Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter, nor any of the characters from the books or movies. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
AN: Here we go, on to the fun. I can't believe it has been a year since I started this. Sorry.
Jordan C: Here's what you were waiting for. Hope it's up to your expectations.Sailor Sol: Just getting started, Mom. I've got most of this one mapped out, but I'm flexible about details and willing to take suggestions under advisement. In fact, one suggestion I got from a reviewer on Chameleon's song, is going to be the basis for another possible series. Hope you're up for that, too.PS. Are you the same Sailor_sol who wrote “Not as it Seems”? I love that fic. Everyone should go find it. Will you be finishing it?
Jan: There will be more from Umballa, as well as other dragons and mini-lizards. I think you'll like my new world here in Africa.Minervaq: This is why I try to keep my stories to less than thirty chapters. I've spoken to other fanfic writers, and readers, and we agree that more than that will put us off of reading a story, no matter how good. It's like the author doesn't know how to wrap things up. I felt that way when I ended Chameleon's song, but wouldn't let it go any longer. These stories are my response to that problem. Hope you continue to love them.Chapter Two: Tiny Dragon
Charlie woke to the sound of something scratching against the wall. The humidity was up and a breeze moved through the open window. When he sat up, he noticed movement toward the door, near where his luggage had been dropped. He looked down and saw a small green lizard scamper across the floor and up onto his empty suitcase.“Well, hello.”
The lizard sat up, holding its front legs in the air and watching him curiously. Even as he watched it, the tiny eyes went from black dots to hazel green and its scales faded out to a sandy brown with orange edges.
“That's amazing. Can you do any other colors?” Charlie asked and the tiny reptile leaned forward and flicked its tongue out a few times. The brown of its scales darkened and the orange turned bright blue over the black background. The beady eyes looked back a him in a dull yellow tint.
Charlie laughed and clapped his hands, making the lizard jump back and regain its sea green scales and pitch black eyes. “Oh, sorry. I was just so excited. I've never seen anything as talented as you.” Charlie leaned closer and whispered. “And I've worked with dragons.”
The little beast scurried forwards and up the red-haired man's arm and curled around his neck, tickling him with its tongue and toes.
“Hey, what gives? You can't stay there.”
Another sound distracted him from the reptile on his shoulders. Someone was outside of his room, opening the door carefully in an attempt at stealth. Charlie had his wand in his hand before the door had clicked open.
“Don't try it.” He called as the door swung away and a man stood there with a wand that looked like a small branch, complete with three leaves, in his hand. “Put it down.”
“I mean you no harm.” The stranger said.
“Hard to believe, when you still have your wand out. Put it down and we can talk.” Charlie held his wand in an offensive posture and the stranger stepped back. “I'm very good with quick spells, so you should probably not try anything.”
Before he had finished speaking, the stranger had spun in place and disappeared, leaving Charlie to stare at the empty doorway. The little lizard popped its head up and looked at the dragon tamer.
“At least he's gone.”
“Who's gone?” Charlie dove through the door and into Chris' arms.
“Chris, I've missed you.” Charlie took the darker wizard's face in his hands and kissed him hard. When the separated for breath, Chris pulled away.
“We cannot. I shouldn't be here. I wanted to explain to you, before things began to move too fast for it.”
“So, explain.” Charlie dropped onto the bed, arms crossed and face hard. “Start with how I'm supposed to pick four champions to court me.”
“It is tradition. Until you have known enough of our eligible men, they will not believe you have truly chosen a mate. Your champions will have to prove their worth, by showing physical strength, magical power and intellect. There are tests planned for us to compete in and you are the only judge of the outcome. Though others may decide to approach those you cast off, once the courtship is over.”
“Why men?” Charlie asked.
“What do you mean?”
“Why do I have to choose from only men?”
“They meant to appease your preferences.”
“But, I don't prefer men. I've dated both men and women. I love you, but not because you're a man. More like regardless of that fact.”
“If you wish for females to be offered, my father will arrange it.”
“No, that's fine. I just wondered. I'm gonna pick you, Chris. Don't make this harder for me.”
“Do not say that in front of the suitors or my father and uncle. Until you are given the choice, you must be open to all suitors.”
“I got that. Tell me about the tests.”
“There will be several to show each skill use. Tests of intellect, of physical or magical strength. Some will combine both, to show that the contestant is capable of intellect, while performing strenuous or magical acts. As I said, there is no obvious winner. Only your opinion counts.”
“That's the only part that gives me any comfort. I really wish you had warned me. It's all so frustrating.” Charlie slammed his hand on the nightstand and rattled the small lamp there. The forgotten lizard on his shoulders squawked and scurried onto his head, chirping a scolding down at his face. It had turned pure white with red and orange eyes.
“Okay, I'm sorry. Stop clawing my scalp.”
Chris had fallen back against the door and stared with wide eyes. “Where did that come from?”
“It crawled through the wall, I think. It likes me, sometimes.”
“Charlie, that is a Dogo Nyoka. They are often called good luck dragons and hewa munju. It is very rare to find one and a female is the rarest.”
“It's a female?”
“Yes. She is a queen hewa munju, a lady god of the air. The males are much smaller. Only the size of your fist. I've never seen one before.”
“So, Dogo Nyoka. Little Snake. Well, she's beautiful. If she's gonna hang around, I should name her. I'll call her Zuri.”
“Zuri? Beautiful. It fits.” Chris put a hand out, inching it closer to the creature's head. Zuri eyed him and when his fingers were withing biting range, she tilted her head and rubbed it against them, cooing softly at him. “She's so soft. Her scales are so small that you can barely feel them.” he exclaimed.
“What would you expect from a princess dragon?” Charlie said and Chris laughed.
“I need to go. My father will be here, soon. Charlie, I love you. Don't forget.”
“I won't. I love you, too.”
The Drow prince slipped out so silently that Charlie barely heard the door click shut. He stroked Zuri's head as he considered the things he had learned this morning. As he thought, he remembered his dream and the words of the other dragon queen. “Do you know Umballa, Zuri?” he asked and the lizard hissed and turned yellow with brown eyes. “Okay, so you don't care much for big dragons. I'll protect you.”
Zuri rubbed her head along his cheek and Charlie chuckled at her antics. He watched her lean into his hand when he scratched her neck.
A soft rap on the door preceded Halla'an calling out, “Charlie Weasley?” and Zuri disappeared. He could still feel her talons in his shoulder, so he knew she was still there, just invisible.
“I guess you're shy. That explains why not many have seen you.” He whispered before calling out, “I'm here, Mr. Kunzaii.”
The door opened and Chris' father came inside. “It is time to go. Are you ready for a tour?”
Charlie followed Halla'an around the village noting how modern things were. Though his first impression had led him to believe that these people were less civilized than the wizards of the British Isles, in reality, this place was quite up to date. The dress was casual, and sometimes sparse, but their conversation and manners were on par with the current times and many were well versed on muggle scientific theory and research.
As they traversed the streets, Charlie listened to the dialogue around him and the words of the king's brother beside him.
“This is our High Pavilion. It is here that we will hear your choice of suitors and your final decision. The temple there is where our young people have their early schooling. At thirteen, they move on to the Adult Temple, down that way, and learn the more complex magic and life skills. The small pyramids between are for gatherings of the town leaders and law makers.”
Charlie noted the places and correlated them to the Wizengamut, Ministry, Hogwarts and his early schooling at Olmeck's Early Learning Academy. It was a small facility in Ottery St. Catchpole. The differences here were the sizes and locations, since the Mozambique community stayed closer together and the British students went far away to learn.
“What is that big pyramid for?” Charlie asked as they passed the smaller ones.
“That is a housing place. There is where elite warriors and the most powerful families live.”
“Do you live there?” Charlie said.
“Why, yes.” Halla'an stammered. “I do.”
“And King Mumbaii?”
“He also lives there.”
“That's nice.” Charlie turned away and walked toward a market place that was bustling with people and stalls of food and goods. Another pyramid, the smallest he had seen, was nearby and many people came and went. “What's in there?”
“That is Wombelle's, our goblin bank. They are affiliated with your London Bank, and the ones in France, Italy and Bulgaria.”
“Really? My brother works with the bank in Britain. I'd like to see it.”
“That you may, later. Now, we must go to the quidditch plaza. There is a game planned for today. The teams are made up of our best players. Do you like the game?”
“Like it? I used to play seeker for my house team. My older brother was captain and my younger brothers were chasers and a keeper.”
“So, there is talent in your family. Very good. Come, we must hurry.”
The game was long, but very exciting. The blue team won by thirty points when their seeker caught the snitch, but the other team had played better overall, chalking up one hundred and twenty points during the game.Charlie was impressed.
The yellow team captain, a big man with dancing eyes, dimpled cheeks and a welcoming smile was named Johnny Mumbassa and he shook Charlie's hand with enthusiasm when they were introduced after the game. Chris was one of his chasers.
“Your team played wonderfully. If that seeker hadn't caught the snitch when he did, you would have won for sure.”
“I have a good team.” Johnny said. “If Chris had been training with us, and I was not without my regular seeker, we would have won.”
"You were using a replacement seeker?" Charlie asked, looking over at the man who had played that position.
"Yes. We had to. Our seeker is a mated man. Only those eligible to be chosen may play today."
"This was for me?" Charlie glared at the seeker for a second, then let his features soften and shook his head. "Then, it has begun. I enjoyed the game, Captain Mumbassa. I hope to see you play again."
"Our teams play once more after the choosing. This time, my team will be intact. This time, we will win."
"Good. I'll be looking forward to it. Now, I must congratulate your opponent." Charlie shook Johnny's hand and went to meet the captain of the winning team.
Kenzie Ontalla was smaller than Johnny, and he reminded Charlie of Harry. He was friendly and generously admitted that if he hadn't caught the snitch his team would have lost. Charlie found he liked Kenzie, no matter how he wanted to find all of the young men lacking. The blue team's seeker/captain was just too nice not to befriend.
They were laughing about a quidditch story Kenzie was telling, where the snitch had gone out of the pitch area and been swallowed by one of Umballa's mates then the seeker had jumped onto the dragon's back to claim a catch and it had taken the judges three days to debate the results and declare his team a win, when Halla'an came up with King Macombii.
"Kenzei is more than just a seeker and the captain of a winning team. He is my son. Manchrisaii's cousin."
"Oh, really?" Charlie was nearly speechless as he turned to the man. "You're Prince Kenzei?"
"Not today. My father knows he should not have spoken of this. All men are equal in a courtship competition. Please, try to disregard this information."
"It's an important thing to know. It's part of who you are. I'm glad he said something now. If I didn't know, I might get some wrong ideas about you. Chris told me the first day I met him, too." It actually bothered Charlie that Kenzei wanted to keep it from him, more than the information itself.
"I do not want you to judge me by my father's position. I am a man, not a child dependent on his father."
"But your character has been shaped by your upbringing. Not knowing who your father is, I might find traits you display unfavorable because of the assumptions I would make. Those same traits are understandable in the son of a king."
"You think I am a spoiled man who has lived in luxury? You think I am weak, because of privileges given to the son of Macombii Ontalla?"
"I didn't say that!" Charlie was getting heated and wished he could go somewhere and be alone . . or with Chris, who always made him feel calm. "You do have a quick temper, though!"
"Kenzei Ontalla! You shame your family." The king shouted, but Charlie was surprised at how soft his shout was. His voice carried no farther than the small circle gathered around them, but everyone within its influence was stunned to silence.
The king very rarely had to shout.
Charlie turned to Halla'an and cleared his throat. The king's brother looked up. "Where to next?" he asked and the entire group looked his way.
