Chapter 2Hermione was fuming. Not only had Malfoy remembered her robes when she hadn't, he had been basically useless at the meeting. She'd tried to ignore the way he smirked at her efforts to maintain order while explaining the prefects duties to them. The only time he'd actually offered any assistance was when he'd told them to shut up or he'd hex the lot of them. That was not the way to go about earning their respect and it irked her that it had worked and they'd all fallen silent, finally paying attention. She was currently marching along the platform, herding the first years towards Hagrid. Malfoy was, once again, now where to be found. When he showed up he was going to get a piece of her mind. She would not assume all the Head's responsibilities this year.“A'right, Hermione?” Hagrid asked. She looked up into his concerned hairy face, “Yes, just a little frustrated. The Head Boy isn't being overly helpful.”“Ah, I'm sure he'll come around. 'Specially with your guidance. Who got named Head Boy anyway?” he asked, ushering the first years together.“Malfoy,” she groused. That had Hagrid looking up in shock, “Draco Malfoy? He's back too?”Hermione sighed, “Yes, and it doesn't appear he's going to act any different towards me. He has also already been neglecting his duties-”“I don' know about that,” Hagrid interrupted her, pointing down the platform. She spun around, searching the throng of bodies that were scrambling to get off the train and find a carriage. His tall form and blonde hair was easy to spot. He was making his way threw the crowd, followed by a small group of first years. One little girl, who looked very scared, was actually clinging to his hand. That caused Hermione's mouth to fall open. Not only was the girl clutching his hand hard enough to make it fall off, he was letting her.“Here you go, Hagrid,” he said upon reaching them. “That's the last of the first years.”Hagrid spoke, only sounding a little miffed, “Thank you, Malfoy. Okay, first years, follow me.”The little girl was still clinging to Draco's hand. She was staring at Hagrid, her blue eyes huge in the dim light. Hermione took a step towards her, to reassure her, but Malfoy held up his free hand.“I got this,” he said simply, crouching down to the girl's eye level. “Maya,” the girl turned her eyes to him, “this is Hagrid. He's in charge of getting the first years safely to the castle. Look how big he is, nothing could possible hurt you while he's around.”It shocked Hermione that he was clever enough to turn the girls fear around on her. Clearly, Hagrid's size had intimidated her, but now she was looking up at him again, as if contemplating how scary she should actually find him. Hagrid gave her a bright smile.“I know you're nervous, I was too my first year. But there's nothing to be nervous about, you're going to learn so much here,” Draco said.Maya started to look a little calmer. Hermione could only stand there, watching the scene unfold in front of her. Who was this version of Malfoy? This was a side of him she had never seen before. She didn't even know he was capable of being this kind.“Tell you what,” Draco continued, “you go up to the castle with Hagrid and if you get sorted into Slytherin you can sit beside me, okay?”A small smile tugged at the corners of Maya's mouth and she nodded. Turning to Hagrid she took a large breath and joined the other students milling about around him.Hermione looked at Hagrid. She was glad to see she wasn't the only one that that had surprised. Hagrid shook his great beard and turned back to the children. “A'right, this way. We gotta head down to the water to find the boats. See you at the castle, Hermione. Malfoy,” he nodded in their direction. She watched as they all trundled after Hagrid, around a bend in the road and out of sight. Turning to Malfoy she tried to think of something to say about what had just occurred. “Malfoy-”He spared her an almost bored glance, sticking his hands in his pockets as he began sauntering back along the platform. “We're going to be late again, Granger, if you keep standing there with your mouth open. Bit of a nasty habit you have.” He paused and looked back, adding suggestively, “Or are you waiting for something to fill it?”Her fury came flooding back, “You are disgusting!” She stomped towards him, “I was going to say that was nice, what you did for Maya, but clearly you are still an arrogant ass!”He smirked, “Was going to? Granger, you did just say that.”“You know what I meant.”She walked past him, heading to the carriages. They were the last ones on the platform and there was only one carriage left. Hermione groaned. Was there no getting away from him? She couldn't wait to get to the castle. Once there, she wouldn't have to see him except when classes or Head duties demanded it. She could eat in peace. She could sit with her friends. She hoped she'd get to stay with Ginny in her dormitory. Usually Head's stayed in their year's dormitory, but because she was returning for an extra year she didn't know what the sleeping arrangement would be.She climbed into the carriage, feeling it dip slightly as Draco climbed in after her. She stared straight ahead. The carriage started to move. It wound it's way through the trees and started to climb the hill that would lead them to Hogwarts. After a while, Malfoy spoke, “You can't ignore me forever, Granger.”She grit her teeth, “Except for when we need to perform Head duties I can. Once we're at the castle we can go our separate ways. I'll go to Gryffindor and you can crawl back to Slytherin. Just stay out of my way, Malfoy. I have no desire to spend any more time with you than is necessary.”He chuckled and she turned to him, surprised. He had an amused expression on his face, his feet once again propped up in front of him, this time on the opposite bench.“Oh, trust me the feeling is mutual. But I sense you and I are going to be spending quite a bit of time together.”“Think what you like, Malfoy.”“I mean, I could leave all the planning and duties to you. If you don't want me around...” he drawled.Hermione scowled, “I swear, if you don't pull your weight I will hex you so hard.”He sat forward suddenly, leaning towards her, “That's something you would like, isn't it? To hex me hard?”Hermione furrowed her brow, confused, “What?”He raised his eyebrows, and when he spoke his voice was much lower. “I can think of much more pleasurable ways to get me hard. Hexing seems a bit drastic.”Hermione gasped audibly. Did he just- No... he didn't just flirt with her, did he? Flustered, all she could do was sputter for a moment, which obviously amused him. He leaned back again, a satisfied smirk on his face. When she found her voice she hissed out a reply, “That is just-.... That is not what I meant! I would never-... That is the last thing I would ever want to do to you.”The bastard chuckled again, “Keep telling yourself that, Granger, if it helps you sleep at night.”She glowered, “I will. That is never going to happen.”She turned and stared straight ahead again, willing the carriage to travel faster.---**---“Miss Granger, Mister Malfoy, a moment please.”They had just entered the castle when Professor McGonagall approached them.Hermione smiled at the new Headmistress, who nodded in greeting.“Welcome back. I'm pleased the two of you have chosen to complete your education. There are a few things I would like to discuss with you after the feast. There are some changes you need to be made aware of. When dinner is complete would you both please meet me at the head table?”“Of course, Professor.”Draco almost rolled his eyes at Granger's enthusiasm. He hoped they were minor changes that wouldn't affect him that much. He was already going to have his hands full with Head duties and classes, not to mention his NEWTs and his own personal goal of winning the affections of the Gryffindor princess.“Thank you. In you go then, I'll see you after dinner.”Draco walked into the Great Hall, it looked much better than the last time he'd been there. He'd noted as they'd approached the castle that parts of it still appeared to be in disrepair. Not that he was overly surprised, it had taken quite the beating during the final battle. It would take more than a few months to return it to it's former glory. He glanced around, at least the parts that were used frequently seemed to have been repaired to a safe condition. He stood in the door way for a moment longer, watching Hermione rush over to her friends at the Gryffindor table. He looked over to the Slytherin table. He knew people there, but he'd never really had any friends in the younger years. Oh well, it's not like he needed friends to get through the year. He would have enough fun bothering Granger anyway. He smiled. She was going to be a challenge, their animosity ran so deep that it would be tough to unravel it, but he was confident he could. He sat down at the end of the table, greeting the people who bothered to look up as he did so. A few of the younger girls smiled at him and started whispering quickly to each other. Draco rolled his eyes, if he struck out with Granger at least he would have some way of venting his frustrations. Some of the girls were rather pretty and from the snippets he was catching of their conversation, they would be more than willing to fool around. The sorting hat was brought out and placed on it's customary stool. Silence fell on the crowd of students. The doors opened and the first years made there way to the front of the hall, lead by Hagrid. He caught sight of Maya's black hair and bright blue eyes, searching the tables. He'd been a little perturbed when she'd grasped his hand at the train station, but had quickly realized that being nice to her would be a good way of subtly making it into Granger's good books. Maya's eyes finally found him and he gave her a quick smile, which she returned with a bright one. She must not be feeling so scared now.All eyes were now on the sorting hat as it started to twitch. It straightened itself up and began to sing.Welcome students, new and old,I'm glad our story's still being told.
The founder's four left me a job,
To judge and sort this unruly mob.
Before I do, let's take a peek,At the houses that you seek.
Which one, you say, will take you in?
That depends on what's under your skin.
Brave and daring Gryffindor,Like hero's out of ancient lore.
If you find yourself sorted here,
Friends, you'll find, are always near.
Ravenclaw's are quick and bright,They prize fine minds and hold them tight.
Studious ones here shall go,
To find what they all seek to know.
Loyal and caring Hufflepuff,Takes them all, there's never enough.
Friendships formed in this fine place,
Are one's that hold a tight embrace.
Slytherin, the cunning one,Is often passed from man to son.
If this is where you find your home,
Ambitious friends, with you, shall roam.
On that note I must impress,To your house, you must not obsess.
These walls have seen far better days,
It's up to us to ensure it stays.
Look around you at the chaos,Working together holds major payoffs.
There are some rooms who have struck a deal,
In order to remain, we must find a way to heal.
Rebuild this castle, help it grow,Let your heart truly show.
If enemies can forget their pasts,
Then maybe, we'll find peace that lasts.
So try to keep an open mind,You never know what you will find.
Perhaps your future will come a courting,
Now, it's time, on with the sorting!
The hat fell silent and Professor Sprout began reading names off the list of first years.Draco saw Hermione sit up straighter when 'Simmons, Maya' was called. Good, his kindness to the girl had obviously peaked her interest. He just had to continue being friendly to the little girl and he'd have Granger's attention.“Slytherin!” the hat shouted.Draco couldn't help grinning, that would make it easy. Maya all but flew down the aisle, beaming at him. She plopped down beside him and he caught Granger's eye as he gave the girl a quick one armed hug in congratulations.Hermione turned her attention back to the sorting and Ginny, who had asked her a question.Once the sorting was over and the food appeared, Draco found himself answering all of Maya's questions between bites. Merlin, she had a lot! Strangely, he found he didn't mind. Maybe it was the fact that she seemed so little. Maybe it was because she was the only one who had really talked to him since his return to school. Maybe it was the looks Granger kept throwing his way as he patiently explained everything she wanted to know. After the feast, he handed Maya off to the Slytherin prefect and headed to the head table. Hermione was making her way there as well. They met in the middle of the hall and stared at each other briefly before turning to Professor McGonagall as she approached.“Thank you for staying. I have a few things I wish to discuss with you. Now, as you know, the castle has not been fully restored. The teachers have all agreed, and each volunteered one of their planning sessions, to create an extra- mandatory- class for students year five and above.”“A new class, Professor?” Hermione asked eagerly.“Yes, Miss Granger. The castle needs to be repaired and it's too big a job for just the professors, so we've decided to allow the students to help. Supervised of course, hence the creation of the new class. It will be a period in which the students will learn the enchantments used to help build and protect Hogwarts and once the professor deems they are ready, they will be able to assist in reconstructing certain rooms.”Draco admitted to himself that that actually sounded like an interesting thing to learn.“Oh, that's such a brilliant idea!”He rolled his eyes, of course Granger would love the idea. It involved learning something new.“I'm glad you agree, I've requested that you both attend every class to assist the professors. Think of it as being an assistant.”“Of course, that sounds fun. Doesn't it, Malfoy?” Hermione said, suddenly turning to him.He returned her fierce stare with a calm one of his own, “Yeah, that actually does sound pretty neat. I'd be delighted to help.”Her eyes narrowed at him.“Was there anything else, Professor?” he asked. “You said you had a few things to discuss with us.”“Yes, two more things. The first one relates to the new class. We have taken an inventory of all the rooms that are in need of repair and we can't seem to locate the Room of Requirements. The entire staff has been searching for months. We know it will need some attention since it must have been damaged fairly extensively by the fire, but it has yet to appear. If either of you two locate if or hear of a student who has found it, please inform me immediately.”Hermione nodded, “Of course, Professor.”“Good. Now, the last thing I wish to discuss with you is your sleeping arrangements.”Hermione looked confused, “Our sleeping arrangements? Don't the Head's usually sleep in their house dormitories?”Draco had been wondering the same thing. He peered at McGonagall, wondering where she was going with this.“Normally, yes, that is the case. However, usually the Head's are from their seventh year and already have a bed in one of the dormitories. Since you are both returning for an eighth year, your previous dormitories have been reallocated to the new first years.”Draco watched Hermione's face fall. She must have been expecting for things to remain the same as before the war. He scoffed. He could have told her things would be different. However, that didn't stop his own confusion as to what the Headmistress was getting at.“So, if there's no place for us in our houses, where are we going to be living?” he enquired.“The staff have created a separate dormitory for the Heads to share-”“WHAT?” Hermione interrupted.“Miss Granger, I would appreciate it if you would let me continue.”“Sorry, Professor,” she mumbled.Draco couldn't help but smile. This just kept getting better and better. He'd been concerned about how much time he would have with Granger to work on his plan. But this- This ensured he had almost unlimited access to her.“Now, as I was saying. There is now a Heads dormitory. It has an individual room for each of you and a shared common room and bathroom. It is located behind the painting of the waterfowl pond, with the couple in a row boat. It can be found beside the library, you will probably enjoy that Miss Granger.”Hermione nodded meekly.“The password is petrichor. I would suggest you both go get settled, classes start tomorrow and you also have your duties as Heads to plan. Off you go.”Draco spun and walked to the giant doors, where he waited for Hermione to catch up. He fell in step with her as they headed to the third floor.“So, it seems we'll be spending more time together than you thought, eh Granger?” he mocked.“Eat shit, Malfoy.”He smiled as he watched her storm up the stairs. Oh yes, this was going to be fun. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
