Albus had been elated to receive his owl. He had contacted Potter’s Healer at St. Mungo’s to inform her of the decision. She had asked to speak to both of them first. That afternoon found the two wizards sitting in a small office. Healer Alexia Copperbottom was a short woman, but appeared intimidating with that McGonagall-like look over the small frames perched on her nose.“You should understand, Professors, that Mr. Potter is in a very fragile state. He hasn’t tried anything since he was admitted, but that doesn’t mean he won’t try once he’s released. While he’s been here, I have done a full, in-depth medical scan over Mr. Potter.”The Healer pulled out what appeared to be a very thick folder. It astounded both wizards to see that much paperwork bulging out of a folder. She tapped the top of the folder with a small sigh.“I will admit I was surprised by what my scans revealed. Mr. Potter is on a strict potions regimen right now, but I know that Professor Snape will be able to keep him on it. However, I will leave the decision to my patient.”Severus’ hand tightened into a fist on his lap. He couldn’t fathom why the Healer would leave such an important decision up to a clearly unstable man. However, he chose to remain silent on the matter. The Healer stood up and had the two follow her to Harry’s private room. She had them wait outside while she went in.Harry was sitting up in his bed, quietly nibbling on some fruit. He pushed the bowl away and looked up when the Healer approached.“Good afternoon, Harry. Did you have a good lunch?” Healer Copperbottom asked.Harry shrugged. He hadn’t eaten much, but he wasn’t going to admit to that. Glancing around her, he could see what looked like two shadows standing out in the hall.“Harry, you have a very important choice to make. You have people that are concerned about you; that want to care for you. But I won’t send you with him if you don’t want to go,” Healer Copperbottom explained to him.Harry nodded his head in understanding.“Professor Snape would like to take you in to help you recover. He lives in a quiet area with plenty of room for you to walk around. He can help you stay on your potions and monitor your progress,” Healer Copperbottom told him.Harry blinked slowly. Professor…Snape? They wanted him to go live with Snape? Harry lowered his head to his chin. He supposed he should have seen this coming when Dumbledore had been the only one to visit him. But he didn’t want to be a burden on the man. Not after all he had done.Without picking up his chin, Harry softly shook his head. No. No, he wouldn’t do that to the spy. The man had nearly died trying to help Harry. He wouldn’t let him spend his retirement years watching his sorry ass.“Is that your decision?” Healer Copperbottom asked.Harry nodded. He didn’t see the disappointed look that crossed his Healer’s face. She quietly excused herself before leaving the room. She closed the door partly behind her. Both wizards could already tell by her face what the younger wizard’s decision was.“Did he tell you why?” Albus asked. What the Healer said next shocked them both.“Headmaster, Mr. Pot…Harry hasn’t spoken since he was admitted. There’s nothing wrong physically or magically. He just…won’t speak,” Healer Copperbottom said.Armed with the knowledge of Potter and his self-sacrificing nature, Severus suspected why he had been turned down. He asked politely to speak with the wizard alone. The Healer looked like she was going to object, but stopped herself and nodded instead. Severus slipped into the room quietly.Potter didn’t even look up from where he sat on the bed. Severus walked over to the room and sat down on the side of the bed. Potter kept his head down, but they both knew he knew Severus was there.“Potter, don’t do this. I don’t know what drove you to this or why your closest friends have abandoned you, but I do want to help. I live in a quiet home on the edge of a town with wizards and muggles. My lover is fine with you coming to live with us, as am I.”Harry lifted his head to stare at him. Severus was shocked by the broken look in those bright emerald green eyes. It was a gaze he hated to see. Severus surprised himself by reaching out to grasp Harry’s hand.“Do you really want to spend the rest of your life confined to a hospital with around the clock monitoring?” Severus asked him.Harry shrugged in response. He would be getting that no matter where he went.“Harry.”Harry’s gaze refocused up into a coal black gaze.“I will allow you your freedom. I will keep tabs on you, but I will allow you to go outside, to explore. I won’t trust you near my potions lab.” Smirk. “But that’s nothing you haven’t heard before.”It brought him a secret warmth to his heart when he saw the side of the wizard’s face twitch up in a small smile. Slowly, Harry nodded his head.“Good. I need to speak with your Healer on the potions you are taking and then I will return to retrieve you. Would you like me to send Albus in?”Again, Harry shrugged. It made Severus want to shake him and demand he stop shrugging and use his voice. However, years of experience with abused and neglected Slytherins, had left Severus more sensitive to special cases. He squeezed Harry’s hand before letting go and standing.“I’ll send him in, then.” He glanced at the nearly full bowl of fruit. “Try to eat a little more while I’m gone.”Harry had dropped his head back down and offered no answer in reply. Severus had to resist the urge to pat him on the head. He walked quietly out into the hall.“Potter’s agreed to go. Albus, could you sit with him while I speak with Healer Copperbottom?” Severus asked.Albus patted him on the shoulder.“Of course, Severus. Take your time.”Healer Copperbottom led him back to her office. She shrunk down Harry’s file and handed it over to him. Severus put it in his pocket for safekeeping. He made a mental note to look through the file later.“That has all of his medical information, including a list of the potions he needs to take in the morning. He’s been taking a Calming Draught, but I stopped giving it to him this morning.”He asked a few questions, here and there. Severus made sure he knew everything he needed to know until he could read through the file. Healer Copperbottom cautioned him on a few things.“He doesn’t do much. I’ve been giving him puzzles to work on to occupy his time. Oh, and here is a sample of the potion he brewed.”The sample was small in a glass vial with unbreakable charm placed on it. The potion was a surprisingly shade of glittery blue with small silver specks. It was a potion he could not immediately identify, which worried him greatly. He would have to conduct experiments to figure out what Harry’s purpose had been with his potion. They discussed the brunette wizard for a little longer before going back to the room. Albus was sitting on the end of the bed telling Harry some story or another.“Time to go, Harry,” Severus said, softly.Harry pulled his legs off to the side and stood up. He reached for his bag but Severus had already shrunk it and placed it in his pocket. So his hand fell limp by his side. He surprised the three older adults by turning around to pull a Rubik’s cube out from behind his pillow. He handed the completed puzzle back to the Healer. The Healer stared at it in shock before shifting her gaze back to Harry.“Thank you, Harry. This is…very nice,” Healer Copperbottom praised.Again there was a small twitch and a tiny smile. Severus stared at the cube. He knew just how tricky those could be, but he supposed he shouldn’t be surprised Harry Potter got it. Suddenly, Severus did a mental slap to his forehead.Stop that. Potter is Harry. If you’re going to help him, then you need to start fresh. Or else he’ll be right back here or worse, Severus thought.Severus held out a hand and Harry walked the distance to him.“We are going to side-along. I want you to hold my arm. Firmer than that.”Harry gripped his arm in a tighter grip. Albus stood up from the bed, but made no moves to come any closer. Severus noticed that Harry had taken a tiny step back. He could tell by the elderly wizard’s small smile that he had noticed, too.“Come visit sometime, Severus. You as well, Harry,” Albus said, softly.Harry only nodded his head, but the Potions Master felt he only did it out of respect. Severus bid his farewells and warned Harry before he turned and they apparated. They reappeared in the middle of the upstairs guest room. Harry was pressed uncomfortably close to him with his face buried in the man’s arm.“It’s all right…Harry. We’re here now. Look,” Severus said, gently tugging on the younger wizard’s arm.Harry pulled away slowly with his eyes closed. He opened them slowly before looking around him. It was a nice, modest room with the basic essentials and a room leading into what looked like a spacious bathroom. Severus pulled out Harry’s bag and unshrunk it. He offered it to the young lion who took it and placed it on the end of the bed.“This will be your room. You’re welcome to decorate it as you like. Would you like to unpack or take a tour of the house first?” Severus asked. He was pleased to see that Harry didn’t automatically shrug. He actually seemed to be thinking over the question. When Harry tilted his head towards the door leading out to the hall, Severus knew he had his answer. Severus led him outside in the hall. There were a few rooms upstairs in which Harry was permitted to enter. There was a large library with an extensive collection of books; the master bedroom; Harry’s room; and a room that was similar to the Room of Requirements at Hogwarts. Severus explained the magic in great detail to him, in case he wanted to use that particular room. Severus grabbed his arm to pull him to a stop at the top of the stairs.“I only ask that you not enter my bedroom unless you feel it’s necessary,” Severus told him.Harry nodded. Severus continued the tour downstairs. There was a spacious kitchen, a dining room, living room, and a door leading down to a potions lab.“You are only to go in there if you are invited,” Severus said, a warning tone in his voice.Harry didn’t even bother nodding. He knew he wasn’t allowed down there, as Snape had said something earlier. They were in the living room when a loud commotion came from the kitchen followed by a high-pitched, squeaky voice. Severus rolled his eyes.“Excuse me a moment,” he said, before leaving the room.Harry turned around and looked all around the living room. There was a nice big couch and armchair facing the fireplace. Above the fireplace were a floo powder pot and a large picture frame of what looked like a living aquarium. Over in a corner was a small desk neatly organized with folders and papers. There were a few windows that were letting in a good amount of light.Harry looked at the fireplace again and noticed another, smaller frame sitting on the mantle. He walked over to the fireplace and reached out to pick it up. It was a picture of Snape and Malfoy. Harry recalled Snape mentioning a lover, but he hadn’t thought it would be his old school rival. However, he could clearly see the difference in them in the non-moving photograph. They looked…happy. When he heard Snape coming back, Harry replaced the photograph before turning back around. Unknown to him, Severus had already seen what he was doing.“I suppose you’ve figured out now that Draco is my lover. I hope that won’t be a problem,” Severus said.Harry shook his head. Snape had said earlier that his lover – Malfoy – was okay with him coming here. If Malfoy was okay, then so was he. Snape told him that dinner would be served at six and what he was wearing was fine. He suggested Harry get unpacked and settled in.Harry wandered upstairs with his hand sliding up the banister as he went. He noticed a few portraits on the walls; thankfully, none of them moved like typical wizarding photos. Once upstairs, he disappeared into his room in which he, after a second thought, left the door cracked. He unpacked the few things he had in his bag before sitting on his bed. He pulled out the old album with his photographs in it.If Harry had to survive his suicide attempt, then he was glad the album had been saved from the fire. The first few pages were of his parents in their early and later years and with him as a baby. Then he flipped through his school year photos. His heart started to get heavier and heavier as he flipped slowly towards the back. Finally, he stopped on the last page where there were only three photographs. The first photograph was of Ron and Hermione with their newborn, Daniela. That had been the last time he had seen either one of them. The little girl was probably close to three or four now. The next photograph was of the entire Weasley family; before the war, before the deaths, before they abandoned him. The last photograph was a moving one of him and Ginny. In the photograph he was grimacing while Ginny was smiling. However, if you looked close enough, you would see Ginny’s hands tighten painfully on his arm and her smile turn dark.Harry slammed the book shut and shoved it away. Tears started to flow steadily down his face as he squeezed his eyes shut. He clutched his shirt over his chest before curling up into a ball. Harry laid there for what felt like hours, but when he next looked at a clock, it read 5:40. With a congested sniffle, Harry rolled out of bed to his feet and trudged into the bathroom.Grabbing a washcloth from the bathroom closet, Harry washed his face as best as he could. He hoped Snape wouldn’t notice the light pink tint to his eyes. Now that he didn’t wear glasses anymore, they seemed to pop out more. Leaving the bathroom, Harry snatched up the photo album and hid it carefully. When Harry came downstairs and sat himself at the table, the pink in his eyes didn’t escape Severus’ notice. Despite all his years of caring for his abused and neglected students, he had never cared for one that wasn’t one of his Slytherins. Most of them had been open to speaking with him or lashed out in fear or anger; Harry Potter was neither of those. Dinner was a quiet affair with Harry glancing at the empty chair at the table. Noticing the looks, Severus explained that Draco sometimes got caught up in his work and would eat later.Later in the evening found Severus downstairs at the desk in the living room and Harry upstairs in the library. He was sitting in an armchair thinking to himself when the floo flared and a familiar blonde stepped out. The blonde had changed a bit since their school years. He was a little taller and his hair hung loose instead of gelled down. As if sensing Harry’s gaze, Draco turned around from dusting himself off.Draco smiled when he spotted Harry. He came over and sat down on the coffee table in front of Harry.“Hi, Potter. Settling in okay?” Draco asked.Curled up with his arm around his knees, Harry shrugged. Draco nodded in acceptance.“I know it’s going to be weird for a while, but take it one day at a time. Have you eaten dinner yet?” Draco asked.Harry nodded. Draco asked if he wouldn’t mind if he grabbed a bite to eat. Harry shook his head, showing he didn’t mind. Draco summoned a house elf and asked for a plate of food. Draco must have been hungry, because he ate through it fairly quickly.“Would you like to hear what we’ve been up to? Me and Severus?” Draco asked. He watched Harry think about it for a moment before slowly nodding his head. Draco clapped his hands together and leaned forward with his arms resting on his knees.“Well, as I’m sure you know, after the war, Severus handed in his resignation. I took my N.E.W.T.’s and passed with flying colors. I left Hogwarts and came to live with Severus. We became lovers a little time after that.”Harry learned that Severus still brewed his potions and supplied some to a shop in Diagon Alley. He spent most of his days brewing experimental potions. Draco, on the other hand, was working at the Ministry as an Unspeakable. He spent most of his time working on different artifacts, but also worked with other departments. The old Slytherin worked with the Aurors more than any other department.Harry startled a little bit when he saw something moving in the hood of Draco’s cloak. Looking over his shoulder, Draco chuckled.“Sorry about that. I forgot Tybalt was back there,” Draco said, reaching into his hood to pull out a small creature.Harry’s eyes went alarmingly wide and his head tilted to the side. Draco shot him a mildly annoyed look.“Don’t say a word about it, Potter. I know what you’re thinking,” Draco said.Words couldn’t describe how Harry felt when Malfoy produced a ferret from his cloak hood. Unlike Draco’s ferret coloring in Fourth Year, this ferret was mostly brown with a little bit of white mixed in. Draco saw a small spark of interest in Harry’s eyes and held out the ferret with both hands.“Would you like to hold him?” Draco asked.Harry dropped his legs down into a crisscross pattern and gently took the ferret from him. He brought it down to his lap and petted it with soft strokes. The ferret chirped happily and moved further up to nuzzle against Harry’s stomach. Draco secretly loved seeing the small smile on the Gryffindor’s face./……/
Severus was flipping through Harry’s medical folder when Draco came into the room. He came over and hopped up on the desk where papers weren’t scattered. Severus laid a hand down on his thigh while using the other to flip a page over. He noted that his lover had showered since coming home.
“Potter went to sleep about a half hour ago.” Smile. “It was nice talking to him.”Severus looked up from the papers with a raised eyebrow.“Did he do any of the talking?” Severus asked.Draco shook his head. When he had asked Potter questions, he had gotten a head nod, shake of the head, or shrug of the shoulders.“No. He kept quiet. But he seemed to like Tybalt,” Draco commented.Severus snorted. “I’m sure he found great amusement in that, considering he was present when Crouch Jr. turned you into one.”Draco leaned down into his lover’s face and blew a bit of hair into his face.“If I recall right, you found great amusement in it, too, Severus,” Draco grinned.Severus decided to shut his lover up the best way he knew how. He twisted his head and covered his mouth with his own. Draco groaned as his lover’s tongue slipped in and devoured his mouth. It was an awkward position and it hurt his back, but the pain was worth it. When it got hard to breathe, the two lovers separated. Draco leaned back up in a sitting position to end the stabbing pain in his back but slid closer, which resulted in Severus’ hand sliding higher.“Behave yourself, Dragon,” Severus growled, squeezing the thigh in his grasp.“Tease.”“Brat.”Draco shook his head. He sat a little bit longer but eventually decided to leave his older lover to his research. He wasn’t sure what was in the papers, but at the moment he didn’t quite care. Picking up his lover’s hand to press a kiss against it, Draco slid off the desk and bid his lover goodnight.“Do me a favor, Dragon?” Severus asked.“Of course,” Draco answered.“Check in on Harry for me?”Draco nodded. He hadn’t told Severus, but he had planned on doing it, anyway. But one thing confused him.“Harry?” Draco asked with a teasing hint in his voice.Severus shot him an annoyed look.“We ‘discussed’ it over dinner. Harry is, at the very least, not objecting to me calling him by his given name,” Severus explained.Draco shrugged. Potter was still Potter to him. He would have to give his verbal consent before Draco would call him Harry. The blonde wizard planted another kiss on his lover before going back upstairs. He used the lit end of his wand to guide him up the stairs and to the guest bedroom.Lowering the intensity of the light, Draco slipped inside. Raising his hand above his head, it looked like Harry was wrestling with the covers. Draco thought maybe he got mixed up with them and couldn’t get free in his sleep. Moving further into the room, Draco swept over to his bedside. As the light from his wand swept over the slumbering brunette, Draco gasped.Still very much asleep, Harry was drenched in sweat and tears were heavily flowing down his face. He had his arms wrapped around himself and there were horrible, bloody scratches up his arms from scratching himself in his sleep. Draco dropped his wand on the bedside table, yanked the sheets back, and slammed his hands down on Harry’s hands, yanking them from his arms. He climbed onto the bed, gathering Harry into his arms and shaking him.“Potter! Potter, wake up!”End of Chapter TwoDecisions, Decisions
