Three Weeks Ago...
'Why is it that we've never met aliens?'
Someone, she didn't know who, snorted loudly. 'Seriously?'
Hermione lay on her back, staring at the clouds while they floated by. She actually didn't think it was such a strange idea. They encountered almost everything a muggle would commit to fairy tails. Or folk lore. She had met centaurs and trolls and ghosts and dragons. Why shouldn't aliens exist?
'How about angels?' Ginny dreamily murmured.
She frowned, 'I wonder.' Hermione didn't doubt the possibility. But the magical world didn't really talk about faith. Did they even believe in an afterlife? She hoped there was something, because the thought of her loved ones just disappearing was terrifying. What if death was it, and she never had an opportunity to speak to them again?
Her frowned deepened, because she didn't consider herself very religious. Where had such a depressing thought come from?
'Angels? I'm right here.' Ron loudly said.
Everyone burst out laughing. For her, it was relief, and she ignored her negative thoughts. Today was a happy day! It was rare that they were all together like this.
Hermione rolled over so that she was looking at him, grinning from ear to ear, 'That's certainly true. I don't know why anyone would doubt it.'
She gently touched his forehead, sweeping his pretty red hair out of his face. She adored his red hair. Couldn't get enough of it.
He grinned like a little kid, 'Hello beautiful. Don't stop petting me now.'
She flushed bright red and immediately pulled back. Fanning herself she looked over at her friends.
Harry, Ron, Ginny, and the twins were all here. Trying to sound composed, she declared in her most serious voice, 'I read about it. Ron popped up in the abridged version of Hogwarts, A History.'
'Strange....' Harry raised an eyebrow, 'I read the same thing, only it was in The Quibbler.' Harry said in a deadpan voice.
For a moment, they simply stared at each other.
And then everyone burst out laughing, and Hermione collapsed back onto Ron, her head resting against his heart as she shook from the force of her laughter. She loved being with him like this, with everyone. Feelings of warmth flooded her, and a kind of light euphoria from all the laughter made her light-headed. It was a blessing to laugh in such dark times....
Suddenly, there was a sharp wind, and the air became heavier. Thicker. Humid.
Oh no, she thought with dismay, my hair is going to get all frizzy now! Ron will tease me!
But it was so strange, she also thought, sitting up. The tree branches were knocking into each other, leaves fluttered wildly, and overhead the sky quickly went from blue to an angry bruised color.
'We should head back,' Ginny announced, 'I heard it's supposed to rain later. Flash thunder storms all week.'
Hermione groaned, 'But it's so nice out, and it's rare that we are all together like this.' She nestled closer to Ron's chest, 'I like it here. It's so peaceful.'
Wake up.
Hermione frowned. That was odd. She looked over at her friends, but no one seemed to hear anything. She sighed, plucking a piece of grass. Maybe she was going the direction of Harry. Hearing voices and such.
'Hey Harry-'
No one was there. The open field was desertted, and the wind began to howl.
She was alone.
And that thought filled her with panic. Her heart pounded painfully in her chest, and she felt like she would pass out. Her head whipped around to see if Ron was gone.
He was there...
And she sighed, relieved. Just seeing him calmed her.
....Only Ron didn't look very healthy.
In fact, she thought, he looked like he could do for a trip to Madam Pomfrey's, and she told him so.
He was a rotting corpse.
All that mattered was that he was here with her, regardless of his appearance.
Part of his face was missing, and he had difficulty speaking. But the silver platter he held, with Harry's head, had no trouble speaking.
'Of course we will!'
'Will what?' She frowned, 'And where is your body? You are going to need a big dose of skele-grow Harry--'
'We will remember this place..'
Hermione rolled her eyes. That wasn't what she was talking about. Nor was it important. Harry needed to take better care of himself! So she turned to Ginny to complain.
And gaped.
'Hermione, it's rude to stare.' Ginny stared at her, only it was an enormous white rabbit, with Ginny's voice.
Hermione wondered if she would have a permanent frown on her face after today, because Ginny had red hair and if she had red hair then it was only natural that she would be a red rabbit. She even went so far as to tell her this, but this clearly offended her. 'How rude. I am leaving.'
Ron frowned, and his arm fell off. He wanted to pick it up, but he didn't want to drop Harry's head. So he politely asked Hermione to hold the platter, and she agreed. Somewhere behind her she could hear the sound of a voice yelling.
WAKE UP!
Dozens of images flashed through her mind, too quickly to understand. It was chaotic, and disjointed. She was falling through space and time and any second she would surely die...
And just like that Hermione went from being asleep to being a wake, only she was laying on the floor, blankets tangled about her shaking limbs.
Wildly she looked she around.
There was no Harry or rotting Ron or rabbit Ginny. No field or storm. It had all been...
'...a dream?'
She was at home. In her room. Alone.
She wiped her forehead, discovering she was sweating. Her hands felt clammy, and on top of that she had nausea.
Before she could make sense of her surreal dream, her mother burst into the room wearing an oversized night gown and a look of concern.
'Was I yelling again?' Hermione managed to whisper.
Her mother jerked her head up and down, clearly wanting to say something, but all she said was, 'But not as bad as last time.' She hesitated, 'Would you like some tea? You didn't eat anything tonight.'
She nodded her head, grateful. How many times had she woken up like this? Would she never get better?
She stared at the empty doorway where her mother used to be, fighting the inexplicable urge to cry. It had been half a year since the dark lord was vanquished. At such a high cost...it seemed more 'light' forces had been vanquished than 'dark'. After all, almost everyone, including the Malfoys, had been pardoned for a second time. And it was a sad reality but most were pardoned because there were simply few experienced witches and wizards left. The Ministry had been decimated; so had the school staff. The only way to move forward, it seemed, was to compromise.
So many dead. And for what? Because of some crazy man's dream? It wasn't fair.
She felt awful, because she had lost her lover, her friends, her very happiness. Most of all she missed Ron.
She couldn't even speak to the Weasley's without crying. And so many were missing...
A lot of bodies were never recovered. Like Ginny's. Luna Lovegood's. The Twins.
'Here, some chamomile dearest,' Her mother handed her a cup of tea.
Why couldn't I go with them, she used to think, why not? She even held the razor once. Why should she live and they die? But in the end she hesitated. Always a coward.
They called it survivor's guilt. But it didn't matter. She was a coward. She couldn't hurt herself. She hated pain, feared it the most.
Why do you grieve?
Immediately she froze.
Where had that thought come from?
'Hermione? Are you okay?'
Her mother was staring at her searchingly. 'Yeah.' She set the tea on her night stand, 'I think I'm going to try to get some sleep. Thanks mom...'
Her mom gave her that dazzling smile, 'I am happy.'
She waited for her to leave, and then her tears began to fall.
She was doing so good too.
Do not cry.
Jerking her head up, she looked around. What...?
'H-hello?'
Several moments passed.
All she heard was silence.
Of course. Why shouldn't she?
Because she was completely, absolutely alone.
