Hermione had gone to bed the night before very early as she had to have a meeting at six in the morning with Lucius and three of his investors. She saw the letter waiting for her but she had been too busy to actually open it. So, she gave the owl a treat and let it out her kitchen window before placing the letter on her counter and leaving for the day. She had gotten her letter from the ministry and was still trying to fight it but in her heart she knew that it was a losing fight. Lucius told her to wait and see who asked to court her and make an educated decision, he was right of course but she didn’t want to admit it.
After her meeting she sat in her office and went through the Malfoy financial books. Narcissa wanted to throw a Spring Fling at the manor and Lucius had put Hermione in charge of giving the woman the funds she needed (if it was smart to do so). This was his way of not having to put up with his wife’s shopping habit and then the inevitable freak out when he tried to give her a spending limit. The Malfoy’s were still richer than most in the wizarding world but they had had to spend so much to keep themselves out of prison that if they weren’t smart they could spend too much and end up like the rest of the common world.
“Leaving early tonight, I see” Lucius said as he followed her in to the magical elevator at seven that night “Like me”
“Least I actually work” Hermione joked “You sit in your office and look at your reflection all day”
“Well I am devastatingly handsome” He answered “I can’t help but want to look at myself”
“Okay” Hermione said sarcastically “You and your receding hairline”
“Do you want to be fired?” He asked and she laughed “Good luck by the way, it’s been a whole 24-hours since the law was put in to effect so I imagine you’ll have a few letters to read tonight”
“Don’t remind me” She sighed “I bought a large bottle of white wine for that very reason”
“Have fun” He chuckled and walked away.
Hermione did indeed have a few letters on her counter. She looked at them and sighed before feeding Crookshanks and making her way around the kitchen fixing herself some spaghetti with a garlic-butter and broccoli. The small pile of letters seemed to mock her from the counter, she could almost hear them calling to her. When her dinner was done she grabbed the letters and went upstairs to her bedroom and got a hot bubble bath going. Once the tub was full, Hermione set the letters next to her and refilled her glass of wine and settling in with a sigh of relief. She picked up the first letter and opened it shuddering when she realized that it was from Goyle.
Dear Granger,
With the new law we can get married.
Greg Goyle.
She sneered at it and pointed her wand at her bedroom and within seconds the parchment and quill she wanted came in. She let it just float there awaiting her to have a need for them, she laid down the letter and opened the next.
Dear Hermione,
We’ve never gotten to know one another before but I think that we are more alike than one might realize at first glance. I am interested in courting you and hope that you will give me a chance.
Blaise Zabini.
Hermione tipped her head to the side with an impressed expression on her face. He was articulate and smart and he had done very well in school but there was something that bothered her. She grabbed the next letter snorting when she realized it was from a Weasley.
Hermione,
Let’s get married! Mums house, right now…I’ll be the dashing redhead in a tux at the end of the aisle…or do you want to wear the tux? Write back to let me know.
Charlie.
Hermione laughed aloud when she read his letter. Charlie didn’t want to be married, he would have been by now if it had been on the top of his to-do list. The thought that he came all the way from Romania just to get married to her in one morning was truly laughable. She shook her head and grabbed the next letter read the first line which had something to do with her beautiful breasts and burned it. The letter after that wasn’t much better, while they’d managed to stay away from mentioning her breasts they did tell her that they couldn’t wait to see her pregnant with the start of their six children. She reached for the last letter and sighed before opening it her mouth dropped open in shock but oddly enough, not horror.
Dear Miss Granger,
By now I am sure that you have been contacted by the ministry about the marriage law and have been informed that men will be asking to court you. I would like to ask to court you, but first I would like to meet
with you and talk first before anything is set in stone so to speak. Please, write back as soon as you’ve made up your mind with an answer please.
I will be waiting patiently.
Severus Snape
With her wine glass empty Hermione grabbed the wine bottle and took a long swig from it. Now was not a time for wine glasses now one needed to drink from the bottle. Severus Snape was interested in courting her? This was an interesting turn of events indeed, she looked at the letter and laughed a little to herself. Who would have thought that she would have this type of letter from the potions master of Hogwarts? What the hell was she going to do about it?
By the time she got out of the tub she was a little lightheaded but not drunk. She was in that area that told her it was time to stop before she got too drunk and would pass out. The parchment and quill followed her in to the bedroom and waited while she sat down and looked at the first note. She wasn’t sure if it was the fact that it was Goyle or that he’d been such a jerk in school but she couldn’t see herself on a date with him at all. Then again if the ministry matched them because they had something in common she was curious as to what she could possibly have in common with Goyle. She wanted to know but she was sure that it had something to do with the physical aspect of things and not anything that actually mattered.
Dear Greg Goyle,
I appreciate the letter that I received from you earlier today and apologize for not writing back sooner but I was at work. I am not making a decision on the courtship just yet but I would like to talk to you via owl. So please, tell me your thoughts on women in the workplace, what you think a woman’s role is in a marriage and your thoughts on children.
Sincerely,
Hermione Granger
She liked the first letter so much that she merely charmed the letters to other parchments, changed the names and sent them out to everyone who had written to her. With the exception, of course, of the man who spoke only about her breasts and the one who apparently wanted to keep her barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen. She didn’t want to waste the parchment on someone when she knew their intention. No, their notes simply reminded them that she was a woman and not made simply for their entertainment and not to contact her again. She was writing up a spending limit for Narcissa’s party when two owls came back. She raised her brows and relieved the birds of their burdens, gave them each a treat and watched them fly out the window before opening the first letter which was from Blaise.
Dear Hermione,
I think that how you are going about this is very smart. Testing everyone a little before meeting them I think it’ll help you weed out the morons from those of us who are honest. Now on to your questions.
I am not a caveman and am not going to say that a woman’s place is in the kitchen. My mother owns her own magical fragrance line and has worked every day since she got out of school. In the same sense if the woman I want to marry doesn’t want to work that is also fine by me but I would hate to have a wife that’s more interested in being a social butterfly.
A woman’s role in a marriage to me is fairly simple. I think she should make her husband look good as he will do the same for her. I think that she should try to help him whenever possible and should try to make life for him as easy as possible. I will admit that I do have an appreciation for the old way of things and think that a woman should honor and (to some degree) obey her man but I think he should give her something to honor and obey.
As for children I have decided I would like four. I was an only child and it was a lonely upbringing two would be okay but four is where my heart is. I hope you’re not scared off.
Sincerely,
Blaise Zabini
Hermione frowned, his letter was perfect. In all honesty she should be writing to him accepting his courtship right away but something held her back. She was curious about Snape’s answer and on top of that she wasn’t sure that she agreed with the whole ‘obeying’ thing that he mentioned. And four kids?! She put his letter aside and picked up the other one that was from Goyle and groaned within a few minutes of reading it.
Hermione,
I honestly think that the business world is a world for men not women. I know that makes me sound like a jerk and I apologize but that’s how I feel, I was raised by death eaters and I know that you know that but they did teach me things. My father always taught me that a woman should be taken care of, to not have a worry about politics or money. Her biggest problems should be picking out the right dress for a party or who was going to sit with whom at a dinner party. So that should give you a pretty good idea of how I feel about roles in a marriage as well and as for kids we can have as many as you like. I will of course make sure that there is a house-elf to be the nanny and keep them occupied when you don’t want them around. Think about it.
Gregory Goyle
Hermione looked horrified down at the parchment but then again at least he was being honest about his way of thinking. His handwriting was atrocious but he spelled all the words correctly (yes, that did surprise her) and he was very informative. His apparent intelligence surprised her but he had always been quiet and she never guessed what was going on his head. She was stunned but his way of thinking as it bothered her greatly, she leaned back in to her pillows and looked at the letters. Two Slytherins and two men that couldn’t be any more different than the other. She turned out her light and closed her eyes falling asleep in minutes after doing so but her dreams were odd. Colorful dresses, dinner parties, spring flings, house-elves and children danced behind her closed eyelids all night.
A/N: I hope this chapter was a good look at Hermione’s views on everything. PLEASE REVIEW!!!!
