Chapter 2
Harry woke to what sounded like the crackling of a fire. He opened his eyes to see the chamber completely transformed. The water was gone, the coldness of the room had been swept away under the glow of a fire coming from the mouth of Salazar Slytherin. A couch of burgundy velour presented itself for his use and he stood to accept it. The floor was covered in a deep blue velvet rug and small sconces lit the walls. He stretched, surprised to find his aches and pains did not present themselves. He patted his back pocket to find his wand still present and moved to the center of the chamber and took a seat, stretching his hands towards the warmth of the fire.
Four silvery figures floated towards him as if in procession. They came down the long walk flanked by the serpents on either side. Harry had nothing left in him to fear anything now. They stopped just at the edge of the half circle of the chamber. The first a tall elegant male, dressed in a suit with a tight waistcoat floated towards him first. Harry smiled, and wondered if they were taking turns.
The elegant male turned towards him and smiled.
"I take it you know who I am." Godric stated more than he asked.
Harry nodded, "All of you actually, I have had a lot of time to research you all on my own outside of these walls. Voldemort was obsessed with each of you."
They all seemed to nod solemnly.
"Well, since you were sorted into my house first, I have the special opportunity to be the first in line." Godric informed him. Harry nodded and just stared up at the ghost.
"There is more to you than what you have done, Harry. I know right now you feel drained and ready to let it go. But today, we offer you a unique life, one that we hope can fulfill you today and in the future." the ghost emphasized his words with his hands in a flourish.
Harry just stared back at the ghost with eyes that had seen too much.
Godric stroked his chin before floating back to confer with his fellow ghosts. It was the larger woman who floated to Harry next. She bent down in front of him.
"You never have been ordinary, Harry. That does not mean you cannot now enjoy the life of simple pleasures and simple aggravations. We only mean to offer you a reason to stay." Helga's voice was soft and motherly.
Harry's eyes filled with moisture, he had been sure that there was nothing left, but he was wrong. The tears overflowed his eyes, no matter how much he breathed to try to keep them at bay.
"There are people who can give you what you seek. And they will still provide you with the push and pull you need. Let us guide you." Helga whispered.
"Love is a myth, it is a ghost on the wind of hypocrisy. It is only attainable by those lucky enough to grasp it. I am no such person, I am what Death desires since I have slipped his grasp for so long. Anyone who will deign to love me, be close to me would fall quickly to Death's embrace. I only want to join those who have sacrificed so much..." Harry's anguish was written all over his face as he spoke.
It was the stoic woman with dark hair that floated to him next, followed by the man whose face marked the chamber.
Ghostly silver eyes peered back at Harry, Rowena spoke next.
"You seek to feel love Harry. That is not what love is. You are the embodiment of love for all to see. Your determination, wisdom, loyalty and cunning are all the hallmarks of love. Your love is what destroyed the Dark Lord. And those around you could not help but love you. Death is not eager to possess you simply because you have failed to die at the attempts of a mad man. Your pain makes you blind."
Salazar looked down his nose at the boy, "Even I see the power of love within you. Not all the traits I have are evil, boy." Harry just looked back at the man, waiting. This one was the enigma that Harry had yet to unravel.
Salazar seemed to latch on to the interest.
"You want to know why, don't you boy?"
Harry nodded.
"Because I valued power above all else. Because I could not see past my own nose until I left. It was not until I met and experienced what love really was that I understood my own failings. The curse upon this chamber was one I could not lift even after my acknowledgements. I tried to erase the chamber from memory of those who knew about it, but I did not reach everyone that I had bragged to it about. Do you know why I changed, boy?" Salazar asked.
Harry barely shook his head, entranced with the tale.
"I fell in love with a witch, she was beautiful beyond compare. She was cunning, so cunning in fact that she hid from me her heritage until after our child was born. I had come to love her, trust her, and that by the time that she revealed her heritage of being a muggle born witch, I could not despise her. She was clever, more clever than me by far." Salazar said quietly.
"When you open your eyes, Harry, the world can hold new meaning." Rowena stated calmly.
Harry nodded, yet still he felt so hollow. It was as if his tether to life was lifted, gone and wispy.
"What is left for me? I feel as if I have nothing left to give." Harry was somber in his plea.
"Harry, my boy, you have so much left to give. And someone is here on the grounds for you to share life with. We can feel it." Godric supplied.
"I feel nothing for Ginny, we had a spark, but no fire." Harry replied flatly.
Salazar chuckled, "Yes, well a spark is not a flame. Have you never burned before in the presence of anyone particular?"
Harry nodded, "Twice, but there was no love. I have learned the burn of hate runs deeper and hotter."
Rowena, Helga, Godric and Salazar looked at each other and smirked.
"Ahhh, tell me Harry... Who is it that can cut your heart like a hot knife through butter?" Rowena asked.
"I had a professor, his stare would flay the soul, his words could ricochet for hours inside my head and keep me bleeding. And then there was a rival, whose stare was ice inside my heart burning it with the cold, words were of no matter, just a tone could cause me utmost pain." Harry said shivering under the onslaught of memories and a deluge of grief all over again.
"One's name is carved into your very stone." Harry said directing one glazed stare towards Salazar.
Salazar floated over towards the stone face and examined it.
"The other is yet living?" Godric asked quietly.
"Yes, but he is not here. His parents fled with him before the final fight." Harry informed them.
Helga was about to say something when Rowena shook her head.
Salazar floated back, leveling Harry with a sincere look.
"Do you remember the words spoken on your very first potions lesson?" Salazar asked.
"How could I forget, 'I can teach you how to bewitch the mind, and ensnare the senses. I can tell you how to bottle fame, brew glory, and even put a stopper in death.'" Harry repeated automatically, "It was the single most interesting introduction to any magical class I had."
Salazar looked over at Rowena, "Did the hat say he was intelligent?"
Rowena looked taken aback, "Of course he is, and that doesn't mean that his intelligence is affected by his inability to read into every word. His wisdom in his choices alone would have landed him in my house."
Salazar grinned and nodded, "of course, no offense." Then he turned to Harry, "Do you think you could repeat the last line one more time..."
Harry just looked at the ghost with a more quizzical expression than before... He thought back to what Professor Snape had said about potions.
'Bottle fame and brew glory' reminded him of the Felix potion, bewitch the mind, well there were a lot of potions for that plus the art of ligillemens. Ensnare the senses, oh all those love potions were coming to mind. Then his heart stuttered. His blood raced.
"Godric, I think he got it." Helga said excitedly.
"Um..." Harry started to fidget, his eyes seemed to return to a fiery emerald state, He was more anstey than he had been walking to his death.
Godric floated close, Helga held his hand and reached out her other one, until all four ghosts encircled Harry.
"Hogwarts protect, Hogwarts revive, live on in those who survive. Unity collide, within this soul, preserve that which is whole. Preserve our traits, in this our son, until we meet another worthy one."
A silver mist circle formed from their clasped hands and descended down to engulf Harry. Instinctively he inhaled sharply and the mist disappeared within him and he slumped unconscious on the couch.
"Our chosen one..." They said, and the castle shook.
