Chapter 2
Landing on his backside with a soft 'oof' after the elf Apparated him in, Harry stood then brushed off the seat of his pants with a wince. Well, at least he made it! That's all that really counted, he supposed. Looking around the decrepit place, he was pleased to see Sirius leaning against a doorjamb, arms folded over his chest, grinning at him. Perfect! That meant this mess had all gone according to plan.
Pushing himself off the jamb, Sirius walked over and pulled his godson into a one-armed hug. Kissing him on the temple, he asked, “Everything went just how it should?”“Just how Severus planned,” Harry grinned, leaning against him. “Panic started when you vanished, something Remus helped fuel. Then I got out fine. Hermione was talking to me when I just went poof. That should have set off the rest. Let's see.” Glancing around, he wrinkled his nose at the state of the place then asked, “Do I want to know where we are? Severus said he picked somewhere no one would look. This is disgusting, though.”Chuckling, Sirius told him, “It's nasty, no doubt. It's perfect for what we need, though. In more ways than one.” Guiding Harry into the next room, one that Snape had set up to at least be comfortable and was cleaned up slightly, he then explained. “Believe it or not, we're in one of the flats right next to Grimmauld Place, on the top floor. It's one that's not been used for what seems like forever because of problems, apparently. Even better is it's facing the street, so we can keep track of what's going on. This way, we can keep watch then do what we need to when it comes time to getting completely out. Remus knows where we are and will send a signal tonight when it's time. Like you heard, he's going to go into Grimmauld Place once we're ready to leave, making sure that everyone is running in circles elsewhere, get my stuff, lock the wards down and transfer the Fidelius to himself. Then we're snagging Buckbeak and getting the hell out.”Flopping down on a settee that at least looked clean and comfortable, Harry leaned back then crossed his ankles. Nodding, he asked, “Do you think we can manage this? I mean, we didn't have much time to get the plan together.”“We should be able to,” Sirius assured him, taking a seat beside him with a groan. “We kept the plan as simple as we could when it came to this mess. That always helps as it's less likely to fail because you counted on too much. The biggest part we've already taken care of; us. The other part that is the touchiest is something we can count on as well; Remus and Severus' acting ability. As they've managed up until now with so much, I'm saying it's a sure bet they can pull this off as well. It just means the two of us staying here until it's time to get out. Then, once we do that and get wherever it is Severus has set up, we send the biggest bit out to throw everyone into a panic; getting those Blood Wards to fall. That we can easily manage. Between that and Grimmauld Place locking down solid, it should have everyone just running in circles, imagining the worst.”Grinning a bit at the thought of how much panic that would cause, Harry chuckled softly. “That would actually be a riot to see the reaction to!” Sobering up, he asked, “How is Severus going to manage to get out? Do you know?”“That I'm not sure of,” Sirius told him softly, slipping an arm around his shoulders. “As you heard, he said he has something. Since he knows what he's doing, I'm just going to lay my trust in that. We’ll see.”“He said something about being summoned by that evil git?” Harry asked, leaning against Sirius.“He did,” Sirius nodded. “Not sure what he meant by that, but my guess is he's going to act like he was summoned before Feast starts then just vanish. I don't know, though. It's a case of he knows what he's doing and I'll trust in that. Remus might know just what's going on as he was going to have to help, but it was probably best we didn't so nothing could slip.”“Either that or we'd worry about it, one of the two,” Harry told him with a bit of a grin.“Oh, yes,” Sirius laughed. Sobering up, he said, softly, “Us getting out is just the start of the problems, I want you to understand that. We have plenty of others to worry about. I don't think staying hidden is going to end up one of them, but there are others. The Trace on you is a big one. That we need to get rid of, fast, so the Ministry or Albus can't use it to find you. We've got the connection to that evil arse blocked when it comes to you, but we need to worry about Severus' Dark Mark and getting rid of it. Even he said he's not sure if it can be used to trace him. Then there are all the small problems, like teaching you, getting on each other's nerves, going barmy from being cooped up, stuff like that.”Taking that in, Harry gave a slow nod as he thought it over. Quietly, he said, “I think those are easier to handle than what's been going on, Sirius. That and whatever both sides of this mess are planning. I'd take this over that bit any day.”Thinking that over, Sirius gave a slow nod. “You're right. We'll take it as it comes.” Chuckling, he added, “We need to factor in how we're going to drive Severus nuts as well. You know what he's like. We can get on his nerves quickly and we're usually only together for small increments. This will be worse. It's just another bit we're going to have to work with.”Laughing, Harry nodded, “True! Though I think part of that is he just likes to huff to do it, nothing more. It's just his way of keeping up appearances.”“That could be,” Sirius grinned. “We'll find out one way or another.” Gazing out the window, Sirius sighed. This was going to be hard, the waiting. And it would probably make both of them mental. Sighing, he shook his head. “Let's move the settee over by the window. That way we can keep an eye on what's going on. Then we'll find something to do to keep us occupied until it's time.” Seeing Harry nod, he stood then drew his wand. After all, they might as well be comfortable while they waited.
Rubbing a hand over his face, groaning, Severus looked between Alastor and Albus. Internally, he was giving a pleased nod. The two new elves he got his hands on performed perfectly. They had already reported in, of course, that it all went as anticipated. This just shored that up. As expected, everyone was in a panic. More that helped and was what they planned for. Shaking his head, he made sure to stay in character then asked, sneer in his voice, “Are we sure this isn't just a stunt of some kind?”
“No,” Alastor gruffed, looking dourer than normal. “We heard a yip from Padfoot then he was gone. I can only assume that the yip came from whatever happened. Granger was talking to Potter then he just vanished as well. We checked everything we could and tried to trace them, but they were gone.”Not liking this, Albus smoothed down his beard and looked between the two. “Did the others get on the train?”“We managed that fine,” Alastor assured him. “After that bit, we Apparated them there to make damned sure nothing else happened. I set Tonks and Kingsley to looking around to see what they could find after we did that. Once we were sure everyone was on the platform, Remus and I went back to help. We're finding nothing. Then I called in everyone I could think of to help. There's nothing, Albus. If they had vanished together, I would lean in Severus' direction. They didn't. Padfoot vanished first. Potter was still there for several minutes afterwards. In fact, he was right in front of Remus. Remus said that he looked away for a couple of seconds and Potter was gone. None of us heard anything.”“I don't think the two would pull a prank like this, Severus,” Albus sighed. “For now, unless there is evidence to the contrary, we take this as real and keep looking for them.” Shaking his head, not sure what to do, he added, “I'll contact everyone I can to help. Let's see what we can manage. I'll also start gathering tracking spells we can use. That's going to take time. If Harry hasn't shown up by the time Feast starts, I'll contact the Ministry to see what they can do.”“You might want to do that now, Albus,” Alastor told him. “We'll leave Sirius' name out of the equation, but we need help. All of us can be honest about what happened.”“I'll get in touch with the DMLE,” Albus said with a soft sigh and nod. “Let's see what we can do.” Eyes swiveling to Severus, he asked, “Are you prepared to start tonight?”“Everything is ready,” Severus confirmed, pleased with this. It was going how he planned for. He assumed Albus would drag him into this, which would give him time to do what he needed. The elves had all the things he wanted taken with him duplicated and at the house. There were other matters he needed to tend to, though. If this went how he anticipated, he would have time for that.“Can you think of anything that might help and can you step in?” The Headmaster asked, hopeful Severus could think of something he couldn't that would assist.Looking down, arms folded over his chest, Severus appeared to think that over then said, tone distracted, “Let me go to Grimmauld Place and walk through the steps taken until they vanished. I'll also check around for anything odd. If I find anything, I'll get in contact.”“Please do,” Albus said, satisfied. “If you need any help, contact me. Plenty will be close by, so they can easily get there.”“You said Lupin was right behind Potter?” Severus asked, looking at Alastor.“He was,” the retired Auror confirmed, looking at the Potions Master.“Have him meet me there. He was close enough that he can walk me through whatever I need,” Severus told him. Straightening up, he said, “I'll be there in a couple of minutes.” Seeing nods, he swept out. Just perfect and according to what he had planned for.
Casting a temporary ward on the kitchen, Severus looked at Lupin then said, “So far we're right on track. You're certain no one suspects anything?”
“We're good, Severus,” Remus assured him. “I made sure I was closest to Harry. Sirius also made sure to make enough noise that everyone heard it. That set off what we wanted. I didn't need to pull out anything that was a lie to get this moving. Your plan worked perfectly.”“Good,” Severus told him, looking pleased. “We'll go with what we worked out from here on out. Once the wards lock down, we'll get Black's things moved and use Buckbeak to get out. I don't want to chance Apparating all of us as it would involve multiple stops to make sure we throw everyone off. Each time we would appear, it would chance us being seen. That I don't want. We can Disillusion Buckbeak to make this work.”“Buckbeak can't carry all three of you, Severus,” Remus pointed out softly. “He's strong, yes, but I wouldn't want to chance that.”Lupin was right, of course. Though the hippogriff could probably manage, it was best not to chance it. Pinching the bridge of his nose, eyes shut, Severus tried to think. After a few moments, he asked, “Harry had his broom, yes?”“Of course,” Remus confirmed.“I'll use that to fly alongside them. Black can ensure Harry stays safe on the hippogriff. In fact, the two can use the Invisibility Cloak to help. It's big enough both of them can fit under it.” He actually liked this idea better as he would be free to fly in a different pattern to keep an eye out for problems.“Good plan,” Remus told him, happy with that idea. “How about we do a walk around the house, something you would probably do to check for clues. As Sirius doesn't have much to pack, I'll duplicate everything then shrink and tuck everything in my pocket. That will be less we have to do later on. As the house will stay locked down for the foreseeable future, whatever else he might want to keep will stay safe.”“Do that,” Severus told him in a determined tone, pleased that Lupin could think ahead enough to know what would help. “I need you to slip back in at some point and box up all the food you can, both the canned and fresh. It may take us a few days to set up delivery services and get the kitchen up to specs so it's safe. The more we have prepared, the better off we’ll be.”“Rather than that, as it might be missed in case someone comes in, I'll pop into the small Muggle shopette not far from here and grab what I can. They have plenty of easy to prepare fresh and frozen foods, not to mention ready to eat, that I can buy for all of you. It won't be the same as freshly prepared, but I'm sure the elves can manage,” Remus suggested. Lowering his voice, he added, “As I'll be out supposedly hunting for clues, it won't look odd for me to pop in places.”“Yes, that is an easier way to go about this,” Severus conceded, once more happy that Lupin came up with something that would work better. This was a relief, as getting himself out in a way that was believable was going to end up the worst part of this.Gently, Remus asked, “Do you have a believable excuse for vanishing yourself, Severus?”“Nothing to worry about,” Severus told him with a wave of his hand. “I have something. It's best you not know beforehand what it is. Be prepared. You'll know what it is when it happens. Just worry about being here around midnight so we can get out.”“I can handle it,” Remus assured him. “I've got the box set up at my cottage for messages. The elves can deliver what you need there.”“Just stay alert for them,” Severus told him, motioning the man to follow so they could do what was needed. “The first month or so, we may need more help because that house is nowhere near ready for habitation. We'll be in severely cramped quarters for a time.”Trailing along, Remus reiterated yet again something he had assured all of them the night before, “I'll help all I can.” As they made their way up the stairs, keeping his voice down, he asked, “What are you going to do about the Trace. That needs broken as fast as you can manage it.”“Once we get to the house, I'll take care of it, never fear. For now, we're good. It will take twenty-four hours before they can officially activate using it. Even Albus couldn’t manage it before then because of what it takes to hone in on the correct signature. And the wards we're using where they are stashed will negate any tracing spells. For now, we should be fine. Me vanishing should help keep everyone off-kilter as well.”“I hope so, Severus,” Remus sighed. This was tricky and he wanted it to go as smooth as possible.“Trust me,” Severus told him, voice gruff. His mind was all over with what he had to do, so he was uptight. They would pull it off, though. The key was the simplicity. That he just had to keep reminding himself.
About an hour before Feast was to start, when word came in that the Express was right on schedule when it came to arrival time, Severus was in Albus' office with plenty of others. As they had planned for, nothing had turned up a trace of Harry and Sirius. Perfect, absolutely perfect. As all the normal areas were exhausted, Albus was starting to work on ones that weren't as common. The DMLE would be at the castle getting statements from everyone after Feast ended then begin their own investigation. What they needed.
Standing there, sandwiched between Lupin and Bill Weasley, Severus made sure it looked like he was paying attention, though he was just waiting for the right time to pull out the last of what they needed. It would throw everyone off and, hopefully, get them focused on the theory already being looked at; the Dark Lord being involved. As Albus was starting to go over assignments for what he wanted them to do, Severus hissed then clutched his forearm. As he had done this more than once when it came to it being a ruse to tend to various areas and spend time with Sirius, he could make it look plenty convincing. Face drawn in pain and a grim look on it, he said, “I have to go.”Not liking what this could mean, Albus nodded. “Be careful, Severus. If you see or pick up on anything--,” he trailed off, knowing his spy would get what he meant.“I will,” Severus nodded. With that, he swept out, looking determined. That went well. Though it would be odd for him to be summoned tonight, as the Dark Lord generally wouldn't because of Feast, with all that happened that day, it wasn't going to end up being eyed too closely either. What they needed.Hurrying to the front gates, he quickly Apparated away to tend to the myriad of things that required attention before they truly left. He just had to make damned sure he couldn't end up detected, by either side of this nightmare.
“Have you got everything?” Severus asked Sirius and Harry, looking between the two. The three of them, plus Lupin, were standing in the front hall of Grimmauld Place for the final time. Buckbeak was down there with them on a leash held by Sirius. It was well after midnight and finally time to get out. “You best double check because once we leave there is no coming back.”
“We have it. Everything is shrunk and in the bags on Buckbeak,” Sirius assured him. “Remus grabbed my things here and Harry has his. There is even enough food in one of the bags to last us several weeks. It should be fine. Anything we forgot will stay safe.”Pleased with that, Severus nodded, shifting Harry's broom from one hand to the other. “The wards are locked down and the Fidelius changed?” He then asked Lupin.“All handled,” Remus assured him. “I took care of it while all of you were up getting Buckbeak. No one can get in.”“And Kreacher?” Severus asked, glancing around. The elf wasn't going with them, of course, but he wanted to make damned sure that Black had ordered the elf to keep his trap shut.“Taken care of it,” Sirius assured him. “He won't say a word. Quit worrying and let's get on with this. The more time we stay here, the more there’s a chance of getting caught.”Taking that as sound advice, though shooting Sirius a withering look, as would be expected, Severus clutched Harry's Firebolt securely then said, voice tight, “Let's move out then. Disillusion Buckbeak and get the cloak on. We'll walk to the park and take off from there. Lupin? Go out ahead of us and make sure it's all clear. Put up that temporary ward so we can get out of here.” The ward wouldn't hold long, but it was powerful enough that it would block any spells used to alert someone to their presence. “Signal when it's in place. I don't want to walk out until it is.”“Consider it done,” Remus told him with a smile then left to tend to that.Disillusioning the hippogriff, Sirius held tightly to the lead on him then draped the cloak over Harry and himself. Severus had already tended to Disillusioning himself. Now they waited for Remus' signal.Seeing the flash of green, Severus told the other two, voice tense, “It's time. Be cautious.”Uptight himself as this was the moment that they had the greatest chance of being discovered, Sirius put a hand on Harry's shoulder and began to move them towards the door, leading Buckbeak along. Heart hammering, he couldn't help but grin a little. It was time to get out. That's what they needed to focus on.Trailing behind the two and the hippogriff, Severus was running this plan over once more to make sure he had accounted for all they could. That was more for himself and to keep from going barmy over the risk of this than anything else. It would work. He knew that as everything else had. It was just the idea.Standing by Remus, waiting for Severus to double check everything, something normal for him, Sirius told everyone, “We need to get out of here, now. The longer we tarry about, the more chances there are of someone we don't want coming around.”Taking that as good advice, Severus nodded. “We should be fine. Everything is in place.” Looking at Lupin, he told him, “Keep the ward up for at least a half an hour. That way it won't look odd and we'll be long gone. If I planned it right, those Blood Wards are going to come down in about two hours. It's going to take us that long to get there as I’m going to guide us the roundabout way.”“I'll manage, Severus, don't worry,” Remus smiled. The smile slipping off his face, he said, “All of you be careful and let me know you managed to get there safely in the way we discussed. I'll pass along anything I hear to all of you.”“We will,” Sirius said. Making sure Harry's cloak was draped over his shoulder, he then mounted Buckbeak. Waiting for Severus to help Harry onto the hippogriff, he had his godson sit in front of him. Wrapping one arm around Harry's waist to help keep him safe, he draped the cloak around them, leaving their heads uncovered for the moment. “We're ready.”Stepping up close to the hippogriff, Severus told them, “Follow me. I'll get us there. The broom might be hard to see, but you'll manage. And put a temporary sticking charm on the cloak to keep it in place.” Seeing Sirius nod, Severus leaned close then kissed Harry softly. Breaking it off, he ruffled his hair. Leaning up, he kissed Sirius as well. When he broke it off, he added, tone containing a heavy sigh, “And no foolish stunts, Black. This is tricky enough as it is, we don't want to take any chances.”Chuckling at that and grinning, Sirius said, “No stunts, I swear. We'll save those for when you're locked in the house with us.” Pulling part of the cloak over their heads, he put the charm on it then said, “Lead the way, Snape.”Mounting the broom, Severus made sure his spell was in place and as good as he could get it then kicked off, keeping an eye out over his shoulder to ensure the two followed him. When he saw them sticking close to the tail end of the broom, he veered off in the opposite direction of where they were going, heading towards the ocean. He wanted to get out of London as fast as they could to negate any chance of being seen. From there, he had the right path to get to the house. He just hoped their luck held out.Watching the three depart Remus smiled. It went just as planned. Raising his wand, he set the time for the ward to drop then Apparated away home. Though there were plenty scrambling to figure out what went on, he was one that was told to get some rest. So, he needed to be there when the wards fell. After all, it wouldn't do to take a chance of anyone thinking something was off.
