A/N: Starr - thank you so much for the review. Posting was one of the more difficult decisions I made. I was a very much afraid of putting it out there for the world to see. So thank you again!
We entered the bar of the hotel and found a table off to the side. The lighting was dim and cast shadows into the corner. Music from the 1940s played softly in the background while various sized groups, mostly made up of tourists, talked, laughed and drank.
“What would you like to drink?” I looked up and saw a cute waitress at our table. Her long blond hair pulled up into a high ponytail. She smiled at us but her eyes lingered on Charlie. Why in the world did that annoy me?! I am losing my mind!
“I think we’ll need another minute.” Charlie said to the waitress who said she’d be back in a few minutes. He looked at me, “So, what type of drink are you going to thank me with?”
“Uh, we’re in England. Tea. Is there any other drink?”
He laughed again and I smiled. “Anything you want. I really do appreciate that you got me back safely and didn’t try to attack me.”
He raised an eyebrow and gave me that crooked grin again. “Well, the night is still young.” If he didn’t stop making me blush the blood flow was going to be seriously restricted from the rest of my body.
He gestured for the waitress, she returned with her swinging blond hair and friendly smile. “A half of bitter please, and…. “ he looked at me.
“I’d like a sweet red wine please?” She wrote down the order and turned away.
Charlie leaned back in his chair with his long legs, stretched out in front of him, crossed at the ankle and his arms folded across his chest. I took a moment to really look at him. He was wearing black boots that I knew were made from some type of lizard skin but I had no clue as to what animal gave its life for them, jeans that were faded and looked soft from wear, a belt of the same lizard as the boots, and a dark green tee-shirt that hugged his very well muscled everything. I could just see the hint of a tattoo at the base of his neck on the left side. He looked at me and smiled. I smiled back.
“Excuse me, I’m going to go to the restroom. I’ll be right back.” I said as I stood.
He stood with me. I looked at him, eye brows lowered in confusion. “I’m not coming with you.” he said with a laugh. “ Just using my manners.”
“Sorry.” I mumbled “I’ll be right back.
I entered the restroom and did what I needed to do. As I went to the sink I caught a peek of myself in the mirror. OH SWEET BABY JESUS! Not once did I think about what I looked like. I don’t normally. I’m not one to do my hair or put on make-up, but HOLY HELL! My dark hair had been in a messy bun at the back of my head. It was still there, just not the same. The fine hairs around my face and the back of my neck had curled into an insane fuzzy halo from the heat and my sweating as I walked around all day. My face was greasy as well and my blue eyes, slightly blood shot from dealing with jet lag, looked back at me from behind my glasses. Was my deodorant still working? I checked the restroom, not seeing anyone, took a quick sniff. Ick, not enough to kill a buffalo but defiantly not fresh. He probably thought he was helping an escaped mental patient. I ran the hot water and washed my hands and then splashed water on my face and scrubbed with a paper towel. I took my hair down and added some water, to try to get the halo under control, and put my hair back up. I then finished up with a quick swipe under my arms and a quick prayer to any god that would listen.
When I returned to the table our drinks were there and along with a bowl of pretzel sticks. Charlie was still stretched out in his chair and looking around at the others. He stood when he saw me approach and I grinned at his manners. This was not something that I saw back home. I sat down and took a sip of my wine.
“So, tell me something about yourself Gina. All I know is that you are an American, you’re prone to getting lost, like fuzzy hats and tall structures.”
I gave him a ‘You’re an idiot’ look and he laughed. “Seriously, tell me something.”
“I don’t know, I’m boring. I live in Ohio and I’m a teacher.”
“What do you teach?”
“Children.” It was my turn to receive a ‘you’re an idiot’ look.
“Do you like games?” he asked.
I raised an eye brow at him and gave him a skeptical look. “I’m still not sold on you being a prince and not a serial killer. We are here in this public place so that people can say they saw me with you when I turn up missing.”
He laughed that deep rumbly laugh again.
“Twenty questions.” As he talked he laid a napkin in front of me and put 10 pretzel sticks on it and then did the same for himself. “We take turns asking questions of each other but we both have to answer the questions you take a pretzel away after you’ve asked a question. I’ll start. How old are you? I’m 29.”
“26. Ok, um… What do you do for a living? I teach 2nd graders and I’ve been doing it for 4 years. I love the job and the kids but it can be stressful at times.”
He paused for a minute and bit his lower lip. I got a little nervous. He was hesitating; please don’t be a drug dealer!
“I work with wild animals. Kind of a rescue. I’ve been at my job for 10 years. Started right after school.” Not a drug dealer. Thank you! “Tell me about your family.”
I let out a wry laugh. “Not much to tell. I am an only child of an only child. My mom passed away 5 years ago and I never knew my dad. My grandparents have been gone since I was a child. I do have a cat though. Her name is Snowball.”
His eyebrows knit together and I could tell he felt bad about asking the question. “I’m so sorry.”
“Don’t be. You didn’t know. You weren’t trying to be cruel. It’s ok honestly. But now you have to answer the question.” I took a sip of my wine while he took a sip of his drink.
“I’d really rather not.” He sounded a little embarrassed.
“NO WAY! This is your game. Answer. It’s ok. I promise.”
“Well, I am the second of 7 kids.” I almost choked on my drink.
“Wow, that’s a family. Tell me about them.”
“Well, there’s mum and dad. Dad works for the government along with Percy, he’s number 3. Percy is married to his school sweet heart. My brother Bill, I was with him when I came to your rescue…” I rolled my eyes and he chuckled. “He works for a bank and is married to a French woman. I have twin brothers Fred and George. Fred was killed five years ago and George still runs the shop they started together.”
I whispered an ‘I’m sorry’ and he gave me a sad smile.
“The twins are children four and five. Ron is number 6 and he works in law enforcement and married one of his best friends and she also works for the government. The baby is Ginny. Poor thing, no hope for her really. She was the only girl with all of us boys. But she can hold her own. She is currently playing on a sports team. Mum stayed home and took care of all of us. They still live where I grew up, out in the country.”
“Christmas must be crazy at your house.”
“Tuesday is crazy at our house. It’s pretty quiet now since everyone is grown and out, but we try to get together once a month for a family dinner. Have one coming up on Thursday as a matter of fact. Ok, your turn. What is the next question?”
“Other than rescuing tourists, what do you do for fun?” I ate my second pretzel.
“Hmmm… I like to fly, read, hang out with my friends.” He took a drink.
“You fly? That is so cool. So like single engine planes?” His eyes popped open in shock and he choked on his drink. He put it down and started coughing violently. “Are you ok?” His eyes were watering and he was holding his chest. I jumped out of my seat so I could kneel beside him. “Are you ok?” I asked more earnestly. He nodded yes and the coughing started to lessen. I went back to my seat but didn’t take my eyes off of him. He finally took a deep breath and wiped the tears from his eyes.
“Are you ok? You looked like something scared you. Are you hurt?”
“I’m fine, sorry. I just swallowed wrong. “His voice was a little raspy. Um… yeah, single engine planes. I just started.” He looked away when he said this and took another sip. I decided not to press it. “What about you, what do you do for fun? Other than travel across oceans to look at fuzzy hats?”
“Seriously, you can drop the fuzzy hat comments.”
“Not likely.” He smirked over the rim of his mug.
“I am typically a home body. I love to read, hang out with Snowball, watch movies. I’ll go out with my friends but I don’t like loud places too much. I also like to do crafts. “
“Boyfriend? Husband? Girlfriend?” He asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Yes.” I replied taking another drink.
Charlie looked shocked for a moment, until he noticed my grin and he let out the loudest laugh I’d heard from him yet. It made me laugh too.
“You just got a lot more intriguing. Do they all know about each other?” he asked with a wink.
“Obviously, I’m lying. I have none of those but if I did it would be a boyfriend or husband. One of my best friends, Lynn, has a very lovely girlfriend. But at this time there is no one for me. And what about you?”
“No, just me and my mates. We share a house and work together.”
The waitress came back by and asked if we needed anything else. I smiled, shook my head and said thank you. Charlie also declined another drink. I didn’t really want the evening to end. I was enjoying this, but the truth was that I was exhausted. If nothing else, this will make a great story to share with my friends and maybe a few fantasies for me. He really is very attractive. I looked down and smiled to myself. No need for him to know I may possibly be having impure thoughts about him later on. I paid the tab and turned back to Charlie.
“Well, we only made it through 5 questions.” I smiled at him and he smiled back. “Thanks again Charlie. It was very nice of you to walk me back. I enjoyed this too. “I gestured to our table.
“I did too. Seriously though, I had no intentions when I offered to walk you back. I just wanted to make sure that you got back safely. Mum really did teach us to help others.”
I stood and extended my hand. Charlie was reclined again with his hands in his front pockets. He looked at my hand for so long I became uncomfortable and withdrew it. He looked up at me.
“If I shake your hand, is that good bye?”
“Ahh, yes?”
“Good bye for the night or good bye for good?”
I bit my lower lip and looked around me, not sure what to say or what was going on. I slowly sat back down.
“I assumed it was just good bye. I really do appreciate you walking me…” He waved a hand at me to get me to stop talking. I stopped and sat there, very uncomfortable.
“I realize you are here on holiday and that you have plans to see fuzzy hats…” “Oh my god! Enough with the fuzzy hats!” I replied in exasperation. He grinned and continued. “but I was wondering if you might be willing to meet up with me again, before you return home. I’d like to take you out for a proper dinner.”
“What?” I was seriously confused. “Why?”
He looked at me with a grin and a twinkle in his eye. “You intrigue me and I had a very enjoyable time this evening. And as I sit here thinking about it, I find myself wanting to see you again.”
I stared at him as if he’d sprouted another head. Seriously, what was this? This guy is hot and had old school manners, why in the world would he want to see me again. “You do realize you don’t need to do that right? If this is some kind of honor thing your mom taught you, I promise, it’s ok. “
“This has nothing to do with my mother, thank you. Gina, would you please allow me to take you to dinner tomorrow evening? It will be within walking distance of your hotel so you don’t need to get into a cab with me. I’ll be a perfect gentleman.”
I was still looking at him in confusion. “I don’t have anything to wear to dinner. Besides, I’m sure you have something better to do.”
He leaned forward and dropped his voice. “Gina, I have no ulterior motives or directives. I would like to see you again, plain and simple. I haven’t met anyone with your independence, wit, and courage in a very long time. I was serious when I said you intrigue me. I know you are only here for a short while, how long exactly?”
“I flew in yesterday and I leave next Sunday. I have today through Saturday to complete my’ to do’ list of things I want to do while I’m here.”
“Well, would you be able to pencil in ‘Have dinner with a well mannered ginger’? Preferably above the fuzzy hats.” I let out an exasperated grunt and he laughed. “Please.”
I looked at him, still very confused. “Sure, yeah.”
He stood now and extended his hand. I took it and he gave my hand a gentle squeeze. I could feel the rough calluses on his palm and fingers. It sent a slight tingle down my spine. “Until tomorrow. I’ll be here at 7:00.” He gave me that crooked grin again and kissed the back of my hand, sending a second shiver down my spine. He walked me to the lobby.
“Good night Gina.”
“Good night Charlie.”
I headed to the stairs to head up to my 3rd floor room. I looked back at him one more time before I headed up the next flight and would lose sight of him. He raised a hand and I responded with a smile. I headed up the stairs with a grin that hurt my cheeks and I tried not to giggle like a loon until I was safely in my room.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Charlie’s POV
I watched her walk up the stairs and smile at me before she turned the corner, glad that she didn’t see the grin I wore. I have no idea what made me run after her and offer to walk her back. I knew I must have sounded mad to her. Then she offered to buy me a drink to thank me, I could barely control the smile that threatened to split my face. She has the most beautiful blue eyes. She seemed so real and down to earth. I was so tired of girls that shopped all the time or were always fussing with their hair and clothes or the ones that were too stuck up to be seen with a guy with scars. I grinned as I thought of her returning to the table with water in her hair and her cheeks pink from what looked like scrubbing.
I walked out of the hotel and down the street, reliving the evening. She made me laugh so many times. Though I nearly blew it when I told her I enjoyed flying. I had let my guard down when talking to her, I felt so relaxed I had forgotten she was a muggle. Then I nearly choked to death. I rolled my eyes at myself for that very manly display. But Gina was nothing but concerned and she gave me an out bringing up single engine planes. I guess I better find out what those are. I’ve never asked a muggle out. It can’t be that different from dating a witch, can it? I just need to watch what I say. That will be the tough part.
My concern now was that if it was upsetting to me to think I wouldn’t see her again after this one encounter, how will I feel after a second? She is only here for a week. This may not be smart. I guess I’ll worry about that later. I turned the corner into a darkened alley, stopped and looked around. Seeing that I was alone I thought of my destination, the Burrow – home, and I turned on the spot and disappeared.
