Chapter 2 Training
Sleep is hard for one Severus Snape. As he was an only child, he was used to being alone. Unfortunately at Hogwarts, he shared his dorm with Anvil Yaxley, a very stupid first-year who was trying to snore his ears off. In Cokeworth, all he usually had to worry about hearing were his mother’s screams. Or his father’s yelling for that matter. Now he had to get used to sleep apnea. It could be worse.
Severus was always the type to worry a problem to death, be it existent or imaginary, so Severus was up, listening to the snores of his roommate, thinking about Lucius Malfoy.
Why would someone who had money, status, and prestige, in their right mind, befriend a little insignificant whelp like Severus Snape? Severus didn’t know that Lucius Abraxas Malfoy was never in his right mind, but what he did know was that there was something to be said about wanting someone under you. His father needed his mother, just as she needed him, to keep him going. Who else would put up with his insane need to hit and scream all the time? Lucius Malfoy was a force on his own, but if he was ever going to be the type of person to cower the masses, he needed practice. He needed an understudy, a lackey, a punching bag, a crash test dummy. Severus was knowledgeable enough of the world to know that leadership required cultivation, and Lucius didn’t just want to lead, he wanted, needed, to be adored. That wasn’t going to happen wide scale any time soon, but he had the adoration of Slytherin House, and in particular, Severus Tobias Snape.
His roommate stopped snoring then. It was eerily quiet, like it hadn’t been all year, and despite Severus thinking the snoring had been keeping him up, he realized abruptly that this was not the case. There was no more background noise to drift into his mind. Only silence was available then. It sent a suffocating pain right into the heart of the weary boy. He was tired, so frightfully tired. Not just any form of tired, but tired of being lonely. Sure, he had Lily, and what a girl his best friend was. But... that was only one part of his loneliness. Inside of him was a succession of other feelings and urges. A whole chain of feelings that he didn’t yet understand. A capacity to love that was beyond his years, and a heart so big he would drown in his own emotions a million time before he learned how to mask them. Here, in this quiet, Severus ached. He ached about his mother, he ached about the love he knew he deserved from his father, and he ached especially about feeling alone in a crowd. The worst kind of isolation being the isolation of the introvert.
He was interrupted for the second time in twelve hours by a knock at the door. Severus didn’t know who would come to his room at this time of night, which a quick tempus revealed was four in the morning. The six months he’d been here, there’d never been a nightly check to see if they were all in bed, so this visitor had to be a student, and one who wasn’t worried about being caught out of bed.
He opened the door to reveal this daring soul to be non-other than his etiquette teacher. “Severus, come on, sleepyhead. We have work to do." There stood Lucius Malfoy, heir to the Malfoy fortune, looking ruffled and sleepy, yawning and such. "If anyone catches me in this hallway I'll be tarnished, get a move on."
Severus glanced back at his nearly-dead roommate, as if he was going to wake up and protest to this. As no such thing happened of course, a PJ clad Severus left his room to follow Lucius to who-knows-where.
They made their way to Lucius’ dorm, which he shared with no one. If that didn’t scream pureblood privilege, Severus wasn’t sure what would.
As Severus walked through the door, he was mesmerized. Who knew this type of luxury could be found at a boarding school. Lucius’ rooms were bathed in royal purple and slytherin green. Everything looked expensive. The drapes, the chairs, the carpet, everything. Severus hadn’t meant to be staring, but for a poor boy from a run-down neighborhood, this was the stuff of magazines and movies, and he was in awe.
Lucius, for his part, just pulled Severus from the doorway where he was gaping and into the middle of the room.
“What are we doing?" Severus asked, quite intrigued, and still very shocked.
“You’re going to dress like a pureblood." Lucius said, eyes gleaming with the type of shine that could only be considered bad news. It unfortunately made Severus very anxious about what exactly the look entailed.
Lucius went to his bureau and picked out a silver silk shirt, and black slacks." These are too small for me, I think they'll do." Severus had never worn silk. Severus had never even seen silk in person. All of Severus’ clothes were either sewn by his mother, or hand-me-downs from the boy across the street, Wesley. He thought his hand-me-downs were the closest he’d ever get to having good clothes. At least Wesley’s mother bought his clothes from the little store on the corner.
The pants Lucius brought him would have brought tears to his eyes if his father hadn’t beaten it into him that boys don’t cry. They were a little bit too long, but Lucius, never one to surrender a moment to show off, instantly resized them with magic. He brought Severus a hair ribbon and requested he tie his hair back. Severus didn’t know if the bow in the back was appropriate for boys, but the look in Lucius’ eyes while he was taking in his creation was enough to quell Severus.
After that, the real fun began. It took Lucius hours to get Severus to sit up straight, hold his head right, and walk like he wanted. When he was acceptable, Severus felt like a very lucky show pony. At seven, they walked out to breakfast, to stares and whispers. Severus, who had yesterday sat at the end of the table, now sat right in the middle, at Lucius' left flank. Lucius had told him before they descended that he’d need to ignore everyone, because they were insignificant, unworthy of his time. A little nagging thought in the back of his head told him that he’d be treating everyone like they treated him, but he silenced that thought quicker than he ever thought was possible.
As they sat, Severus was introduced to the beautiful Narcissa Black, who was Lucius's betrothed, and Severus was instantly jealous of her. She was so dainty and held herself so well, and not to mention she was getting married to royalty. Then walked in an absolute stunner, Bellatrix Black. Severus was instantly taken back to last night, when the girl had looked at him, instead of looking through him. An accident it may have been, and she more than corrected it when she walked away, but Severus had been knocked out, and now was head over heels for the brunette, and Lucius could tell.
Lucius leaned over and whispered to Severus, “If you want something, go after it. Tell Bella that you admire her grace. Introduce yourself. Don’t be the person you were yesterday, be the person you will be tomorrow.”
Severus had never heard better advice.
As the day wound on, Severus was only astounded more by how much purchase having Lucius Malfoy leading you had.

“Lily, you will not believe the day I've had." Severus collapsed back unto his bed, in quite the amount of pain from sitting up straight all day. He was currently talking to his best friend Lily, whom he had pooled all his allowance with, which was a measly sum, and purchased two-way mirrors. Being that the two friends were in different houses, and he couldn’t see how Lucius would take to him talking to a Gryffindor, let alone a mudblood, he was especially glad they had them.
“You were walking with Lucius Malfoy, King of the snobs, and smiling all day." Lily did not look happy that Severus had made such a friend.
“That’s not nice Lily, he is trying to help me fit in with the Slytherins." Severus couldn’t understand. Why did she sound like that was the end of the universe? He had felt out of place all year, and now he finally found a spot and she wasn’t happy for him?
“You don't need to fit in with those jerks, you didn't even hang out with me today, and I think they're rubbing off my pumpkin." Lily, in her defense, got the same vibe from Lucius as she got from her own sister Petunia. Utter loathing for anything not in line with the pureblood/high-class agenda. Petunia was from the same small town in Cokeworth her and Severus were, but she had her eyes on being a trophy wife in Sussex on day.
“Don’t be silly, Lucy wanted me to get to know his posse, that's all. How’s about I hang out with you for sure tomorrow?" Severus didn’t know how he was going to come through on his offer, but he had to placate her somehow.
“Lucy?" Lilly giggled.
"He doesn't know I call him that." Severus was shocked he’d said that out loud. He had no idea if that would go over well or not, but he didn’t think he wanted to find out.
“After one day Severus?" Lily was worried for her friend. Severus usually had good judgment, but this time she knew he was in for trouble.
“Do I hear a hint of jealously there, Missy?" Severus teased.
“No.” Lily decided to give up. She knew first-hand just how stubborn her friend could be, she just hoped he didn’t hurt himself.
“You are." Severus was sure she was just jealous. After all, they had been best friends since practically forever, and she was used to his undivided attention.
“Whatever, just don't come crying to me when they dump you on your ass." Lily replied, she was just going to have to wait and see.
“It’s actually the Gryffindor’s trying to dump me on my ass Lils." Severus retorted.
"Good night, Severus." Lily was upset. But she will get over it. She was Severus' best friend after all. She couldn’t hold a grudge forever, she wasn’t old enough.
