Chapter 1: Not Just another Day at the Office
~~~Chapter Begins~~~ The year was AC 197. The war was over, the Barton Foundation had recently been completely defeated, and the Gundams and all other mobile suits were gone for good. Life for the people of the still newly formed Earth Sphere Unified Nation had mostly gone back to normal. The heroes who had stopped the war and the Barton Foundation were just starting to get used to the idea that they could live without fighting. One particular pilot had found his calling within the newly formed Preventers Agency. Chang Wufei, former pilot of the Gundam Shenlong, was offered a place with the Preventers because of his ability as a soldier.His first assignment was to help his new partner, Agent Water, and her team take down a small group of rebels who had been caught selling and buying illegal mobile suit parts. Their base, located on colony L4 M-35621, took less than two weeks to locate. All that remained was to neutralize the threat.
For once there wasn’t any static distorting the sounds being heard over the small communication devices the Preventers used. It was a refreshing change from how the coms normally worked. It made communicating so much easier when people didn’t have to repeat themselves multiple times whenever it was time to make a report.
“Agents, report.”
“We have secured the rebels, Agent Water.”
“Inventory is being taken as we speak, Agent Water.”
“Thank you Agent Copper, Agent Ice. Agent Shenlong, report.”
“Agent Water, I’ve covered all but one side of the perimeter. I’ll be done shortly. Hold on. I think I may have found something.”
“What is it Agent Shenlong?”
There was no response for several minutes.
“Agent Shenlong, report or I’ll have to send others to your position.”
“A-Agent Water, I may need your medical expertise. There’s an injured civilian.”
“Where are you Agent Shenlong?”
“Southwest corner of the building. Just down the alley from the door on the south side of the building. You might want to hurry.”
Agent Shenlong had seen much in his short life, he wasn’t rattled easily. Yet he sounded shocked by whatever it was he had found. It was enough to put Agent Water on edge as she grabbed her medical kit and headed in his direction. She was shocked by what she found when she arrived at his location.
The boy couldn’t have been more than fourteen or fifteen. He looked underfed and covered in dirt. The large wound on the back of his head was coated in nearly dried blood. The situation would be odd enough if the boy was just a dirty, underfed, injured 14 or 15-year-old. But he wasn’t a normal boy. Normal boys didn’t have black furry cat ears on top of their heads instead of normal human ears located on the sides of the head. Normal boys also didn’t have tails.
“It looks like someone hit him over the head with something. I don’t know what to make of his… added… appendages. I’ve never seen a person with real cat ears and a real tail. I’ve checked them; they seem to be one-hundred percent real. Agent Water, do you think he might be a victim of that criminal geneticist we’ve been looking for?”
She shrugged as she began cleaning the teenage boy’s head wound. It wasn’t as bad as it could have been. It would need medical attention at a hospital though. The ears and tail were a completely different matter.
“I have no idea Agent Shenlong. I honestly have no idea. If he is, he would be the first to survive whatever hellish experiments that monster likes to perform on his victims.” She pressed on her com. “HQ, I need a bus sent our mission location, southwest corner of the building. We have an injured John Doe that needs medical care. He is unconscious, with a large laceration on the back of his head. No other apparent wounds.”
“Roger that Agent. Ambulance is headed to your location.”
Agent Water pressed a clean piece of gauze to the back of the unknown boy’s head to make sure the wound wasn’t bleeding anymore as they waited for the ambulance to arrive. Agent Shenlong kept his weapon ready just in case the assailant who attacked the young boy had not been among the rebels apprehended in the warehouse. It wouldn’t help the boy if they were attacked before they could get him to safety. Thankfully, it didn’t take long for the ambulance to arrive.
“I will be going with them to treat our John Doe. Agent Shenlong, you may be new to the Preventers, but you’re more experienced than most of the other agents employed by the Agency. I’m putting you in charge of finishing this mission. Report to Lady Une once you’ve finished up here and then come find me in the hospital. And Agent Shenlong, when you report to Lady Une let her know that I’ll be reporting to her as soon as I’ve finished stabilizing our John Doe here.”
Agent Shenlong nodded and helped the paramedics get the young boy into the ambulance before heading back into the warehouse to finish the mission. Agent Water climbed into to the ambulance after the young teen had been loaded into it.
The mission had nearly been over when Agent Shenlong found the boy, so it didn’t take very long for them to load the captured rebels into a transport vehicle and send them to the local HQ. Cataloging the exact parts currently located in the warehouse and packing them into their own transport vehicles took a little bit longer, but they were still finished with the job within a reasonable amount of time. From there the only thing left to do was follow Agent Water’s instructions about reporting to Lady Une.
Lady Une was the highest ranking member of the Preventers Agency. The only person she reported to was the President of the Earth Sphere Unified Nation. She was in charge of all of the operations the Preventers took part in. She also liked being on hand for each major mission. That was why she made sure that the Preventers had stable, full time functioning HQs on every colony. She would want to know absolutely everything about the mission as well as everything he knew about the John Doe they had found. Her office was always on the top floor of the building. Some of the Preventer agents hated the elevator ride up, mostly because they hated what inevitably came after that ride. It wasn’t that Lady Une treated her subordinates badly; it was just that there were enough Preventer Agents who had served under her when she was known as the infamous Commander Une of the Organization of the Zodiac. She wasn’t that woman anymore, but it didn’t stop the former OZ soldiers who were now Preventers from being terrified of her despite declaring that they weren’t.
Agent Shenlong was one of the Preventer Agents that wasn’t afraid of her. He had faced down much worse than Commander Une, and Lady Une was much gentler than Commander Une. Lady Une was a master strategist and an experienced diplomat. She was a peaceful woman, who chose her line of work because she didn’t want to see another war break out. Agent Shenlong respected her strategic ability as well as her strong desire for peace combined with her ability to keep the peace. So, instead of freaking out during the ride up to her office, he used that time to calmly contemplate the mission he was reporting on. When the elevator arrived at the top floor Agent Shenlong stepped into the hallway and walked to the door of her office. He straightened his uniform before calmly knocking on the door.
“Enter.”
He opened the door and stepped into her office. He saluted her before sitting in the chair provided for agents and other visitors to the Lady’s office.
“Agent Shenlong, Agent Water sent me a message about the unexpected change in mission plans. Her message also said to expect you for debriefing instead of her.”
“Yes Ma’am. The operation went as expected. There were only ten rebels; all were captured with minimal injury to either side. All parts were cataloged and have been brought back to HQ without any problem.”
“And the John Doe? Agent Water said you found him. She also said he might possibly be the first surviving victim of the Geneticist. Cat ears and a tail correct? With no evidence of the continued existence of his human ears.”
“Yes Ma’am. Agent Water also requested that I inform you that she will be reporting to you as soon as she as stabilized him.”
“Very well. You are dismissed Agent.”
“Ma’am.”
He stood and crossed the room to the door.
“And Wufei, good job today. That’s exactly what we have been needing here at the Preventers Agency. I just hope you are as satisfied with your position as I am.”
“I believe I’m better suited to help keep peace than I am to any other position I could hold. The Preventers Agency is our best chance at doing so. I am also more satisfied with my position here than I could have been in any civilian job.”
“That’s good to hear Wufei. I know that the time period between the end of the war and the incident with the Barton Foundation was particularly hard on you. Hopefully your place here keeps you from finding yourself in the same situation now that peace has truly been established.”
“I believe that I’m in a much better situation now than I was before being accepted within the Preventers Agency.”
Lady Une smiled and nodded. “I believe Agent Water wanted you to meet up with her at the hospital once you were finished here?”
Wufei nodded and left the office quickly. The trip to the hospital was a short one. In fact, both the HQ building and the hospital were on the same block of the colony’s business sector. That was one of the requirements that Lady Une had set when she was first looking for buildings to use for HQ locations. Not all Preventer missions ended well and it was best to be prepared for anything.
Agent Water, who was also known as Doctor Sally Po, frowned as she studied the MRI scan of the mystery cat-boy’s head. Despite the force that would have been needed to cause the surface damage of the wound, the only internal damage done to the boy’s head was a moderate concussion. He was lucky, not only just because his head injury could have been much worse than it actually was, but because it was the only serious injury the boy had. He was truly lucky to be alive. They had shaved his head, cleaned the wound, and stitched it up as soon as he was brought into the ER. Then they put him on an I.V. drip and started running every single test they could think of to make sure he was as stable as he seemed.“Dr. Po, the blood test’s complete. His DNA is intact and completely stable. His iron, protein, and calcium levels are all slightly low but that may just be due to the malnutrition he’s suffered. Frankly I’m shocked that he’s as healthy as he is, let alone the fact he’s even alive.”
“Thank you Dr. Stevens. I hope he can tell us what happened to him when he wakes up. I’m sure that he has family somewhere that’s worried sick about him. I also want to know exactly how he managed survive the same treatment that’s managed to not only kill but liquefy 175 other victims.”
“I have no idea Dr. Po. Maybe the Geneticist has changed the formula he’s been using on his victims, or maybe this young man just happens to be lucky.”
Dr. Po shrugged as Agent Shenlong slipped into the exam room the young man was staying in. She turned and smiled at him as he moved closer to the bed the cat-boy was lying in. The cat-boy was still unconscious, but he was already starting to look better even though he had only been found a few hours before hand. Dr. Stevens frowned as his cell phone rang and he left the room.
“How’s he doing Sally? Is he actually going to survive?”
“I think so Wufei. His DNA is stable and he’s already starting to show signs of improvement. He does have a moderate concussion but he should be fine.”
“Do you have any idea when he’s going wake up Sally?”
“I don’t know when he’s going going to wake up, but it shouldn’t be very long from now. His condition is nowhere near as bad as it could have been despite his head injury and the malnutrition. He’s stable at the moment so I’m going to use this time to go speak to Lady Une about the mission, and about him.”
“I’ll stay with him until you get back Sally.”
“Contact me if he wakes up while I’m away.”
“Of course.”
Sally smiled and left the hospital room. Now alone with the young man, Wufei began to study him a little more closely. Despite the obviously prolonged malnutrition, the boy looked to be in his mid-teens. His head had been almost completely shaved in order to make sure that Sally could get to the laceration, but his hair would grow back in time. His skin was slightly tan, indicating that he had been used used to spending time outside in real sunlight. If that was the case, it meant that he wasn’t originally from the colonies. The cat ears and tail weren’t the only unusual things about the boy either. On his forehead, just above his right eye, was an unusual scar shaped like a lightning bolt. Sally wasn’t gone for very long and the boy didn’t respond at all during that time. Once she got back, she checked him over again before motioning for Wufei to leave the room with her. There wasn’t anything else they could do for him at that moment.
January 17th, AC 197: It wasn’t until early evening three days later that the mysterious young boy they found finally woke up. Wufei was sitting with him, reading a book, when the boy first woke up. There was no way the boy could know exactly where he was, but the boy didn’t panic. He simply looked curiously around the room with wide green eyes. Wufei was shocked by the color; he had only ever met one other person with eyes like the boy’s. Unfortunately, if they were hoping that the boy would be able to tell them anything upon waking up, they were sadly mistaken.“Good evening young man. My name is Dr. Sally Po. The young man sitting next to you is Agent Shenlong of the Preventers Agency. You’re currently at the L4 M-35621 Regional Heath Center located on space colony L4 M-35621. You have a head injury that required medical attention. Agent Shenlong found you while on a mission. We were also hoping that you might be able to help us with an investigation. But first I would like to check your head injury if you don’t mind.”
The boy blinked his large green eyes, complete with the vertical slit pupil cats were known for having, and nodded slowly. He seemed to be extremely confused about the entire situation, despite Sally’s rather straightforward explanation. She smiled at him as she helped him sit up so that she could get a closer look at the back of his head. He winced as she unwrapped the bandage after putting on a pair of gloves. After a couple of seconds of examining the wound, she rewrapped it with a fresh bandage and removed her gloves before helping him lie back again. His eyes continued to roam around the room as he puzzled things out.
“Just let me take a look in your eyes real quickly.” He nodded and allowed her to determine that his eyes were dilating correctly. “Can you tell us your full name? If we have that information we should be able to figure out where you actually belong.”
“I-I don’t know… I can’t remember my name.”
Wufei and Sally exchanged worried looks in response to his words. The boy gave the two of them a confused look as he tried and failed to remember anything at all about who he was.
“Do you think his head injury might have something to do with it?”
“It’s likely that his head injury is the main reason, but the treatment he was likely forced to undergo in order to give him his ears and tail might have also have something to do with his memory loss. We won’t know for sure for sure just yet though. Amnesia is a medical condition that we still don’t know very much about Agent Shenlong.”
“Um… Excuse me, but what’s going to happen to me now? I-I don’t know anyone but the two of you.”
“Don’t worry young man; we’ve already got everything planned out. We suspect that you may have been a victim of a man we only know as the Geneticist. We don’t know how you managed to survive when all of his other victims have been killed by him, but we do think it would be best if you remain in Preventer custody until we know exactly what has happened. It has been decided that you will be staying with Agent Shenlong and his boyfriend.”
“I hope that it won’t bother you to stay with us. I know that some people are still uncomfortable with Homosexuality.”
The boy shrugged and Sally smiled.
“If that’s the case I’ll leave the two of you to get better acquainted. I’m sure that there is a lot that the two of you need to talk about despite our young friend’s memory issues.”
Wufei and the mysterious young man both nodded. She smiled again before leaving the room. The two of them turned back to each other as the door closed behind the blond doctor. The boy began to mess with his ears a little before shifting so that he could touch his tail. He didn’t seem too freaked out by the fact that he had cat ears and a tail.
“So, you’re in a relationship with another guy? Is he another Preventers Agent? Is that why I haven’t met him yet? I mean, I am supposed to be staying with the both of you. I should probably be introduced to him before you bring me into your home. And what are the Preventers anyway? The name sound familiar… But I can’t remember why.”
“My boyfriend isn’t a Preventers Agent. He’s a mechanic and his name is Duo Maxwell. The reason he isn’t here is simple, we don’t actually live on this colony. We live on a colony from a different cluster. We weren’t expecting to have a house guest, so he didn’t travel from our home colony with me. I contacted him yesterday about the situation and he will be arriving the day after tomorrow. He’ll be acting as additional security as we transport you off the colony. As for what the Preventers are, we are an agency dedicated to protecting the peace established at the very end of the year AC 195. Duo once described us as a sort of International Police force. You don’t seem to be too bothered by the ears and tail by the way.”
The boy shrugged in response to his ears and tail, showing that they truly didn’t bother him all that much. “Okay, now I know what the Preventers are. So, what’s your boyfriend like? Is he nice?”
“He has his moments where he can be a little overwhelming, but overall he is a nice guy. He might seem like he has too much energy to be normal, but as long as that energy is channeled into productive uses he doesn’t get too chaotic. He’s protective of the people he cares about, though it’s sometimes hard to tell how much he actually cares because he likes to joke. It’s his way of coping with the things he’s experienced in his life. He’s an orphan who grew up on one of the L2 colonies. He’s about seventeen, but since we don’t actually know is real name or any connected information we don’t know his exact age.”
“Oh. I don’t know how old I am either. So, what will you guys call me? You can’t just keep calling me Boy or Young Man. Being called Young Man doesn’t really bother me, but I hate being called Boy. I don’t know why, but it really bothers me.”
“I suppose that we can figure out a good name for you until we find out who you really are once Duo gets here. He’s actually better at coming up with names than I am.”
“Okay. I suppose that I can handle that. Do you know exactly when he’ll be here? You said he would be here the day after tomorrow, but will he be here in the morning or in the evening? And when can I finally leave here? Do I have to stay here until it’s time for us to leave the colony?”
“His shuttle should arrive at 08:00*, and we’ll be leaving the day after that at about the same time. Sally said something about wanting to keep you at least one more day after you woke up, just to make sure that you’re doing as well as you seem to be. Once she decides you’re ready to leave you’ll be joining us in our hotel room.”
The cat boy nodded and began to fiddle with the TV controls as he thought about who he might be. He hadn’t actually gotten to see himself in a mirror, so he don’t know what he looked like. But he didn’t really care about that right then.
January 19th, AC 197: “So, this kid we’re taking in; he has no memory of who he really is, he has green eyes like Trowa, and cat ears and a tail? Okay. I still don’t see why this kid’s so important that Lady Une’s calling in favors from me to take care of him.”“Duo, sometimes you make me wonder how you managed to survive the life you lived. This kid is likely the only known survivor of the Geneticist. How else do you think he ended up with cat ears and a tail?”
“True… But still, how do we know that his family isn’t desperately looking for him? We could bring his entire family into protective custody. I mean, you did say he has pretty distinctive looks. Maybe his appearance could be enough to find out who he really is.”
“Duo do you realize how long it would take to find out who this boy is by searching missing persons reports for someone who matches his appearance? Lady Une and I have already discussed ways for us to find out who he is. She decided that going that route would waste Preventer resources and I agreed with her. His memories might very well return once his head injury heals. Lady Une wants to wait and see what happens before she starts pulling agents off of other missions to go through who knows exactly how many ‘missing persons’ reports in hopes of finding him.”
“Okay, okay. You win Wufei.”
“And Duo, remember that the boy has been pretty overwhelmed with the situation he’s found himself in. So please try to keep your insanity to a minimum. We don’t want him to think that he’ll be in danger the entire time he’s staying with us.”
“Okay, okay, okay. I’ll do my best to behave.”
They entered the hospital elevator and Wufei pushed the button for the fifth floor. Wufei was dressed in his Preventers uniform and Duo was dressed in all black. The Preventers uniforms were fairly basic, with black combat boots, black pants, a standard issue black and tan Preventers jacket, and an undershirt. Wufei chose to go with a tan shirt, but some Preventers chose to wear a button down and a tie with their uniform. Duo had stopped wearing his priest outfit after they had brought an end to the fight with OZ, Romefeller Foundation, and White Fang. His current outfit was a black tee-shirt with the words ‘Parental Advisory Explicit Content’ written on the front, black jeans, and a pair of black combat boots. He was also carrying a bag with clothes and shoes. Neither Duo nor Wufei had changed their hair styles within the few short weeks since the end of the Mariemaia Incident.
When they finally got to the boy’s room, they found him flipping through TV channels with a mildly bored look on his face. When he noticed that he had visitors, he turned the TV off and focused on them. He looked relieved to see them. Duo flopped into one of the two chairs in the room and got comfortable, while Wufei sat in the chair closer to the boy’s bed. The boy looked from Duo to Wufei curiously as he waited for the two of them to start talking.
“Young man, this is Duo. He’s my boyfriend, and the other person you will be staying with for the foreseeable future. Duo, this is the young man I was talking about.”
“So this is the kid with no memories. Well, we can’t just keep calling you kid or ‘young man’. We should figure out something to call you.” Duo tapped his chin as he thought for a few moments. “It has to be something that’s going to sound alright, something that suits you. Well, you’ve got black fur on your ears. We could base your new name off of that.”
“I like that idea, but what name would actually work? It can’t be the sort of name you would give a pet, because I’m not an animal. I mean, I’m barely used to having cat ears and a tail. Not that I can remember what it was like to have anything but cat ears and a tail. But I’ve been told that it isn’t normal to have them, so I’m guessing that I haven’t always had them.”
“I suppose we could get a name book for you to look through if you’d like. I believe they sell them in most stores.”
Duo suddenly snapped his fingers, leading the other two inhabitants of the room to give him an odd look. He didn’t speak immediately, so Wufei glared at him.
“What about Karasu**? It's Japanese, and it means ‘crow’ or ‘raven’. I think it fits because of the color of your fur and hair. So what do you think about it?”
“Wow, I’m surprised that you’ve actually come up with a good idea.”
“Bite me Wuffers.”
“Er… I don’t think I’d like to see that right now, thank you. But I like the name Karasu. Did I pronounce that correctly?”
“You pronounced it right. So I guess Karasu it is.”
“Now that we know what we will be calling you from now on, are you ready to leave yet Karasu? The clothing you arrived in was so dirty and torn that it couldn’t really be saved, so I’ve had Duo bring some of his clothing with him for you to change into.”
“Okay. That’s fine by me. I’m tired of being here though. Sally’s nice, but I’m tired of the nurses constantly rubbing my ears every time they come into the room to check my blood pressure and temperature. Besides, I want to get some real sleep. Did you know that they’ve woken me up every hour and a half for the last few days? It’s a little hard to sleep when you’ve got someone wanting to poke and prod you every hour and a half.”
“Yeah, they’re good at interrupting your rest. Don’t worry though, you’ll be able to sleep tonight, then we’ll be taking a shuttle back to our home colony tomorrow morning. I think you’ll like our house. Of course, we’ll be getting you some new clothes. You can’t just keep wearing my stuff, even though my clothes are absolutely awesome.”
Wufei rolled his eyes and grabbed the long braid that hung from the back of Duo’s head, pulling on it to get his boyfriend to leave the room with him so that Karasu could get dressed. The nurses had already unhooked Karasu from the heart monitor and the I.V. drip that they had been giving him additional nutrients through, so he didn’t have to worry about calling the nurse in to help him with anything. He was thrilled to get out of the poorly fitting and embarrassingly revealing hospital gown and into regular clothing. Before he took the gown off he took a quick look at the black tee-shirt he was about to put on. It made him laugh, how else could anyone respond to a tee-shirt that said ‘Just because I’m Cute doesn’t mean I give a Fuck’. He was still laughing as he took the gown off and slipped the black boxer shorts and black jeans on. Then he put the tee-shirt on over his head, mindful of his ears and head wound. Finally he put the black socks and black and white Converse on before going to find his new roommates. Luckily, they hadn’t gone far. He found them standing over by the nurse’s station, talking to Sally.
“It’s good to see you up and about. I hear you even have a new name courtesy of Duo. Normally I wouldn’t go for his ideas, but I think that the name Karasu actually suits you. I’m guessing you’re tired of being here in the hospital, too. You didn’t seem particularly thrilled to be woken up this morning.”
“I just haven’t gotten much sleep. It’s sort of annoying to get woken up all the time; it makes it hard to recover.”
“I know, but we have to make sure that our patients are doing well. Medical complications don’t stop happening just because the person experiencing them is trying to sleep. So, have you filled your discharge papers yet?”
“Yes Ma’am, the nurse brought the paperwork into my room when she came to disconnect me from the machines I was attached to. She also gave me information about how to take care of the wound.” He held up a small packet of paper and smiled slightly.
“Then I think you’re good to go. Don’t worry; the wound on your head will heal quickly. Just make sure you follow the directions the nurse gave you.”
“Alright, we’ll be at the hotel if you need us before we leave for home. Duo, stop pestering that nurse. I think we should probably leave before he decides to blow something up.”
“Good idea, some of our patients here have been through enough without also exposing them to his insanity. I’ll see you once you’ve gotten your guest comfortable.”
Wufei nodded and led his two companions towards the elevator. Duo and Karasu chatted back and forth, just getting to know each other, as the elevator descended. Wufei kept mostly silent as the two of them continued their conversation until they were at the hotel. Karasu went silent as soon as they entered the hotel, at which point he seemed to be in a state of awe at how impressive the hotel looked. The hotel wasn’t actually all that fancy, but for a kid who could only remember ever being in a hospital it was like stepping into a completely new world. There was an entry way that was tastefully decorated with a couple of cheerful plants that one had to walk through in order to get to the actual lobby of the hotel. The lobby was decorated in warm yet mellow colors, mostly pleasant yellows and cream colors with a little light green thrown in.
Karasu continued to silently take in everything he was seeing as the three of them entered the elevator and rode to the fifth floor of the building. The fifth floor corridor was wallpapered in white and cream striped paper, showing that the coloring from the lobby was actually an overall ‘theme’ for the hotel. He was also the last of the three of them to enter their room, at which point he began to look around curiously. The room wasn’t anything too special. It was a standard double room with a bathroom, TV, coffee maker, two beds, a closet, and a couch off to the side. Like the rest of the hotel they had seen, it was done in comforting shades of yellow, cream, white, and light green. While Karasu continued to gaze around the room in interest, Duo flopped onto the nearest bed and groaned softly.
“Man, it doesn’t matter how often I travel; it still wipes me out.”
“Do you travel often Duo?”
“Eh, I guess you could say that. Though if I have it my way I’ll be traveling a lot less than I used to. Wufei’ll be doing most of the traveling if I have things my way. I want to run a scrap yard and mechanics shop.”
“So how much traveling have the two of you done?”
“I didn’t really get to move until after I got off the colony I grew up on. I actually lived on the streets for most of my childhood, before being taken in by a Catholic orphanage when I was about ten. Something… happened… that made me leave the orphanage. From there I snuck onto one of the shuttles belonging to the Sweepers, a group that collects scrap metal and parts floating in space. I didn’t meet Wufei until about a year ago.”
“Oh. What about you Wufei?”
“I lived on my home colony until it was destroyed when I was almost fifteen. After my home colony was destroyed, I was sent to Earth. I met Duo while on Earth. I’ve also traveled to multiple colonies in the L5 cluster, L4 cluster, and the L3 cluster. Duo and I live on a colony in the L1 cluster.”
“Wow, I don’t know if I’ve ever really done much traveling. I wonder where I’m actually from.”
“I’m sure that we’ll be able to find out where you came from soon. Until then, you’ll be fine staying with us.”
“Hey Wufei… I’m kinda hungry, what do you say about ordering food in? I’m sure Karasu’s ready to anything that isn’t hospital food.”
Wufei nodded and they ordered Chinese food in response to Duo’s begging it. From there the three of them spent the rest of the day getting to know one another in the hotel room, until Karasu finally fell asleep curled in to a ball on one of the beds early in the evening.
January 20th, AC 197: Karasu gazed around the shuttle port in awe. He had never seen anything like it, at least that he remembered. The shuttle port was huge and packed with people. Duo and Wufei were walking with the young cat-boy in between them, fully alert and aware of exactly what was going on around them. They were meant to be protecting him, and with Karasu likely being the only one to ever survive the Geneticist’s ‘treatments’, it was likely that he would need all of their protection. The Geneticist would likely want his one surviving experiment back. Part of protecting Karasu was also making sure that no one recognized him. They made sure of that by giving him an overly large hoodie. The hoodie hid his cat ears while also ensuring that no one would notice that Karasu no longer had normal human ears. They also had his tail tucked down the back of his right pant leg. Thankfully their training allowed them to focus on what was going on around them without having to tell the curious young man to stop talking, because he had so many questions that he kept a constant stream of chatter going the entire time they were waiting to board their shuttle.“So, how long does it take for a shuttle to get from one colony to another?”
“That depends on which colony you are traveling from and which colony you a traveling to. It takes a lot less time to travel between colonies in the same cluster than it does to travel between colonies located in different clusters. The exact distance you will travel is also dependent on the location of the colony clusters you are traveling to. Some clusters are located closer to each other than others. Does that answer your question?”***
“Yeah, I guess so. So about how long will it take us to get to where we’re supposed to be going?”
“We’ll be traveling to the L1 cluster, so it should take about twelve hours for us to get there. By the way, Wufei’s basically a fountain for knowledge, so go to him if you ever want to know anything. Unless you want to know about cars. If you want to know about cars, you come to me. Not saying he doesn’t know anything about them, but being a mechanic is my job.”
“Okay. So, what am I going to be doing once we get to the colony you live on? I mean, will I be attending school?”
“At the moment I don’t feel that having you attend school would be the wisest choice, however if you would like to learn I would be happy to tutor you during my down time. I actually have quite an extensive library in our house, and you’re welcome to read any of the books I have. All I ask is that you treat them well while you have them in your possession and that you put them back where they belong after you’re done with them. I like to be able to locate any book I need quickly, so I like to keep them in a certain order at all times. I’m sure that Duo would be happy to teach you anything that you would like to know about cars as well.”
“I sort of have a feeling that I should be learning as much as I can learn. I don’t know why, but I do.”
“Gaining knowledge is never a bad thing Karasu. My career may be in protecting others, but I will always want to learn more.”
At that moment it was announced that they could board their shuttle. Once they were on the shuttle Karasu began asking a whole bunch of questions about how the shuttles worked. He continued his constant string of questions until the shuttle began take off preparations, at which time he went completely silent. Once they had cleared the terminal the cat-boy gasped in awe. His ears and tail began to twitch under his clothing, making Wufei and Duo eternally grateful that the shuttle they would be taking was a privately owned shuttle that was typically only used by Lady Une, who was actually traveling with them, which meant that only the most trusted members of the Preventers Agency were allowed anywhere near it.
It didn’t matter if a person had been born in the colonies or on Earth, that first trip through space was still captivating. Consequently, Karasu spent the first hour or so of the trip just gazing out at the infinite beauty of space. He was fascinated by the sight of the planet Earth and of the moon. However, aside from a mad dash from one side of the shuttle to the other in order to get a closer look at the moon, which was not on the same side of the shuttle as the planet Earth was, he managed to remain fairly calm in his awe. Eventually his stomach rumbled loudly, indicating that it was time for him to eat, and he had to sit back down in his seat. The rest of the flight was uneventful and they were able to travel from the Shuttle port on their home colony to their home without much trouble. After they arrived a quick tour of the house was given.
The living room wasn’t too small or too large and was painted a soft mint green color with white carpeting. There was a darker green couch along with two matching recliners, a large TV, a DVD player, and a couple of video game consoles. On either side of the entertainment stand, which contained only the TV, DVD player, and video game consoles, stood two small book cases made out of what appeared to be the same type of light colored wood as the entertainment stand. One of the book cases contained a collection of movies and video games, while the other one contained a collection of books. Duo led him through the living room into a small back hallway while Wufei headed upstairs.
“This door here to the left leads to the downstairs bathroom. The door on the right leads to the kitchen. Upstairs are the bedrooms and main bathroom, as well as Wufei’s library. I’ll show you those in a moment.” He opened the bathroom door to show Karasu what it looked like. The room had a white tiled floor and blue tiled walls. There was a shower stall, toilet, a stand for towels and wash cloths, and a sink that sat above a cabinet.
“Toilet paper and cleaning supplies are located under the sink. I’m not sure how the chores will be divvied up now that you’re staying with us, but Wufei believes that every member of the house should do their fair share of the household chores. Now let’s go in the kitchen for a moment.”
Karasu nodded and followed Duo as he went into the kitchen. The kitchen was a bit smaller than the living room, but it was still plenty big enough to comfortably fit a table and chairs without making maneuvering the kitchen a challenge. The room was painted a sunny yellow color with white and cream marble tiles.
“The kitchen’s pretty easy to figure out. The cabinet closest to the door leading back to the hallway contains cups and glasses. Next to it is the plates and bowls. Then you have the cereal and breakfast foods that don’t need to be kept cold. Then there is the snack food cabinet. The last cabinet next to the fridge contains the glass cookware. The lower cabinets contain the metal cookware and cleaning supplies. The drawers, from closest to the hallway door are silverware, random kitchen stuff like measuring cups and spoons, random stuff not used for cooking, followed by the the freezer and trash bags. We’ll just be ordering a pizza tonight because I’m pretty sure Wufei doesn’t feel like cooking and I know I’m not in the mood to. Also, for the most part we like to keep actual food in the kitchen. Snacks and some meals can be eaten in the living room as long as they aren’t messy, and drinks are allowed as long as you’re careful not to spill them. No food is allowed in the bedrooms or the library, but you can keep a glass of water in your room. Now, let’s head upstairs.”
They exited the kitchen and headed up the stairs, a set of the sort of stairs that have a landing half way up them before doubling back on themselves, where Karasu found himself at the end of a hallway that contained four doors. The hallway had light cream walls and white carpeting. The four doors were all made of a light colored wood.
“The first door on our left leads to the room Wufei and I share, while the first door on our right leads to the library. Your room is the second door on our right, with the main bathroom being the last room. Try not to go into our room unless you have to, okay kid? If you need us during the night or when we’re in there at any other time, make sure you knock and wait for one of us to answer. I really don’t want you walking in on Wufei and me during… Yeah… I’m sure you can figure out what I’m trying to say.”
Karasu nodded and laughed a little as Duo opened the door to the library and led him inside. There were so many bookshelves lining the walls that it was hard to see the walls themselves, but what little of them could be seen matched the dark red carpeting. There were a couple of comfortable looking chairs and a table in the center of the room. All of the wood in the room was dark in order to match the overall feeling of the room, and the two chairs were covered in dark brown leather.
“Wufei has already said that you can read any of the books in here, just make sure you remember to take good care of them and put them back in the right place.”
Karasu nodded and Duo motioned for him to follow him out of the room. Then Duo led the cat-boy to the room that he would be staying in for the foreseeable future. The room was small but comfortable. It had a twin bed with a frame made of dark wood that was made with lighter brown bedclothes, a desk and desk chair, and an easy chair. The desk and desk chair were made of the same dark wood as the bed frame, while the easy chair was a slightly darker shade of brown than the bedclothes. The walls were painted a light tan color while the floor was carpeted with dark brown carpeting. All in all it was a nice, if slightly impersonal, room.
“I hope that this’ll be okay. We didn’t really have time to do anything with it and it is kinda bland.”
“I like it. It’s a nice room. So why isn’t food allowed up here?”
“That’s kinda my fault. I fell asleep with a candy bar in my hand one night. Our sheets were so badly stained with chocolate and caramel the next morning that there wasn’t any saving them. I also dumped Mountain Dew in the bed one time. After that Wufei made a blanket rule of no food or drinks aside from water in the bedrooms.”
“I can see why he wouldn’t want any more food or soda anywhere near the bedrooms after that.”
After the grand tour of the house the three of them ordered pizza and watched a movie before going to bed.
~~~Chapter Ends~~~A/N: I’m sorry that this chapter was late. I made a post on my LiveJournal account a few days before this chapter was SUPPOSED to be up that explains why I didn’t get this chapter up as soon as I was hoping to. I was also put on a course of antibiotics that had headaches as a possible side effect, unfortunately I can’t really write when I have a headache so I had about two days where writing was not a possibility at all for me. This chapter actually turned out to be quite a bit longer than the original version. The original was a little over half as long as this one is. I actually felt that the original version of this chapter was too short despite not really missing any information.If you would like updates on my stories you can either like my page on Facebook, or indicate that you would like email updates in your next review. Just make sure that you include your email address. I will not give out your email address to anyone else, nor will I send you anything but emails letting you know that the next chapter of whichever story you wanted updates on has been posted.

**According to my Japanese to English dictionary, written by Seigo Nakao and published by Random House, Karasu does in fact mean both Raven and Crow.
***I’ve done a little bit of research as to the actual locations of the Colony Clusters; it’s actually not too complicated but I’ll go ahead and post a LiveJournal entry to explain basically where the colonies are located at some time in the next couple of days. I will also try to upload a photo to go with the entry if I can. Reading the LiveJournal entry isn’t mandatory, as I’m going to try to keep my information in the as basic as I can so that I can at least try not to confuse people.
