Peverell Manor, Devon, England
Dear Ms. Peverell,
We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed list of all necessary school books and equipment.
Term begins on 1 September. We await your owl by no later than 31 July.
Yours sincerely,
Minerva McGonagall
Deputy Headmistress
The girl slowly looked up from the letter, turning to her parents. “Mum?” She asked, her voice shaking, “What are we going to do?”
“I'll send a letter to Dumbledore and McGonagall.” Her mother calmly assessed the situation before giving her reply, “I'll explain what's going on, and give them a false last name. That should get you through Hogwarts. But there is absolutely no way that you are not going to school.”
“I understand.” Setting the letter down on the table, she brushed her black hair over her shoulder and stood up, telling her parents, “I need some air. If you need me, I'll probably be by the river.”
The dark-haired girl pushed open the back door and stepped outside, the heels of her flats clicking on the stone walkway as she walked through the garden. She considered the path to the river to be one of the most beautiful on the grounds, and she herself personally selected the house elves who maintained that area of the gardens.
“I don't want to leave.” She sighed to herself, brushing her fingers over a blooming rose, “I've never been outside the grounds, and Hogwarts is so far away. I do want to make friends, though. Other than the house elves, that is. Hokey and Drippy are so sweet, and I love how careful they are with the river gardens, but it's just not the same as having another witch around. Even a wizard my age would be nice. But even at Hogwarts, nobody will know who I am. I am to be placed under an assumed last name, and can never reveal the full extent of my abilities unless I am in grave danger.”
She stopped at the river, sitting on a bench that had been carved out of a single solid block of marble. The family crest was proudly engraved in the centre of the bench's backrest.
Running her fingers over the petals of a fully-bloomed lily that had bent over the bench, she gazed out over the water, contemplating what going to Hogwarts would mean for her future. If her mother didn't get pregnant and give birth to a boy, the Peverell line would end with her, there would never be another Peverell after she got married, and the name would die out.
After her fourth year, she would have to start looking for a boyfriend with the thought that she might marry someday. Her fiancé would have to be let in on the secret — that she was actually a Peverell — in order for him to truly be able to see her for who she really was. Of course, there was the possibility that she was fated to be part of one of the extremely rare triads, in which case both of the other members of the triad would have to know.
“It would be strange to be part of a triad.” She muttered to herself, plucking a rose that had burst into bloom by her ankle, “Every person getting equal amounts of attention from the others, or the jealousy can cause everything to fall into chaos. Of course, the jealousy can cause very interesting things to happen, even if the you are giving equal amounts of attention to the other two in the triad, if what that book said is correct…”
Her black hair flew as she shook her head to clear her thoughts, seeing as she was looking years into the future. She carefully tucked the rose into her hair as she stood up. She slowly walked down to the water's edge and sank down to sit beside the river. Gently running her right hand across the surface of the water, she rested her left hand on her leg, looking out at the fields across from her. She longed to swim across the river and run around, but knew that she never would. It was too big of a risk, even that one small thing could expose her family's location, and they couldn't have that, could they? So she just settled for daydreaming, hoping that one day, everything would end, and her family would be able to come out of hiding.
Ottery St. Catchpole, Devon, England
“Fred, George, your letters came!” A red-haired woman stood at the bottom of a staircase and yelled up, calling for her twin sons, “Come down here and read them!”
“But Mum ―” One of the twins popped his ginger-haired head around the corner of the landing, his identical twin not far behind.
“― We've already been through this ―” The second twin continues the sentence without missing a heartbeat.
“― Three times!” The first one finishes the exclamation, then continues, “First with Bill ―”
“― then Charlie ―”
“― don't forget Percy ―”
“And now us!” They finish together, and the first twin goes on to say, “I really don't think we need to read the letters all over again, do you, George?” He looks over at his twin, who shakes his head.
“Not at all, Fred.”
If only they had read the letter, instead of having their mother take the shopping lists and just toss the letters into the rubbish bin… So much trouble could have been avoided that way…
