A/N: Thanks for the encouraging reviews so far. ^.^ I know the first chapter was just more of an intro; quite a few will be more informational on where I'm going, but please bare with me. I'm starting on Chapter 5, so you can see how slow going it is. Can't promise a chapter a day or even a week, but I will try. Again characters are not mine, I make no money, and I'm guessing with names and such. ^.^ Enjoy!
Chapter 2: Revelations
Hermione had noticed a few things this year; one, Ron was acting like a complete pig again. She thought they got past this stage last year, but when they realized they were better off as friends, he seemed to go back to being a man-whore chasing after anything in a skirt that batted eyelashes and giggled. She at least was grateful that he never went so far as to actually sleep with them, just some flirting and such, but there’s only been a few that he’s kissed and both he said weren’t ‘right’. Of course it may have been something she said about telling Molly of his treatment of the girls at school. She smirks, but it doesn’t last long. The second was a two part concern; Draco Malfoy. Over the summer she had some really enlightening dreams, which upon further examination, and a little truthful admission, she discovered she found the prat very attractive. She had become quite upset, after all Malfoy was a heavy ‘Pureblood supremacy’ follower and she was a ‘mud blood’. Oh how she hated that term! Her mother caught her moping one day and so she told her, leaving out the dreams of course, that she found herself attracted to someone who was quite mean to her. Her mother tried to help her, but Hermione didn’t think it was just as simple as that.Flashback**
“Hermione dear, your father and I are worried; what has you looking as if you were told you couldn’t get that one-of-a-kind rare book?”
She gave a soft chuckle, it would be an accurate description. “Sorry mum, I just got to thinking and evaluating some conflicting feelings I had and came to a rather unhappy conclusion.”
“It’s not about your friend Ron, is it? You did say you two were better off as friends.”
“No mum, it’s not Ron. I found that I’m quite attracted to someone who hates me, and I really want to get to know him, but I know he wouldn’t give me a moment unless it was to sneer and hurl insults.” Hermione sighs and puts her head in her hands.
“Oh, dear, maybe it’s not as bad as you think.” Jean sat down beside her daughter and rubbed circles on her back in comfort.
“Mum, the boy’s name is Draco Malfoy.” She looked up to see her mother’s reaction.
Jean sits and thinks a moment as to where she heard that name. It wasn’t one of her Housemates, she was sure; someone in a different House then, someone who has been nasty…Oh!
“He’s that ‘spoiled rich Slytherin’ boy that gives you and your friends a hard time each year, right?” At Hermione’s nod, Jean thinks again.
“Well you know Hermione, sometimes boys will act out when they like someone but don’t know how to deal with it. If this Mr. Malfoy has been raised to believe that…Purebloods wasn’t it?” At her daughter’s nod she continues, “That Purebloods were better, then he meets someone like you who isn’t a Pureblood and is better, well a child’s mind doesn’t know how to deal with it properly. Less so if they are spoiled; enter into puberty and if he finds himself attracted to someone like you, well he may just react with more rude behavior.”
“MUM!” Hermione was a deep red at the thought Malfoy may find her attractive. As much as she wished it, she couldn’t entertain thoughts like that or it’ll only hurt more.
“I don’t mean to sound harsh Hermione, but many boys do that. It has a lot to do with their insecurities and conflicts between their emotions. Not all young men can behave with a level of maturity that some young women have during that time. You’ll find some young men may behave just as badly as some eleven year olds.”
“I doubt he’ll feel anything but disgust towards me.”
“I can’t say for sure one way or the other, Hermione, but it is something I have seen time and time again in my own years at school. Some boys get extremely shy and tongue tied, others will overly flirt to inspire jealousy in the one they truly want, and some lash out harshly towards the one they really want. There is a saying that has been proven time and time again; there’s a fine line between love and hate. Truly, it is only our minds that makes the distinction; but in both we find great passion.” Jean pats her back and stands, “Come help me prepare dinner; you’ll find out one way or another during the coming school year I’m sure, and fretting or making decisions now won’t do you any good.”
End Flashback**
She supposed this early into the term it wouldn’t do good to worry about it, but she did notice Malfoy seemed a bit different this year. Not so many nasty things, or any words really, and he seemed very skittish so far. He also looked so tired and…lost…that she caught herself a few times wanting to offer help. She’s sure that would be taken well, but she knew there was something going on. She wanted to help him, she wanted to be close to him, but she didn’t want the hatred, and she didn’t know how her friends would take it. She was sure Harry would take it better than Ron.
The third part was Harry. She was used to his secretive behavior, having heard him say over and over that he doesn’t want either of them hurt because of him, but now he doesn’t even tell them about his visions. He’s had a few so far already, and she only knows that because of Ron and the other sixth year boys talking to her about it. They were all concerned that it was getting worse; Harry was having more convulsions and even was talking in his voice during some of them. Of course it was quietly and only Ron knew of it, but it bothered her that Harry hasn’t come to them yet. She didn’t know how to approach him with so many of their housemates around, and they didn’t seem to have much time together anymore.
Just as she was contemplating dragging Harry off after lunch, in he walks through the portrait hole and looks right at her. He motions for her to follow and leads the way up to the boy’s dorm, where he asks all but Ron to leave. Since Ron had just discussed with the other boys giving him and Harry some time to talk uninterrupted, which they all agreed, they left without argument or fuss. Hermione set up the silencing wards and her and Ron sat to face Harry expectantly.
“I know I haven’t talked much about what’s been going on, but now things are getting a bit extreme and, well, it’s more than just me that has stakes in this. I know you guys are my best mates, but I need to ensure no one can gleam information from you two, including Vertiserum or Legilimency.” He looked pleadingly at his two friends, hoping they could trust him with such little information; he knew he needed people on his side, and these two have been through everything.
“Harry, mate, you know we wouldn’t betray you, however I know this uncertainty is mostly because of me and my temper. Since I can’t promise to never blow my top,” Ron smiles, glad to see an echoing smile in the faces of both Hermione and Harry, “I can accept and agree with your caution. Plus knowing how Legilimency and Vertiserum works, I can understand how having something to keep your secrets safe from such things is warranted, especially now. What?” He looks between their shocked faces, “I’ve had time to grow and learn a few big words, ‘Mione.” He sticks his tongue out and the three break up into laughter.
“I also agree, but Harry, who else besides the obvious are you wary about getting the information? None of the other students are proficient with Legilimency and using Vertiserum on a student is against the law.”
“I’ll let you know after you take the oath.” After a nod from each, Harry preforms the necessary actions to help keep their information secret between only those acknowledged by the oath to have the same bond. He even took part in the same oath, though Ron and Hermione knew a certain someone may have easier access to his mind regardless.
“Alright, the most I have to worry about is Dumbledore getting the information. Snape had already confirmed that Dumbledore knows Legilimency, and after thinking about it for a while, realized he has no problem with looking into a student’s mind if he thinks they have information he needs or wants. This bond will help protect us from his invasion, even if we do manage to learn Occlumency. Plus from anyone else who may know how to use the Mind arts, it can’t hurt.” He then proceeds to explain about his visions and how they’ve grown more…violent. He also explained how he’s had to inform Snape and McGonagall about them as, after speaking with the two, he had one. Ron and Hermione were both shocked at him having a vision during the day. They spent time discussing how things were changing and catching up since they all haven’t had a chance to really talk.
Ron admitted to becoming more open minded after concluding that there were plenty of interesting females from other houses he wouldn’t mind getting to know, but clammed up red faced after that. Hermione also admitted to liking someone of a different house and is worried about their reactions to who it is; not yet ready to reveal the identity as she wasn’t sure there was any hope.
“Really ‘Mione, any bloke would be glad to be hooked up with you.” Ron sent her a smile, already having his suspicions. Harry too had his suspicions, though he personally thought it wouldn’t be too difficult if he could forget some of his past.
The Trio was glad to have gotten the talks done, as they have grown closer once more. Over the next few weeks they found a rhythm of both research and normal class work, Harry and Ron even helping in the library when they had many things to look into. They were also joined by Luna and Neville, and also by some from other Houses, all but Slytherin. It wasn’t a big surprise to Harry, as that group had more at stake since they couldn’t let much known to their own house, much less others. Plus they wouldn’t even know who to talk to, to offer up their side. Harry had decided it was a new side in the war he was creating, one not reliant on Dumbledore or supporting Voldemort, and though right now it was made up of mostly students with only two Professors, he was sure more adults will be included in time.
It was when they were studying in the library one day that Hermione and Harry discovered who had caught Ron’s eye. A small group of Slytherins had entered, the normal group these days; Malfoy, Parkinson, Zabini, and the two Greengrass sisters. Immediately the two boys were excluded, as they both knew Ron was strictly a skirt-chaser; out of the three however they noticed Ron seemed to watch Parkinson more when she went off by herself to gather a book. The two looked at each other and smiled, Harry went back to his writing and Hermione glanced back over at the small group. Her breath caught, her smile frozen on her face, as her eyes caught the silvery blue gaze of Malfoy. She noticed the tired expression and mussed up hair that was no longer slicked back, but what struck her was the pleading gaze she caught before he turned back to his book. She looked over to Harry and Ron to see if they saw it too, but the two boys were busy; Ron was covertly watching Parkinson and Harry was reading very thoroughly. At first she didn’t believe Harry when he said he was going to focus on his studies, but now she knew he meant it. He spent nearly as much time as she did in the library, and he asked for her assistance in better penmanship with the quill more than where to find the answers. She glanced back at Malfoy and caught Zabini’s gaze. He raised an eyebrow, glanced over to Malfoy then her, and grinned. She felt her cheeks heating up and quickly looked down.
Blaise Zabini was as observant as most Slytherins, but he passed a lot of his observations off as flirtatious looks. He had a reputation as a bit of a playboy, and he used that to his advantage. He had noticed Draco’s gazes to Granger, small as they were, and the glances she would give back. Knowing Draco’s father and the mess he was in, he very well knew Draco had to decide on a path and couldn’t sit on the fence as others could. Either he followed his heart and shunned that bastard his father followed, or he turned away from happiness to follow his father’s mistakes. He’s also noticed the mess Draco has become this year, which spoke of a great deal of stress, heartache, and fear. However he was the blonde boy’s closest friend, well male friend, and he was determined to find a way to help Draco even if the boy denied he needed it.
Granger may just be the help he was searching for. He glanced over at the other two in the Trio and noticed Weasley’s not so subtle looks. Following his gaze, Blaise nearly laughed at the irony of it all. Weasley wasn’t watching Pansy out of suspicion, he was watching her as Draco watched Granger. This was just too perfect, and what his two friends needed. Granger had intelligence that could help Draco get out of this mess, added with being the best friend of Potter who could take down that pale faced bastard, who could also extend protection. Weasley was a hot head normally, but Pansy could use the challenge of redirecting that temper, and being the only child of the Parkinson’s, who were part of the Inner Circle, doomed her to a marriage to someone just as deep in the ranks. None of them wanted to be part of it, but found little way of escaping. He watched Potter go through the books, surprised at how fast the he could read. Before Potter and Weasley seemed to just goof around and not take anything seriously; now however even Weasley studied more. Blaise was determined to help his friends, and perhaps get close to the Weasley family himself.
Daphne and Astoria watched all with knowing eyes; they had noticed subtle changes in things, especially how certain people behaved. While it wasn’t widely known, and not often used, Astoria had a bit of a Seer’s gift that came in handy now and then. She couldn’t foresee prophecies, nor predict futures of any person, sometimes she had an ‘intuition’ that helped her guide others to a certain path. She rarely felt the pull to do so, but last night she spoke with Daphne about helping Draco get to his path. She was sure it had to do with Potter and his friends, only knowing that Draco would be safe in the arms of a golden light. Who specifically it was, she couldn’t say as that was how her gift worked, but Daphne suggested it could be the protection of all three and not just in the embrace of one. Though with the way Granger was eyeing Draco, Astoria thinks perhaps she is the key.
Pansy happened to feel someone gazing at her and, turning as if she was looking at another shelf, looked from the corner of her eye. She quickly went behind the shelf she was looking at and rested her back against the shelves, a blush on her face. In that quick glance she caught Weasley staring at her, but not with suspicion or disgust. No, to her he looked interested and that sent a tingle down her spine. Weasley was normally a hot headed Gryffindor that seemed to hate everything Slytherin; at least in the past. Recently she noticed he doesn’t look at them with blatant disgust or try to pick fights like he used to. She noticed last year how he was getting taller and filling out, but she lost her breath on the train when she passed by his compartment and noticed him sitting, long legs stretched out to the other seat, long muscular arms crossed behind his head, and that smile on his face. Oh she had chastised herself once safely ensconced between Draco and Blaise, letting herself get so caught up on a Gryffindor; yet as the month went on she found her attraction to the red head not waning in the least.
The two knew she wanted out, her father was going to marry her off to Greg Goyle after graduation, as the Goyle’s were deep in the inner circle, and Vincent was not as smart as his friend. She had snorted, to herself, that either of the two had enough brains to be considered ‘smart’. Thankfully it wasn’t a binding marriage contract, so she wasn’t required to marry Goyle, however if she couldn’t either get away from her family or find someone else, she was well and truly stuck. She had despised her looks, she overheard many call her ‘pug faced’ and ‘ugly’; thankfully she had managed to spend time with the Greengrass’ and the sisters, Daphne and Astoria, helped her find a way to enhance her looks without glamours or other ‘alternations’ that were temporary or drastic. With her new haircut and an altered wardrobe that flattered her figure better than what she had before, Pansy noticed the subtle looks she got from guys who couldn’t believe her change. While it thrilled her, to finally get positive attention, she was cautious as many of them just wanted to get under her skirt.
The look she saw on Weasley’s face wasn’t just an interest in getting under her skirt; it seemed more like an interest in her and Pansy felt that thrill. She grabbed a book she was looking for, thankfully where she had stepped away, and walked back to her table. Right now she had to focus on her class work, but later she intended to speak with Daph and Astoria; perhaps that was her ticket out and he at least would know how to treat a woman.
Draco was feeling a lot of stress and was having trouble focusing on his class work, so it was a shock when he felt eyes on him. First he glanced at his friends, but none of them were looking at him directly, and Pansy was off looking for a book that further detailed their Charms paper. Daphne and Astoria glanced around now and then, Blaise was looking off to the side where Pansy was then off to his left, and yet now and then looked at him, still with that smirk on his face. He glanced off to the right and caught the honey brown gaze of Hermione Granger. He fought back a blush at meeting that gaze and couldn’t help the helpless gaze as he stared. She was everything he wanted in a woman, yet with their past doubted she would give him a chance. He broke his gaze and looked down at his book, the overwhelmed feelings of being stuck, helpless, and doomed swarmed over him again and he fought to control himself. Normally he would excuse himself and take refuge in either an unused classroom or the second floor girl’s bathroom. He had gotten on the good side of the ghost there and she left him alone, keeping his shameful display a secret. Those moments, he cried and was ashamed at how little control he had on himself. He refused to do so now, and swallowed down the thickness that usually came before his break down, focusing on the book until he could read the words again. He went back to writing, but glanced up and caught Blaise’s gaze. That normal smirk he had was softened and his friend’s brown eyes showed understanding and acceptance. He wasn’t sure if Blaise guessed and was alright with it, or if he was just letting Draco know he was willing to listen, but he just nodded and went back to his book. He needed to talk to his friend soon and find out where he stood and if he would be accepting if he knew who Draco fancied.
