Chapter 2: A Brief Glimpse of His Life
Lucius watched as Narcissa happily entertained the twin boys who had already finished their breakfast of fruit and oatmeal, which she had helped them eat. Lucius and Narcissa had started to think of Draco and Cygnus as twins from the moment they had performed the spells. It was better this way. That they treated the boys as twins. They would learn the truth when they were seventeen. Never mind that Cygnus was technically 26 days younger than Draco. They would celebrate Cygnus’ birthday with Draco’s every year and none would be the wiser.
Narcissa got a rag from a house-elf and carefully wiped the food off the babies’ faces and hands before lifting them down to the floor and setting them loose with Wipsy on their heels to keep an eye on them and out of trouble. She would get the Mistress if the boys tussled or got into any trouble. Narcissa didn’t leave the boys with Wipsy for hours on end, but usually long enough for her to handle some paperwork or things like that.
The boys toddled off, talking to each other in babbles and smiling at each other happily. Even though they had only met about a week before, they already behaved as brothers. Wipsy would make sure they made it to the playroom.
“What do we have today?” Narcissa asked, picking at her toast.
“Not much, other than planning the Introduction.” Lucius replied evenly, looking down at the Daily Prophet. “I do have to go into the Ministry and speak with the Minister about some bills he’s trying to get passed the Wizenmagot.”
“Fudge is a bumbling fool.” Narcissa said with a sigh.
“Yes, but he helps us from time to time.” Lucius said as a reminder.
Narcissa sighed and moved on with her thoughts. “I can’t invite any of your old crowd over. It’ll look suspicious to the Aurors who have been watching our front gate since the war ended.”
“We can have the Introduction with only Purebloods in attendance, though. Not all of them were on His side. And this will cement that we aren’t on His side and never were on His side.” Lucius said calmly.
“The boys are sixteen months old. What if we wait until their 2nd birthday? Make it a joint celebration? Usually this is done on the 1st birthday, but we can use the excuse of the war and Cygnus being sickly to explain why we waited.” Narcissa said, just puzzling it out, out loud.
Lucius made noises of agreement. The two of them finished their breakfast in silence. Lucius reading his paper while Narcissa considered the party plans. After Lucius left for the day Narcissa went to check on the boys. Both of whom were about ready to go down for naps. Narcissa scooped them up, sending Wipsy for bottles for them both. She rocked them both to sleep, preferring to bond with them and hold them without the help of the house-elves.
Over the next few months Narcissa settled into a schedule with the boys. Lucius usually wandered off after breakfast, either to paperwork for the family business or to work with the Minister on some project or another. Narcissa spent her mornings playing with the boys, she read to them, and just generally enjoyed spending time with her boys.
When they were eighteen-months-old Lucius and Narcissa took them on an excursion to a restaurant. The next day the Daily Prophet had a photo on the front page of the family walking together. Draco had thrown a few minutes prior to the photo being taken to be put down. So what the photo showed was Narcissa holding Draco’s hand while he walked beside them. While Cygnus was being carried on Lucius’ hip. The two adults held hands surreptitiously. Both had on the carefully schooled features of any Black or Malfoy. The article speculated about this second child who had not been seen previously.
On their second birthday Narcissa carefully dressed the two boys in suits with matching gray ties. Narcissa wore a simple gray-silk dress that matched the ties and their father wore a suit with a matching gray tie. The Malfoy Family was united as a front. The downstairs was full of friends, family, ministry officials, and others who would have been offended at not receiving an invitation to the party.
“Oh, Narcissa, your boys are beautiful.” Mrs. Parkinson said cheerfully as she looked at the two of them. “How come this is the first time I’m seeing Cygnus?” She asked as she picked up the smaller of the two boys.
“He had a really weak immune system when he was born.” Narcissa answered readily and took Cygnus as soon as he reached for her. She gently kissed her boy’s forehead and carefully wiped off the lipstick mark. She put Cygnus down on the floor and led him over to where his future classmates and brother were playing and screeching. Cygnus readily joined the fray of kids.
Narcissa and Lucius made the rounds, made sure that everyone saw the boys, and answered questions from everyone about where Cygnus had been up until a couple of months ago.
They answered readily with his weak immune system.
At the end of the night Narcissa and Lucius took the boys upstairs and got them ready for bed together. Narcissa and Lucius spent the whole time talking softly to the boys as they got them to sleep and laid them down. The boys would be separated when they moved from cribs to toddler beds, but for now they were comfortable sharing a room.
Narcissa and Lucius left the room quietly and headed for their own.
“I think that went well.” Narcissa said as she sat at her vanity and brushed her hair out.
“I would have to agree with that statement.” Lucius said, walking over and gently kissing Narcissa’s forehead.
“Hopefully that will smooth over any bumps in Cygnus’ sudden appearance.” Narcissa said, smiling up at her husband.
Lucius murmured in agreement. The two adults went to bed, Lucius gently kissed his wife and she curled up to him, kissing him back gently.
Over the next few years they had play dates almost constant, either going to their friends’ houses, or their friends coming over to their house.
When they were four they began their first lessons with a private tutor.
Lucius enjoyed watching the very quiet war between his sons. They fought only academically and only in an attempt to prove which one of them was better. He allowed it because it made them both the best that they could be.
Lucius enjoyed watching his sons grow. At home, in private, they grew into loving, mature young boys who enjoyed playing, but also studying. Out in public they adopted the ‘Malfoy look’, keeping their face blank, or wearing small sneers if something disgusted or upset them. But somehow, even though they were spoiled rotten, they were never truly spoiled because they still shared with each other often.
Severus was a constant visitor to the Manor during these pre-Hogwarts years and he tutored the boys in Potion making. Lucius remembered Draco’s look of triumph when he realized that he excelled at potions while Cygnus needed more help. But Draco also knew that Cygnus excelled in Musical Theory and playing the piano, while he had difficulty with the basics. Lucius often found the two helping each other learn new steps in each field, and this made him realize that the boys were stronger being raised together than if Cygnus had gone to Narcissa’s cousin Sirius, or to any of Lily’s relatives.
Finally it was the night of the boys eleventh birthday. They were going to have a party in a couple of days, but tonight was about a Malfoy tradition, and they were nervous.
Draco and Cygnus stood in their separate rooms until their father called them out into the hallway, where they moved and stood on either side of Narcissa. Narcissa’s hands itched with the urge to take their hands, but that was not allowed for this. Lucius locked the doors to their ‘baby rooms,’ then turned and handed each boy the key that he had used.
“Tonight you are entering a new phase of your life. Your Hogwarts letters will come soon, and you will be working on school work, and learning new theories for the next six years. It is time to put childish games, and childish toys behind you.” Lucius said to the boys, who then turned and began walking down the hall, leading the adults across the Manor to their own private wing of the huge house.
Draco and Cygnus looked at each other in nervousness and gave small smiles to encourage the other and then they turned their backs on each other and faced the doors of their new rooms. They inserted the keys that had locked their ‘baby rooms’ into the doors of their new rooms and opened the doors simultaneously. Both made joyful sounds and dashed into their separate rooms to check out their new rooms.
The adults smiled indulgently before Lucius and Narcissa led their guest downstairs for a nightcap.
Original A/N: So, I considered writing chapter after chapter of the boys growing up, but my muse didn’t like that idea. She’s allowing me this one chapter and I wanted to show you just a few of the things I thought about when this idea came to me.
I apologize if it’s a bit short and you hate it, hang in there with me, next chapter is shopping in Diagon Alley and the Hogwarts express.
A/N: Alright. So I redid the first half of the chapter. I went into more detail on some simple things and just made it flow better to myself.
