Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter, nor any of the characters from the books or movies. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
AN: If these stories take some time, I'll have to blame it on my perverse need to update all four each time. Sorry, or maybe not. Sorry, this one took longer than the others. Now, I've got to start on the Chapter threes.
ChaosLady: Oh, yes!
Jordan C: OMG, I'll do my best.
Sailor_Sol: I think that I'm gonna state something here that may sound irrelevant. I really hate that term, Peachy. So, you got my attention. So-K, this is not gonna be Harry's story, he has Chameleon's Castle. If the twins get involved, so will Harry, but right now, this story is gonna require that the involved Weasley males, with some help from the various Weasley women folk, get outta this on their own. It may take a bit for the true extent of their problems to be clear, but that's called “Plot Complications” and I plan a bunch of em.
Minervaq: They might just think they're doing their job. Oh, and the Weasley's will be resourceful, of course.
Chapter Two: Penelope Clearwater Weasley and Eloise Midgeon Weasley
At their flat in London, Penelope was fire-calling Molly to ask if Percy had stopped there on the way home, but the older woman was in no condition to speak. Arthur came into the flames. “Penny, they've all gone missing. Percy, Bill, Fleur and Ron. Eloise said they were attacked and Shell Cottage is burned to the ground. We don't know what happened. The aurors couldn't catch any of the wizards that attacked Ron's place.”
“Oh, God. But, Percy works at the Ministry. How could he have been attacked before he could come home?”
“That's a good question. It had to have been something there. I'll check and see what I can find out. Stay home, or come through to the burrow. Eloise is here, with Molly and Ginny, for now.”
“I could go home, but I think I'll come there. Let me just pack a few things. I'll be there in about an hour.”
“I'll tell Molly. She'll be glad to have you.”
“I'll hurry.”
A rattling sound woke the two older Weasley's, but Bill and Percy pretended sleep, and Ron slept like a stone. A man walked past their cubicles, then continued on after peering in for a second. The rattling returned and then there was silence.
“Bill?” Percy called.
“Yeah. I'm here. Ronald?” there was only the sound of snores, so Bill ignored his youngest brother. “They don't seem to have gotten the twins. Is Penny safe?”
“I don't know. I was headed home. I haven't contacted her.”
“We have to assume she's fine. Ron said something in his sleep about Eloise running. I think she got free before he was taken. He sounded smug.” Bill nearly smiled at his baby brother's sleep talking.
“He doesn't do that much, does he?” Percy joked, rolling his eyes, though no one saw him. “What are they gonna do to us, Bill?”
“I don't know. They got Fleur.” the last was a wistful statement, not requiring a response. “At least, Charlie is safe . . . in Bulgaria.” Bill said with inflection on the last word.
Percy caught on and repeated. “Yeah, in Bulgaria, no one will get him.” the two fell silent, not knowing what else to say and hoping their younger brother was smart enough to keep the truth a secret. “I wonder what they'll do to us.”
The room was dark except for the crack in the door where it had not closed completely. Light filtered in from down the hall and stairs where voices joined the fireplace blaze and came up from the Weasley kitchen.Eloise rolled over and crawled out of bed to close the door, when she heard the voice of her in-laws distinctly mentioning herself and Ron. She leaned on the frame and closed her eyes to allow her to focus on the words spoken by the Weasleys.
“Kingsley doesn't think it was Death Eaters.”
“Then, who?” Molly's voice rose in angry challenge, which was a relief after the last few hours of her grief.
“He thinks . . . 'this smells like Unspeakables.' was his quote. If it is, he might not be able to get much by asking about the boys, so he's searching for Fleur. Veela are protected and even the Unspeakables can't hold one.”
“But, what about my boys?”
“If they have Fleur, and she was taken at the same time as Bill, then he has proof to investigate further.”
“And, if it comes out?” Molly didn't need to elaborate. The whole family knew what her greatest fear was. What everyone feared. A shiver of that fear danced up Eloise's spine. She felt a flutter in her belly and her hand rose to rest her palm against it. She shushed the growing child with a cooing sound as she rubbed the spot.
Downstairs Molly and Arthur continued to discuss the fate of their missing sons, while Eloise made some speculations of her own. “Department of Mysteries . . .” she whispered. “I wonder.” She hurried across the room and dug into the bag she had grabbled when the attack started.
It had been a gift from Hermione Granger on Eloise's last birthday and the other witch had winked at her about the way that a girl could take full advantage of a bag such as this. Eloise planned to hide presents in it so that Ron and the children would be surprised on Christmas and holidays.
Now, she remembered that she had used it to store the things from the room she and Ron were preparing to use as a nursery. They had never emptied it, and now, it would have just the item she was looking for in its depths.
This box, a cube really, had been charmed by Ginny Weasley to share with her friends, including the Patil sisters, Raven Goldstein and Romilda Vane. Eloise had a blue one that glowed in her hands as she placed it on the end table near the bed.
“Ellie?”
“What's wrong?” Padma's voice was softer than her sister, and she tended to be more pragmatic. Above the cube the smoky images floated and looked around as if to assess her surroundings.
“Ron's gone. He and two of his brothers were captured by wizards. His father thinks they might be prisoners of the Department of Mysteries.”
“Really?”
“Oh, Ellie. You poor dear. I bet Father could find out something,” this time it was Parvati who managed the longer part of their conversation.
“Bill, Percy, Ron and Fleur are all missing. Arthur spoke with the Minister, and they've talked about calling Mr. Malfoy.” Eloise knew her friends' creature, and they were aware of hers. She would never tell another's secrets, so the Weasleys were in no danger from her, but Padma had found out about the Malfoy's lineage somewhere else.
“Fleur?” A familiar whistling sound emitted from Parvati's smoky lips. “Bold move. And Very illegal.”
“Father will have words about this. Stay safe, Ellie. We'll call back tomorrow.”
“Okay, thanks Padma, Parvati.” Eloise put her palm on the top of the cube and the glowing stopped. She put it in her bag and sidled up to the door, cracked it open and listened to the voices from downstairs.
Penelope had arrived and was comforting Ginny and her mother as the man made the final arguments about his next course of action.
Arthur knelt before the fireplace and drew a deep breath. The sobs of the three women behind him firmed his resolution and he shook off the last wave of fear.
He could do this.
Leaning forward until he could feel the heat of the fire, he called out, “Lucius Malfoy, at Malfoy Manor.”
A Malfoy did not panic. It was a mantra his father had taught him, and usually it had the desired effect of calming him down at this point of concern, but today, it had none.As he paced the parlor, Lucius was surrounded by the females in his family, his wife, his mother and his youngest daughters, as they waited to hear from his son and oldest daughter.
The floo flared and Lucius froze, turning toward the flames in slow motion. The face that formed made his facial expression drop and reform into the blank mask he was known for.
“Weasley, what do you want?”
“We need to talk, Lucius . . . . about the family connection we share. Can you come through? All of you?”
“To your home? Why would we want to do that?”
“I have reason to believe the manor does not have the same strength of wards that we have added to the burrow. Eyes are looking.”
A twinge was the only trace of a reaction that Lucius showed to the red haired man's words. “We will come through.”
When Arthur disappeared, Lucius gathered his family to him. “There is a chance this will be a trap. Surround your mother and prepare to use your allure to protect her. I will owl Maurice, before we leave.”
It was Amandrienne who reacted most to her father's words. Lucius never referred to Draco that way, unless it was terrible news, or danger was imminent. The last time, it was the arrival of Voldemort into their home. A veela had special ways to keep their minds safe from outward intrusion, but words could be used by others who heard them. She suppressed the shiver that threatened to crawl up her spine and turned to her twin.
Gabrielle was a few seconds younger, but closer to full veela than Mandie, and her allure was stronger, but she lacked the sharp instincts toward self-preservation that Mandie had in tens. This was likely the reason that Mandie had been sorted into Slytherin, while her twin had been placed in Ravenclaw, for it was not that she lacked the intelligence for the house of Rowena.
Her expression was proof that she hadn't caught the significance of her father's choice of name. Mandie knew better than to speak out, having learned the value of discretion, so she merely raised one eyebrow when her twin turned her way and watched the realization take hold and smiled at the other veela girl.
All of this took only a heartbeat and while they communicated silently, their father had penned a missive to their brother, with a brief explanation and a security spell that was attached to Gabby's horned owl, Friedrick, and sent on its way.
They were all moving to the floo to make the trip to the Weasley house, while Lucius watched the bird disappear through the highest window of the sitting parlor they were in. The hearth they stepped out onto was worn, but clean, and the room smelled of biscuits and honey.
Mandie was the last to enter, bringing up the rear, as the characters in the American muggle movies she and her sister loved to watch. She looked up to see three red-heads watching them and one was gesturing for them to sit. Mandie plopped down onto a soft looking chair that was even better than it looked.
Eloise waited until she heard a new voice, then she hurried through the door and down the stairs, toward the sitting room where the rest of the family was gathered.
The green flames were just subsiding around a young girl in Ravenclaw colors when she stopped and took a position next to Ginny. The tall blond man was sizing up her father-in-law while the fireplace spit out even more Malfoys.
Lucius stood as his family found places around the room, and when the man, Arthur, her father called him, took his place next to the grandmotherly woman, he finally chose a stiff-backed chair near Gabby.
“What do you know, Arthur?”
“I know that there is no way that this was rogue Death Eaters or common wizards. Too organized, but Kingsley swears it wasn't aurors.”
“What about Fleur?”
“Missing, along with Bill.”
“Zut alors! Tell me the details.” Lucius leaned forward and listened intently. Mandie was shocked at her fathers words, even in French, he was above using commoner expletives. She looked around at the faces of these Weasleys, especially the one that gave up the least information, getting her attention by the shear lack of emotion on her face.
Eloise had found a chair in the far corner, there she took in all the words, the inflections and the expressions, though these were few on the part of the Malfoys, but she was developing a picture of the family, one that had ties to her now, with the two marriage that linked them. She noticed a pair of steel-grey eyes watching her and returned the stare with the younger Malfoy/Delacour girl.
Mandie nodded slightly, almost a non-move of her head, but Eloise returned it to prove she had understood the message. When the adults, Molly, Arthur, Lucius, Narcissa and Grand-mère, gathered in a smaller knot of conversation, the two slipped away and met at the back door of the kitchen, where they could hear the voices, but not be heard if they were quiet.
“What do you know, that you are not sharing?” Mandie said in a bold move.
“I know that they'll argue for too long, so I've already begun my own investigation. My husband was taken, and they tried to get me, so I think I know what they want.”
“Why my sister?” Mandie narrowed her eyes at the lack of information she was getting.
“Because they hope that Fleur has . . . . my condition.” Eloise placed a hand on the barely there bump of her growing child. Mandie let the hand catch her eyes and they widened only slightly in realization.
“Fleur would not allow that this early in her marriage. She is proud of her union, but would never let speculation rise as to the reason for their choice. They do not know my sister.” Her righteous indignation was lost on the Gryffindor girl.
“They don't care about her. Gods, you snakes think too much. They want to do. . . things to the babies. They want to know things about the . . . Weasleys.”
“Because of their creatures?” Mandie asked and Eloise looked around with a paranoid deliberation. “No one is here. There is no way that I would speak of something so dangerous where it could be overheard. Now, tell me. What is your line?”
“I'm no Veela, that's for sure.”
“I am aware of that.” Mandie was nearly insulted by this girl, but Eloise just glared.
“I have fae in my line. Ron and I discussed the possibilities. I could bear true.”
“So, you could be carrying the children they need. And your brothers . . . They have not caught Harry's mates?” Mandie had come to the one conclusion that had tortured her father. He was worried for her brother because of Draco's mate's connection to the Weasleys.
“They caught Bill, Ron and Percy. That's Penny. She's Percy's wife. She was at home and not pregnant, either. It's only me and the twins, so far.”
“So, I see what my father's fears are. Harry will keep them safe. Has Monsieur Weasley sent word to him?”
“They flooed the castle. No one was captured, and they're locked up tight. No one will get to the twins. Or your brother.”
“This explains much. The owl may not get through. That would be why mon père could not contact Maurice. We should return soon. What else do you know?”
“I know that I have a friend, who's father works for the Dept of Mysteries. He's an Unreachable. They work near the Unspeakables, but not directly with them. The Unreachables are in charge of regulating the experiments done, to assure that not too much power goes to any of them. She's gonna tell her father about Fleur. No matter what they want Ron and his brothers for, there are laws about Veela. If she's there, he'll find her.”
“We need to go, now.” Mandie pushed Eloise toward the family, and though she was older and bigger than the Slytherin, Ellie went easily, being herded with amazing force by the smaller girl.
Ron woke with a start, his head hurt and his arm was stiff and unresponsive, but his mind jumped to attention with amazing ease. He rolled over and worked to his knees with stealth and surveyed the cell and what he could see through the bars of his cage.
A cough came from just past the bars and to the left. He leaned closer, recognizing the sound. “Percy?”
“Yeah, Ron!” Percy was close, like he was leaning against the wall of Ron's cell. “Bill, Ron's awake. How are you, little brother?”
“Got a knot on my head and my arms useless. I think I got hit with a paralizing jinx. How about you?”
“That's no jinx, Ron. That's Morbid Retractus. It's a curse. They got my foot. That's how I lost Fleur. I couldn't run, and we fell.”
“Who else is here?” Ron closed his eyes, trying to concentrate around the pain in his head.
“Just us. They kept it local, I think. They're not likely to go all the way to Bulgaria to get Charlie, and the twins are safe in Dublin. Ginny was home. She's safe, too.”
“Good thing about Charlie. I hope he doesn't decide to come for a visit.” Ron knew where his brothers were, so did Bill and Percy. This was tactical and he could understand tactics. “What have they done, while I was out?”
“Nothin' yet.” Percy supplied. “Just stuck us in here and left. You've been out for hours.”
“Kay, thanks. I feel better, being up-to-date.”
“Dad will get us out, Ron. Don't worry.” Bill tried, though he wasn't sure where they were, or how his parents would find them. Ron could hear that in Bill's voice, but he didn't have time to worry about one brother's fears. He had two brothers and a sister-in-law to save.
