Just to See You SmileChapter 2
The night air was cool as Charlie stepped out into the back garden; stretching and letting out a long sigh, he looked around. He spotted Ron lying on the grass not too far off. His younger brother had been very quiet during dinner; Ron also had looked extremely tired, and Charlie had to wonder how much sleep the young Auror was actually getting. He debated with himself for a moment before walking over to where Ron was lying down.“Mind if I sit?” he asked. Ron didn't even look at his older brother, but he shrugged a shoulder as an answer. Charlie sat next to Ron and also looked up at the sky; it wasn't a completely clear night, but some stars could still be seen through the gaps in the clouds. Neither of them said anything for a long time. And when the silence was broken, it was Ron who spoke first.“I think they're going to give up the search,” Ron said, knowing that he didn't have to say who he was talking about. Harry had been the only person that anyone ever talked about finding. But this news caught Charlie by surprise, mostly because the last time he had been home, there had still be a lot of people looking for Harry.“Is that what they said? I assume it hasn't hit the papers yet, otherwise I'm sure I would have heard about it,” Charlie said looking down at his brother.“No, they haven't even told anyone in the department yet. It's just... it's just a feeling I've got,” Ron explained. “We caught another Death Eater today; that will be in the paper tomorrow. But when they brought him in, I was shoved off to my office with paperwork to do. I'm not even allowed to question him. Someone else is going to do the questioning tomorrow,” Ron informed his brother.“Maybe they just think you're working yourself to hard,” Charlie suggested, deeply concerned for his youngest brother. “It's easy to tell how tired you are just by looking at you.” Charlie ran a hand through his own hair.“They've tried making me take time off,” Ron told him. “I can't though. I have to be doing something. Even if it's not actively looking for Harry, I have to be doing something,” he tried to explain.Charlie just nodded. “I know, but you should try and get some rest. You try taking a potion?” he suggested and Ron shook his head.“With the way I am right now, I'm more afraid of becoming too dependent on it.” Ron said looking up at Charlie.“Smart, but I'm sure a good dose of dreamless sleep could do you wonders right now,” Charlie pointed out. “Give you a good night sleep to start your search fresh.” Charlie watched as Ron sat up and stretched.“You sound like you're speaking from experience,” Ron said raising an eyebrow at Charlie. The older red-head shrugged his shoulders. “Everyone has a time in their life when they need to rely on sleeping potions to some extent, as long as you don't overdo it,” Charlie said, though he knew why Ron was so worried; it hadn't been all that long ago when George had gotten too dependent on sleeping potions. All of them had understood his reasoning behind it, and let it slide for far too long.“Maybe I'll look into it later. I can go a couple more days before I really need it I think,” Ron said, ignoring the look he was now getting from his older brother. Before anything else could be said about it the back door to the Burrow slammed open.“Charlie?” Molly called from the door, looking around before she spotted both her sons over on the grass. “There's a floo call from the Dragon Reserve for you, they said it's an emergency,” she said looking worriedly at Charlie as he stood up and hurried back towards the house.“Did they say what the emergency was?” he asked following his mother back into the house.“No, they wouldn't tell me.” She watched as Charlie went straight to the fireplace and knelt down.“Stefan? What's wrong?” he asked well aware of his mother standing behind him.“Charlie, there's a huge emergency here. Someone got into the Dragon enclosure,” was all that Stefan had to say before Charlie stood up again. There was no need to go into detail; it was dangerous enough for a Dragon Handler to go into an enclosure, but for someone who was untrained…“I'm coming through; give me the details when I get there,” Charlie said, Stefan nodded once and then was gone from the fire.“Charlie?” Molly looked worried and Charlie knew she wanted to ask him not to go, so he turned and gave her a small smile.“It's fine, Mum, they just want me there to make sure that things don't get to crazy,” he said before grabbing the floo off the mantle and, taking a large pinch, he threw it into the fire. “I'll call later, just so you know that I'm fine,” he promised before stepping into the fire, calling out his destination and vanishing.Stefan was waiting for him when he stepped out of the floo. Looking around, the first thing that Charlie noticed was the lack of people, and he assumed that they were all outside with the dragons.“Thank Merlin you're here,” Stefan sighed and Charlie raised an eyebrow at him. Stefan hadn't been at the reserve all that long, but he had been there long enough that he should have known what to do in an emergency like this.“What happened?” Charlie asked.“The wards went off around one the nesting enclosure and we were just getting a small group together to check it out, but Saphira suddenly took off,” Stefan explained and Charlie frowned. Saphira was usually one of the better behaved Dragons; but this was her first clutch and even Charlie had noticed that she was a little more temperamental as of late. If someone had actually broken into the enclosure she would have seen that as a threat.“Did you find out who broke into the enclosure?” Charlie asked and Stefan looked a little nervous.“That's why I had to call you. Saphira didn't hurt anyone, and as far as we can tell she didn't even get to the kid before the team showed up to calm her down and get the kid out of the enclosure.” Stefan looked at Charlie as the red-head frowned at him more. “I think it might be better to show you,” Stefan said and turned to lead the way.Charlie was confused, he thought there had been a problem with the Dragons and that's why he had been called back. This wasn't the first time that someone had broken in, in an attempt to steal a Dragon egg or two but something was different this time.“We're waiting for the healer to show up so they can take a look at him. But he's alive; though...with the injuries he has, I'm surprised he was even able to move at all. We don't even know how he got into the enclosure in the first place.” Stefan led Charlie out of the main building and down to where the small medical building was located. As soon as they opened the door the first thing that could be heard was screaming.“Oh Merlin, he's actually awake,” Stefan said and looked a shade paler.“Stefan, you idiot!” someone shouted from down the hall. “What part of 'watch him' didn't you understand?”“I wasn't gone that long, Annie, I went to call Charlie,” Stefan said as he hurried down the hall, leaving Charlie at the door to watch the other two dragon handlers disappear into the room that the screaming was coming from. The last time he had heard anyone scream like that had been during the battle at Hogwarts. It sent shivers down his spine.“Are you going to just stand there, or get in here and help us?” Annie snapped at him as she poked her head out of the room to glare at the red-head. Shaking his head to clear, it Charlie went to the room.He stood in the doorway and watched as Stefan tried to hold the struggling screaming boy down onto the bed while Annie tried to find a good way to get the kid to drink a potion. Charlie assumed it was either a pain potion or maybe a sleeping draft. It wasn't until Stefan shifted his position to try and get a better hold on the struggling boy, and give Annie room to work that Charlie saw the face of the frightened child for the first time. All color drained from Charlie's face when he saw familiar green eyes wide with fear as they darted around rapidly as the boy continued to struggle against Stefan. Annie finally managed to get close enough to try and give the potion to the boy but before the vial had even touched his lips, Harry arched his back struggling harder and screaming louder.“Let him go!” Charlie yelled, shocking both Stefan and Annie. Stefan lost his grip on Harry when the boy kicked out and darted off the bed. Charlie watched as Harry ran right into a table knocking potions onto the floor. The frightened boy didn't stop though as he felt his way frantically around the table, as though he couldn’t see a thing. Tears were streaming down Harry’s face as Charlie rushed to him and grabbed Harry as gently as he could.Harry screamed and started struggling again. “No!” the smaller boy tried to yell as he kicked out, but he had screamed his throat raw so no sound came out. Charlie held Harry tighter; he didn't want to hurt him but with the way Harry was flailing, Charlie was worried that he was going to do himself harm anyway. The small boy was obviously hurt enough. “No, please,” Harry tried pleading again with the person who was currently holding him.“Harry,” Charlie finally said and the boy stopped struggling for a moment. “Harry, it's okay. It's Charlie Weasley. You're safe now,” Charlie said and watched as Harry stopped struggling completely.Lifting his head slightly as if he were trying to see where the red-head was, Harry forced out a whisper. “Charlie...?”“That's right, I'm here. You're safe now,” Charlie repeated, frowning when Harry shook his head and started struggling again.“Not safe, never safe,” Harry choked out. “Lying!” Charlie felt his heart break as Harry weakly struggled against him; whatever energy the boy had had was obviously fading. He continued to hold Harry as the boy's struggles stopped and Harry’s body sagged slightly in his arms.Lifting him up easily, Charlie put Harry back on the bed and looked at Annie. “Is that a pain potion?” he asked, nodding to the vial she was still holding. She nodded and silently handed it to him. The red-head took it and got Harry to swallow it.“So I was right,” Stefan said, “it is Harry Potter.”Charlie nodded. “Yes, it is....what in Merlin's name happened to him?” Now that Harry was calm, the young man was just lying there, staring, with a vacant expression on his face that worried Charlie greatly, not to mention the numerous injuries that littered his body.“This is how he was found,” Annie answered. “I've managed to record some of his injuries, but we have to wait for the healer for a more complete diagnostic.”Charlie nodded as he stood there and got a good look at Harry for the first time. The boy was thinner then Charlie remembered, bruises on the wrists and ankles indicated that he had most likely been tied up for a very long time. Fresh cuts and bruises on top of old ones proved that he had been tortured, but that was something they had all guessed before now. The only question about that was how bad it was."Should we tell someone?" Stefan asked. Charlie sighed and shook his head."With how badly he just reacted, it might be best if we didn't tell anyone just yet." Charlie felt horrible for suggesting it, but if news got out now that Harry was alive, in this condition, there was no telling what would happen. “We'll wait to hear what the healer has to say first,” Charlie said and stood up straight.“I can sit with him now,” he said; Stefan nodded and left the room while Annie started cleaning up the mess that Harry had made in his frantic attempt of escape.-------------------------xIt was cruel. Harry was sure that his captors had found a new way to torture him; first giving him a taste of freedom, only for it to be snatched away and for him to be denied death once more. And now there were people around, they had tried talking to him. And then someone claiming to be Charlie had shown up. Harry knew that it couldn't have been Charlie, because no one was looking for him anymore.A noise in the room had Harry suddenly alert, though he kept his eyes closed pretending to still be asleep.“I've done the diagnostic, and I've healed what few minor injuries he has.” Someone spoke and Harry frowned; he didn't recognise the voice, so it couldn't have been one of his captors. He had only heard them once, but he was sure that they hadn't sounded quite so professional, nor had they had that unfamiliar accent.“There had been internal bleeding, and the bruises will fade in time. The scars will also fade with help. There are two things that have me worried though. The bottoms of his feet seem to have been cut up repeatedly and there are signs of infection. I've healed them as much as I can, but he should stay off his feet as much as possible until they are fully healed.”Harry frown deepened; he knew his feet had been cut up, he should have guessed that they had been infected as well. And his little run outside probably hadn't helped them any either.“That should be fine. What else has you worried though?” Harry's heart skipped a beat when he heard that familiar voice that had claimed to be Charlie. It sounded like him, but Harry didn't want to hope too much. His captors could come back for him and all this would be snatched away again. Unless this really was just a trick his captors had thought up.“There seems to have been a lot of damage done to his eyes. I can't find the cause of it, and he will have to be awake for me to fully examine him.”Harry felt someone touch his head then and he flinched away violently. “Harry?” It was Charlie. “Harry, are you awake?” he asked and Harry blinked open his eyes.“You are one strong little lad,” the other voice commented and Harry felt another hand on his head. He flinched away again and sat up in an attempt to distance himself from anyone touching him. “Easy, no one's going to hurt you here,” the voice reassured him, at least that's what Harry thought this person was trying to do. It wasn't working though. “Harry, my name is Healer Iulian, would you mind if I took a look at your eyes?” he requested.“Don't touch me!” Harry demanded, scooting further away from this man's voice. He was surprised to find that his throat didn't hurt any more when he talked, it still felt itchy but the pain was gone. That's when he realised that the pain in his whole body was gone as well. Someone really had healed him.“No one will touch you, Harry.” Charlie said. “Healer Iulian just wants to see what damage was done to your eyes, so he might be able to fix it.”“Can't fix it...” Harry frowned turning his head in the direction that Charlie's voice had come from.“I would like to try, if I can,” Iulian said. “There are potions-”“NO POTIONS!” Harry moved further away until his back was against something solid, he didn't know if it was the wall or the head board of the bed.Someone sighed and Harry felt the bed dip slightly. “Alright, no potions.” It was Charlie again, but Harry didn't relax and Charlie sighed again. “Harry, we're only trying to help.”Harry frowned tilting his head slightly. “Why...?” he asked. If they had really wanted to help, why had it taken them so long to find him? But then something else dawned on Harry, maybe he hadn't been rescued, maybe his mind had finally snapped. Maybe he was still tied up in that place being tortured, and his mind had created this place for him to escape.“Harry, you've been missing for seven months. I'm still shocked that you're here,” Charlie admitted.“...maybe I'm not...just another dream...” Harry lowered his head and continued thinking that thought process through.“Harry, this isn't a dream,” the healer tried to say but Harry shook his head.“Not in pain...I'm here, it's a dream...or maybe I'm dead.” Harry actually smiled at that. “Am I finally dead? My luck, dead, still blind.” Harry couldn't help but laugh at that, but it was a humorless laugh. Charlie looked at Harry worried about the way the small boy was acting, turning to look healer the man sighed and shook his head.“He will need time to adjust. Somewhere familiar, with people he knows,” Iulian said standing up straighter again. “But the fewer people that know, the better.” He looked at Charlie who nodded his agreement. Harry would easily be shipped off to the mental ward at St. Mungo’s if the wrong people found out about the savior.“When he's fit for travel, I may take him to the Burrow, that's a fairly familiar place for him I think,” Charlie said.“Dead man can still hear you,” Harry said, laughing again, and Charlie decided that he really didn't like seeing Harry like this.“Let him get some more rest, I will be back again tomorrow to check on him,” Iulian said and left Charlie alone with Harry again. Neither of them spoke, but Charlie sat there and watched Harry as the boy shifted back around on the bed finding the edge of it and moved to stand up.“You shouldn't be on your feet,” Charlie said causing Harry to jump slightly. Harry turned his head slightly towards Charlie.“...still here?” he asked.Charlie nodded even though Harry couldn't see it. “Yes, I'm still here. I'm not going anywhere.” Charlie wasn't expecting a response to that as Harry settled back down onto the bed.“...good, don't want to be dead alone,” the boy said his eyes closing as he laid back down. Charlie sighed in relief as Harry's breathing evened out and the boy was asleep again. He had never seen Harry act like that before, it had frightened him. He wanted to rush home and tell his family that Harry was alive but he didn’t want to leave the young man alone, not even for a moment, given how much Harry had obviously been through. Harry was having enough trouble believing that he was really there as it was, and Charlie didn’t want to risk Harry waking up and him not being there. It was going to be a few days before he would let any of his family see him anyway; he didn't want them to see Harry like this, knowing that Harry wouldn’t want them to. Maybe Harry would be a little more in his right mind in a few days; but, as he watched Harry sleeping, Charlie wondered if that was too much to hope for.TBCAs I said in the first chapter, this story is not my main focus, I am working on it when I have the inspiration to.
