Chapter 1: Help or Harm
Scabior stalked through the forest, silently daring any of his men to piss him off, just so he'd have an excuse to lay into them, needing to vent some of his pent up rage. His crew however had long become aware of when their boss was in a black mood and took extra care to steer clear of him. Scabior was left to silently fume about the botched attempt they'd made tonight to infiltrate one of the safe houses of the Order. They had known the snatchers were coming, which could only mean one of two things. Either his men had not been as subtle in their observation of the place as he'd hoped or he had a mole on his crew. Looking around at his men he knew that their combined intelligence wasn't that great so the former was probably the issue. He cursed his luck under his breath about finding himself surrounded by incompetence. Just as he was about to blast a bush apart with his wand for looking too leafy he heard a cry from his men ahead.
“Oi, Scabior! You gotta come an' see this!”
Grumbling to himself about being delayed from falling into his bed back at camp he changed direction and headed towards the clearing the call had come from. He saw his men standing close together looking at something on the ground.
“This better be bloody worth it, Xander.” He growled.
As he entered the clearing his men shuffled out of the way and that's when he saw her. Freezing mid step his keen eyes quickly took in everything. A girl was lying, unconscious, on the ground, she appeared to be about 17 or 18, it was hard to tell since blood and bruises riddled the skin that was exposed marring her features. Dried blood was caked to the side of her face, mixing with her hair so that he couldn't tell if it was blonde or light brown. The clothes she had on were muddy and ripped in places, particularly her shirt, and her left shoe was missing. But all of this didn't phase Scabior as much as what was around the girl. Surrounding her body was what appeared to be an energy field. A dark shadowy aura filled with glowing red sparks hugged her small frame. And crouched over her reaching towards it to get to the girl was one of his men.
“DON'T BLOODY TOUCH HER!” He yelled at the man as he quickly resumed walking towards the group. He didn't know what that energy field was but it couldn't be a good thing.
The snatcher reaching for the girl looked up briefly, “Bu' Boss, she's lyin' right 'ere. It'll be our easiest catch yet!” He stated excitedly, continuing to reach towards her.
“Ben! I said DON'T!” He scowled, drawing his wand.
Just as Ben's fingers brushed through the sparkling shadow a bright light exploded in the clearing with a boom that made all the men stumble backwards. Recovering from the light Scabior saw that Ben was no longer crouched over the girl. Glancing around he found him lying on the opposite side of the clearing, sprawled on the ground, not moving. One of the men overcame the shock and rushed to Ben's side. He looked up at Scabior, “He's alive... Just been knocked ou'.”
Grateful for that Scabior turned back to the girl. No one else made any attempt to touch her, this time waiting for their boss' instructions. Scabior crouched over the girl, studying her face and the injuries that covered her body. Wondering what happened to her to land her in this beat up state. He noticed that she was actually quite pretty underneath the swelling, the bruising and the blood. He quickly took note of the injuries he could see. There was a wound on her forehead, the source of all the blood that was crusted on her face and in her hair. An ugly purple bruise flamed on her right cheek and her bottom lip was split. Continuing his appraisal Scabior noted that her wrists had large bruises on them, as if she'd been restrained somehow, and what skin he could see of her abdomen was swollen and bruised a deep blackish purple. Shit sweetheart, someone really did a number on you, he thought as he ran a hand through his hair.
“Wha' are we gonna do with 'er boss?”
Standing up Scabior looked at his men, who all looked back at him with questions in their eyes. “I don' know. We obviously can't touch her.”
“Bu' if'n we don' get to 'er, those injuries'll kill 'er” a snatcher named Thom stated.
Scabior knew Thom was right and Thom was the best at healing spells in their crew. Even with his own limited knowledge of healing Scabior knew that she'd stand no chance if they just left her. A dead girl was worth no money at the ministry, even if she wasn't an important player in the war and Scabior didn't know why, but he felt that this girl was important, somehow, to the conflict. He didn't know as yet which side she was on, but the feeling that she was a key player was a strong one and he had learned at an early age to trust his intuition. It's what had gotten him this far. If she was important to the Dark Lord's side he'd be rewarded handsomely for saving her, but if she were important to Harry Potter's side he'd be rewarded for saving her and turning her in for information. It was a win win really, all he needed to do was figure out how to get to her.
Crouching down again he started studying the barrier, he thought after Thom's comment about her injuries that it looked smaller. Testing a theory he replied to Thom, “I know, but we can't help her if we can't touch her.” Sure, enough the barrier started to shrink. He reached out his fingers tentatively and brushed them along the edges of the remaining force field. Where his fingers made contact he felt a warm tingling sensation as if the barrier held a slight static charge.
Unfortunately, upon seeing his fingers pass the edges of the barrier, without being thrown across the clearing like Ben, one of his men to let out a whoop of truimph, “Yeah, get 'er Boss!”
The barrier reacted instantly, springing back to it's original size and sending a shock up Scabior's arm that left his muscles throbbing as he quickly retracted his hand. Cursing he stood to face the snatcher that had spoken. In a deadly calm voice he said, “That was not the best thing to have said right now, Ty.”
“Sorry, Boss," he mumbled looking at his feet.
“Alright, get back to camp, all of you. Thom you're in charge, make sure these idiots get supper going. Blaine, help Xander get Ben back to camp.”
“Wha' are you gonna do Boss?” asked Thom.
Glancing down at the girl and her force field again Scabior muttered, “I'm gonna try and figure out how to get through this thing.”
“You 'eard 'im boys, back ta camp!” Thom yelled. Smirking as the snatcher's bustled into action he turned to Scabior and added in a much quieter voice, “Be careful, eh? I ain't never seen a field like tha' aroun' someone afore. And Merlin knows these men need ya to keep 'em in line.”
Scabior half smiled, in the year that he had known Thom he could honestly say he was the closest thing to a friend he had ever had. Nodding Scabior agreed, “I will, Thom. I think I know how to get in, but if I'm not back at camp in an hour come find me. I don't relish the idea of lying here unconscious when who knows what or who might stumble along and find me.”
“Sure thing, Scabior. See ya back at camp then,” Thom said as he walked after the rest of the group.
“Alright, luv, it's just you an' me now.” Crouching down again he studied the barrier. It was still sparking brightly, not having lessened any since it regrew after Ty's outburst. Running his palm just above the edge of the shadow Scabior felt heat rising from it. “Well, at least you're not cold in there,” he chuckled dryly, “unlike some of us out here.”
Taking a risk he let his hand settle closer to the barrier, exhaling sharply when a red spark jolted to his palm causing him to snatch his hand away. “Damn, sweetheart! I'm only tryin' to help you!”
The barrier gave a small ripple and shrank slightly at his words. So his previous theory had been correct. The barrier seemed to know when someone was trying to catch her versus help her. He just had to be convincing enough to get to her and heal her. He'd worry about figuring out who she was and what sort of price she was worth later. Reaching out again he hovered his hand above the barrier, it was still warm though not as much and there were less red sparks floating in the shadow. Gingerly pressing his fingers forwards he swore as another spark connected with them, sending a searing pain briefly through his arm.
“Merlin that smarts!” he growled pulling his fingers back again. Loosing patience he ran his hand across his face, looking down at the form below him. Seeing the sparks beginning to accumulate where he had been continually trying to get through the barrier, he spoke to the girl in a low hiss, “Listen, luv. The way I see it you 'ave two choices. Either you let me get through this confounded barrier and let me help you or you stay here and die.”
With surprise he watched as the sparks dissipated through the shadow and started to sink into the girls body, pulling the shadow inwards as they went. Slowly, slowly, the barrier retreated until it was completely gone.
“See, that wasn't so bad?” he sighed.
Placing a hand lightly on her forehead he realized she was burning up. Whether from fever or the heat the barrier had been giving off he couldn't tell. But he knew he needed to get her back to camp and Thom's healing skills quickly. He realized it would be worth seeing if she'd wake up before going to camp. There might be less chance of the barrier returning if she woke up out here with just him rather than in camp with six strange men. Gently shaking her shoulders he said, “Come on, sweetheart, time to wake up.”
He hadn't really been expecting a respond so was shocked when he heard her let out a small groan and saw her eyelids start to flutter. Drawing his hands back quickly he watched as she struggled to pull herself out of unconsciousness. When her eyes finally did open, they locked onto his own, almost in panic and he had to catch his breath. The girl was staring at him, fear laced through the bluest eyes he had ever seen, complete with a unique thin gold ring wrapped around the pupil.
