six hour explanation of Tom Riddle's Horcruxes, the prophecy, Harry, James, and Lily Potter, Harry becoming an orphan because of the prophecy. She told him where to find every last Horcrux, though admitted they could be in different places during this time period. She explained what each of them were, and how to destroy them.
Albus remained calm during her explanation, lightly tapping the tips of his fingers together as he listened to every last detail.
"Miss Granger, if I may ask... Why is it that you've come back here then? If Voldemort is destroyed in the future, why come back to destroy him again?" Albus asked; Hermione having left out the part about him and Severus dying for the greater good.
"Well...-" Hermione took another deep breath. "You see, sir... You and Severus Snape die on the night of Voldemort's final downfall. Severus becomes your trusted friend and ally, and he plays both sides as a spy for you.-" Hermione gestured toward the wand laying to Albus' right on the desktop, "- Voldemort kills Severus over the wand. The Elder Wand. Because you destroy Tom Riddle's cursed Ring, it curses your hand, and you have only a year to live. So you tell Severus he must be the one to kill you to fully gain Voldemort's trust. Only... The wand doesn't ever belong to Severus. It answers to Harry Potter. Severus... dies for no reason..." she whispered the last part.
"Why do I get the feeling that you have come back here to save Severus? Do you love him in the future?" Albus asked softly.
Hermione nodded slowly. "Yes... Very much so... I know, teacher-student thing... But... It didn't go on very long. He... died before we had a chance to progress further. So, yes, I've come back for him. Along with many other reasons though. I want Harry to grow up with his parents instead of his horrible muggle family... I want you to live as well." Hermione chuckled softly. "I want to see Severus grow up to be as gray as you are. No offense."
Albus nodded, smiling. "Okay then, Miss Granger. What are your intentions from here on out? Do you intend to attend school here at Hogwarts? How old are you, 17?"
Hermione nodded again. "Yes... I'd love nothing more than to be able to go to school with Severus... Hopefully if I change his mind about life in general, he'll strive for something better than becoming a Death Eater. I don't want him to hurt any more than he did in... my time..."
"Okay, Miss Granger. I will take close note and pull my thoughts for the Penseive, and study it all very closely, but I beg you to help me in this endeavor. Can you do that?" Albus asked.
"Of course. Anything..." Hermione nodded.
"Good. You may go then... I will see you, mid September."
Hermione rose from her seat and was making her way to the door before she heard Albus speak again. "Oh, and Miss Granger... It would be best to tell Severus everything you've just told me... He may be young in this time, but he is very understanding. Highly intelligent lad, he is. Show him any proof that you can to uphold your story. Good day to you." he smiled at her with a small nod.
-----
Hermione apparated to Spinner's End just as the sun was setting, casting a pink hue over the small community. The wind blew a nice breeze and she smiled happily as she walked along, ready to knock on the Snape's door once more. Suddenly, out of nowhere, two cold hands shot over her mouth and her eyes, pulling her into a darkened alley not far from her destination. Struggling hard against her attacker, she managed to grab her wand but before she could fire a hex over her shoulder, a familiar voice calmed her nerves.
"Shh... It's me... Severus..." he said quietly, releasing her as he did.
"You scared the shite out of me! It isn't as if Spinner's End isn't dodgy enough. What was that for?" she demanded hotly.
Severus smirked as he folded his arms over his chest, leaning back against a brick wall in the dingy alley.
"I want to know exactly who you are." he replied; his tone sounding low and dangerous as he narrowed his black glittering stare.
Hermione sighed as she unzipped her beaded bag and withdrew a simple fold up chair. She looked up at Severus, noting the amused expression on his face. "Don't laugh at me." she blushed, setting the chair down. With a flick of her wand, she transfigured it into a rather comfortable looking sofa.
"Sit... This is going to take a while."
"What?" Severus asked, confused.
"Just... Please..."
Severus did as he was asked and took a seat next to Hermione.
"Do you really want to know who I am?" she asked, turning sideways on the sofa to face him before casting a muffliato and a disillusionment charm over the area. The last thing she wanted was for someone to walk by, seeing the two of the perched awkwardly on a rather out-of-place sofa in the middle of a dark alleyway.
Severus nodded. "Of course..."
Again, Hermione launched herself into her long winded explanation. It was stark black in the small community by the time she finished. Severus sat, quiet and dumbfounded. She was prepared for him to ask the same thing that Albus had.
"If the Dark Lord is destroyed in your time, why come back?" he asked.
Again, Hermione breathed in deep. "You were my teacher. You taught Potions. You were always really foul and rude to me, but as I got older, I realized there was something more to you. Like... You hid something deep inside. Something that you were afraid to show anyone else. After His downfall, we all saw it in the Penseive... How much you loved Lily Evans, and did everything for her. You died for her, Severus..."
Severus sat, quietly still as he hung his head. She wasn't sure if he was weeping or not. If he was, he was doing a good job at hiding it. Hermione placed a loving hand on his shoulder. "But it doesn't have to be like that, Severus... With everything that I know, you don't have to do anything. Do you want to know more?" she asked softly.
Severus nodded. "Yes... Tell me everything."
Hermione turned to her bag, unzipping it once more. She withdrew the little green leather-bound journal and handed it to him. Lighting the tip of her wand, she pointed it at the pages to illuminate them. "Skip ahead to the last page, Severus. Your last entry."
Severus did as he was told and she watched his eyes grow wide as he read over his own handwriting in the reflected light, bouncing off of the white pages.
"You loved me..." he whispered, slowly averting his eyes from the pages to her face. Hermione nodded. "I still do, Severus... Everything about your life... Was just so unfair."
"So..." he began slowly, "You left behind everything you ever knew and loved... For me?" his eyes were full of gratitutde, and quite understandably, disbelief.
Hermione nodded slowly. "Yes. All I wanted was to give you a fair shot... And I would do it again..." she whispered.
"You and I,-" Severus nervously cleared his throat. "We er... Were together... intimately?" he asked.
Hermione smiled, blushing as she nodded. "Yes."
"Well..." Severus sat back on the sofa, letting himself relax against it. "It's comforting to know I didn't die a virgin then."
"I seriously doubt you were a virgin before me, Severus. That's so odd to say right now..." Hermione laughed.
"Well, I suppose we'll just have to pour over this journal then, to find out the truth on that subject. You will be at Hogwarts this year, yes?"
Hermione nodded again. "Yes, but... If I wind up in Gryffindor... Don't hate me. Please?" she grinned sheepishly.
"Obviously, I couldn't hate you even if I wanted to." he smirked at her. "I'd best be getting back inside though. My father isn't - well... I suppose you probably know."
"Yes," Hermione said, sadly. "Yes, I know... Can I... maybe have a small hug before you go? It's odd for me to say it, but Merlin, I've missed you so much."
Severus smiled sadly, sitting up to let Hermione wrap her arms around him. He closed his eyes, feeling his heart flutter with a strange feeling as she lovingly stroked his hair, holding him close, and tight. "I don't want to let you go..." she whispered before breathing deep, allowing his familiar scent to fill her senses. "God, I don't want to let you go..."
Severus drew his arms tighter around her as if to agree to the sentiment. He wasn't sure why he felt so much for her already. Even though she knew him, he didn't know her. Not really. But, it was chemical as soon as he laid eyes on her, standing there looking so unsure of herself on his parent's doorstep.
As if she had read his mind, Hermione asked: "Can we spend more time together during the remains of the summer?"
"Do you really have to ask?" he asked softly, nuzzling his face into her wild hair.
"I'm just making sure..." she whispered before slowly, regrettably drawing away from him. "I'll see you tomorrow then." she promised him as he also rose from the transfigured sofa.
"Tomorrow then." Severus nodded. Without another word, he turned and quickly swept from the alley, desperate to get inside before his father's anger had the chance to reach a boiling point.
Hermione slept better that night than she had in months.
