Chapter 2
Siruis POV
On platform 9 and ¾ I stood with my family. Mother and my aunt were discussing Lucius and Narcissa’s upcoming engagement party during the Christmas break. It all sounded so boring, I hoped I wouldn’t be forced to attend, but my hopes of avoiding it were small. I’d have to make sure I had a date, mother would be annoying me until I asked someone. The small voice in my head suggested I could ask Lex, she’d also be attending anyway. I’d have to muster up some of that famous Gryffindor courage for that.
Lucius and Narcissa were both prefects, starting their 6th year, they would be leaving school soon. My other cousin Andromeda was in her final year, I knew her to be dating the muggleborn Ted Tonks, which would surely result in her disowning if she didn’t find a proper pureblood husband by the end of the school year. I was sure that my aunt would even accept a half blood at this point, but Andromeda seemed genuinely taken with Ted.
I had always hated how much family and lineage were important to my family. No doubt my mother would expect me to marry someone from another pureblood house. I had disappointed my family by being sorted into Gryffindor. Slytherin was the preferred house, my brother Regulus had been sorted into it, and if it wasn’t Slytherin, Ravenclaw was also a good option, but none of my ancestors had ever been sorted in Gryffindor. I truly was the shame of the family.
I said goodbye to my mother, and set out to find my friends. I found James soon enough, as usual he was standing near where Evans and her family were. I rolled my eyes before greeting my friend. ‘Did you have a good summer?’ I asked. ‘Uneventful’ James replied. We were soon joined by Remus, and Peter. At the sound of the whistle, we said goodbye to the Potters and boarded the train.
Remus had already found us a free compartment, and we sat down, discussing our summer holidays.
Peter’s had been the usual, he was trying to convince us that he had scored big time with one of the girls in his village, but I was sure I didn’t believe his story. Only a blind woman would take Peter, even for a one night stand.
Remus had spent the holidays at home with his parents, they had gone on holiday to France in between the full moons. He’d seen some nice places, and met many foreign witches and wizards.
James had been up to his usual mischief, often leaving his fathers’ premises without permission. They had also gone on holiday, to New York, as James’ mother had some family there. James was telling us a funny story of a prank he and his cousins had played on his uncle as the door slid open.
It was Alexandra.
‘What do you want Zabini? Peter said rudely, his glance traveling over her body, as if he was undressing her with his eyes. I had to restrain myself from teaching him some manners.
She looked surprised by Peter’s hostile demeanour, and risked a glance in my direction, raising her eyebrows. ‘I’m sorry, I was looking for someone, clearly I have the wrong compartment.’ James didn’t miss a beat in answering her ‘Why would anyone bother looking for Snivellus?’. Lex glared at him, turned on her heel and left. So much for my friends not minding her as much, I thought.
I had hoped to be able to remain neutral during my friends bullying of her, maybe it would redeem me a bit in her esteem.
Not that I generally took part in the insults Peter and James flung at her, I knew better than to anger Lex. I had played a few pranks on her, but stopped after she landed me in the hospital with a well cast curse. Last year she’d proven herself to be a very good dueller, by landing James in the hospital wing at duelling club.
The rest of the journey we spent planning our little excursions, and decided who to prank.
I didn’t see Lex again until we were waiting for the carriages.
When I heard laughter, I turned around and saw her walking towards the carriage behind ours with James’ crush Lily Evans, my brother Regulus, a Ravenclaw called Mary Giddeon, and Snivellus. James also wheeled around, having noticed Evans, who didn’t once glance our way. James had been trying in vain to have Evans go out with him. I was sure that, if we would lay off the bullying of Snivellus, she’d come to her senses. The same would probably go for Lex.
Just when I was thinking this, I saw Severus extend his hand to a laughing Alexandra, to help her in the carriage. Again I had the feeling like I wanted to punch someone, preferably Snivellus. Who did he think he was, touching her, even if it was in such an innocent way. I’d been teasing Lex about it all summer, but the way Snivellus was behaving, it was obvious that there was something more to them than just friendship.
Getting in to my own carriage I thought he would keep an eye on them from now on, I planned to ask Regulus about it. I told myself I didn’t want Lex’ feelings to get hurt, I was merely looking out for her, as any friend would.
At the feast I did just that, my eyes followed her from the moment I spotted her. She and Mary said goodbye to Evans, Regulus and Snape, and took their seats at the Ravenclaw table.
‘Padfoot, what are you looking at?’ James’ voice interrupted my line of thought. I quickly looked away from Lex. ‘Nothing’ I replied. The rest of the meal I tried, and failed, to keep my eyes to my own table. I glanced into Lex’ direction every few minutes. Until her friend Mary saw me looking. She said something to Lex, who raised her eyes to look at me questioningly.
When diner was over, I went straight to bed, hoping sleep would calm my thoughts.
