“There he is!” the laughing, and a touch relieved, voice of Sirius greeted Harry as he walked into the floral themed room.
“I’m fine, Sirius,” Harry reassured his godfather who quickly pulled him into an uncomfortably tight hug. “Sirius, I can’t breathe!”
“Sorry, pup, I was just worried. Don’t know why I was... but every godparent is when their little pup is hitting manhood!” Sirius exclaimed, wiping an invisible tear from the corner of one of his grey eyes.
“You’re full of it, Sirius,” Harry laughed, moving out of arms reach of his godfather. “Is everyone here?”
“Yes, downstairs in the formal parlor. Your Aunt Cissa is beside herself wanting to see you, that Hermione girl keeps trying to sneak into the downstairs library and Draco seems to be coming out his blue spell after his inheritance.”
“Oh, thank, Nimue, I was afraid I was going to have to toss him in the Black Lake when we got back to school with the rate he was moaning,” Harry told Sirius before turning to the door to go down and greet his inheritance guests.
As is tradition, the morning after an inheritance is gained, a few people selected by the person inheriting gather to celebrate. At Draco’s in June, it had only been his parents, Sirius, Harry and Draco’s other close friend, Blaise Zabini, in attendance. For Hadrian’s he had invited Draco, Narcissa, Lucius, Remus Lupin and Hermione Granger.
“Hadrian!” the voice of Narcissa Malfoy welcomed them as they descended the last few steps to the ground floor.
“Morning, Aunt Cissa,” Harry greeted her, only to be pulled into a hug by the petite blonde who had taken over as Harry’s surrogate mother when Harry’s own had died.
“Morning, my handsome boy,” she pulled back to look him over, her discerning eye taking in every little change. “Well, you do look a bit better without those glasses getting in the way of those pretty eyes.”
“Men aren’t pretty, Cissa,” Sirius interrupted, flinging his arm over his cousins shoulders, almost causing her to lose her balance.
“You have the manners of a stray dog, Sirius Black!” she announced, her grey eyes glaring up at him.
“Better a stray dog than a plucked chicken,” Sirius didn’t beat around the bush, he jumped right to the term that annoyed the beautiful Veela the most, he seemed to relish in making her want to kill him.
Hadrian quickly slipped away before Narcissa could answer, and moved to the area where the rest of his guests were seated.
“One of these days, your godfather is going to push her too far and he will end up a plucked chicken,” the elegant drawl of Lucius Malfoy greeted him as Harry took a seat next to Remus on a sofa.
This was Harry’s favorite room, design-wise, with its soft cream colors and light wood tones. It was the only room his mother had completely redone, her taste was amazing and room managed to be cozy and elegant at the same time.
“Sirius can’t seem to help himself, he just loves making her angry,” Harry chuckled. “Good morning, everyone.”
“How you are feeling, Harry?” Remus asked, a warm smile on his face, not quite illuminating his tired eyes. “I see glasses are no longer needed, that must be nice.”
His guests, minus his Aunt Cissa who was near the door giving Sirius the what for, were sitting in a grouping of chairs and sofas that made a square in front of the grand fireplace. Harry and Remus shared a two-seater sofa, with Lucius and Draco sitting in two high back chairs across from Hadrian. To the right of Harry was another small sofa, where his friend Hermione sat primly, her legs crossed at her ankles.
“I am fine, just getting used to being naturally colder. And, the glasses thing is a bit odd. I have tried to push them up or adjust them a few times today, but they aren’t there.”
“That sounds like it will take it a bit getting used to, Hadrian,” Hermione answered, her brown eyes alight with curiosity. “So, was it like the books said? Did it really start exactly on time? Did you get any scale spots? Was...”
“Hermione!” Harry interrupted while laughing. “I will be more than happy to be subjugated your thorough questioning, how about after breakfast?”
Hermione had the decency to blush; she mumbled an apology while nodding her head in agreement about talking later.
“Is anyone else hungry?” Sirius asked with a smile as he dropped down next to Hermione, who managed to blush even harder when the dark haired man shot her a grin. Sirius’ hair was mussed and his dress robes were slightly smoking.
“I, for one, am starving!” Harry replied, standing from his seat, turning to see his Aunt Cissa walk up shaking her head and putting her wand away in her robe sleeve. “Sorry, Aunt Cissa, his robes are made with flame retardant spells woven into them.”
“Well, I guess I know that for next time,” Narcissa chuckled as Lucius stood from his seat to escort her to the family dining room.
As they made the short trek to the dining room, Harry and Draco fell into step with one another at the back of the group.
“So, Sirius said you were doing a bit better,” Harry inquired, looking over at his unusually quiet best friend. “Coming to terms with everything?”
“Am I coming to terms with everything?” Draco scoffed, rolling his eyes. “How does one come to terms with this atrocity?”
“That’s it!” Hadrian said, quite loud, causing everyone to stop and look at him. He switched to a far more pleasant voice before saying, “Please, everyone go and enjoy breakfast, Draco and I will join momentarily, we must have a little talk.”
“Is everything alright, Hadrian?” Narcissa asked her concerned gaze fliting between both her boys.
“Everything is fine, Aunt Cissa, I just need to get a few things straightened out with Draco before we go back to school and I accidently kill him in a fit of annoyed rage and have to brave the Forbidden Forest trying to find a good place to hide his body.” Harry replied calmly, as everyone stared at him in shock, expect for Draco, who glared his friend.
“Good, maybe you can stop this nonsense,” Lucius gave his approval as he began to steer his mate towards the dining room.
Narcissa gave one more look towards the boys, her eyes filling with sadness as she looked at Draco, before turning away to go in to the gold and ivory dining room.
Harry turned and grabbed his best friend by the collar of his shirt and dragged him back to the formal sitting room.
“Let me go, Potter! What is wrong with you?” Draco demanded, pulling away from Harry, trying to fix his white blond hair back to lie flat again and readjusting the abused collar to his dress robes.
“What’s wrong with me? What the hell is wrong with you?” Harry raged, trying hard to start yelling at the man who had been his best friend since they were both in diapers. “Everyone is finished with your complaining and moaning. You don’t even realize how much you are hurting your mum! How do you think I feel with your comments?”
Draco looked of outrage dimmed slightly; he seemed confused and torn for a moment, “What do you mean I’m hurting my mum?”
“Everyone has been trying to give you space and time; we understand that your inheritance didn’t happen as you thought it would! But, you can’t keep inflicting your anger on everyone else!” Harry continued his voice angry but hushed, not answering his friend’s question.
“You don’t understand, Hadrian!” Draco raged, not keeping his voice down. “You’ve known since you first learned what mates were and what Doms and Subs are that you were a Sub! You have been able to learn about it, deal with it and come to terms with it.”
The steam seemed to deflate Draco and he dropped down onto the sofa across from the fireplace, Harry sat down next to him, not saying anything, letting Draco continue with his feelings.
“My whole life, I’ve been raised to be a Dominant. Every Malfoy male, ever, has been a Dominant.” His pale bluish grey eyes stared off towards the fireplace, tears gathering in the corners of his eye, making them glow. “Then, to wake up after your inheritance, only to find that you are not what you’re supposed to be... you aren’t a Dominant. You’ve broken the line and you have no idea what to do.”
“I am sorry, Draco. This is a lot for you to take in, being a Sub when you were so certain you’d be a Dom, but you have to stop with the nasty comments!” Harry leaned in toward his friend, grabbing Draco’s hands and pulling the blond to face him. “Every time you say something rude and demeaning about Subs your mums eyes change, like you’ve just slapped her in the face.”
Draco’s eyes widened and his face managed to go even paler than normal.
“I had no idea, I wasn’t thinking...” Draco crumbled before Harry, his eyes dropping closed and shoulders sagging, the look of utter defeat on his face. “I didn’t even think about her.”
“Of course you didn’t. You were too busy being a selfish bastard.” Harry replied harshly. “You have the perfect source of information about Subs at your fingertips!”
When Draco just looked at his friend in confusion, Harry let out a sigh.
“Your Mum! Who do you think answered all of my questions and concerns about Subs? Your mother!” Agitated, Harry grabbed Draco’s shoulders and gave him a firm shake. “You have an amazing resource for anything you need to know about Subs! Just go ask her! And, stop speaking about her and me like we’re scum because you are one of us.”
Leaving his blond friend to think about what he just said, Hadrian left the room and started towards the formal dining room.
“Hadrian.”
Harry stopped and turned back to look at the entrance to the sitting room, where Draco stood, looking sheepish.
“I am sorry, if my moping has hurt you, I didn’t intend for that to happen.” Draco stepped out to meet him, his hands in his robe pockets and his hair still slightly mussed from Harry dragging him down the hall. “I didn’t think about hurting others, just about how I felt and you’re right, that was wrong of me.”
“Say that again?” The look of shock that settled over Harrys face was nearly comical.
“I won’t ever say those words again, Potter.” Draco smirked, letting out a little chuckle when Harry rolled his eyes and the two starting walking side-by-side to the dining room. “Let’s go celebrate your vagina growing in.”
Draco let out an “oomph” when Hadrian hit him, hard, on the arm.
“Oh, is that why you’ve been moping? You got a vagina with your inheritance?” Harry taunted back at his friend. “Well, sorry, you’re the only one of us to get one of those.”
Draco let out a laugh, glad to be over the anger and back at the teasing the two had been baiting each other with the last few months leading to their inheritances.
“No vagina here, Potter. And, as you know from the locker rooms, I have very well endowed manly equipment. No wonder I was so shocked at being a Sub... I have a dick meant for a Dom.”
Harry had to stop walking due to not being able to breathe from laughter.
“I think you may need to use my old glasses, Malfoy,” Harry managed to get out, wiping tears away. “I think you may have depth perception problems.”
Draco just chuckled at his friend, pulling a still laughing Harry into the dining room.
Albus Dumbledore sipped his special morning tea, washing away the vile taste of the multitude of potions he took shortly after waking every day. One day soon, he wouldn’t have to go to such lengths, but in order to keep what power and influence he still had, he couldn’t be seen as weak in anyway.
Stepping up into his grand circular office, he flicked his wand to make sure the portraits of former headmasters were void of their subjects whilst he went through his morning routine. No need for rumors about his health to run amongst the castles painting and then in turn get outside the castle.
The Tome of Census glowed on one of the many bookshelves, causing a frown to grace the old man’s face as he sat his tea down.
“Well, it would seem another student has gotten an inheritance, Fawkes,” Albus murmured to the young Phoenix perched next to the grand desk. “That is the twelfth one this summer, pity. But, at least we are making some improvement, our first summer here nearly every student who came of age that summer had one.”
Shaking himself out his dialogue with this avian partner, he made his way over to the shelf and picked up the large and ancient book. He had to use both hands and struggled to get it the few steps over to his desk. With a grunt, he dropped the text onto his desk, causing his tea to slosh and spill.
“I should have let those strengthening potions kick in first before picking that up, aye, old friend,” Albus wheezed at the Phoenix who had turned to look his master with concern in his gaze.
Taking a moment to sit, clean up his tea and catch his breath. The frail headmaster ran his hand over the ornate cover of the book. The Tome of Census contained information on every magical child born within Magical Britain, notes on when they were born, parentage, where they went to school and, when they became of age, if they gained in inheritance.
Unfortunately, that was always the last bit of information provided about the child, they were now an adult and nothing else would be added to their page in the book.
Albus thought back to when he first heard of the Tome, he had found mention of it in an old version of Hogwarts a History. It had been necessary during the first years of Hogwarts, the magical world wasn’t organized and there was no government to oversee populations and keep records of births. However, many decades later, a Headmaster had used the book to only select the students he felt deserved to be in Hogwarts. The outrage and disgust that a single person would have such information at their fingertips led the newly formed Board of Governors to lock the book away. They had tried to destroy it, but the protection spells had been placed on it by Rowena Ravenclaw herself, and the entire Board cursing it at the same time could not even singe the cover.
He knew when he became Headmaster that he needed that book to keep track of all the creatures defiling his school. The Ministry did not think he needed that information, as it was personal and, according to them, in no way affected the students schooling.
Albus had searched for it while he was still a student and when he became a professor. He finally found it his last year as a professor and it has served him greatly as Headmaster with his invaluable work with creatures.
He was able to figure out which children were most likely to gain inheritances due their parentage, through that was able to get many to go against their vile magical mutations. It has not been an easy quest for the man, but in the end he knew it would all be for the greater good.
Letting out a sigh, he finally opened the book and flipped to the glowing page near the back. The volume dropped open and the old man peered at the page, the glowing now fading as it had been acknowledged.
Albus let out a shocked gasp as he read the top of the page.
‘Hadrian James Potter’
31st July 1980 – Viperidae
With a sweep of his hand, his tea cup and saucer tumbled to the ground, shattering and the remaining tea pooling in the crevices of the old wood floor.
Collapsing back into his chair, Albus brought his hands up to his face, covering the look of defeat that contorted his features. Fawkes let out a trill and flew onto his masters desk, Fawkes began letting out a soft song to comfort the weary man.
“What shall we do, Fawkes?” Albus mumbled as he dropped his hands into his lap, the bird quieting as his master began to speak. “All this time, nether of his parents were creatures, but he is. If only I hadn’t been weak from that damnable curse when his parents were eliminated, then I could have made sure he didn’t go with that scoundrel Black. What do we do now? How could the boy I was going to use to finish off those disgusting creatures, be a creature?”
Dumbledore stood up and began to pace along the front of his desk, his energy increasing due to his shock and anger over this new development and from his morning potions finally making their way throughout his bloodstream to do their jobs.
Fawkes watched his master for several minutes, letting out soft trills of encouragement from time to time as the old man pondered what to do.
The Phoenix was mid trill when Dumbledore stopped suddenly and moved quickly to one of the bookshelves behind his desk. Pulling an old, thin book out, Albus flipped through the worn pages and, after adjusting his glasses at the bridge of his nose, stood for a moment reading.
“This is it, Fawkes! I know what to do!” Albus said suddenly, nearly making the bird jump, Fawkes watched as Dumbledore put the small book back on the shelf and then turn to face his longtime companion. “Viperidae still in school will finish their schooling before going to the Viperidae homeland to find a mate. So, we must turn Mr. Potter to the Light this year, before he is mated and gone from us for good. Just think, Fawkes, how glorious it will be! Not only will Harry be the boy who lost his parents to a creature and then overcame the same horrid creatures to rid us of them once and for all, but he will also be the boy who overcame his own sickening magical flaw to end his own personal creature torment. It will legendary, my dear friend.”
Content that he had come up with a plan that still got him to his end goal, Albus put the Tome away and released the spell to let the portraits back into the room and sat down to begin his day as Headmaster at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
However, just as he had that fateful night almost sixteen years ago, Albus, too blinded by his hatred, was missing a piece of the puzzle and it would once again change his plans, or possibly, destroy them.
A/N I am very sorry for taking so long to update this story. In all honesty, I haven’t worked on it in quite some time. I got a promotion at work shortly after I first started this story and it has sucked the life right out of me. But, I really need to get some creativity back into my life, so I have returned to finish this! My goal is two updates a month, please note that if a major US holiday is approaching that new chapters will be late due to my job or I will have less updates that month. I do have the story overview complete which will help me get chapters out faster. Thank you to everyone who has reviewed and I hope you like this new chapter, if you are still around and reading it.
