Hermione rolled over in bed the next morning to find a body next to her. She smiled. She almost forgot what it was like to wake up to someone in her bed. Usually it was a man, but Luna was something special. They have had a special relationship, on and off, for almost five years. Not long after the war had ended.
Luna stirred awake. “Mmm, is it morning already. I slept like a Wrackspurt.”
“Wrackspurt, don't exist,” Hermione said, yawning.
“Glad I didn't try going home last night, I was exhausted.” Luna stretched like a cat.
“Obviously not too exhausted.” Hermione smiled.
“Mmm, that did bring back some fond memories. Why don't we do that more often?” Luna asked as she sat up and stretched.
“Because I have a very demanding job and no personal life.” Hermione frowned.
“You really need to change that. You are no fun anymore. Even Ron and Harry stopped trying to hang out with you.” Luna frowned.
“Thank you for this edition of Your Life Sucks.”
“I'm just trying to tell you that this job has taken over your life,” Luna said with remorse, she didn't want to cause Hermione stress.
“What I am doing...”
“Yes, I know it's important, but so are your friends and family. Please don’t forget about us.” Luna frowned.
Hermione looked away.
Luna felt awful. “I'm sorry I didn't mean to bring you down this morning, I just saw the old you last night. The one that would let loose and go with the flow.”
Hermione half-laughed. “I was never like that!”
Luna smiled. “Okay, maybe that was you that I have in my head, but the point is we never see you anymore. Last night was the first time we went out together in over three months.
“I know, but this project at work is taking over my life. It is very important to me and to a lot of people.”
“I know, but you have to remember that you do have a life outside of the office also,” Luna said as she finished getting dressed.
“I know, once this project is done, I'm changing my professional life,” Hermione said out of the blue.
“What do you mean?” Luna said shocked.
Hermione sighed, got out of bed and shook her head. “Forget it, I'm just stressed out.”
Luna dropped the subject for now; she knew when not to push. But she was not going to forget about it. Hermione seemed to be questioning her job, or at least the demands of the job.
Hermione went into the kitchen and put a kettle of water on the stove to boil for tea, Luna followed. A moment later, an owl swooped in through the open kitchen window. It deposited a letter in Hermione's hand and perched itself on the counter waiting for a response to take back. Hermione groaned at the sight of the Ministry of Magic seal on the back of the envelope.
“What do they want? It's my day off,” Hermione moaned as she dropped down on a kitchen chair and tore open the letter. “Damn, they want me to come in this afternoon, apparently there has been an incident and the want me there,” Hermione said in disbelief.
“What possible reason could they need you there for an incident?” Luna asked, furrowing her eyebrows taking the letter from Hermione.
“Apparently my researcher was arrested, and it could now comprise the entire project,” Hermione’s head fell into her hands. Her researcher had been nothing but trouble for her.
“Tell them you can't. Hermione, you've been working almost non-stop for six months. You need a break before you burn out,” Luna said angrily.
“I can't it's mandatory that I am there. If I don't go, the whole project could be shut down, and all my work and sacrifice will be for nothing,” Hermione said in defeat.
Luna shook her head; this project was going to kill Hermione if she wasn't careful. “Okay, then I guess I will meet up with you later,” Luna said. Hermione could hear the disappointment.
“Luna, don't be mad at me. I can't help it that my researcher got arrested.”
“I know, but it seems the minute you take time for yourself, something always comes up and you are back at work. I don't want to see you constantly working. You are going to work yourself to death.”
Hermione averted her eyes; she didn't want to look at Luna. Hermione knew that she was right. “I need to get ready. I'll send you an owl when I am back, maybe we can meet up then?”
“Okay,” Luna said. She kissed Hermione goodbye and Apparated out.
Hermione sighed and got ready for work. She was not looking forward to this meeting. What kind of trouble did her researcher get into? She was dreading what she was walking into.
~*~*~
Luna arrived back at her flat, exhausted but overall happy. She was disappointed that Hermione had to go into work today. They had planned to spend the day together, shopping for their date next Friday. She hoped that Hermione would not be long, but she knew that once Hermione entered the Ministry of Magic she would be there for most of the day.
Luna sighed, she wished that Hermione would, for once, put work aside for a day and just remember that she is also a person not just a employee of the Ministry, but ever since the war it seemed that Hermione had something to prove to them.
As far as Luna was concerned Hermione proved herself enough, if it wasn't for this project she was working on, which Luna knew was very important, she would convince Hermione to quit her job. It wasn't worth the stress.
Luna sighed, she looked around her home, she planned to be out most of the day today, so she had no idea what she was going to do. She decided to write her dad and see if he wanted to write an article about the Masquerade Ball for the Quibbler. She could give him a first hand account on what happen and whom she speculated was there. Over the last few years, the Quibbler sales rose after the articles were published.
After she wrote the letter she decided to go outside and do some gardening, she hoped that would distract her from worrying about Hermione. Maybe she would owl Hermione and see if she would like to have lunch together. She hoped she would at least take the time to have lunch. Luna knew when Hermione was focused on a project she would forget to eat.
Luna sent the owl and prayed that she would get a response soon.
~*~*~
Hermione was not having a good day. When she got to the Ministry, she was reprimanded almost immediately for hiring a researcher who doesn't know how to keep his nose clean. Hermione politely reminded her boss, Mr. Gafter, that she didn't get a choice on who was picked as her researcher, the committee chose for her. Hermione was not pleased with their decision. They had chosen a former Slytherin, Malcolm Baddock, who did not like working under Hermione. He was few years younger then Hermione and all attitude. Not only did he not like working under a Muggleborn but also the fact that Hermione was a women added insult to injury.
Hermione did most of the research herself, which is why this project consumed her life. Of course, when she complained to the committee head about her non-productive assistant, Mr. Durdrum told her to deal with it. Maybe with this incident she can finally get a new researcher who will actually care about the project.
This project was very important to her. She was researching the properties surrounding the chemical makeup of a werewolf and an Animagus. She believed that if she could isolate the werewolf gene and figure out the how it affects the body internally; she might be able to reverse the side affect and essentially turn werewolves into shape shifters. In theory it would work, she just needed to find the connection between the two.
“Miss Granger, are you aware of what your researcher was doing last night?” the head of the Potions committee, Mr. Durdrum asked. Mr. Gafter stood by with his arms crossed over his chest.
Hermione hated Mr. Durdrum; he was more concerned with quantity then quality. He was always rushing Hermione, to finish her project. He didn't care what she was working on took time, and to rush her would mean a sloppy job. “Why would I know what my researcher was doing on his off time?” Hermione answered back.
“You are the head of this project...”
“So I should what, have him followed to research his night activities? Are all the employee's followed?” Hermione bit back. Why was this guy trying to put the blame on her?
Just then the doors to Mr. Durdrum's office burst open and the Minister of Magic himself, Kingsley Shacklebolt walked in. He turned to Malcolm Baddock and said, “What you did last night was a disgrace and a danger to the Ministry. You were caught drunk, in Muggle London, screaming at the top of your lungs about our world. What were you thinking?”
Malcolm, who was sitting in the corner, was very quiet throughout all of this. He was hoping that his uncle, Michael Durdrum, would somehow put the blame on Hermione then he would be able to take over the project and get all the credit. Knowing Hermione she had already done all the research herself and was about to have a breakthrough. But now that the Minister himself was informed, he had no idea how he was getting out of this. He looked to his uncle; he was not looking back at him. He closed his eyes in defeat. There was no way he was going to get out of this. “I don't know, sir.”
“Inexcusable!”
Shacklebolt turned to Hermione and smiled slightly. “Why are you here, Miss Granger? I thought it was your day off?” he asked in a more calmer voice.
“So did I. Apparently I am being blamed for whatever this idiot did,” Hermione said, gesturing to Malcolm. She was not going to stand by quietly.
“Interesting,” Kingsley turned to Malcolm. “You’re fired.”
Malcolm opened his mouth to protest but Kingsley stopped him. “You are also on probation and will never work for the Ministry ever again. However, you will not be arrested. Despite your outburst, the Muggles who witnessed you have passed you off as a drunken idiot, having too much Halloween fun. They did not take anything you said as truth.”
Hermione was surprised by this. She had a thought and quickly acted on it before Malcolm was dismissed from the building. “I would like him to take an oath not to divulge any information about my project to anyone. I wish I he could be obliviated so he wouldn't remember the research. Not that he did much work on it.”
“Agreed. Malcolm you will take an oath right now that you will not discuss the project you were suppose to me working on with Hermione to anyone. You will also take an oath, not to continue the research on your own.”
Hermione tried her luck again, since it seemed to be working in her favour. “I also want to request a new researcher, one who will actually work, and I want to final say on whom he or she is.”
“I'll get right on that. Why don't you go home and enjoy your day off. You had an exciting night last night,” he whispered the last part.
Hermione groaned inwardly, so Kingsley was there last night and he recognized her. Perfect.
Hermione left Mr. Durdrum's office, after the oath was taken. She quickly went to her office to grab a few notes to take home with her. There was an owl waiting for her from Luna. She smiled when she read the note; she couldn’t wait to tell Luna about this little development.
~*~*~
Luna and Hermione met at the Leaky Cauldron for lunch.
“I can't believe what he did. I am so glad that the Minister walked in and fired him,” Luna said.
“Me too. I can't believe that Mr. Durdrum was trying to put the blame on me,” Hermione said in disbelief. “Who does he think he is?”
“I glad, now maybe you will get a researcher who will actually do his job,” Luna smiled. This was an interesting development. She hoped that this would mean an easier and less stressed work environment for Hermione.
“That would be nice, and then maybe I could get this project done faster and back to a more normal life. Maybe even go on more dates.” Hermione smiled as she daydreamed of a less stressful life.
“Speaking of dates, what should we wear to ours on Friday?” Luna smiled.
“Haven't thought about it yet. We don't even know where we are going. It still seems strange to me.”
“You're thinking too hard. Why don't we go shopping after lunch? We can find something that will knock our mystery date off his broom!”
Hermione smiled. “Why not. I'm having a good day, why not keep it going.”
“That's my girl, now what should we have for lunch?” Luna asked, looking at the menu.
Hermione smiled, it had been a long time since she shared a causal lunch with Luna. Usually they met and Hermione had to rush to get back to her office. She almost forgot what a day off was suppose to be like. And to think, when she received that owl this morning, she thought her day would be ruined.
After lunch, Hermione and Luna roamed Diagon Alley. “Should we wear robes, dresses, or both?” Luna asked.
“Do we need to hide our identities on this date?” Hermione asked at the same time.
Luna chuckled, “I don't think so? The anonymity was just for the ball. I, for one, can't wait to see who we bid on!” Luna said excitedly.
“I think we should wear dresses,” Hermione said as she stopped in front of Witch’s Wardrobe dress shop. Hermione was starting at a strapless moss coloured dress.
“I think you would look beautiful in that,” Luna said dreamily. “Lets try it on,” she said and took Hermione's hand and pulled her into the shop.
“Can I help you?” the sales witch asked.
“She wants to try on the green number in the window,” Luna said with a bit of urgency in her voice.
“You do know I can speak. Right?” Hermione said to Luna with a laugh.
The sales lady smiled, “The strapless one?”
“Yes,” both Luna and Hermione said.
She walked to the window and pulled the dress off the mannequin. “I just got this dress in. It's a one of a kind, like most of the clothes in this store,” the sales women said with a sweet smile.
Hermione knew that was sales code for expensive.
“It's beautiful,” Hermione said, feeling the fabric with her fingers. It felt like silk.
“It's one hundred percent silk and handmade in Spain,” the sales women said.
“Try it on already, Hermione,” Luna said.
“The dressing rooms are this way,” the sales lady said as she pulled a curtain aside, to reveal a dressing room. “If you need any help let me know.”
“She needs a dress too,” Hermione whispered, nodding at Luna. “Maybe something in blue?” Hermione smiled at the sales lady.
“I'll see what I can find for her. My name is Tabitha let me know if you need help with the dress,” she said as she walked off to find a dress for Luna.
Hermione quickly changed, the minute she slipped on the dress she was in heaven. The dress was form fitted and hugged her curves in all the right places. Luna walked in as she was doing a little twirl at the mirror.
“Wow, you look scrumptious,” Luna said. “I could eat you up.”
“Mm maybe later,” Hermione said.
“You look very beautiful, I think you should buy it for Friday,” Luna said.
“How are you doing in here,” Tabitha said through the curtain.
“Very well, thank you,” Hermione said.
“I think I might have found a dress for your friend,” Tabitha said.
“Really?” Luna said as she opened curtain. “Let me see.”
Tabitha held up a silvery blue backless dress that had a slit up the side of the leg.
“Oh that's so pretty!” Luna said, taking the dress. “I can't wait to see how I look in it!”
Tabitha turned to Hermione. “You look beautiful in that dress. Did you want to purchase it?'
“Do it!” Luna yelled, already starting to get undressed.
Hermione laughed. “How can I resist! I love it.”
“Good!” Tabitha said as she closed the curtain.
Luna was already half dressed when Tabitha left. She slipped on the dress and squealed with delight. “This feels so good against my skin. I feel very sexy in this dress.”
Hermione laughed. “Since when do you squeal?”
“I don't squeal!” Luna said in a mock horror voice.
“You just did.” Hermione laughed as she finished getting dressed.
“Oh, then I couldn't help myself,” Luna said, still smiling
“You look amazing. Tabitha can really pick a dress; it looks like it was made for you.”
“Oh I am so getting this dress!” Luna said excitedly.
“I have matching shoes if you would like to see them,” Tabitha yelled from the other side of the curtain.
“Oh I like her!” Luna said as she pulled back the curtain.
Tabitha handed Luna and Hermione shoes that matched their dresses. By the time Hermione and Luna left the store, they had their dresses, shoes, matching handbags, and accessories.
“That was so much fun! We should do that more often!” Hermione said, holding up her bags. “I think Tabitha was doing a little dance when we left. I never spent so much at one store before.”
“It was worth it!” Luna said, holding up her packages.
“Yes it was!” Hermione giggled as the left Diagon Alley with their purchases.
