Suddenly, a strong wind rose, blowing some dead leaves of its way, making Lilla leap back to the present day.
Lilla jumped to her feet, looking around. The darkness embraced the thick forest and nothing could be seen between the trees. She most possibly would have been able to see much more some years ago. But now, the black veil was impenetrable for her eyes.
She stood still, scanning the surroundings for a few minutes but nothing happened. No one and nothing appeared, and the silence fell again.
She alighted on the ground, wrapping her arms around her knees. Although it was already springtime, the nights were still quite chilly.
She moved her arms slightly, up and down, left arm, right arm. Slowly, the wings appeared between her shoulder blades, unfolding slowly. They were huge, unlike any bird’s. Well, they had to be, if they were to carry an adult woman.
Of course, she understood that she was living in the world of magic and such things as transformation into animals was quite common. But, apparently, not being able to change into an animal but having only wings instead, was something unusual. Even for wizards.
Her father was an Animagus, taking the form of an eagle. And he possessed all the qualities usually associated with this bird - he was decisive, dynamic, competitive, clever – he was a born leader, one might say. He had a real chance of becoming the Minister of Magic, but he knew very well that it was not an appropriate place for his adventurous nature. So, even though he loved his wife and daughter to great extent, his sense of adventure and his independence took over him. As a result, he ended up dead at some exotic place where magic was too dark to be dealt with.
Lilla was fifteen when it happened.
Her mother, on the other hand, was a Metamorphomagus. She used to entertain her daughter with multiple changes of her face or hair. She stopped doing that after her husband had died.
And the result of the relationship between the Animagus and the Metamorphomagus was a girl that knew not what she was.
When her mother was pregnant, no one knew exactly what their child would turn out to be like. Would she be a Metamorphomagus, like her mother? This ability was only to be inherited, so there was a chance. Or maybe she would choose the long and arduous way of becoming an Animagus, like her father? If so, which animal form would she take?
She turned out to be neither.
The combination of the parents’ genes made the daughter quite unusual. Through this combination, the Animagi genes, instead of the Metamorphomagi ones, became hereditary. This way, Lilla came out to be a half-Animagus. A girl who could spread her wings at will, gifted with birdlike vision.
Unlike her mother, she couldn’t change her appearance. Unlike her father, she couldn’t change into a bird completely.
Her parents were really proud, and called her their wondrous treasure. But the rest of the world didn’t really know what to think of her. Some were curious, amazed, some sceptical, others hostile even, calling her a freak. But a lot of witches and wizards treated her… normally. Accepted who she was, even though she wasn’t yet quite able to accept it herself.
When she was a child, she was not yet fully able to control her wings, they tended to unfold whenever they felt like unfurling. Sometimes it scared the shit out of other kids when Lilla was running with them and then, out of the blue, she was hovering above them.
Many times she had been ashamed of that “gift” but her parents kept encouraging her to be proud of who she was. And finally, with entering Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry came control and acceptance. She tried not to expose her wings too much, though, only when necessary. This way some people didn’t even know she was unlike the rest of them.
And even though she was not a professional Auror, her assets turned out to be valuable for the Order of the Phoenix. She was able to spot danger from a few miles thanks to her eagle-like sight. Being an Obliviator also turned to her advantage. Getting information was usually a piece of piss, as she could make people forget they had even seen her.
Now, as she was sitting on the forest cover, shivering in cold night air, her wings coiled around her body. At least they could keep her protected from the wind.
She was scanning the woods around her, looking for any trace of danger approaching. Her watch was about to last a couple of hours more. Harry, Ron and Hermione were in the tent, probably sleeping.
The slightest sound of silver clinking reached her ears. She looked down, at the fine silver bracelet with two pendants. She dabbed them with her finger. They clinked harmoniously, giving a soft jingle of silver bells.
Lilla smiled nostalgically.
When the headquarters of the Order became a house known as 12 Grimmauld Place, that was when she met him.
Sirius Black.
Imprisonment in Azkaban had taken its toll on him. He tended to fall into a reverie, staring into one spot for hours. At such times his face was becoming blank, totally expressionless, and his eyes seemed dead. Smiles almost never reached his eyes.
But at the same time he was capable of deepest of commitments. He was ready to sacrifice his life to save his loved ones.
To cut a long story short, they fell in love. Some romantics might have called it “love at first sight”. But it wasn’t exactly so, neither of them believed in that shit. But it was true that from the very beginning they were attracted to each other. On the edge of another war, they were just two people hungry for love, for touch and passion, who knew that they are running out of time. So they didn’t hesitate, didn’t want to wait for a better moment, for a better future because it might never come. They simply wanted to maximise each and every minute they had been given.
And still, the time they might have had together, had been taken from them.
The bracelet she was now wearing was a gift and a reminder of what she had lost. The gift from someone who had taken a permanent place in her heart. Whom she loved and cared for more than anything in her life.
And now he was dead.
