With the signature pop of apparition we appeared in front of the gates of Hogwarts. It felt odd to be standing here, with my hand on Snape's elbow. I was coming back as a Professor and somebody's mate. I saw Hogwarts with a different set of eyes, no longer was this a retreat from being the odd girl. This was now my home or so it was supposed to be. Instead I felt trapped, caged, imprisoned.
I felt a slight tug on my arm as Professor Snape stepped forward, opening the gates with a touch of his wand. "We'll have to get you set up with the gate code," he murmured, completely ignoring my momentary paralysis.
We made our way further up to the castle; quietly walking passed the Black Lake and the Whomping Willow. I felt a crick in my throat, the warning sign of tears.
"Pull yourself together, Hermione."
I was slightly shocked that the Professor had even noticed. But then again, he had always noticed everything. "Yes, sir," I muttered and felt his arm stiffen under my touch.
"Please don't remind me that you once were my student," his voice sounded rough, as if it pained him to say the words. He hadn't asked to use his first name; he had assumed that I would. I took a huge breath, steadied myself for a moment, "you're right, Severus."
This time it was Severus' turn to need a minute. "I never would have imagined Hermione Granger would admit she was wrong."
For a moment I thought he was being facetious, but one look at his face showed his was trying to make a joke. There was a glimmer in his eye and a slight smirk on his lips. "Oh ha ha ha, Severus, ha ha." I resisted the urge to playfully slap his arm, as I would with Harry or Ron.
We made the final steps into the castle together. As soon as the door opened Professor McGonagall wrapped me in her arms. "I am so glad to see you here my dear," she whispered in my ear. She let me go but held me at arm’s length and she looked me over. Like a mother would check her child after a long absence. She shook her head lightly, "we'll need to send some food up once you're settled in."
I had lost some weight since Minerva had last seen me. Between the war and stress of the Statute, nothing seemed to appeal to me. I smiled politely and nodded my head, of course she would feel protective of me.
"We'll see you at dinner Minerva. I believe Hermione will need a few moments to adjust." Severus said in a tone that left no room for argument. His usual teacher tone had made a comeback faster than I could say Quidditch. He placed his hand on my lower back and gently pushed me forward. We went up the stairs and towards an unused section of the castle.
We stopped outside of a statue of a snake and a lion fighting. I vaguely heard Severus mutter "I, Severus Snape, sell my sperm to the Ministry," before the statue turned to grant us access to our new home. "Your password is your little joke."
"Wait, I thought your chambers were in the dungeons?" I couldn't stop myself from asking as we walked through.
Severus took careful time removing his traveling cloak, "yes, but ours are here. As you noticed this wing is unused. This is a wing specifically designed for married Professors." He took a seat in front of the fire and cracked a book, oblivious to my surprised stare.
I shook my head and started investigating the chambers. The living room the statue opened into held a fireplace, a sitting area with plush cream colored couches and wall to wall bookshelves. "This room hardly seems child friendly," I said to myself.
Severus heard me though, "our chambers will adjust to our needs. As of right now we need a place to house all our books and relax. When we have a child, it will change."
The castle was always very intuitive to its inhabitants needs. I silently continued my exploration. There were two doors leading off the sitting room as well as an archway to a darkened room. As I stepped into the space candles lit around the walls, illuminating a dining room with a table for eight made out of a deep wood. The table was set for a regal dinner, with tall candles and expensive china.
I made my way around the room and opened one of the curtains. The view was spectacular, the Black Lake stretching past the horizon surrounded by mountains and the Forbidden Forest. I felt my breath catch, my childhood memories laying in front of me. Slowly I walked from window to window, opening the curtains. The candles instantly dimmed themselves.
Like a child I ran my hand across the stones as I walked to the first door leading off the sitting room. As I pushed it open I was greeted by the sterile look of a well-kept bathroom. It held a double vanity topped with a large and well lit mirror, a large bathtub with a separate, glass-encased, shower and finally a toilet sat in the corner, hidden by a small wall. Everything was white with a gold trim, it looked modern yet classy.
Next to a well-stocked linen closet was a door leading to the one and only bedroom. Gingerly I pushed it open, scared of what I'd see on the other side. A king size four poster bed draped with blue gauze curtains stood in the middle, the sheets and blankets matched the gauze and were soft to the touch. On each bedside stood a nightstand, the left had been claimed with books and a half empty glass of water. A large wardrobe stood to the right side of the bed, half of it had been filled with Severus' dark garb while the other half seemed to be waiting for my items. The room held several sconces but the light was pouring in from the alcove across from the bed. The deep velvet curtains were drawn open, illuminating the pillowed bench that seemed to invite me to sit and read.
My tour of my new home was over, so I started unpacking my things. Retracing my steps in reverse, first my clothes, then my bathroom trinkets and my finally my book collection. My beaded purse felt lighter but it I still didn't feel at ease.
Once I had placed everything I could think of in its appropriate place, I found myself back at the alcove, staring at the Black Lake as if it held the answers to my worries. I jumped slightly as Severus cleared his throat behind me.
"Have you snooped around enough to have something to eat?"
I wanted to shake my head, say I wasn't hungry, when my stomach rumbled. "I'll take that as a yes," he said as he walked back to the dining area. I followed behind him, scuffing my feet like a petulant child. "Miss Granger!" He snapped, making me jump out of my skin, "I understand that this is quite the unpleasant situation. Behaving like a student instead of an adult will not make this any easier."
I was completely gob smacked, I had never expected him to call me out on my behavior. Nor had I expected the lunch he had set up for the both of us. It wasn't a regal meal, but it was thoughtful. "The elves told me bouillabaisse is your favorite," he said as he pulled out the chair and motioned for me to take a seat. He pushed the seat in as I sat, "thank you Severus. I'm sorry for my behavior, you are right, I am behaving like a child."
"Should I become used to being right, Hermione?" I snorted lightly and was about to retort when I saw the glimmer of amusement in his eyes. It suited him, being amused. "Bon appetite," I said as I lifted the fragrant stew to my lips. It was absolutely exquisite, making a moan escape my lips. I attacked the crusty bread and seafood with fervor, forgetting all else in the room. A chuckle came from across the table, "when was the last time you ate?"
He seemed amused and concerned by my behavior. I sat for a moment, and pondered his question, when had my last meal been? "I'm not sure, to be honest," I answered with a shrug. My bowl was empty and my stomach was settled. With a scrape of his chair, Severus stood up and helped me out of mine.
"I will see you at dinner, I will be in my office for the afternoon." He said it as if he owed me an explanation. Everything he had done all day had been kind and out of character. I wanted to ask him why, scream at him to behave like the prat I had known since I was eleven. Yet, I stood next to our dining room table, mouth agape once again. Never in a million years had I thought I could have a peaceful meal with Severus Snape. Or that he would have been as kind as he had been all day. This last month had been full of surprises.
